Editorial Review

A deer in his canoe, a bear attack, a leg stabbed with anarrowhead--it's just another week in the life of 16-year-old Brian Robeson. In his opinion, this beats a date at Mackey's Pizza Den, a fight with a bully, and a video game at the mall any day. After having survived a plane crash and 54 days in the Canadian wilderness several years earlier, Brian can't seem to fit into "civilization." The world of high school and family life makes no sense anymore. So Brian begins to plan. It's time to return to the woods. This time, though, he makes no plans to come back home. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brian's Return
I think Brian's return is one of the better books I've read because it relates to nature. The reason why I like nature so much is because I live out in the country so I'm out in the woods alot just like Brian. My favorite part in the book was when he scared the bear away. I liked that part because it was really suspenseful. If I would have to go up against a bear with a bow. I wouldn't wait until it got sloser to me if it was already tring to corner me like it did to Brian.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Life in Dog Years
This is an autobiography about Gary Paulsen. He talks about nine different dogs in this book. He talks about them, because they have helped him threw hard times when he was kid and still now as an adult. He picks them up off the street and from the pounds. He is an animal lover because of his younger experiences with animals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I read this book as a diversion from my usual reading, and consumed it in one sitting at a Starbucks. This was a great book about the life of a man and his friends. Paulsen love for dogs and animals seems to be rooted in his isolation as a young boy, as he moved from place to place, not fitting in new communities, and living with highly dysfunctional, neglectful parents. As a child and teen, he bonded with the dogs that became a part of his life and his friends. As an adult his affection for his childhood friends never left him and he seeks to befriend those that befriended him in his early life. My Life in Dog Years will make you laugh and cry, and remind you that friendships can be made and found in the most unlikely times and places. Read and enjoy! Excellent job, Mr. Paulsen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Harris and Me Editorial Review
Harris and Me by Gary Paulsen is a great book that accurately depicts a child's thoughts. At the beginning of the novel you're introduced to an 11-year-old boy who is often sent off to live with relatives because of his parents drinking problems. The reader immediately learns about the boy's past and the reader is also hinted to what's going to take place in the near future.Paulsen uses exposition and foreshadowing well while explaining the boy's story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Harris and Me
My favorite book is Harris and me .I like where Harris was playing cowboy'sand Indians . My #1 thingthat I mostly like is when Harris fell off the horse to swing on another horse.
5-0 out of 5 stars A farmers summer
Harris and Me is an adventurous book that teaches about life in the farm. The book tells the story of a 12 year old boy that moves from the Philippines to the farm to visit his second cousin, Harris. The boy visits Harris because his mom and dad are alcoholics and sometimes argue with each other. After Harris and the boy finish their chores, they play random games, which lead to Harris getting smacked by his sister, Glennis on the back of his head. He plays any games his creative mind thinks of. One day, when Harris was on his bike with an engine attached to it, he lost control, screamed like a baby, and flew right out of his cloths. After the crash, Harris and the boy laid down relaxing until Glennis called them in. Read how Harris and the boy continue to be friends even after the policeman takes the boy away from Harris. I usually do not like reading, but I was surprised to see that I couldn't take my eyes off this book. Readers who like adventure stories should buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages
Gary Paulson's Dogteam is a beautifully written prose poem that describes a dogteam's running on a cold winter's night. As the author takes the reader across the moonlit trail, the sensory, descriptive words make you feel you are truly on the trail with the team. The watercolor illustrations by Ruth Wright Paulson capture the eagerness the dogs feel for running at night. I use this book with third grade students to model the use of descriptive language in writing. The children love the book and read it over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
Beautiful illustrations and vivid, descriptive sentences! I purchased this book to teach my first graders about descriptive writing. They were in awe of the book! Living in the south, most of them have never even seen snow or even heard of dog sledding. After having been dog sledding myself I knew I had to find a way to share the experience and this book was it! It is truly one of my favorites!

