My son loves this book.He always chooses this book for me to read to him.The book repeats "Were going on a bear hunt, were going to catch a big one, it's a beautiful day, were not scared" several times throughout the book.He likes the illlustrations. He points to the dog and the kids throughout the book.I like the book too.You won't go wrong buying this book for your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Least 5 Times A Day!
My son cannot get enough of this book!We have read it at least 5 times a day for the past 6 months.A game popped up as a result too . . . I hide one of his teddy bears and we go on a bear hunt to find him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for exciting kids about reading
This is a superb book for kids - we have both the board version for younger kids and the larger standard paper version and its one of the books which I think is ideal for friends who are about to have babies.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TWIST TO AN OLD FAVORITE
The story of the Three Little Pigs has been around for years and years and few children, nor adults, for that matter do not know of it.Here we have the roles of the "bad guy" completely reversed. The kids love this one and think it is truely funny.I did like the fact that the wolves did not receive the bad press that they normally receive in such tales and I did like the fact that even though the Big Bad Pig was truely bad in the beginning, he did indeed have redeeming features. The illustrations were great and the text followed the illustrations perfectly. This is a fun book to read to the class.I highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story, distracting pop-ups
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig has been a favorite story in our household for many years. We love it!I can't recommend this story enough!!!!The big bad pig is a tyrant and the wolves are such ingenious engineers, it makes the Big Bad Pig look even more formidable with his sledgehammer and dynamite. I recently purchased the pop-up version for a friend, but can honestly say I enjoyed reading the ordinary book more than the pop-up version. The pop-ups were very distracting and I think it takes away the energy from the story and the reader becomes disengaged, trying to fiddle with all the contraptions.I vote for the good old-fashioned book version any time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Bad Pig is Good
When I told my son that I bought a book called "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig" he just laughed at me and corrected me.When we got it, he couldn't get enough of the book.I think he has it memorized now! :) Very cute ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Baby's Got Rhythm--Fun and Realistic Toddler Play!
The talented and prolific Helen Oxen bury ("We're Going on a Bear Hunt," the "Tom and Pippa" series) is a master at board books as well as picture books aimed at a slightly older audience.Clap Hands is a large format board book (there should be more of these!) showing four adorably dressed youngsters at play and snack time. For once, we see kids as they really look: Wearing oversized hand-me-downs that show evidence of the kids' pulling and tugging at them, and generally flopping around.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great kids book!
All 3 of my girls enjoyed this book (a series of 4). I even bought the set of 4 books for my nephew and niece. They are quick, catchy reads. Kids love the big pictures of the babies.

1-0 out of 5 stars You can keep this book.
As the parent of a child who was a voracious reader; (we read tons of books together when she was small) I really was not at all impressed with this book. I purchased this book for my friend's little boy, based on the reviews here and was so disappointed. Granted some time had passed since I bought children's books, but I have started buying them again for my grandaughter. I returned it because I felt too embarassed to give this book. The only cute feature about this book is the eye catching illustrations that would appeal to toddlers. Story or content wise, it's about as much fun to read as watching paint dry. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The sing along song is OK
THere are so many songs on this CD.MY son only listens to the 1st one.As soon as its over, he wants to hear it again. He's 3 and not yet interested in the other ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected or hoped for
This CD is rather a disappointment. It starts off quietly with somewhat hushed voices that I hardly knew it had begun.I have gotten used to the vibrant and joyous toddler cds that this was a surprise and very disappointing considering how exciting the story can be.I like to read Going on a Bear Hunt in a happy exicted voice with little toddlers following along. This is not that story with any of the same excited enthusiasm.I'm sorry i bought this one without hearing any of the tracks first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has something for all young children ages 2-5
I work with different age groups from 0-5years old.Kids as young as 1 year old enjoy the story telling portion of this cd. I do alot of handplays/body movements which the kids mimic as the story is playing. I use the cd alone and in conjunction with the book.Kids love it either way!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for under 18 months
I would have liked this book for my son when he was younger, but made the mistake of buying it for him at age two.Though he was slightly amused by the ending "tickle, tickle" it is difficult to hold his attention. Also, since my child does like to spend time looking at pictures in books, it is difficult for him to hear the rhyme because they are spaced out on different pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Words, but Images Entrance Son
When I first bought Helen Oxenbury's Clap Hands I read some reviews that didn't care for it because of the simplicity of the words used.I am so glad that I went ahead with the purchase.Tickle, Tickle came next for us, and I'm just about to receive two others by Oxenbury. My 20-month-old son just loves them, and has for a few months now.We have reading time every night before bed.Sometimes I read while he's still playing, and sometimes he sits down with me and we look at the books together. With the Oxenbury books he stops what he's doing and comes over to look at the books with me.On some pages he will point out the different objects for me to say; on others he will say the words. His favorite is the page in Clap Hands when the babies are eating."Open wide and pop it in."He points to the cups and the bear on the bib for me to say the words, but he says "quack" for the duck on the bib, and "apple" and "orange."Sometimes he will just pull out the book himself and turn the pages and study the pictures. There is such detail on each page that it's easy to see why he enjoys them so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good starter book for under 18months old
This is an excellent starter book for young children to teach them the love of language. It is necessarily short and the illustrations are necessarily simple. It has only a few pages and it is a very simple tickle story.

