4-0 out of 5 stars A well earned Caldecott
Puss in boots is always an enjoyable tale, probably because it is so based on wit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Zee puss in zee boots
It shouldn't surprise anyone that the stock of "Puss In Boots" went up when "Shrek 2" came out in theaters.Suddenly that little cat with the fancy footwear was garnering a lot more interest than he ever had before.I've always wondered why this fairy tale was ignored by the Disney animation studios in their heyday. Now if you're looking for the quintessential version of the tale, there are really only two illustrators to pick between. You can either choose the multi-talented Fred Marcellino version (responsible for some of my favorite picture books like, "I, Crocodile" and "The Story of Little Babaji") or you can go the Paul Galdone route.I personally have always found Galdone to be a bit of a bore, except in the cat department. For some reason, Galdone was always particularly good at drawing amusing felines.I'm not entirely certain why Amazon.com has decided to link these two titles with one set of reviews, but just to clear everything up I'd like to state that for all its charms I'm eschewing the Paul Galdone version of "Puss" and instead reviewing the Marcellino version in its stead.May God have mercy on my soul.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Review of the Paul Galdone's "Puss In Boots"
I am going to start this review by pointing out that most, if not all, of the reviews on this page are NOT for the "Paul Galdone" version of "Puss In Boots. In fact, these same reviews appear on the pages for the "Fred Marcellino" illustrated version.

5-0 out of 5 stars The sad ending for Riding Hood is dramatic and revealing
Fans of artistic photo books for kids will find this an intriguing contemporary treatment of the Red Riding Hood classic. Here a little country girl faces urban and rural threats on her way to grandmother's house, only to find her grandmother has been replaced by an evil wolf. The sad ending for Riding Hood is dramatic and revealing, providing a realistic twist on the fairy tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little Red Riding Hood by Perrault, illus. by Sarah Moon
I enjoyed the story as Perrault wrote it, not as yet another alternate version with yet another happy ending.Red Riding Hood, also available in French as Le Petit Rouge, contains marvelous photos by Sarah Moon which lend an eerie, appropriately menacing mood to an already dark tale.It should be said, however, that this book is unsettling and is undoubtedly not one to share with your child as a bedtime story. ... Editorial Review

In this kinder, gentler version of the old French fairy tale, the poor cinderwench forgives her stepsisters in the end and gives them a home in her palace. This Cinderella is pretty, but not perfect, and instead of having the tiniest feet in the kingdom, she in fact has wide feet (which fit the glass slipper nonetheless). From the details of the ball gowns to the trees of jewels glittering at the palace, Susan Jeffers's glowing, imaginative artwork is breathtaking. Jeffers has illustrated many fairy tales, as well as the popular McDuff books. With pen and ink and brilliant colors, she creates paintings of exquisite detail and clarity, wonderfully showcased by this book's large format and abundant full-page illustrations. The magical transformation of Cinderella into a beautiful princess never fails to capture the imagination of young ones, and this lovely edition is sure to be a hit. Read more

There are parents in the world for whom nothing but the definitive edition of a book is good enough for their little ones.Fairy tales?Find them the quintessential edition of "The Three Little Pigs" or "Rapunzel" and they are pleased.Ordinarily this is a bit of a task.I mean, what truly makes one version of a story any better than another if they are vastly different in composition and interpretation?Which brings me to that 1955 Caldecott award winning little number, "Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper".Retold and illustrated by that deity amongst children's authors, Marcia Brown, the book is a most perfect retelling of the classic Cinderella story. It's not the gory Grimm Brothers version (no eyes are pecked out nor heels chopped off) nor the hokey Disney concoction. It is instead it's own sweet little creation, perfectly preserved within itself.Written in the 1950s it simply tells a tale that it would be a good idea to know if you're going to operate fully in society.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella Cari Brown Jr.
Cinderella had brown slippers. She was a commoner, she was poor, andwore the traditional dark brown smock, then, when she became famous, that brown smock became legendary, not that brown clothes were God like, but they were Cinderella's, the most ordinary brown smock, she had dark brown hair, and brown eyes, she had a brown broom, everything about her was brown, and common. She was kind to a fault, she had a brown car, she had a brown golf bag, she was on welfare and smoked cigarettes, she knew only a few, and only a few remember her, she worked for Michelle Pfeifer, Mariah Carey, and Deborah Gibson, who were singers, her foot was the most perfect thingI have ever seen. It was not to small, and it was not to big, it didnt look like a mans foot, and it wasnt dainty like a womans, it belonged to a person, if she was a woman her purse would have been dirty and brown, but it was her purse, even the name Cinderella, belonged to her, it was her and she owned it, she belonged to herself, since Cinderella had no last name I have her the name Brown, I could not use Tramane because she was a stepchild, she was the first to wear dark brown, everything on her was dark brown, her sneakers, her levi cords, her t-shirt. Her hat, her bicycle, maybe that's how shell be remembered, oh that girl who wore brown, how cute, she was poor and no one liked her or knew her, she died a commoner and everyone forgot, except for her-Cinderella(Cinderelli) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh perspective on an old tale.
Sweet telling of the old story. The illustrations are the recommending factor here.I personally was touched by this version because it is the only Cinderella I have seen portrayed with dark hair.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique and Compelling Cinderella
If you are a Cinderella fan, this book, illustrated by Roberto Innocenti, is a must.I have read countless versions of Cinderella and looked at numerous illustrations.I have never seen the story treated like this.Innocenti sets Cinderella in the 1920s with flapper clothes and cars (instead of a pumpkin carriage).Never fear, a glass slipper is still here.I am usually tired of Cinderella books, to be honest, but this one kept me turning pages to see what was going to happen.I have become selective in my Cinderella purchases, but I had to own this one.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I was hoping for - EITHER
Although the story has some different twists & that was fun, it's the artwork that spurred me to write a review. What a total let down.In one case Cinderella even looks mean & ugly. What a catastrophy for a parent trying to explain that to a confused child. I think Debrah Santini is the illustrator. She really didn't do the book the justice it deserves.Another example, see the cover & notice the look of her face.I hate to put an artist down, but the word disaster comes to mind.Try to explain to you children that they should look at the beautiful drawings and not at anyone's face, yipes!Run away from this one at any price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I was hoping for
My daughter loves the story of Cinderella, so when we found this at the library, I got it for her. We were both disappointed. It's not at all what I wanted. Cinderella is in a slightly different setting, but the story is very traditional. The only difference is that she appears to live in a 19th century city. I don't mind that. But the illustrations are completely unmagical. Cinderella scarcely looks different from anyone else in the book. I really couldn't tell which one she was in some pictures. What a let down. Find another version and don't bother with this one. ... Read more

My two daughters, ages 2 and 4, love to go to sleep to this CD.It tops their choices approximatley 2 out of 3 nights.I think it isn't as quick and easy/short as his classic sleep music CDs, but great none the less.I recommend the CD over the cassette for the simple reason that you don't have to back to their room and turn it over if they stayed awake through the first story.5-0 out of 5 stars This was wonderful!
