5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful story, utterly gripping
This book won the National Jewish Book Award, among others. The Devil's Arithmetic is the story of young Hannah, a modern-day Jewish girl from New Rochelle, who opens a door, and finds herself living during the Holocaust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molly's Pilgrim is a great book.
I really enjoyed reading Molly's Pilgrim. It was just the right reading level for me.It was not too hard and not too long, but it was interesting. It is about a girl who comes to a new school and is different from everyone else.It is hard for her to adjust. One of the parts that made an impression is when the teacher likes Molly's pilgrim doll best and appreciated it.I would recommend this book to girls who might get discouraged with books that are long, because even though it is not a hard book, it's really interesting.By HG.

3-0 out of 5 stars Molly's Pilgrim
The book "Molly's Pilgrim" by Barbara Cohen is about a girl named Molly. It is her first Thanksgiving and she founds out that she really doesn't have anything to be thankful for.Her classmates really make fun of her because of her unfamiliarity with American ways.
5-0 out of 5 stars Molly:a classic for ESL classes everywhere!
Barbara Cohen understands ESL students like no other author ever has!In "Molly's Pilgrim" she describes the pain of a Russian Jewish immigrant in her American school in Winter Hill.Molly is mocked and ridiculed by the most popular girl in Miss Stickley's class, and Molly's "limitations" are made even more evident because Molly and her mother don't understand Thanksgiving from the viewpoint of American culture. The assignment is to design a clothespin doll to look like a pilgrim woman, but Molly's mother designs the doll to look like a Russian immigrant girl.In the process, the class learns that pilgrims did not stop coming to America for religious freedom in the 1600s. Molly's family are pilgrims too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ashes of Roses
Ashes of Roses is a very interesting book. It has lots of historical reference to the Ellis Island immigration period, and is very well written.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ashes Of Roses is one of the greatest books out there
Rose is the main Character of Ashes Of Rose.Rose is the oldest of 4 kids in her family Maureen, Bridget, and the Baby boy Joseph. Yes of course sense she's the oldest she had to take care of the all of the kids when her parents are gone or even there but and busy. When they get into America they have to go to through test and the baby Joseph has a dieses called Trachoma and Pa has to take him back to Ireland to live with the grandma and when he's better that they can come back and bring him to live in America. Pa and Joseph come back a moth later. Rose is 16 and works at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. She has to have a job to help keep the house and everything they had by getting the money and the family needs. Rose hasn't been living in America for a little while now but still misses everything from Ireland. Just to add on to missing everything and wanting to go back the Triangle Factory catches on fire and everything inside is gone. Rose is strong enough to realize that she couldn't have done anything about it and that she has to go on with her life and just remember all the good things that happened in the time of her life. So Rose goes out and try's to find a new job. Rose and her family are getting back together because her baby brother and dad are back in the United States and back to see them, because when they came to America Joseph couldn't get in because he had a dieses called Trachoma. Realizing it has only been a month they can't wait to see Joseph and Pa. Now knowing that the family can come back together Rose is happy again and is glad to still be living in America. If you want to read a great book and feel like you have gone through and the stuff Rose has then I would recommend the book Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch.

