3-0 out of 5 stars whathappenedtomaps?
This American History book is a very good, but not excellentcoverage of the History of the United States. The book istypical entry level college material. Historical information is either very interesting with good detail to boring and vague.Photographs, portraits, paintings, charts, and illustrations are abundant and beautiful helping to keep interest level moving. However, the book rapidly sheds its allure and interest. That is because it fails to deliver on providing enough, interesting and neccessary political and war detail maps associated with important major historical events.

5-0 out of 5 stars The whole family can enjoy.
I got this book for my son who is fasinated by the Titanic. We found when we got it that it has wonderful facts and it was easy for the entire family to share. I highly recomend this book for anyone who is interested in the Titanic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this at a gift shop at the Titanic Exhibit. It's a beautiful, colorful book with really cool facts. I was not aware there was a third class family (with nine children!) who all perished because they made it to the boat deck too late. It also provided a little information on Alice Cleaver (who killed her baby son a few years before). This is a great book for any Titanic fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Museum of Native American art
This is the best, most extensive book on Native American crafts for children I have ever seen.Teachers doing a unit on Native Americans will find this book a tremendous resource for creating all kinds of not authentic, but good semblances of Native American crafts.Using mostly ordinary materials, there's enough here that you can create a classroom museum and invite others to see it.In your display you can have: miniature teepees and wigwams, an "adobe" house, pottery, "bark" boxes (made of brown paper), chamois and bead pouch, coup stick, breechcloth, leggings, grass anklets (made of yarn), warbonnet, headband, breastplate, and much more. These clothing items can also be used in a play or other enactment. In addition, there are some interesting recipes, including: corn soup, steamed clover, fried squash blossoms, roasted pumpkin seeds, and other more familiar foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
More than Moccasins is this homeschooler's dream come true.Homeschooling a six year old, who is also a very hands-on learner, this book fits the bill. Each section, from Indian dwellings to pottery to traditional games, has activities that are fun and EASY TO DO!Very general household itemscan be turned into bakeable clay for pottery, teepees, etc.So many bookswith crafts require tedious materials that are difficult or cumbersome toobtain.Plus each section has a bit of information and history on thatparticular area of Native American culture ~ short enough for the youngerset but detailed enough to provide accurate historical information to goalong with the project. There are MORE activities, games, crafts andrecipes than you could ever do in an entire unit. This is a book I willreturn to over and over.GREAT JOB! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A rare American treasure that every American should own.
This book is one of America's greatest treasures!!!It has been a part of my household ever since I was a young girl.No American, black, white, or otherwise should be without this book and the knowledge of its contents. This book is an accurate depiction of how far we as African-Americans havecome and, hopefully, an insight as to where we as an American culture aregoing. This book should never have gone out of print!I recommend thatthis book be used as a textbook in all elementary school, middle school, high school, and college history courses!America as a whole will never beable to mend the wounds if we do not learn about each other, acknowledgeone another, learn to understand one another, and teach each other how toheal all of our wounds and correct the wrongs of the past.Ignorance isnot an istinct or a natural trait, it is a parasitic sore that is handeddown from generation to generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force of American History
Thorough, nuanced, psychoanalytic and balanced; a tour de force: A prodigious work of American Historical scholarship.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting study of slave culture but minimizes brutality
I would give a very mixed review to Genovese's "Roll Jordan Roll". The book does contain a good deal of interesting information on the culture, customs and spirituality developed by slaves as they tried to carve out some world of their own within their circumscribed situation.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Classic whose Time has Come and Gone
As a JD PhD who teaches and researches American slavery I can say two horrendous things about this work. First, it is considered a classic and required reading for anyone who wants to understand the institution of slavery in America. Second, it is condescending, racist and continues to contaminate otherwise intelligent thought on the topic. Genovese contends that slave control was maintained through Hegemony, a concept developed by Gramsci to explain how the ruling class under capitalism uses ideology to persuade workers to consent its own moral, political and cultural values to their own detriment, a concept that can have no meaning in a regime of physical coersion. Genovese also claims that slavery was paternalistic, where slaves and their owners had reciprical rights and obligations. For example, according to him, slaves would "consent" to whippings that they saw as "reasonable." If you want a nice, pastoral portrayal of slaves singing while they cut "massa's" cotton, well this is the book for you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I find it still helpful
Because there is so little covering Mesopotamia, I still find this book helpful even if it is not as good as the others in this series. It would be nice if more resources were written on the ancient Mesopotamian culture, especially considering what is happening today. Meanwhile, we will use what we can, including this book, in our homeschooling. We use all the books of this series, the 'Gilgamesh' series by Ludmila Zeman, "Ancient Egyptians and their Neighbors-An Activity Guide (including Hittites, Nubians, Mesopotamians and Egyptians), and "Our Young Folks' Josephus" (primary history spine covering Israel and its relationship with the surrounding cultures of that time) in our homeschool. It works well for us.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
The editorial review of this series from School Library Journal is wrong. The new editions of these books do not "expand greatly" on the original 1988 editions; they greatly contract. The 1988 edition of the books on Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia had eight chapters and 92 pages. This new edition gives them only only six chapters and 64 pages, and the word count per page is reduced. Indeed color pictures and illustrations were added and the glossary expanded, but the text is reduced to about two thirds of the original.Students are better off reading the original editions in the Watts "First Book" series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, but not much text
This book is part of the Science of the Past series. This book examines the Mesopotamians' knowledge of medicine, mathematics, astronomy and metallurgy. It concludes with a glossary, and a list of Internet sites.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guatemala in Pictures
I'm very careful about the books I buy for my 6th grade classroom, since the money comes from a fund donated by parents and grandparents of my current and former students. I chose this book because it was recommended by the Barahona Center for Studies of Books in Spanish. Although the book is in English, I think it was a very good investment. The publisher could improve the pictures but the text of this updated edition is clear, well-written, and very carefully documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vey useful classroom tool
I really like this series and the Guatemala title is an excellent addition. I am a junior-high teacher and am always scrambling for reliable books on Latin American countries and their histories. There just aren't enough out there!