4-0 out of 5 stars Taking your dogsled on a moonlit night run
Author Gary Paulsen ran the Iditarod dogsled race across Alaska twice, so when he says "Nothing in running dogs is quite so beautiful as a night run," he knows of what he speaks. We have a dog sled race up in this neck of the woods each year, and I have watched sleds racing along a wooded path by moonlight. That experience is captured in "Dogteam," as Paulsen tells of the experience in a prose poem that tries to communicate to the rest of us what it is like to run your dogs through the snow to get home on a cold night with a full moon. The illustrations, by Ruth Wright Paulsen, are done in ink and watercolor. She manages a seventy-dog kennel and helps train Iditarod dogs with her husband, Gary, so you have to look at these drawings and wonder which of their charges have ended up in this book. This is a book that those who love Huskies and the sight of them mushing through the snow, will enjoy. ... Read more

As an Eskimo boy journeys to find himself, he must survive the harsh conditions of the frozen tundra. When Russel realizes he is unhappy with his way of life, he goes to an old Eskimo named Oogruk for help.Oogruk teaches him how the old Eskimos once lived and then, giving him his five dogs and a sled, tells him that in order to become a man, he must leave the village and travel north. He takes the dogs and does just that, only stopping to make camp at night and during storms, until he realizes he needs to find food.Luckily, the dogs pick up the scent of a herd of caribou and, with their help, he is able to kill four using the bow and arrows Oogruk gave him. They keep traveling and one day come across snowmobile tracks which lead them to a snowmobile that had run out of gas.Beside it, there are footprints that lead them to a pregnant woman lying in the snow.Russel makes a shelter and revives her back to health. She tells him her name is Nancy and decides to join them on their journey.Soon they run out of food and, when they are on the brink of starvation, Russel is fortunate enough to take down a polar bear with a lance.Soon after, though, he finds that Nancy is sick and they start off towards the nearest village for help.Dogsong is a captivating story filled with adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
This was a great story!!! I loved it! If you are looking for a book, this would be the book to read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I think that Tucket's Travels is a good book because there are so many adventures and I really like finishing one book after another. There are a lot of details and I think that only 8 years old or up should read the book.My favorite part of the book is when Mr Tucket gets away from the Pawnee tribe of Indians. The characters are Mr Grimes, Francis Tucket-Mr Tucket, Lottie-Charlotte, and Billy. My favorite character is,other than Mr Tucket, Lottie.I think Tucket's Travels is the best book I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly touching bond between a boy and his hero
Generally I am not a fan of Westerns, but I absolutely loved Tucket's Travels. Though I enjoyed the adventure and historical aspects, I was most touched by the unusual and noble bond between Mr. Grimes, the one-armed mountain man, and Mr. Tucket. One doesn't come across this special kind of friendship often in today's literature.I was reminded of the old classic, Shane. I am pleased that in this day and age there are still people writing about not only that theme, but also of individuality and the confidence that is gained when one is competent. What an excellent model to hold up for young people today.Parents can definitely feel good about letting their children read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
What is wrong with these kid reviewers?I admit, I've never been really fond of Gary Paulsen's books, but i was pleasantly surprised.Seriously, every kid reviewer who hated this book should go out and get a life!Very well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wilderness Adventures
Gary Paulsen. "Paulsen is the best man-against-nature adventures writing today" according to Publisher Weekly. He lives with his wife Ruth in Minnesota. In "Wood Song" Gary talks about his like in the woods with his dogs. The book is about how unforgiving the wild can be and how he had to learn to deal with death in a hole new way. In just the first few chapters he talks about how on one of his first runs with a sled team he encounters a pack of wolfs chasing a deer. Also he learns that he knows very little about running a dog sled team in the begging, but once he starts running with the team more and more he starts to understand them and why they like to run. The book talks about how close Gary gets to his first led dog Storm. The book then talks about when he ran the Iditarod in Alaska. How he had to survive against the elements with only his dogs as company. In the book Gary talks about where he has been and what he has done.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is VERY informational
I really enjoyed this book because it talks alot about his life. The book is a little gorey in the first few chapters but it really talks about Gary Paulsen's life. Some quotes that I thought that were meaningful were the parts where he talked about The Doe, I thought that part was interesting to me becuase it talked about life or death which was always a mystery to me.

