3-0 out of 5 stars Umm..........
What a life that Lemony Snicket has. I loved the format of this book. It was like a newspaper artical at first.I didn't think it was that interesting. I mean peoples lives are interesting its just i couldn't get into it. I love all of this other books just not this one. This book tell about the life of Lemony Snicket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every sentence hides a secret!
Seriously, after about five pages into this book, you'll feel like you're reading a coded message from one spy to another. Like a previous reviewer said, it's best to read this after reading a lot of the other books (I would try up to Hostile Hospital) so you can understand it.I began to read this after Austere Academy and I regretted buying it.Then, after reading the other books, I gave this a shot, and it was so much more easy to read!!So much is revealed, but also so many more questions are raised.I have the paperback edition, but I think I'll get the hardcover, cause that reversable cover sound GREAT!!!! If you are a fan of A Series of Unfortunate Events, pick this up!

5-0 out of 5 stars You really don't want to read this....
i know some people have said that you shouldnt read this until further on it the series but keep in mind that this book was published before a lot of the series. so read it WHILE you're reading the series and you'll catch on to all the little clues and hints. i can't wait until the book with the letters from beatrice comes out, she is more important than just the dedication lines. Keep in mind, Lemony has a lot up his sleeves for the last book...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must-use for any middle school classroom!
This true story written from the perspective of an 11-year-old immigrant, truly sums up the immigrant perspective. My 4th grade students, journaled each day as if he or she were the central character, and begged for each of the five chapters. This book alone, replaced a 4-week unit that I had used previously to emphasize the impact of immigration on our state.Written by the author's daughter, with photos showing then and now, it is wonderful.FYI: We used, as the final journal entry, an account written by Yehuda when he finds his journal 70 years later and recounts the years since arriving in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Character traits nicely parallel our school's program.
The story reads well for any student needing to understand the trials and tribulations of people immigrating to the U.S.Important character traits are developed and their importance in reaching a goal are emphasized. Theartwork makes a dramatic statement to anyone who opens the book. Elementarystudents should be attracted by this outstanding feature. As a schooldirector and recently retired teacher, I purchased a copy for each of ourelementary libraries because of the qualiy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all ages!
This review is from Debbie,Paul,Ryan and Melissa. We all modelled for the illustrator,Laurie McGaw, of this book. It was a wonderful experience since some of our grandparents left Russia and Poland because of the war and wefelt we could relate to the people in the book. The book has been presentedto the our childrens' school in conjunction with the Holocaust unit.Teachers and kids alike found the book to be very interesting andbeautifully illustrated. We recommend it to all nationalities and ages.Itis not only a book about Jewish people, but also a book about what anyimmigrants coming to North America might have experienced. ... Read more

I thought the book made me have a positive outlook on life and brightened my spirit. After reading it, I kept thinking about the character and his story. It was very easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gripping tale you just won't put this book down
Iqbal is a book about bonded labour. It is about Pakistani children Iqbal, Fatima and fourteen other children. They have been sent out to work to pay off the debt, which their family owe to the unkind and evil Hassan Khan.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book should not be recommended by school teachers to be read by young students..
"The Koreans have established a group they call the anti-Japanes Communist party. Koreans were part of the Japanese Empire but hated the Japanese and hated the war." quote from page. 89
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for highschool readers
So Far From the Bamboo Grove tells the story of a young Japanese girl that survives the horror of WWII. Although very well written, a lot of the material is not suitable for children under the age of 14.Graphic murder and deaths, along with brief descriptions of rape are layered throughout more than half of the book.Excellent story - just not kid friendly.Don't let the recommended age bracket fool you.Read the book before your child does and be prepared for lots of questions, tears and maybe a few nightmares. This book would have been much better suited for highschool and above.

3-0 out of 5 stars What?
I thought that this was a good book. However, the ending left me hanging in the breeze. The begining and middle, were great, but the ending stopped just suddenly, with no follow up.I would have included what happend to her father. All in all, good book, bad ending. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners.
"Hatshepsut, His Majesty, Herself" is a very good book for children or people who just want a straight forward history of the first succesful female pharoah in ancient Egypt. This was the first book I read of Hatshepsut and I enjoyed it alot. It encouraged me to begin to learn more about her. She was truly a great ruler and worth investigating further. The book consists of a basic history of Hatshepsut and her accomplishments. If you liked this book check out a longer young adult novel "His Majesty, Queen Hatshepsut" by 'Dorothy Sharp Carter'. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A nice piece to add to my collection
i collece the royal diaries series, so this book fit nicely on the shelf. arrival time was prompt, and the condition of the book was fantastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A flower's story.

