4-0 out of 5 stars Collector's Edition lacks extras
This is a gorgeous, imaginative picture book, beautifully produced and packaged by Candlewick Press and Laika, thatincludes a dvd of the award-winning short feature of the same name. Sadly there are no extras on the dvd nor any making-of information of any kind. While the book and short certainly stand on their own merits and compliment each other marvelously, I was hoping there would be more to this "Collector's Edition Gift Set". ... Read more

Editorial Review

An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine work of literature that can stand alongside any in English
I just reread it recently as an adult. I had this boxed set of three hardcover E.B. White books when I was a kid - Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan (which I remember as my favorite of the three, though I hardly remember it today), and Stuart Little.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charlotte's Web
I've purchased this book for my daughter who is almost 9 years old, I end up reading it before her. This book is great for growing up kids; how wonderful and variable it is to have a friend he/she can depend on and be with to share fun, sad and so so stories to one another.
4-0 out of 5 stars A classic, and for a good reason
This book, though it may seem to be just a cute story about a pig, is actually quite sad.The first time I read this book I was in first grade and I liked it, but it was only when I just recently read it again that I realized how good it really is. This book, through its simple plot, reminded me a lot about how selfless some people are and also about growing up.No wonder it's a classic; even though it's written for little kids, it can remind a lot of people about their own lives and bring back a lot of fond memories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This book carries exciting adventures of the Greek Myths. It does not lack entertainment and it doesn't have blunt information like most books do...most of those will put you to sleep. This one, however, will leave you wanting more; you're not going to want to put it down, if need be.
4-0 out of 5 stars The book
I didn't think that the book was all that great... the author alludes to other Gods, but then doesn't include them in the book. He does this with other types of stories too. For the purpose of the book, as an informational book, it hits the topics dead on. It's not that bad, but I don't think that it deserves 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a lifelong passion
I first met this book through a series of LP records in my local library as a child; I later read the book. It's still my favorite telling of the Greek myths, and it spawned a facination for the folklore and mythology that has been a great source of pleasure for my entire life (I'm now in my late thirties).I can't recommend this book enough, regardless of the reader's age; Evslin's telling of them gives life and personality to the characters that can't be found in any other version of the myths. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars complicated read
i purchased go dog go for my son and he loved the spanish version. so i decided to go with green eggs(since i have read it over 50 times)and it was not as easy to follow and the words were a little difficult to relate. i can speak a little spanish and read a little but this book left me struggling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime reading for kids ! ! !
I bought it for my three year old son, and I can't express how much joy my little one has every night when he goes to bed, he immediately runs to bed and literally ask my wife or me to start reading. I highly recommend it for all the little ones!! ! !, you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It rhymes! Great vocabulary stretcher!
Many translated classics don't have the original flow of the English title. This one does! I read it to my Spanish classes about once a month and have begun leaving out words - because of the repetition, they are all (ages 3 to 18) grabbing more vocabulary, and laugh as they listen.

3-0 out of 5 stars not as good as SeaStar Books' version by Jerry Pinkney
I borrowed SeaStar Books' version from library. Love it so much that I decided to buy one for my daughter. I ended up boought this one. But comparing the two books, I love SeaStar's version much better: the story is told in much more interesting way. My 3 and half year old daughter loves it when I read it to her. The language in this book is too bland.

4-0 out of 5 stars What an excellent way to introduce children to literature.
Aesop's Fables are a good way to introduce children to fine literature. This is especially easier in lovely illustrated editions. These fables of ancient Greece have been known to civiliation for centuries, and they are as apt now as when they were penned in the sixth century A.D.These fables were devised by Aesop to get out of any difficulty that he may have encountered with his master. He was a slave after all.The stories were mainly about the birds and beasts of field and forest, but everyone except Aesop's rather stupid master understood the meaning behind them.A fairly quick and easy read, but one well worth attempting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great distraction
We got this for our 2 and 1/2 year old for our trip to Disney World.Any time we had a long wait (the parade especially) we whipped it out for her to amuse herself. Not only did she love it, but every little girl who could see it quickly gathered to stare longingly at it.Now that we are home, she plays with it every day.My only problem with is that since there are so many SMALL accessories (shoes, necklaces etc...) they are very easy to lose.So you have to keep an eye for glass slippers when you vacuum.Otherwise, I would say this is our best "Princess" purchase yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for independent play
My daughter really likes this and so do I because she can play by herself. The only thing I don't like is that the vinyl stickers don't seem to 'stick' very well and it frustrates my 3 year old.Otherwise, a great buy!

Timely delivery. The book was great. My great grandson loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Child's Favorite
My 21 month old son loves the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, at first we used to make up the story from what we remembered about it, but now with this book he can follow along and point at the troll hiding under the bridge. It gets may requests. The pictures are great and the story flows quickly enough to keep his interest.I like the ending.Snip Snap Snout, this reviews wrote out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Which 3BBG version?This one--without question, hands down
Here's the one, parents and grandparents.Stephen Carpenter's son Tad had loved this story so much that Carpenter decided to write his own version--and am I glad he did! This is one of my four-year-old's daily requests, and my 13-year-old will still scoop it up for a chuckle from time to time. What makes this particular edition so great?

