5-0 out of 5 stars Her favorite book
My six-year old daughter lets everyone know this is her very favorite book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great as part of a collection
My 6 year old and 8 year old enjoy the story this book tells. It helps them to ask questions and start the process of understanding the "big picture".This book along with many others written for children about kindness and Buddhism are an important part of bringing up a well rounded person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pictures and Good Stories
I purchased this book because it looked like a nice introduction to Buddah. My daugher and I both throroughly enjoyed the book. My daughter is 4 and a half and she first went through the book to look at it's pictures and attempted to figure out each story. As we read each story she enjoyed guessing what was going to happen next and how each animal would react by her first impressions by the artwork. It is nicely written for a read aloud book and contains timeless stories about interaction. I highly reccommend this book, even in you are not interested in Buddah as a religious figure, but looking for tales of common sense and relating to others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Children to Pray
I picked this book up at a garage sale for $.25 because the artwork and title called to me.I would have gladly paid more. After reading it I would classify this book as priceless.
4-0 out of 5 stars Passing on the Faith
Douglas Woods' book is a quite simply "a treasure". It contains the wisdom of Grandad who quietly but surely teaches his grandson a love of nature entwined with a deep prayer life. The story is told through the eyes of a small boy who walks in the woods with his grandfather, "being with him always made the world seem just right." The deep natural colours of P.J. Lynch's illustrations bring these walks to life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Silence of Prayer
The Buddha teaches that the more that one says about enlightenment (or about god), the less accurate it is.No, this book is not specific, dictating what prayer is, who prayer should be directed at, or what major words should be repeated until they have no meaning. This book is about prayer. It is about silence. It is about seeing god in all creation. It is about aesthetics.Hesitant with dogma, but abundant in beauty, this book was a marvelous tool to discuss what prayer means with my children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage dePaola!
Tomie dePaola has the unequaled ability to tell a story and weave into it profound elements of faith that can touch children and adults with equal depth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Christmas with Spanish flavor
I bought this book for our Lutheran church library. It is excellent. It tells about the Hispanic Christmas custom of Las Posadas, Mary and Joseph's search for a place to stay the night of Jesus' birth.Lupe and Roberto, two townspeople, are selected to play Jose and Maria in the Las Posadas celebration, but when their pickup gets bogged down in the snow in the mountains above Santa Fe, two strangers come to play Jose and Maria instead, leaving the readers to wonder at the miraculous event --who were those two? What a lovely book.

Simply Divine is Simply Irresistible. Ms Jackie, has done it again! I finished this book in 2 days because I could not put it down. Divine soon learns that their is more to life that material things like Family, Love, Forgiveness, and God. This story is a good read for any age group, teenagers and adults alike. I am 28 years old and I will say thatI really honestly enjoyed this book and I just can't wait for the follow up. It was just warm and enduring and just plain GOOD!. Ms. Jackie just proved what a damn good author she is, it's not a lot of authors that can write books that appeal to both teens and adults. Go Ms. Jackie GO!