5-0 out of 5 stars The golden flower deserves five golden, shiny stars
I absoloutely loved the vivid diary of Anacaona, leader of Haiti. She is the golden flower throughout the story and i know that Edwidge Danticat is definitaly the 2nd best ROYAL DIARY WRITER,(first being Kathryn Lasky)This diary tells the true story of the beautiful Anacaona, golden flower of Haiti. This book is based throughout a series of symbols Anacaona used to write her days, just like how the other young women of the other royal diay series wrote down their days into perfect little pages(except for Victoria who stole hers)I thought this book was great and intersting even though theepilogue was sadder than the one of Kaiulani and Anastasia.I also love the radiant beauty that shined through the face of Princes Anacaona of Haiti in the front cover. The words were well chosen and said throughout and i especially like the way the white people said as bad and black good(this happened in the royal diary of Nzingha)I didn't find one bit of the story dull and absorbed the beauty of this beautiful woman in an exotic country,Haiti and independant that will always be rememberd.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully illustrated introduction to the life and art of Diego Rivera
"Diego" introduces the life and art of Diego Rivera, the great muralist from Mexico, to young readers. As the note in the back of the book explains, people all over the world have heard of Rivera because he helped changed the meaning of art.In a world where artists made paintings to hang in museums and galleries, Rivera painted murals in public spaces so that ordinary people could see them as every day.Rivera painted murals all over Mexico, not only palaces and government buildings but also in schools, to show his deep respect for both the common people of Mexico and the working class around the world. All told, Rivera painted about two and a half miles of murals in his lifetime.
5-0 out of 5 stars Viva Diego!
Diego Rivera's biography is told in this superbly illustrated text. The story begins as he is born, and ends many years later after Rivera has become a famous Mexican muralist, however much of the text focuses on Rivera's childhood. The text is written in both English and Spanish on every page. Both languages are written in concise sentences that clearly convey information about Rivera's life and work. Each page also has a brightly colored picture that reinforces the text's message. The illustrations by Jeanette Winter are beautiful, richly colored accompaniments to the colorful life of Diego Rivera. The motifs in them are those typically found in Mexican folk art and include appropriate colors and subjects, often echoing those found in Rivera's work. This is a delightful and age appropriate introduction to an artist whose tempestuous personal life sometimes overshadows his outstanding artistic accomplishments both inside and outside of Mexico. Students who are interested in art or Mexican history will find this book to be a treasure. Native Spanish speakers could use this text in the classroom to share their knowledge of the Spanish language and Mexican culture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Writing a book about Diego Rivera in terms that young children can understand is not an easy task, however this book does a great job. The story is engaging, the pictures are wonderfully colorful, and can hold a kid's attention. I purchased this book when my daughter was only 3 and even though she didn't understand much of the text, she was captivated by the pictures. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to expose a young child to art and artists' lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La pura verdad-the whole truth
This is a great family book.I am American Caucasian and my husband is a Mexican imigrant. We read this story out loud to one another, and while it is writen (very well) in simple English so that any reader could probably read it,we enjoyed it imensly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was very interesting. I loved the way this book shows how Mexicans suffer, struggle and work hard to get what they need to survive. This book has a good way of showing the different types of experiences the family goes through. It gets to a point where you get so into the book that you get frightened of what could happen to the family next. You don't know if the family is going to get caught by the border patrol or if you're going to be able to find a job for the next season. You just don't know if your going to be able to survive the only thing you have in your hands is hope and faith.
5-0 out of 5 stars Want to know what it's like?
This book is a great place to start if you are interested in learning about the life of someone less priviledged than yourself. Perhaps it will help you appreciate the simple pleasures in life and everything that you've got. When you reach the end of the book, you'll be glad Jimenez wrote a sequel (Breaking Through).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book in the most simple words
This is by far one of the best books that I have read about the Armenian Genocide, in the most simple words possible. The book captures the reader's attention by its moving and true story of a young woman who came from a distinguished Armenian family in Turkey and became a victim of the first genocide of the century. It shows the courage of this young woman and the will power of most Armenians in staying alive and surviving the most brutal acts of the Turks against the Armenians. It is a story that every child & adult, Armenian or none, should read. It gives the reader a true perspective of how the Turks committed the act of slaughtering and killing the Armenians and the Greek, while also sharing some of the Armenian history and its cultural practices. I suspect that Veron Kherdian is still alive, but if she is, I'd love to visit her and thank her for her courage, her lessons that she taught me in her book, and most of all the message that she gave in her book: "Never give up hope in a better and sunny day, yet to come" and for me as an Armenian her most important message was to never give up my race and my history as an Armenian and to teach our future generations the truth about our history and our ancestors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad Story with a glimmer of hope
This story brought tears to my eyes as I read each page discovering the trek and life of Veron.A brave young girl who had lost everything. Veron was challenged and adapted with all that crossed her path and yet still survived to tell the story about the Armenian genocide to her children and her grandchildren.Losing your immediate family is a stab to the heart, but the spirit of Veron and her faith in her religion is what kept her going. I loved her character and her determination. Veron holds a string to my heart. This is a story that should be read by the young Armenian generation to give them only a glimpse of what happened during those death marches into the desert and the uncertain future encountered by many.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good autobiographical book for teaching children about Turkey's genocide of Armenian Christians
The story starts off with Veron's idyllic childhood in the Armenian sector of a Turkish city.Like the Jews in Europe and the Japanese on the West Coast of the US they begin to feel the escalating persecution in the streets. Then it escalates to deportation and a death march. Veron loses her entire family. The story chronicles Veron's survival, being treated as a charity case by less than welcoming distant relatives, forming bonds with close friends of her family, and living in a boarding school with other survivors. She eventually comes to the US as a part of an arranged marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another treasure from Celenza!
This book is yet another treasure in this series for children. The vivid illustrations are so beautiful and they complete the story well. The author gives a good accounting of the story here, without going too far into the details that would be unpleasant for young children. This story is full of passion and the music CD that accompanies it is wonderful. My children love this series and beg to listen to the music from each book. What a great gift to give any child; the love of music!I love that my young children know the stories behind great compositions and enjoy listening to them.I have learned a thing or two from reading these books as well!Definitely worth five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures at an Ehibition
A wonderful picture book which brings true story, art and music together I have ever read. They harmonize well. Reading this book with the accompanying Mussorgsky's music is one of my greatest enjoyment, especially when in late afternoon. I highly recommend this book to the students who now are learning art or music but do not have much time for reading. It is a good opportunity for them to get started from it and will bring in something for them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kazunomiya: Prisoner of Heaven
This book begins with references to several Japanese customs, such as tea ceremonies and brush painting. More of these references repeatedly show up on almost every page of the book. This makes for a very breezy read.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest eras of change!!
12 year old, Kazunomiya is a virtual prisoner living in luxury behind the vast walls of the Japanese Palace. She is born in the year of the fire horse, which is a bad omen, especially when her father died after her birth, so they made her elder her age by one year.Kazunomiya, who lives her methodical life behind the palace walls, is going to find a new change in her life.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best one out!
Hi. I loved this book so much. It really blew me away. Lasky's books are all really good but this is the best! I have always really liked Japanese culture and when I saw this bookI said, "I got to get it! "Set in 1858, a few years after Japan's treaty with the Americans or "White Faced Devils" This book is about Kazunomiya princess of Japan. Her mother was the Emporer's favorite misstress, but she is not the favorite of others. The Empress Mother hates the mother and plots to rid of her for good. She always thinks of ways to insult the mother rudley. Kazunomiya's half brother is the new emporer and has made her a marrage proposal to a Prince whom she loves. Then Kazunomiya meets the future shogun of Japan, a boy named Yoshi about her age who she dislikes, but ends up becoming friends with him. When the old shogun dies, Yoshi becomes the new one.Kazunomiya's birthday has been changed so that she may be conpadable with her Prince and she is clearly mad about that. This book stands out in good way and is well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Story
Hanna Jansen's OVER A THOUSAND HILLS I WALK WITH YOU is a touching tribute to her adopted daughter who was orphaned in the Rwandan war. Based on her daughter's recollections of her childhood--memories both pleasant and bittersweet--Jansen weaves a tale of sorrow, hope, fear, joy, and love. For example, the early chapters of the book feature a young girl living life large. She is visiting her grandmother. She's playing with her cousins. She's fighting with her sister and brother. Her mom works outside the home, her dad is away a lot...and she has an incredibly whiny sister that she struggles with on a daily basis. She's vibrant and unaware that her world would change in just a few short years. Later chapters reveal the pain, the loss, the confusion, the fear of not knowing if one is going to survive another day. Witnessing such atrocities as seeing your parents and siblings killed by strange soldiers. Seeking help from family friends, yet being turned away because they don't want to risk dying too. Her survival story is inspiring.

