Criss Cross
Criss Cross by Lenna Rae Perkins is a Newbery Award winnig book. i think that I really liked this book because it had a lot to do with friends and since i'm a social person then it was the right book for me. I rated this book a our because it had very good details as i was expexting from the author. i would recommened that you read this book if you're really patient with waiting on for the climax of the story to happen. it ahs a lot of great personalities mixed in with the characters. i thik that they all formed together to make the book really interesting. my favorite character of the book would have to be Jenny. Ithink that she was the best character out of all of the characters in the book. so if you have the patience to read a book and you're not worried about getting to the end, then i think that you'll havegood time with it. Good BUT Pointless
Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins is the story of kids who travel down different paths in life while growing up. Debbie wishes something would happen. Hector tries new things. Lenny, Phil, and Patty kind of feel the same. It talks about people coming and going, crushes and such between the younger crowd. Some parts are boring. Others are confusing. Some parts are interesting and you'll want to know what happens next. But the book just keeps going on about these friends - which is pointless. I recommend reading it, however.

A disappointment
Perhaps it's just me, but I read a lot of books, both for young readers and adults, and I have had a very difficult time getting into this book.The writing seems forced, rather than lyrical. And I can certainly see why young readers would feel distanced from the main characters.I will keep trying but so far this is a disappointment, especially for a Newbery award. ... Read more

My 2 year old loved this book
My 2 year old daughter loves this book. She loves the flip up pages and feeling the different textures. She tends to be pretty rough on books and this one is holding up great.

It is okay, but examples aren't perfect
I have a 2.5 year old son, and I ended up changing the wording to the story when I read it to him.I was a little disappointed by the examples that were used to teach manners, because my child didn't catch on as to why, for example, he would say "no thank you" when asked if he wanted peas for breakfast.My son would be willing to eat peas for breakfast!
big step down in physical quality
our 20 month old daughter LOVES the Karen Katz "lift the flap" books, and this one was no exception, EXCEPT that this book is physically cheaper quality and less robust - after only about 2 weeks, this one was pretty much destroyed. This is such a good book!
I loved reading freak the mighty. I got quite attached to the characters, especially kevin. you all can have your own opinion but i think you should give this book a chance. "boring" is the very LAST word in the world i would use to describe this book. EVERYONE in my class loved it.

Great book for toddlers
I read this book to my toddler when he started hitting and then reinforcing it by saying hands are not for hitting when ever he would hit.It really worked - he loved doing some of the fun things that hands are good for as we read along.I liked it that it focused on positive things to do with your hands while still enforcing that hitting is not what hands are for.Great book!

Really Bad
I have got to say that is is one of the worst books I have ever read. I picked it to read off a summer reading list when i was 10 just because i liked the title. All it is, is a girl tries to save her brother when everyone is leaving their island, and they get left behiend. Spoiler ahead.

I've always loved this movie; I guess the main reason is, I'm a big lover of dogs and when I first viewed Island of the Blue Dolphins, it was the dog (in it)which grabbed my interest. Maybe he reminded me of Walt Disney's Old Yeller; guitly as charged. Loved that mutt, too. At any rate..

Goodnight Moon in Spanish
As an NY born of Dominican decent, I love reading this book to my little one.My 20 month old daughter loves this book. We have both the English and Spanish versions of the book.Often times she brings her Dad or me both books to read to her.We start with one gets tired of it mid-way and then she wants us to pick up where we left off in the other language.It doesn't really matter to her which language we start/end with.We change it up all the time.I agree with some other reviewers that the translation is not exact, but the flow is very good with the changes that were made.I especially like "la viejecita que teje muy calladita" instead of "a quiet old lady who was whispering 'hush'," especially since I knit and my daughter can relate to that.Because of this book she has begun to comfortably alternate luna/moon and star/estrella.I think it's really important for my little girl to learn both Spanish and, obviously, English and this book makes it that much easier to accomplish.