Exotic, beautiful, and instructive, this "mathematical folktale" by author-illustrator Demi emerged from her love of India. The narrative and the evocative illustrations combine to create a real sense of the culture and atmosphere of this romantic land. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot to learn, including girl-power
This is Demi's re-telling of an old folktale of a king who orders that all rice in his kingdom must be stored in the royal granaries so that there would be food in times of famine; but when his people start to go hungry, he refuses to open the granaries, claiming that the situation was not bad enough to warrant doing so - until a small child outsmarts him by asking for a grain of rice doubled every day for a month.
5-0 out of 5 stars a tale to delight both young and old
My daughter is three and loves this book -- not just for the gorgeous fold-out illustrated spread of the caravan of elephants carrying the rice on the 30th day -- but because she can follow along with the story. The tale is of a rich greedy rajah who doesn't want to share, but is then outwitted by a young girl and forced to give up all the grain in his storehouses. At the end, he is humbled and vows to be a more fair and wise ruler. My daughter loves to sit with one grain of rice in her hand like Rani on the title page of the book.I can see her forming rudimentary mathematical concepts, but I won't push it.There's plenty of time to return to this book when we introduce the times tables.
5-0 out of 5 stars One grain of rice = many valuable lessons for students
One Grain of RIce is not only a bookof math, it is also a folktale. It shows how rice can grow from one grain, to two grains,to four grains, to 8 grains to 16 grains and all the way up to a whole barn full of grain.

Editorial Review

A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox.If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave. As the mitten sails through the air, Nicki spots it, reclaims it, and takes it home to show his smiling Baba.Read more

She envisioned a seven-part series, each part of which was knocking on 800 pages. That was a serious bit of world building right there. Then, she wrote the first book, a whopping multi-page monster I haven't read yet. So let's just admire her for making an effort of that magnitude.

3-0 out of 5 stars Arthur's Halloween
Arthur's Halloween is about Arthur who is afraid of pretty much everything. When Halloween comes, he is told he has to take his sister. When trick or treating the two get lost behind and D.W. goes in the so-called Witch House, and Arthur has to go get her. The book teaches that you shouldn't judge somebody by what other people tell you. This book is good for kids 4-8. I thought it was an ok book.

This story is delightful. We bought it because we were taking our 2.5 yr old along on a ski trip and wanted him to have a silly little story that related to the mountain and skiing (even though he's not on skis yet).Well, it is just that... and more. He's learned a lot, developed an interest in skiing (maybe next year) and always gets a good laugh out of this book! It's also fun that George seems to invent snowboarding - my husband and I got a big kick out of that and have shared the story with many adult friends (isn't everyone a Curious Geroge fan?)!

I purchased this book for my five year old son, who loves anything that has to do do with outerspace and the planets. This is a terrific book for a young child, the information is direct and to the point and easy to understand.I think children in the older recommended age range would be somewhat dissappointed, it is not really meant for in depth understanding.5-0 out of 5 stars Out Of This Place

5-0 out of 5 stars So apropos for today
This is a story of war and how it affects the innocents who are caught in it.The story is sad, but not so sad children shouldn't be reading it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes
This book, though very short, is powerful, and once read, it will never be forgotten by the reader.

1-0 out of 5 stars No No No
I am a huge fan of this series, and this really was disappointing. The writing bit was decent, but the illustrations didn't meet my standards whatsoever. i was thoroughly disappointed with a few of the drawings as they didn't even follow the author's descriptions. It was irritating reading a book in a series I enjoy immensly that was so dismal.

2-0 out of 5 stars A cool idea, but it could have been much better.
I picked this up in a bookstore the other day.I had almost purchased it once, but I am now very glad that I didn't.I looked at the pics. and they were pretty good. (although I do really prefer to view characters and scenes in my own head) I preceded to read the text, which I finished reading in about ten minutes!I'd say that this book was a really cool idea, but for a price around $7, I don't think that this is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome artwork
this book brings to life everything i imagined when reading the first several books. i know many people complained about this book not covering all of the territories. i am kind of glad it hasn't covered the books that have not yet been written. i would prefer to use my own imagination first. i believe there will be a follow-up to this book when the rest of the series is written. ... Editorial Review

No education is complete without a large slice of Greek mythology. And there's no better way of meeting that literary quota than with the D'Aulaires' book. All the great gods and goddesses of ancient Greece are depicted in this big, beautiful classic, lovingly illustrated and skillfully told. Young readers will be dazzled by mighty Zeus, lord of the universe; stirred by elegant Athena, goddess of wisdom; intimidated by powerful Hera, queen of Olympus; and chilled by moody Poseidon, ruler of the sea. These often impetuous immortals flounce and frolic, get indiscreet, and get even. From petty squabbles to heroic deeds, their actions cover the range of godly--and mortal--personalities.Read more

Editorial Review

Many of Eric Carle's books begin with a small creature being born just as a great yellow sun rises. This time the hero is a firefly, and the inimitably Carle-ish cut-paper orange-and-yellow sun is setting. The firefly buzzes off in search of companionship, but keeps following other lights by mistake--a candle, a flashlight, a lantern--and these in turn are all leading in the direction of a fireworks display. Finally, the lonely firefly finds the friends it is seeking--a dozen or more other fireflies. This is one of a series of large (11.5 by 8.5 inches) format Carle books with a mechanical twist: in this case, the firefly's new group of friends start to flash (from tiny yellow bulbs embedded in the book) as you turn the last page. (The battery is replaceable.) (Baby to preschool) Read more

I have no "black button" on the inside cover to shut off the lights. They don't turn off. When the book is closed tight, you can see them flashing inside.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Children's Classic
This is a wonderful book - one of many written and illustrated by Eric Carle. My daughter has enjoyed this since she was about six months old.Now one and a half, she asks for it by name! She read the first copy so much that we had to replace it (despite it's sturdy quality).