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY INACCURATE!!!!
AS A GYMNAST AND FORMER ANOREXIC/BULIMIC, THIS BOOK IS VERY INACCURATE. FIRST, THIS DOES NOT PORTRAY THESE REAL DISEASES.THE INTENISITY IS FAR FROM WHAT YOU READ IN THE BOOK.YOU HAVE NO TIME FOR BOYS,FUN,FAMILY,ETC. ANYWAYS,AT THAT LEVEL OF GYMNASTICS,KIM WOULD NOT HAVE TIME FOR ANYOTHER THINGS BESIDES GYMNASTICS. SHE WOULD BE IN THE GYM FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURS, 6 DAYS A WEEK. THE ONLY REASON THAT THIS BOOK GETS 1 STAR IS BECAUSE AT LEAST IT HAS A STORY LINE. I WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THIS BOOK AT ALL. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly not fiction
I read this book several years ago and could hardly put it down until I finished it.I wrote to the publisher to ask if this book was fiction, but I got no reply.I had the impression in reading it that is was not fiction, and yet the words 'fictionalized' and 'novel' are used for it on Amazon. I was curious to know what is fiction in it and what is not.
5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
This book is a wonderful book. I have read it over 3 times now and I still want to read it again. Before I read the book I had some sibling problems, and after reading it I am now closer to my sisters. It teaches you how much you need your family and what they can do for you. I think it is more than a 5 star book. It should be a 100 star book. I think if most people in the world read it our world would be changed. It would be peaceful and people would not get into big arguments. That is how much this book can change us. If you don't beleive me you should read this wonderful, fantastic, brilliant book by Yoko Kawashima Watkins. It is one novel you'll never forget!