Our family does not speak Spanish.However my son is currently taking Spanish 5 in high school.He believes learning a foreign language is important and wants to teach his new niece.He is looking forward to reading it to her!

The A-list, the guiltiest of guilty pleasures!!
I have read the A-list from the beginning and there is one main reason why it became one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Two Words: Sam Sharpe. This is my favorite character, I just love they way she developed, her approach to things, her cynicism that hides a very emotionally troubled young woman. She is the less cliched of all the four main characters (Anna...classy, prim and proper Hampton girl, yawn..., Cammie the uberbitch always on the verge of redeeming herself and Dee the real LosAngelino character, with all her ingenuity, incense sticks and sojourns in the loony bin). These stories, developments and characters are totally unreal, but hey people, this is FICTION! And meant to be FUN! The characters won't cover their heads in ashes, donate their money to the poor and join Mother Teresa's nuns...It is so exaggerated that it is fascinating for a European like yours truly...
why is it dragging on and on and on?
i wonder if im reading the same book the others are reading. i'm on page 101 right now and it took me about 4 days to get this far. (i've gone through 3 clique books in a day, so it's not like i'm a slow reader) the book is just so boring. its like ive read all of this cr@p before! so far sam had a graduation party at her dad's yacht, we hear about 2 new characters from a rival school who happen to be enemies of sam and her group and conveniently enough the two schools do something together, i forget what but it looks like it will be the opportunity for sam to get her revenge for getting poop smeared on her white jeans a few years back (eye-roll). anna is incapable of taking care of herself at a time of crisis (her car gets rear ended by some cliche white trash woman) so her dad's 'dont judge a book by the cover cliche' tatooed but hot new intern comes to rescue her, omg romance! (another eye roll) ben is being a troll my guess is hes cheating on her, but seriously reading that chapter where they go on this really uncomfortable date just made me want to scream at the book! it was so annoying.

Book for kids that parents will love too
This is one of the best pre-k early reader books ever!What makes this a great book is it has humor that mom and dad can appreciate too, which is great since they'll be reading it over and over again!The art and vocabulary are simple but very effective in communicating the emotions of our hero the pigeon.This is a must have in every child's library.

BEST PreK-Grade2 book series EVER!!!
It was love at first sight. After finding Mo Willems' "Don't Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus," my son was hooked. He couldn't wait to read it by himself.

Queen of the Scene Book and CD
I really did enjoy the book a lot.This was a book was a page turner for me to read. I have always support any thing that Queen Latifah does. She has a postive attitude.She always show young women and girls that they can do any thing if they set there mind to it. I have nothing but love for Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah keep up the good work that you are doing to help young women and girls know that nothing is impossible.

Why do celebrities write children's books?
Honest to god, this is one of the worst celebrity-written kids' books I've seen (possibly second only to Billy Crystal's saccharine tripe).Being a songwriter, you'd think Queen Latifah would actually know how to write verse... but she can't.Her rhymes have no real meter or structure, and half the time they don't even make sense (and not in a good Dr. Seuss way).The illustrations aren't that bad, but good lord, it's a shame that famous people can get crap like this published based solely on their fame. ... PRETTIES
This book is just as exceptional as its predecessor, with thought-stirring ideas and perfectly placed plot twists to keep you reading until the last page is done. Now that Tally Youngblood is a pretty, she is living the high life with an avalanche of parties to attend; the hardest decision on her mind is what to wear to a costume party. Then a mysteriously familiar person gives her directions to a pouch containing something seemingly important. It takes all the wit her fuzzily pretty mind can manage to get it. When she does, she finds a letter written to herself from back when she was ugly. Along with it, she finds the cure described to her while with Maddy and David. In a last second decision, she and her newly-found boyfriend Zane split the pills. They both seem pretty much clear minded, even when Zane gets some headaches every few mornings. But when they escape to the New Smoke, Tally learns that something went terribly wrong. Another must-read with a cliff-hanger ending. Left me waiting in suspence for the final part in the trilogy.