Then she heard a gun shot and saw one of the rams fall dead, the poachers came up, got the ram's head and left not knowing they had been watched. She tried to call the sheriff on the C.B. raido. She didnt reach him, but instead heard a little boy crying for help. She went down stream to where boy had described. She found him and his little sister who had a borken leg from the fall. Then the poachers found them and were going to kill them, but she got out of the poacher's tent and messed up their gun and took their only four wheeler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing The Outside In
This book truly brings nature to your fingertips. As a reader, I felt as if I was out in the wild, experiencing everything of which Paulsen wrote. With the descriptive settings and easy-to-relate-to tales, Paulsen makes the reader feel as if they have entered the woods along with the characters in the story. The essays on fishing and hunting in the northern woods are definitely his best work yet! This book is easy to follow, yet has very deep and interesting accounts. 4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Father Water, Mother Woods
Paulsen writes about seasons in his hometown being determined by types of fish caught down by the dam, under the Ninth street bridge, or in frozen lakes, and not by dates on calendars. When fishing ends, hunting is the obsession for Paulsen and friends he calls "orphans of the woods."He explains, "When we were in the woods or fishing the rivers and lakes our lives didn't hurt."5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars HONORING THE CYCLE OF LIFE
Simply but movingly Gary Paulsen honors the cycle of life.Beginning with the earth, the seeds, and then the plants, he traces the making of flour and then bread.5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely story
I found this at our local library and it's one of my 3 year old son's favorite books.I've now bought a copy because he knew it by heart after we returned our library copy.I've read other Gary Paulsen books and have enjoyed them as well, but this simple story with it's beautiful illustrations is one of our family favorites. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The Winter Room
The Winter Room is about a boy, who lives with his family, on a farm and tells his story from his point of view. His family includes his mom, dad, brother,Wayne and his two uncles,Nels and David.Nels and David are not reallly his uncles, but thats just what they call them.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Gary Paulsen book
Can you tell me who had to survive on their farm during the winter? The only way you can find out is reading the book The Winter Room by Gary Paulsen. Well, it wasn't always like that for Wayne and his family. It was spring in Minnesota. Everything was good for Wayne who owns a farm with his family, but when it turned winter everything went wrong. Every winter Wayne is having trouble. He gets high fevers and coughs up blood. Wayne's little brother Eldon and Uncle Dan have to chop off the chicken's head in order to eat to eat for the winter, while his mother and father take care of Wayne. Then spring comes and Wayne gets mad at Uncle Dan. If you want to find out what happens read The Winter Room by Gary Paulsen. I think the author's message is to respect what you have and this is what Wayne learned because other people aren't as lucky as you. I give this book for the great book it is. Also it shows families working together.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Winter Room
The Winter Room is a very descriptive book about a family's life on the farm. Gary Paulsen does an excellent job describing the sights and smells of the farm. He describes everything so well it seems that you have been living with the family your whole life. I loved reading the story to find out about what life on a farm would be like. The characters are well developed and it tells about how family was more important than friends in those days more so than it is today. I would recommend this story for anyone interested in reading a fun family story about life on a farm with a truly magical ending. ... Read more

I thought that I could totally relate to this book because I am also his age and I thought it was awsome to compare each other. This book always kept you on the edge of what they would do next.It was a funny book and was a book with morals. If your the type that likes funny and true stories, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars school book review
I recommend this book to any one who likes extreme sports. This book is a page-turner because you always wonder what dumb thing they will do next. I didn't connect to the character because I'm not crazy. I enjoyed the genre and style of this writing because it was easy to follow. Almost every chapter ended with a cliffhanger. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to many people.