5-0 out of 5 stars moving
(...)I read the whole thing in under an hour. I realize I'm a little biased, but this book is absolutely amazing. A lot of the 9/11 accounts you hear are sappy and formulaic, people talking about how their lives will never be the same, blah blah blah. But these accounts are real and candid. The monologues cover the entire spectrum of Stuy students, faculty and staff. You experience the day and its effects from many perspectives. Though sometimes it reads a little slowly - there's a lot of "like" and "ummm" - you can almost forgive it because you realize that these are real people expressing their thoughts on a very intense day...and sometimes the words don't come so easily. I recommend it to everyone, in particular, adolescents, because they will have the easiest time relating to the stories of the students.

3-0 out of 5 stars With Their Eyes-9-11
WITH THEIR EYES edited by ANNIE THOMAS was a good book about September 11th. Some of the author were students, teachers, and people who work at Stuyvesant High School, two blocks away from the Twin Towers. Some of the reaction were sadness, crazy with fear, and some student were not beleiveing it was happening to the TWIN TOWERS. If you want to know the rest of the book, you have to read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Thought Today Would be LIke all The Others
This is an amazing book it is made up of poems by children who were in a school at ground zero, on September 11, 2001. The day that all Americans will never forget, stuck with so much emotion and heart break. This is how they are dealing with the loss of family, friends, and people they never thought would die this way. Together this put brilliance, tears, heart break, smiles that it's over for now, and poems that act as therapy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the culture
I thought this book would be about the houses in Cajun Country. I was wrong. This book was about being a cajun. It explained many of the 'cajun words' mean (Boucherri for example) and with pictures and easy to read text gives a very good overview of the culture. The pictures are pretty and compliment the text well. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Young Adult Santa Origin Story gets it right.
Every year, I try to read a Christmas book to put me in the season.Unfortunately, I did not receive this book until after Christmeas last year.I went ahead and read it any ways.Despite the season already passing, I did enjoy this book.It was a book that showed a youngman who meets adversity and much to our luck gets through that adversity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kringle - Major Epic for Children and Parents
This book is rich in detail, mood and has the feel of an old, timeless epic story. This is a good book for parents to expose their children to first before the great quest stories out there in fantasy fiction.