This book is probably the best book I've ever read. I've been to Disney World and I'm obsessed with the place. It is even more fun to read if you've been there because you can follow along with where they are in the story. The story was full of suspense and the characters were good. I really enjoyed it and could not put it down. I really hope that Ridley Pearson will write a sequel. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars America
Candace Fleming goes out on a limb to tell the story of Lowji a young boy who moved with his mother and father from India to a small midwestern town in the United States of America. This story is charming, light-hearted, and well written. Lowji is an endearing character that comes to understand his new home. He is challenged by cultural misunderstandings and learning the funny expressions that English speakers of the United States often take for granted. In a very innocent way Lowji makes the adjustments to life in the USA. He makes new friends and settles into a new home. The acculturation experience is one that many new Americans may endure. Fleming handles the situation with clever conscience without vilifying either Lowji's family or the townspeople. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars creative, beautiful story
I am a third and fourth grade teacher. The librarian in our school highly recommended this book.I read it aloud to my third grade class of boys, and they were thoroughly intrigued by the book. There are several vignettes throughout the book, and each of these wonderful depections is written with breathtaking imagination. The characters and the storyline are well built.I would recommend this as an independent reading book for most fourth or fifth graders, and as a read aloud for third graders because it is written in an old-fashioned southern manner, which, in my opinion, is a bit difficult for most third graders to read fluidly by themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Journey
This book takes you on a trip of discovering wonderful things around you. This is a great book for 5th graders and up. The message is awesome for all of us to remember. Everyday, we all see the wonders of the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ole story
This is a good, fun story of adventure. I enjoyed reading which wonders Eben might find. It's nice to be taken back to when kids could use their imagination and walk through-out their town, talking to people, discovering their environment and be safe doing so! This is a heart-warming, purposeful book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
The book is good for a one time read, but it had weak pictures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kudos to the Illustrators
I have looked at and read 3 out of 5 of her books in a local bookstore.I have to agree with another review I read that summed up the teaching of English Roses as "Don't hate me because I am beatiful." and as for Abdi I would have to say you could sum up the teaching by saying, "Because I said so! That is why."It never dealved into the teaching of "certainty" or why "what we are given is for the best".I never found that connection made in the writing that would gently unfold an understanding of what she is trying to share. It mostly just leaves one with no connection but that it just somehow all works out.In all children's stories there is an element of parenting from the writer/teacher/storyteller that illuminates the magic of what it is they are teaching. I feel like I am be told a story by a slighly angry nun that wants me to just not ask questions and just accept what she says! Now! It leaves me feeling like an orphan in a catholic orphanage. Madonna herself did not have the parenting she needed growing up, she shared that in her Truth or Dare film.
5-0 out of 5 stars Abdi learnsvaluble lessions about lifeA Very Thought Provoking Book!!
This is Madonna's 4 Childrens book. It is about a young boy named Abdi who worked for an old man named Eli who owned a jewerly shop. Eli made small gems given to him by customers into more beautiful things like diamonds. People thought he had a special powers because he was so talented. He also taught Abdi important things about life. One day Habib had heard of Eli and the wonderful things he made from less pretty things. He gave Eli a necklace made of stones and said it needed to be be made into something more beautful for the Queens birthday. Eli had 4 weeks do thisbefore the deadline. Abdi and Eli worked veryhard because they did not want to dissapoint the King. The necklace was finsished but it was told it had to be delivered right away. Eli was old, tired, and weak and Abdi with some hesistance took over and went on a journey to the King and Queens Palace to deliver the beautiful necklace Eli had made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Katz and Tush
This is one of the best children's books I have ever read.In fact, it is one of the most beautiful (in language and illustrations) books I have read--period.Patricia Polacco is a master at bringing diverse, meaningful relationships to life.Every sensitive, mature parent should buy this book for his/her child!

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story, even if the illos have some bloopers...
This is the story of a loving friendship between an elderly Jewish lady from Poland named Mrs. Katz, and an African-American child named Larnel.Mrs. Katz lives alone in her apartment and doesn't have anyone to visit her.(It's not stated in the book, but, since this appears to be a predominantly African-American inner city neighborhood, one wonders if she was left behind by the Jewish community when the more affluent members moved to the suburbs? In real life it has happened...)Larnel's mother stops by to visit her every other day or so, and brings Larnel with her.5-0 out of 5 stars Diversity in its finest

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story
I really enjoyed this version of Cinderella, I also liked how Climo included a little behind the scenes of the folktale on the back pages. I'm not the biggest fan of the illustrations however, I liked the patterns that were worked onto the pages, but the faces of the characters were sort of weird and disturbing at times, I wasn't drawn into the Pear Blossom's beauty they way I would have liked to have been (as was described in Climo's words)

