Editorial Review

Sandra Markle, author of more than 36 nonfiction books for children and a former elementary school teacher, brings her expertise to this magnificent exploration of the world of bats. The simple language and easy-to-follow explanations ("Check out the W-shaped back teeth of this insect-eating Nyctalus bat. They're just right for crushing and slicing crunchy insects into a lumpy bug pudding.") make Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars everybody loves big squids!
As a longtime fan of cephalopods in general and squids in particular, I was very impressed by this book. It's quite good at being accessible to readers of a fairly young age while not "dumbing down" the science at all. It has a variety of color plates, both from giant squid dissections (from the lab of Clyde Roper, one of the world's foremost experts on the giant squid) and from pictures of other squids in their natural environment. (Until recently, no one had ever seen or photographed a giant squid in its environment at all, so showing smaller squids is really the best way to illustrate these amazing animals... and Ms. Markle is careful to describe which pictures are giant squids and which are smaller ones.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good children's book
This book is easy-to-read, informative, well-illustrated, and fun. Both of my children loved it, and so did I!If you're looking for a science-oriented snake book for a young child, you scarcely could do better than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book because it was cool.Jeff S - age 6.
From Jeff - Age 6: This book has excellent pictures of snakes eating stuff. It is cool because one snake has a horn (a rinocerous viper).Snakes smell with their tounge. The book has a picture of a snake squeezinga mouse. Some snakes can digest shells and some spit them out. Snakes caneat something bigger then their head. Some snakes have venom and fangs. Ilearned a lot about snakes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for Midwest Book Review
As a family we enjoy reading both fiction and non-fiction and I chose this non-fiction book because of the topic. I didn't know much about killer bees before I read this book, but 40 pages later I can now say that I do. The author does a good job relaying the factual information to the age level it was intended: 7 and older. Because of the topic and age group, good pictures of killer bees are very important to the story and the book is full of them. Each photograph is nicely showcased in the book and relevant. This book will teach and show what a killer bee looks like, how this insect behaves and explain things about their life cycle as well as how killer bees got their name. The author, a former elementary school science teacher, has written a series of Outside and Inside non-fiction books ranging in topics from the Giant Squid to Bats.
4-0 out of 5 stars oh no !!!killer bees!!!
This book will teach you all you need to know about killer bees.It includes factsabout how honey is made, and the roles of workers, queens, and drones. Sandra Markle shares her research on how killer bees differ from familiar honeybees. You can't tell just by looking at them. You must observe the hive and the bees actions over a period of time to tell more about them.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS FOR THE REALITY
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK.IT HAS PROVEN TO BE SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS.CHILDREN GET BORED SKIMMING THE PRETTY SIDE OF LIFE OVER AND OVER BECAUSE ADULTS DON'T HAVE THE PATIENCE AND ANSWERSIT TAKES TO BE HONEST.CHILDREN KNOW THAT THERE IS MORE TO LIFE THAN WHAT THEY ARE SHOWN. KANGAROOS ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMPLEX ANIMALS IN THE WORLD (POUCHES ANDHOPPING ARE THE LEAST OF IT).THIS BOOK SHOWS THAT IN A WAY THAT IS NOT"GROSS"; BUT, REAL, HONEST AND EDUCATIONAL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Purposfully explicit
The beauty of this series is the slightly gruesome nature of the photographs. While adults may wrinkle their noses and say "Ick," elementary school children find them very appealing.Kids especially enjoyknowing their elders are "grossed out" by the pictures!

1-0 out of 5 stars Outside and Inside Kangaroos
Although this book contains incredible photographs I am reviewing it unfavorably based on the age range (4-8). I bought it to use in a Kindergarten classroom. The pictures are too explicit revealing internalorgans, stomach and undigested food, the womb, leg muscles and tendons. Luckily, I looked at it before putting it in the classroom.I feel thatthe students would have been frightened, not only by the graphic nature ofthe pictures but also by wondering how the pictures were taken.Akin to adissection book.Definitely for older children and even then, for thosenot squeamish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Take the title literally
This book focuses on the anatomy of sharks, the inside and the outside, hence the title. The book does not go into detail about the various kinds of sharks or where in the world they live, but we have a brief glimpse at the various kinds of sharks and we get a gist for the variety: from the gentle and slow-moving whale shark to the predator great white shark to the very strange, camouflage-capable wobblegong. Clear explanations of the anatomy of the sharks are given, fully understandable to my 6 year old. An example of what is thoroughly explained is how they get oxygen from the water, how the gills operate, and how the plankton eaters filter the plankton from the ocean. There are also interesting comparisons between fish and sharks, highlighting how they are different from one another. Read more