"This fourteenth summer started the same way and would have continued the same way except that in the first week after school was out he received a letter from his grandmother."5-0 out of 5 stars Alida's Song review by: Luke K/Mrs. Cox's Class
"Alida's Song" is written by Gary Paulsen and I believe it is a great book. The book is about a boy whose parents were alcoholics and his grandmother was the only one who cared about him. After his grandmother sent him a letter to come work with her at a farm, he learned a new meaning for his life. The story's setting transforms from the trashy city life to a little happy farm. Many things happen at this great farm and it changes this boys life. This story shows many different relationships that are emotional and fun to follow. The author's realistic descriptions in the story make me be able to image the scenes in my head. He describes the boy's surroundings very well to give the reader a good idea of how it affects the boy's social life. The author shows the character's funny and emotional sides to help the reader get a better understanding of the characters. The author also keeps the ending very hidden and gives almost no clues of how the book is really going to end, which makes the story more interesting. Along with the story the author gives some information about how life was in the early 1920's to give the reader a clear picture. My favorite part of this is at the end when it all comes together. I would recommend this book to other readers because this story was very interesting and adventurous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alida's Song
Although I am not much of a reader, Alida's Song, a book by Gary Paulsen, really caught my eye. Now I will tell you three reasons why this is the book for you. The first reason why you should read this book is it shows how a grandmother will do anything to help her grandson.. When she finds out her daughter and son-in-law are getting drunk and leaving their son hungry withno money, she brings him to the farm she works on to help out he learns a lot about his grandmother. There is also the compassion that he finds after he meets the Sirs' of the house. For example, as they are riding through the fields to get water from the well, he noticed few logs with beautiful faces while he is looking he notices one he said, "That is my grandma" Last, love is shared with his grandma and him. Every year there is a party thrown for Alida, and she can choose any man to dance with for her special song. She chooses her grandson because he turned out to be a special young man. Truly, Ihope this is a book that you will enjoy as much as I did. ... Read more

Have you ever been thrown into a river in a car when it is sinking? Well Daniel has in Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulson. Daniel is with some of the boys from his school. Although he does not like them, he still helps them on their adventure. If you want to find out if Daniel survives you will have to read the book Danger on Midnight River.
3-0 out of 5 stars Danger on Midnight River
Danger on Midnight River by Gary Paulsen is an adventure story. Daniel was a strong swimmer, but the swift-moving current was too much for him. It was all he could do to keep his head above the surging waves. A couple of times he thought he heard someone yelling. But for now he had his own problemes. The river was freezing cold and it offered no way out ... Read more

My fourth grader checked this out of the school library and we are reading it together. The stories are smart and engaging and each one gives us something to think and talk about afterwards. We especially loved "Follow the Water" by Jennifer L. Holm - emotionally complex and heartbreaking, we'll be talking about this one for awhile. Great book, great cause. We're buying our own copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great book!!
I am a big fan of Gary Paulsen. Some of his books like Dogsong, Hatchet,(WHICH I THINK EVERONE HAS READ) Woodsong, and Christmas Sonata. The pictuers in the book are different. He writes about living in the Philippines. One thing that he talked abouut is that there was a war going on and he callled it "war time". He lived in the Philippines because his dad was in the war over there. I was very glad that I read this book and I hope you will read it too.

Editorial Review

Fourteen-year-old Cody Pierce, a.k.a. the White Fox, is on a mission. After 18 months in the evil CCR (Confederation of Consolidated Republics) prisoncamp, Cody makes an ingenious escape and embarks on a plan to carry out hisrevenge and liberate the children remaining in the camp. The year is 2057, andthe USA has been overcome by the brutal tactics of the CCR. But pockets ofAmericans are building up their strength (and arsenals of weapons), waiting fortheir chance to fight back. With the White Fox's brilliant, ethical (except whenit comes to settling certain scores with CCR's particularly heinous leaders),military mind, the downtrodden Americans may just have a chance.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Escape, return, destroy
The book that I read was The White Fox Chronicles written by Gary Paulsen. This book s about a 14 year old boy named John that got caught by the CCR (a government that is taking over the United States that is very cruel) and got sent to a big prison camp where he stays for four years. He finally plans to escape with his friend Jason. They did get outside the gates but that's when Jason got shot and died but John kept running and he got away. Now he has joined with the Americans that are left to destroy the CCR. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action books that you can't put down.I liked this book because I like action books and I really like Gary Paulsen's style of writing. The only part of this book that I disliked was the beginning because it started really slow.