5-0 out of 5 stars APleasure
This book is loved and enjoyed by my students (1st and 2nd grades)each and every year. The rhythm and repeat of Ms. Cooke's words captivate and charm. They are tickled with the antics of the family as they each arrive at the party. We have had great discussions about the choice of play and family differences each member brings to the party. Her message reminds each person listening that they too are loved "so much" by their family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shame about the fighting...
We have this book at our local child care centre. I love the rhythm of the language and I love the illustrations and my little boy does too. What I don't like is the "pow-pow", "I want to fight the baby" part. It's not an idea that I want to encourage at all - some good natured wrestling can be fun, of course, but it needs a lot of explanation. All of the carers naturally substitute other words to illustrate the story; usually I say that the boys want to tickle the baby. Parents and carers who want to promote a less violent world should be aware of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who's the center of attention? Baby!
My son loves this story! He is 14 months old, and we checked this out from the library 3 weeks ago.He has wanted us to read it to him every night before he goes to bed. It's perfect at bedtime, because it ends with the baby going to sleep after the most wonderful day you can imagine.Though it's Daddy's birthday party that's brought everyone to the house, baby is the one that everyone wants to kiss and hug.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating for little ones
We have all of Oxenburys books in this series (Clap Hands, Say Goodnight, All Fall Down & Tickle Tickle). We also have her Big Baby Book as well. My daughter is 13 months old and loves books, but the books she continually picks out and hands to me are the books in this series. She adores them. My husband and I have probably read these hundreds of times to her, and she is captivated by the art work and the rhyme. A definite must have for your little one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating to a baby!
I have all 4 of these Oxenbury books and both of my kids have been absolutely captivated by them.It is the only book that they will just sit and actively listen and follow from between 6-15 months.Watch their faces while another reads it to them and you will be amazed at how the respond to the simple, large pictures and rhymes. As an adult, I am attracted to more detailed and complex illustrations, but this is what a BABY likes!Any of her books are a perfect way to introduce you child to book reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerized!
This is my 8 month old's favorite book. Everytime I read it to her, which is everyday for the past several months, she goes into a state of bliss. She loves the big, happy, bouncy multi-cultural babies and I always sing the words to her for added pleasure.Great choice for infants. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BORING!!
There is nothing sweet, charming, endearing or amusing about this book. Illustrations are nice and large. It's just dry and boring. Yes it is written for tiny ones and one cannot expect too much in such a short book written for a baby. Completely lacking in imagination, in my opinion, this book is blah. There is so much better out there. Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Surprising Dystopian Epic
You cannot experience the full impact of "Say Goodnight" without also reading the companion works, "Clap Hands," "All Fall Down," and "Tickle, Tickle".Ms Oxenbury weaves a world which first lulls you into comfort with what appears to be non-violent multicultural values.Upon repeated readings (and you must read all four, with "Say Goodnight" as the last) you finally realize this was not her goal all along.4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Sweet
If you're just about to start reading to your baby, you might want to get this book because it has all the core ingredients to captivate a baby's attention. It's pretty short (10 pages), has very simple text with huge and colorful illustrations. But, if you have long started reading to your child, this book might be a bit of a frustration. It's just too simple. Once you have engaged your child into the daily reading activity for quite sometime, you can actually hold her attention for a good 5-10 minutes. To me, make full use of that time by reading books that have a bit more text than this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for reading readiness...
This book lets you teach 44 vowel-spellings with 213 vocabulary words.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad lesson for kids
Animals use violence to force a farmer out of his house and run him off his own land. There is a good reason why this is on the list of recommend children's reading at the website for the US Socialist party. Violence toward land owners is no lesson for kids to learn. Very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it!
I borrowed this from the local library to read to my son and it soon became his favourite book. I love it! I especially like the picture of Farmer Duck rounding up the hens - he looks crazy and it makes me laugh! It's funny to imagine a duck doing all that farm work! You feel empathy and sympathy for the duck. It's a great book that kids can memorise too. Go, Farmer Duck, go!! Although, I did find it rather interesting that the duck was giving the orders to the animals at the end of the book. You'd think he'd be grateful that they got rid of the lazy farmer, and instead he's bossing them around! He, he, he. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars She's real good, but not very very good! (I'll explain!)
I stumbled upon this book in the library and was charmed by this feminist revision to the usual Genesis story. It takes the Judeo-Christian creation tale, and both makes God a woman, ands tells the tale in a charming folksy Southern drawl that had me and my kids chuckling away. "That's good, that's real good!" the great Mother says of her handiwork.
5-0 out of 5 stars Big Momma Makes Me Smile
This is justa great book. Every time I think of it, I smile. Every time I read it, I like it better. My 18 month old son loves the illustrations (esp. the fish) and my 5 year old daughter likes it well enough. When we all choose a book to read, this is the one I reach for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Your momma don't dance...