Editorial Review

Some originals of the earliest Chinese-Buddhist sutras still exist--printed in gold ink on deep indigo paper. To see one is to sink into it. Demi, devout Buddhist and illustrator of children's literature, recreates the stories in the form of a children's book with smooth writing and stunning brushwork. These moral tales, taken from Jataka literature of Buddhism, relate engaging incidents among humans and animals that highlight a valuable lesson, each complete with a final moral. Children are sure to fall in love with this masterful combination of art and moral education. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddha Stories
An excellent book. Most of the stories have a theme of wonderful compassion and it is set out in such way that children are encouraged to think about what is really of value in life. We borrowed this book from the library many times.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good collection but poor choice of colors for illustration.
This is an excellent collection of about 10 jataka tales of Buddha's past lifetime, in about one page per story.Younger children, however may not enjoy reading the book on their own because of the color illustrationquality, i.e., light gold on black paper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Devotional Book for Young Adult, (Adults will enjoy it too)
Is there a difference between joy and happiness? Jeanette Hanscome knows there is. Born with achromatopsia, a rare vision affliction, she had trouble learning colors, as well as other visual problems. No one, teachers, or doctors, expected her to have good prospects for a normal life. However, there are no limits to what God can do. With His help Jeanette graduated from high school, went on to college, and lives a full, happy life. She has written a book for young adults, using anecdotes, humor, and questions to lead the reader to a greater understand of how to handle the problems teens face every day, in school, or at home. You'll find discussions on tough subjects, like anger, hurting others, worry, and forgiveness. The reader will come away with a better understanding of joy and how to attain it. There is even room for journaling and a daily prayer page. This is an excellent devotional book for the young person on your list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Combines text with beautiful paintings & superb photography
Our Most Dear Friend is an excellent picturebook introduction for young readers to the Bhagavad-gita, the world's oldest religious scripture. This "Song of God" originated about five thousands years ago and is still read and revered by 850 million Hindus around the world. Highly recommended for school and community multicultural picturebook collections. Our Most Dear Friend combines text with beautiful paintings and superb photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photography, Great message!
Vishaka's Bhagavad-gita for Children has been one of my 11-yr. old's favorite books since we first purchased it 3 years ago. Kids of almost any age can appreciate the brightly-colored, mind-capturingillustrations/photographs, and the spiritual message of the Bhagavad-gitais presented at just the right reading level for elementary-grade readersto understand. All in all, the presentation is very attractive and willappeal to any child, anywhere. This book provides a great yet subtle way tointroduce good values and principles of good character into the minds ofour children, as well as a healthy respect for the concept of a supreme, loving God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely
This is a very lovely, charming book.Deceptively simple, yet ultimately quite deep.In that sense, it reminds me a bit of the famous serious of drawings of an ox and his master; this is the series that serve to remind us of the search for, and discovery of, ourselves -- wisdom -- whatever.
5-0 out of 5 stars The ethnic artwork of Vo-Dinh Mai is a perfect complement
In The Hermit And The Well, Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, scholar, and human rights activist Thich Nhat Hanh has written a story of a young Vietnamese boy who climbs a mountain in the hope of meeting a famed hermit that lives there. What the boy finds is the secret of his own happiness. The ethnic artwork of Vo-Dinh Mai is a perfect complement to Hanh's marvelous tale showcasing the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty that is always around us -- if we would only see it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not only for muslim children
This book is so informative and well-written it should be in every muslim house. However, this book is not only very good for muslim children, it is also an excellent book for non-muslim children to read and learn more about islam. It can be used as an excellent tool in a classroom to dispel any misconceptions non-muslim children may carry against their muslim classmates. They will be able to learn more about prayer, fasting, eid and other things that their muslim classmates and friends follow in their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be read by all educators and anyone who works with diverse populations.
This is a wonderful book. It's informative, non-judgemental, and non-proselytizing. I was especially impressed that the authors managed to tell a series of situational stories from a child's point of view. My favorite was the one about the little boy who becomes separated from his parents at Mecca and finds shelter with a kindly old man. This book covers such topics as Muslim minority children having to choose between adherences to their religion, e.g. forgoing observance of prayer times and dietary restrictions for the sake of convenience and fitting in with the crowd. I could feel the self-consciousness myself when a little boy overhears his friends mistaken his mother for a ghost after being frightened by her veil, and the guilt when a young succumbs to temptation and devours the delicious candies that contain pork byproducts.
4-0 out of 5 stars Timely and informative
A timely book that fills gap, Muslim Child consists of 8 stories that illustrate the history of Islam, the 5 pillars of Muslim religion (belief, praying, fasting, charity and the pilgrimage to Mecca) and introduce traditional Islamic customs of dress, diet, and celebration.Written by a practicing Muslim, the stories stress that the religion is worldwide with diverse practitioners, and shows Muslim children struggling with fitting in while keeping the faith.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Gift
If you are looking for "spiritual" instead of "religious" this is a beautifully illustrated and touching book that makes a perfect gift for new parents, baptisms, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Parent
I wanted to read easy-to-understand payers and verses to my 6-year old son, so I searched Amazon and reviewed many books on this subject. I was sold on this book's illustrations and was not disappointed on that score: The Illustrations are wonderful. However the "take a closer look" guide did not offer an opportunity to review the text or prayers themselves. The pictures alone piqued my son's interest and we bought the book. Unfortunately, many of the prayers are long and tedius, losing a younger child's interest within the first six lines. The text content is incongruent with the illustration's message of young, light-hearted, age-appropriate prayer. The attempt at multiculturalism and non-demonitionalism misses the point of delivering short, sweet, enjoyable verse suited for children; prayers that will encourage children to want to pray instead of associating prayer with tedium and boredom. The book review should have indicated an age-appropriate range. My son is a smart and attentive kid who loves to listen, but he grew quickly disappointed with and disintersted in the prose.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining introduction to Egyption Gods, for kids
Beautifully illustrated children's book. Gives basics of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, ancient Eryptian beliefs in afterlife, mummies, pyramids, and more. Great for kids, with or without a trip to the museum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Start for Kids
My young daughter has gotten into mythology and ancient religion and this is one of the few books I've found geared towards the young reader. It contains a lot of good beginner information about the Gods/Goddesses of Egypt. I highly recommend this book for the Level 2 reader.

3-0 out of 5 stars Egyptian Gods and Goddesses
This book is good for people just starting out on studying mythology. It was a little simplistic but easy to follow, some books on mythology can getting confusing if you aren't good at remembering who is who but this onewas easy to keep track with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Depth and Sensitivity
Portrays a familiar school situation with depth and sensitivity. Other kids at Bilal's new school tear off his sister's head scarf and make anti-Muslim remarks.Bilal feels he needs to hide his Muslim identity, and we (the readers) understand why.We all understand what it's like to be singled-out and afraid, even if our specific situation is not the same as Bilal's.Some concerned adults help Bilal feel comfortable about embracing his identity as a Muslim, but Bilal finds a way to make peace with the bully all on his own.Bilal's solution has to do with teamwork and sportsmanship, and it gives us insight into Bilal's developing character. Spirituality is built into the story in a subtle and satisfying way. This multi-layered story will appeal people of many faiths. Bilal's story transcends categories of religion or nationality.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'd say "she isn't fooling anybody," but she is.
Ho hum! Another dealing-with-bullies books like we had in the 70's where all you had to do was tell the bully to respect you and he did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
It was so nice to see a book that showed how difference can be overcome by simply standing up for yourself. I think every third grade classroom should have this book. It is also nice to see Muslims portrayed in a postive light for a change.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing resource for Muslim parents and children
As an American Muslim, I have always been dismayed at the lack of learning tools that are available to Muslim children growing up in the Western world.Yusuf Islam has helped fill this void with the creation of this book and especially the CD or tapes that can be bought seperately.Read more
