A good reference book for young readers
A book about weather everything from the history of meteorology to the formation of hurricanes. There is a lot of information in each page, information about different equipment used to track and measure theweather. Photographs and graphics are used to describe the weather and howto track it. In the back of the book there are pages devoted to making ahome weather station to track and record the weather.The book isindexed in the back for easy access to information. It makes the book agood choice to have for easy reference or a young student's weatherproject. The material is not presented in a boring matter. Nice Book but not for Just Starting Readers - a review of DK's "Tale of a Tadpole"
This is another of the Eyewitness Readers series.Labeled as Level 1 --Beginning to Read-- I think that it would be a little too much for a real beginning reader.[I think of a real beginner as one who might start with the first Bob Books.]
Eyecatching and manageable for beginning readers
I wanted this to be a book my child could read to me easily, as we are moving on from phonics readers and the like. The pictures are great, as is the case with most DK books. The only word beyond my five year old was 'tongue' which was one of the picture words (i.e. one of about eight words that are clearly defined by a picture within the book). There were no 'gh' words or other tricky ones to trip a beginning reader up.

Learn to read, then read to learn!
While living in Africa we would often rescue frogs from our pool. Sometimes eggs had already been laid and the eggs were wrapped in a clear jelly. In the stream near our home we would collect tadpoles and take them home to show mom. Sometimes we found what we thought were miniature frogs. They were just baby frogs and we were sent back to the stream to release them so they could grow up and be productive insect hunters.Read more

Ooo, Heart-Shaped Money
"The earliest reports of payments with cowrie shells were from China about 3,500 years ago."
Great place to start
I have an older version of this book. The latest has added a section on shared currency.The cover on the older version has more exotic coins such as heart cutouts. However any version of this book shows a lot of colorful pictures of script and coin. There are simple descriptions of the making of and measuring of money. If you are a coin collector the descriptions help enhance the collection by telling what the symbols represent on the coin as well as some tog the history. My only disappointment was the lack of information on porcelain notgeld. This makes you wonder what else may be missing. Well you can not stuff everything in to 64 pages with pictures.

missing one important point!
This book is generally good. However, it missed one very important part. It failed to introduce the different players in the game. For a person who knows nothing about this sport, s/he would be very confused when the author starts to talk about line back, quarter back, etc. Great Christmass gift for the young football fans
My son (4.5) recenly got excited about football.This book is excellent for providing him with all the basic facts about the game--from its historic origins and development over time, to the role of the uniforms, helmets, coaches' responsibilities, etc. Must admit that it helped me as well to become at least a little literate in my son's latest obsession. At their best the DK Eyewitness Books are like visits to a museum (usually a lot more than one).Well, that is what their look at "Football" is like.On the first two-page spread, devoted to How Football Began, there is a photograph of a nose protector, one of the rare examples of safety equipment from the early years of the game.Near it is the season budget that shows the payment made by the Allegheny Athletic Association to Yale star William (Pudge) Heffelfinger, that made him the first recognized pro player (and this is just the first page of the book).Readers will be informed by the historical study of The Football Helmet, which goes all the way back to the helmets worn by the Roman legions."Football" tries to cover a lot of ground and as with the companion volume on "The Super Bowl," the more of a football fanatic you are, the more you will probably enojoy reading this book.These are nice supplemental volumes to a football fan's library. ... Grow!Learn! Read!
We were very interested in how this complicated and ancient religion would be portrayed from a Western, visiting eye.We were pleased at DK's clear delineation between the major sects were given as much devotion to detail as the sects in DK's Christian book (as well as fair portrayal in the DK Religions book!).The differences included practices by the people versus the monks, by evolution through countries, and recent adaptation to America.I don't know that the Editorial Reviewer got it right when they said the belief in afterlife was obscured.It's a Western measurement that negates what the DK Religions book and Buddhism book gives a vantage to.Very interesting stuff for those ready to move past the 9/11 God-centered/Christian-Islamic dialogue toward a more inclusive world view!Read on about Eastern religions that preceded these dialogues by a few hundred years!Very insightful! ... Well Written
I purchased this for my son who is 9. He enjoyed it to my surprise and pleasure!It is well illustrated and made him think outside the box ( not that hard for a nine yr.old). The questions this book generates in the young reader makes it a valuable book in theireducation.

Looking for the legendary lost city of Atlantis
I was always more interested in the "real" Atlantis that the ones that popped up in fiction ever since I read a "Reader's Digest" article that explained how archeologists were looking at the volcanic island of Thera in the Aegean sea as the legendary island.The most interesting part of the article talked about how the volcanic explosions that destroyed Thera may well have been the cause of the plagues of Egypt, all of which are apparently associated with volcanic eruptions.Since I am planning a trip to Greece early next year that could involve a few days on the black sand beaches of Thera, I have been doing a bit of research on both the place and the legends of Atlantis. A bought this book for my 8 year-old and ended up reading it myself.I've done a fair amount of my own reading on Atlantis and to my surprise I found this to be a really well written overview of many famous Atlantis ideas.The book begins with a nice retelling of Plato's original story.There are some really stunning illustrations in the book - from the original artwork showing the capital city of Atlantis as it might have been, to many photographs of undersea ruins etc.The author has done a great job, and produced a book that I and my son enjoyed in equal measure! ... Born to be Beautiful
I have always thought that the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is just amazing. In this story, a butterfly flits from flower to flower and looks for a leaf where she can lay her eggs. Excellent Tour for the Uninitiated
This was a great followup to the DK Religions book, providing the usual customs and major Biblical sitings outlined in other references.What was pivotal to a nonWestern religious family was the way DK separated the factions, evolution, and frank comparisons (e.g., "Orthodox are the closest to the practices that Jesus followed in his day") that are not evident to even practitioners.This is an important look into Chritianity for both Christians and nonChristians, and hopefully, the beginning of exploration into learning about other World Religions.Read on!We recommend the DK Buddhism edition as well.

Excellent book!
It's like a museum in a book!All of the Eyewitness books are that way.I'd recommend any of them.Texas is a great addition to that collection.Works great for homeschooling too.

Texas en Espanol is fantastico
A great book for advanced second graders and above. The facts are succint and interesting, which makes it perfect for the teacher to read before talking about the Lone Star State. The illustrations and the facts are both well done. Numerous discussions can be started from this well written book. Facts are on almost any aspect of the state including, the cities, geography, animals, plants, populations, type of government, the Alamo, etc.