I've read some pretty fabulous books illustrated by Helen Oxenbury in my day. She's one of those rare artists that pay close attention to fine incomparable details. As for author Phyllis Root, I'd not had the pleasure of reading one her tales until I picked up "Big Momma Makes the World". Now I read reviews and descriptions of this book long before I saw it myself. These reviews would summarize the plot and even lift enjoyable passages from the text. I liked what I read and I liked that the reviewers liked what they read. It was with the greatest shock imaginable that I finally located this book and found, to my amazement, that Big Momma was a big white chick. Hunhuna? Now you might think it a bit prejudiced of me to have leapt to the conclusion that Big Momma, the godlike figure in this tale, was black but that's exactly what I did. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Animal House
Calling this book "surreal" would be too obvious and to under-describe it. It's very slight, but has a spooky charm - partly because Ivor Cutler leaves out a lot of the "sensible" stringsthat would hold a more earthbound story together. There are mad leaps inthe narrative that keep you hooked, waiting for the next one - quite apartfrom the joy of the central, inspired idea. A family wake up one morning tofind their house blown away, except for the electrical points, the milk onthe doorstep, and the eggs for their breakfast. Naturally enough, since MrDiamond is a zookeeper, the solution is to bring animals from the zoo toform a new house - elephants and camels for walls, snakes for roof beams, birds for roof covering. Fireflies make light and heat, and their pillowsthat night are warm, furry, and breathing. Then their old house turns up....... This book has enough tiny delights in it to bring you back timeafter time - our 9-year-old daughter still takes huge pleasure in it 5years after we first got a copy. Now we want more - to give as presents!Somebody please reprint! ... Read more

This book and all the others by Helen Oxenbury are wonderful for pre-toddlers and toddlers. Both of my children, one boy and one girl, loved them. They are simple and take about a minute to show your kids (not counting all the requests for "again" you will get).My children asked for them more than any other book we own.My wife and I give these books regularly to friends expecting children of their own.I couldn't recommend them higher as reading material for your own children, or as gifts for others. ... So far this has been a great book.It was about a girl that saw a rabbit he was very late for something.Alice wanted to see what he was late for so she folled him into his rabbit hole.Andshe kept folling him. This is my review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extra Credit
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an exciting fantasy novel by Lewis Carroll. His other works include Alice Through the Looking Glass, Phantasmagoria, Sylvie and Bruno, and Rhyme? And Reason? All of which are very creative and imaginative, but his best would have to be Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The book is enjoyed by most, but fantasy lovers and mature young adults seem to really love it.Once you read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, you get hooked and you have to read more.Carroll paints a vivid picture of Wonderland and all of it's crazy inhabitants you find around every corner. Each chapter has a different plot and character even though the complete novel has a pretty well known main idea.Carroll keeps it interesting all through the book. You can really tell that he's trying to get the point across of the world not being perfect and it would be better if people just went with the flow.I would definitely recommend this to my friends. Most of them would enjoy it.It is a really fun, fun book!-Review By Madi Joiner

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Pictures Get Your Interest
It was the cover picture of Alice and the Rabbit that caught my attention. Out of the many editions of Alice in Wonderland, I would recommend Alice's Adventures in Wonderland illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. Helen Oxenbury is a talented illustrator who won England's Kate Greenaway Medal for illustrators. She draws Alice like a modern girl very different from Disney's Alice with neat hair, an apron, and the poofy dress. Some of the pictures are coloured and some are not. This is the unabridged story with a bigger font than the others which is good for reading because alot of other novels have very small writing which is hard to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Book(s)
Our son received the boxed set of four tiny board books including "I Can", "I Touch", "I Hear" and "I See" as a gift when he was born. These were the first books we ever read to him and we started when he was just a few months old.4-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book
This book didn't look that interesting to me, but we took it out of the library after my 15-month-old daughter expressed interest in it.She loved it so much that we ended up ordering a copy for ourselves and she never seems to get tired of it.As we read all the things the baby can do, she actually acts out the actions (i.e., walk, jump, slide down our leg, etc.).It seems to be one of those deceptively simple books that babies identify with more than their parents would guess!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and simple enough for babies and toddlers
My daughters found this fun when they were babies and toddlers, and I found it simple enough to keep the attention of such young children. It can be a fun activity book, with the children mimicing everything they see. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspires a 3-year old to comb her hair
The fun that I had in reading this to my three-year old daughter was inspiring her to tolerate getting her hair combed. She just hates getting her hair done, and now on days when her long hair is especially entangled - we check to see if she has "Frannie B. Kranny" hair. We got outside and see if a bird will land in her hair. We laugh, and then she is O-K with getting her hair combed, and then we feed the birds in our backyard.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful girl, great hair
this is a favorite with my class of 3-5 year olds. They like the idea of a bird making a nest in Franny's hair and I like the relatioinships between family members, the independent attitude of Franny and the choices she makes. Please consideradding this to your library and reading it often. It is a gem.