Pretties School Review
When a random boy comes up to Tally Youngblood and hands her a note, she thinks that he is crazy. Tally Youngblood is your average pretty, going to parties, getting drunk, and not thinking more ahead than the next form of entertainment. See, in Tally's town when you turn sixteen you receive an operation that turns you from an ugly(normal person) to a mindless pretty. While Tally was still an Ugly, she was at a rebel camp called New Smoke that had figured out the operation ad was trying to spread the word about brain lesions you develop after the pretty cosmetic surgery. Tally volunteered herself to try the pills that the New Smoke made to see if they got rid of the lesions, but after she became pretty, she forgot everything about her life as an ugly and the pills. So whenthe random boy comes up to Tally and gives her the note she wrote giving permission to take the pills, she is bewildered. With her boyfriend Zane, she goes to take the pills, but splits them with him so that they each get one. Slowly things start to become clearer and clearer to them, but Zane starts getting huge headaches and Special Circumstances Doctor Cable is on their trail to find out about the pills. Suddenly Shay, Tally's best friend, stops talking to Tally and is found cutting herself on the arm with a group of friends. When Zane's headaches get so bad that he can barely get out of bed, Tally plans a hot air balloon escape to find the New Smoke to cure him. When they reach the New Smoke doctor, she says that Zane took the pill that eats away the lesions and your brain, and Tally took the pill that gets rid of the things that eat away the lesions, so Zane has had things eating away at his brain for a month or two, and Tally has had nothing happen to her brain. On their way back, their hot air balloon is overtaken by Special Circumstances hoverboards flown by the Cutters, a new brand of Specials led by none other than Shay, who takes Tally to Doctor Cable where she too becomes a Cutter. This is a swift and exiting read that has a predictable but exiting plot and a futuristic setting.

Note on version
I order this book as it is listed as coming with a CD.However when the book arrived it was the version without the CD.I called and was told the wrong book was sent in error and the correct book was will be shipped out.When that book arrive it was the same version that was sent originally, without the CD.Again a call to Amazon to ask about the book and the wrong version, they then informed me that they no longer have the CD version.
Better than the First Book
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I read the first novel with a little disappointment because I found it a bit perdictable, but this 2nd book in the series was a true delight.

Buy this book for your pre-teen!
My 9 and 12 year old sons love this book!We have been able to talk about those angery moments in a fun and useful way.The funny pictures just add to the easy-going approch to a serious topic.

Good for families who are adopting
My husband and I are adopting a baby boy. I have been trying to find a 'Big Sister' book for our daughter, but so many of them are about mom being pregnant and giving birth to the new sibling. Thisbook is the only one I have seen that is suitable for both situations (adoption or giving birth). The story itself is simple, but very sweet and reassuring for the older child. My daughter absolutely loves it.

Favorite of 2-yr-old big sister
Our daughter was given this book a few months before her baby sister arrived.She liked it alot pre-sis and still requests it now that li'l sis is here. Upon receiving it, I didn't think much of it (not a "cool", super-aesthetically pleasing cover), but my daughter really liked it.The book always refers to "our baby" so that it works expecting boy or girl.I really appreciated the intro to what baby will be like - my daughter thus was able to enthusiastically spout some facts (slightly altered/added by us) about baby before she arrived - "Baby cry alot.Baby poop alot.Baby sleep in crib."As for the book baby being bottle-fed, I just told our daughter that our baby would nurse (fortunately we had friends that were nursing so she could see what it was versus me explaining it ;). Overall - I'm ordering the book for my sister-in-law who's expecting her second.

Way too mainstream.
My mother bought this book for my daughter, and I absolutely detested in.My daughter was confused as well, as to why everything was "wrong," especially with the bottlefeeding.I know most women give up quickly on breastfeeding, but couldn't the author even pretend that some women breastfeed?And of course the baby is always in a stroller or bouncy seat, sleeps in a crib, etc.