1-0 out of 5 stars Few pictures, way over-priced
Ordered this "picture" book for a friend from Guatelmala. It was nearly $30 and I was very unhappy upon receipt. The book does have a lot of small pictures, but few that actually capture the beauty of Guatemala. The book has more writing than pictures, despite the title "Guatemala in Pictures".The book is the size of some children's books and at this cost, I would save the money. It is being returned to Amazon the same day received. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great story -difficult to read
The story of how Europeans "discovered" the Caribbean, and how they governed it, is a fascinating tale of adventure, greed and cruelty.Unfortunately, this book tells it in an style that is pedantic and often uses archaic terms. Here is a typical sentence.
5-0 out of 5 stars Truth and Closure.....A Must Read for Everyone!!!!!!!
I can not put into words what this journal of the truth has done for me as a African-American Male living in the United States of America.I was introduced to this book by a man of Guyanese decent who knew I needed to read this book.I have to admit it was a difficult read because my primary education only spoke of American History and there was no mentioning of any African-Caribbean contributors from the "Middle Passage" period. Now, at thirty-nine many things are clearer to me."Roots" and "Beloved" are historic, well-documented treasures and need to be used in educating all children no matter race, creed or color. To make sure what I read had some semblance of truth while in Puerto Rico I visited a sugar mill in Guanica and my heart just melted. If you read the book you will understand my feelings.I became angry because something as simple as not being forthwith with documented history such as this to young minds of American children lead to misunderstandings amongst the masses hailing from Africa, South America, The Caribbean, Asia, United States and Europe.Eric Williams I know I can not thank you in person because you are no longer here physically but your spirit lives on in your books and you will always be alive everytime one more person reads your book and awaken "Thank You"!For everyone else read the book it will cleanse your soul and feed your mind.Once you finish this read "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" by the same author.