3-0 out of 5 stars Korean Cinderella
The book is about a girl name Pear blossom. After her mothers death, her fater remarried a woman who had another child with another man. Pear blossom's step-sister, Peony is ugly compared to Pear blossom. Peony's mother is jealous of Pear blossom's beauty so she makes Pear blossom do every single chore in the house. One day, The magistrate see's Pear Blossom one day but when he called her, she just ran away with one shoe. The magistrate takes the shoe and goes around trying to find the owner of the shoe. I thought this book is kind of boring because it is very similar to the other cinderella books. This book is no different then the other cinderella books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Cinderella
There are as many as a half dozen versions of Cinderella in Korea. The Korean Cinderella by Shirley Climo is a combination of three Korean variations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for classroom use...
I first heard about this book in a teacher magazine, and sure enough, it became an instant favorite in my second- and third-grade classroom. This was no big surprise to me as my fourteen young students represent eight different nationalities among themselves! The book has sparked someinteresting conversations about feeling different and about arriving in anew country. Any early-grade classroom, but perhaps especially those inmulticultural and international schools, should have a copy of this book. Icannot recommend it highly enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Masai culture
This book starts with a story about Masai culture and also an introduction to how to say their numbers. What really fascinated me were the facts in the back.It tells you about Tanzania, the Masai culture, some words in their language and also a little about how they name their children.I love learning about African culture so I absolutely loved this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!
We borrowed this book from the library and enjoyed it so much we bought a copy to keep. My 3 1/2 year old son loved the counting journey and learning to say all the animals and numbers in swahili. What a fun way to learn to count and speak a new language! ... Read more

I love the book and I loved the book that it is a sequel to, Nory Ryan's Song.I have read them to my 8 and 10 year old girls at night as is our habit, and they have looked forward to each new chapter with baited breath.Unfortunately, the copy of Maggie's Door that I purchased from Amazon was missing several chapters in the middle of the book, so my girls were very disappointed at missing part of the story. That is why I am giving the product a 1, but the story itself a 5.

Sean and Nory are neighbors. They both set off to reach the same place, Nory's sister, Maggie's door.Sean lost his mother and brothe on the read, then he ran into a king that was stranded. The king told Sean that if he ran back to kis castle and sent someone with a horse than he would give hem food.Sean ran back to the castle and told the guard. The guard sent someone but wouldn't give him any food.Sean went to the kitchen door and the cook gave him food.Nory left on her journey with a small sack of food. She hurt her foot a lettle way through so she couldn't move as fast. She was at the beach about to eat some food and a girl walked up and took it.The girl gave her a plank of wood. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Relatively (ha ha) good
If every adult biographer has his or her own personal style, why should the case be any different for children's book biographers? And when it comes to picture book biographies, certain names come to mind.David Adler, of course, though his books are so uncommonly dull that I tend to pity the children I hand them to (being a children's librarian and all).Peter Sis, though his bios require a great deal of time and patience to parse.James Rumford to some extent, though "Sequoyah" is probably his best bio to date. No, when it comes down to it Don Brown is the picture book biographer that nine of ten kids prefer every time.I don't have any actual statistics to back that statement up, I just say what I see.And what I see is an author who is able to take unknown heroes (Mary Kingsley, Alice Ramsey, Ruth Law, etc.) and too well-known heroes (Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, etc.) and give them interesting picture book biographies that kids will both relate to and love.
5-0 out of 5 stars Odd boy out is one great book!
Odd boy out is a wonderful book with nice illustraions of the life of Albert Einstein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and great for families!
I Loved this book. The layout and content was exciting and fun, and I really wanted to make many of these recipes. The countries/areas/continents covered are as follows: Africa, Caribbean, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Middle East, Russia, and Vietnam. The recipes vary in complexity with a guide for parents on how difficult and dangerous they were, and how much help kids might require. While some of the recipes were not exactly authentic (fortune cookies, after all, are neither Chinese, nor are they consumed there at all), but most were different enough to get a curious palette interested, but not so foreign as to alienate the slightly pickier eater.