I Feel Like I Like This Book!
This is our second encounter with Jamie Lee Curtis as an author and like the first (Where do Balloons Go?) they loved it!In this book we join a little girl as she takes a whirlwind tour of 13 different emotions, each told in that same sing-song rhyme that appears to be a staple of Curtis' writing.The rhymes are brought to life with the same riot of color illustrations that really seem to appeal to young readers!The kids especially liked how the colors used changed with the moods while maintaining their vivid shades (there is nothing gloomy or lackluster about this book).At the very end, there is a large picture of the girl in the story with a set of wheels that the kids can turn to see a selection of moods which was quite humorous and led to much discussion between the kids about how they were feeling right then and what types of things that have happened before made them feel angry or silly...or whatever...so it was a light, fun read, but also a good way to get more in depth discussion of moods, how they just happen sometimes and what types of activities/events make you feel certain ways...you know...like what makes you angry or sad...what makes you happy or what do you do when you just feeling silly or blue?I think Today I Feel Silly is best as a read aloud book...and the larger the group of kids you're reading to the more interesting the conversation after can get!I'd recommend this in a heart beat! We loved it!

Great book for boys and girls
This book teaches a wonderful lesson about moods and how they vary every day.You can tell its written by an actress, who likely has more dramatic moods than you and I, but the message is wonderful.I love reading this book to my six-month-old son.

A Fight for Freedom
This book has a very powerful message to it.This made me think about all the things that I take for granted.With Amari beingfifteen, I can relate to her.Usually you can not find books like this now a days. This book makes me think more about how lucky I am and how there are kids in the world that aren't as fortunate as I am.Sharon knows how to grab the readers attention. My friends and I are not big readers and we thought this book was good, and it is one of the very few books that we can stand to read.Drapers knows how to catch your wondering eye because whenIsaw this book on the amazon website I wanted to read it and I was not really interested in reading any other books.
VEEEEEEEEEEERY Good!
Copper Sun was an exceptional book.I completely fell in love with it.The characters were well developed, the plot wasn't very predictable, and it gave me a sense of awe and wonder when I finished it. The book is under the genre of historical fiction and is about a 15 year old slave girl who was captured and sold into slavery from her native home in Africa.However, this isn't your typical fly-away-to-freedom slavery book.Amari, the maincharacter, was raped and brutally beaten before she escaped to freedom with her white friend and a young boy.Sharon Draper offers two perspectives-that of Amari and of her white comrad Polly.Ironically instead of escaping to the North, they escape to the South where a non-discriminatory fort exists.There all are free and equal which is extremely uncommon during the year 1738.I won't tell anymore-you have to read it for yourself!

Toching Spirit Bear, and Me
Cole has many problems. His dad beats him, his mom says nothing about it, so his anger towards his parents is taken out on the world, and specifically at a schoolmate, Peter. Peter tells on Cole, so Cole smashes his head into the sidewalk, causing severe damage both emotional and physical. When Cole is put into a detention center, Garvey, a man working at the detention center, tells Cole about a Tlingit Indian justice ritual called Circle Justice. Cole will do anything to get of prison. He agrees to his terms and is sentenced to a year of banishment on an island off the coast of Alaska. There he encounters a Spirit Bear. After almost being killed by it, Cole is left thinking about his life, his choices, and the healing ramifications of Circle Justice.

I'm in sixth grade and this was the best book I have ever read. I read it twice over the summer and I am getting readey to read it again for my book report. Thls book is on my sixth grade reading list and I have recomended et to all of my friends and all of them are reading it.This book also teaches everyone a great lesson. Use your judgement, and pick and choose
As a new elementary guidance counselor, I haven't found a kids' book on divorce yet that I LOVE. Meanwhile, this is useful. It covers several aspects of divorce. It is too long to use the whole thing in one sitting with young children, and not all of it applies in every situation or is appropriate with every age group. However, it's fairly easy to select what you think is helpful and appropriate for your child(ren) because of the comic-book forma