Editorial Review

In 1954, Shelby Foote was a young novelist with a contract to write a short history of the Civil War. It soon became clear, however, that he had undertaken a long-term project. Twenty years later Foote finally completed his massive and essential trilogy on the War Between the States. His three books are prose masterpieces with lively characterizations and gripping action. Although Foote never sacrifices the truth of what happened to his penchant for artistry, his skills as a novelist serve him well. Reading all three of these books will take some time, but they are worth the investment--especially if you, like Foote, have a touch of sympathy for the South's lost cause. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Rate
As military / political narratives go, this book is first rate. Foote explains the battles as well in a comprehensible way (something that many military history books don't do). The book is interesting and moves along (something that most 800 page books don't do either).Overall, it is a vivid picture of the people and the history.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on the ACW
Mr. Foote has done one of the best outlines of the American Civil War period. If one wants to read a book that is just chocked full of interesting incidents and characters. 4-0 out of 5 stars Book of Interest
I purchased this book to read portions of it to my class. The reality of new ideas is that it takes hard work and lots of practice. Many of the ideas came from the result of what was viewed as a "mistake" by the inventor. The process of invention is as important as the product. This is an important concept to share with young students who will only try to get the "right" answer, they have to be taught to undetake challenges and see mistakes as the opportunity to learn. These types of stories inspire them to take chances. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Quite Wrong Covering Foreign Policy
My son uses it in 8th grade, and being a historian myself I checked the book out. The foreign policy part would have needed an editor with background knowledge. Especially galling was p. 754 in which the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union gets dispatched in 3 (!) sentences, (while Hitler gets several pages) two of the three saying that "Stalin executed his rivals, ordered the deaths of thousands suspected of supporting his rivals, and sent millions of Russians to labor camps. He also reorganized the nation's economy, forcing millions of people onto government-owned farms." (p. 754)....
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
This book has a lot of information about the U.S. history. IT had documents, like the Declaration of Independence, The MAyflower Compact, etc. I think you can find ample information with this great heavy book of such numerous answers to questions you have on American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this series
My 8-year old son has never read so much as when he discovered Horrible Histories. This extra large version has funny visuals and stories that are just horrible enough to grab any kids' attention-- although it's not for the faint of heart!

3-0 out of 5 stars History With All the Nice Boring Stuff Removed!
This picture book has sensational pictures and fairly detailed information on the subjects it covers.Learn how kids were sold to work in coal mines, as chimney sweeps and other stuff for next to nothing as well as medieval oddities and ancient rituals. Why some world leaders were disgusting or just outright mean.History's most evil leaders are covered from Adolf Hitler to Roman leaders. This is an excellent source for historical facts so you'll stand out at the next dinner party or if you're a bit younger ace that next school assignment.

5-0 out of 5 stars M is for Mitten
Like all of the Sleeping Bear Press books this one is also fabulous!I used this book for a literature lesson with a Michigan unit. The kids love the poems and I like the facts that go along with them. This is a delightful story that any child (especially a Michigan child) will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Children!
"M is for Michigan" makes a wonderful coffee table book, in my opinion.I don't have young children in the home anymore, but someday hope to have grandchildren and will greatly enjoy reading this lovely book to them. While we were in Whitehall, Michigan my mother bought a copy for herself as she loves well-written children's books.Later I went back to the same store and bought one of my own.I do refer to it from time to time and although I don't have a coffee table I keep it on display on my living room bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Triple Threat!
Amazing illustrations...great poetry...interesting facts. You'll find all three in this alphabet book about Michigan.Great to read aloud and great to read alone (again and again)....I highly recommend this book (and futurebooks in the series) to all elementary school teachers. My second gradershurried to grab this book after I read it aloud.Unique and such ahigh-quality book! 5-0 out of 5 stars Human History in Brief
This is one of the best book on global history, you can find every religion from east to west, north to south. You can read about all empires and kings, you can know all cultures and traditions. There is no other book which have reviewed and presented true picture of three major religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
The book was not the best textbook.....there is no study guide

5-0 out of 5 stars Pounds and Education
My daughter have to carry tree of these size books. Her school bag is 18 lbs. Why not divide all of these schoolbooks on two parts and make our kids happy. I believe school(elementary, middle and high) is not militarytraining base.Read more
