What a superb book.Well written and poignant.I'll be looking for more from Marjorie Parker!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 hankie book
If you are a dog lover, I recommend you buy this book. I also recommend you read it in private so you can cry in peace. It is a beautifully written account of the last day of a Golden Retriever who's family is giving him one special day before he must take one last trip to the vet. Written from the perspective of Jasper's "boy", it is heart warming and realistic in dealing with the pain of losing a beloved dog.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad and true. A good one for helping to heal grief.
This picture book presents the life and death of a family pet truthfully, responsibly, and in a manner that its intended audience can understand.1-0 out of 5 stars Viewer Discretion Advised
My son cried several times over the week following our reading this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Touching story of love and loss
...Anyone who has lost a pet, especially one as dedicated as a dog like Jack, will be moved and comforted by this tender and sad story. For many young children, the loss of a pet is their first exposure to death and grieving, so stories about what they’re going through are a helpful way of healing into that loss.Jack’s family has a ceremony when they bury his ashes and they always try to remember the good things about Jack. They allow themselves to feel what they feel, whether it be sadness or happy memories about times past. They may go on and get another dog sometime, but for right now, they’re not ready.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Easy-to-Understand Book About Death
One morning, a young boy wakes up to find his beloved pet mouse, known as Mousie, asleep. No matter what the little boy does, Mousie just won't wake up. His Father informs him that young Mousie has died. The young boy doesn't want to believe his Father. After all, little Mousie was fine the day before, and he was a very happy mouse. The boy is soon overcome with anger that Mousie has left him without any warning, and feels very sad. But after talking about the good times he shared with Mousie, and creating a special box for Mousie's burial that is filled with all kinds of goodies for Mousie to enjoy once he gets to mouse-heaven, the boy begins to feel a lot better about the loss of his beloved Mousie.
5-0 out of 5 stars realistically written and beautifully illustrated
I checked this book out at the library not knowing the subject. The cover shows a small boy playing with his mouse, but the first page starts out with the boy waking up to find his mouse "asleep". Written in the first person (of the boy), this book is sensitive and realistic in how a parent might help a young child deal with the death of a pet. It relates the father's tenderness in talking with his son, who goes through the range of emotions, including denial, sadness and anger. The boy appears to be of the preschool age, and while he seems to understand the finality of death, he also wants his mousie friend to be warm, well fed, and entertained after they bury him. The words are comforting to read and the illustrations are simple and beautifully done. 5-0 out of 5 stars What a magnificent way to teach children about loss!
I work as a therapist, and I think this is a great book to help to "normalize" (as much as possible) the process of losing a pet.I think this book can also serve as a springboard for children and parents to talk openly about loss.Robie Harris' book is a hit! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars TheBest Cat
I like this book because its about a cat. It's a cat named Desser. I think that the book is a litle sad.But in the time it gets way beter.I think other kids should read this book too.I like books like this because they always have happy endings.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST EVER CHILDREN'S BOOK!
This is my most favorite children's book, hands down! It's sweet, humorous, touching and sad --all in one--and the pictures are so beautiful and expressive. We originally borrowed it from the library and as I read it by myself (because I couldn't stop looking at the beautiful pictures) and cried my eyes out remembering all 3 of my dear kitties that have passed on, I knew I had to have my own copy.My four year old daughter loves it as much as I do... and I know she sees our current cat through different eyes now!

5-0 out of 5 stars animal love
If you love this book, then let me suggest the book, "Florence the Goose: A True Story For Children of All Ages." They both share "true stories," animals who change the lives of the narrators immeasurably, a sublimly painful detailing of loss and exquisite artwork! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A genuine story
Ernie comes upon another money making sceme. With the help of Dusty, someone to decorate the "coffins", Tony, the hole digger, and Swimming Pool, a tomboy who can cry on cue, they start a great business for pet funerals. This story is full of exitement and suspense when some things go wrong for the team of four.A great book....I have read it a lot!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm 42 and I Loved It!
My daughter has a list of books to read for a type of competition in her school.I order them for her at the library and she reads them.Every once in awhile I pick one up and read it to be sure they have decent content, etc. This one just looked good to me from reading the back cover and also the illustration.I read it and laughed and laughed. It was very enjoyable. It had serious moments in the book that helped round out what was happening in the story. It was well written.I would have to say that the author, although writing this for children, put in things that adults would chuckle over and enjoy; things you would understand if you watch old black and white movies. It's so enjoyable that I ordered a copy for our family to own.We have 8 children and I think all of them will enjoy this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Beloved Dearly
The Beloved Dearly is about 4 kids that start funerals for pets.Pet owners give them money and their dead pet for a funeral. The best part about this book is that one of the kid's names is Swimming Pool and she is very emotional during the funerals. This story is very humorous and is great to read.It will make you laugh. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle way to discuss loss with your child
Every child will experience loss eventually, be it the loss of a beloved pet or the loss of a relative. This book will help a child cope with the subject of death. We received this book as a gift, and what a gift it is.I read it to my daughters and they are enchanted and inspired by the sweet story of Mog mentoring the new kitten and helping it learn to love his family. No one my daughters know has died, but you never know when tragedy will strike. When someone in our family, or one of our pets, passes, they will know a little something about this very natural process and part of life.We cannot protect our children from loss, so let us prepare them with this loving story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely sentiment for kids and adults of all ages
This sweet book reminds us all of angels in our lives. The pets used in this book so beautifully reminded me of not only how healing our own dogs have been to my family, but also how healing friends and family can be too. The book is great all around for reminding us to all cherish those angels in our lives, no matter what form they come in. This book is touching, sweet and poignant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids...
The True Story of Critter Angels by Yani is one of those wonderful books that crossover between childhood and adulthood. The experience of loss is universal, and Shendl Diamond's sensitive text and delightful illustrations easily elicit strong feelings in adults as well.I lent my copy to a 60 year old friend who has been a pet lover her whole life and she was soon crying, with a beautiful smile on her face at the same time, saying "This is so wonderful!" The book is appropriate whether or not the reader has a religious background, as the idea of "angels" provides a powerful metaphor independent of any particular belief system.I know this is a book I will be giving again and again, knowing it will be able to work it's magic, honoring pet loss and comforting the griever.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have for parents and children dealing with pet loss
I received this book as a gift for Christmas in 2005. The book is beautifully written from the pets perspective. Near the end of the book there are spaces for you to place photos of your own "Critter Angels".A nice touch to help us remember our pets when they do pass away.My oldest cat Pearl is almost 15 and she will probably not be with us much longer. When Pearl does pass away I know that this book will help my children and myself deal with the loss of a pet who has been a part of our lives for so many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sadie Listens
This is a book not only for children but for adults too. So much is said in so few words. The illustrations are key to the message. With so much going on today and so much of our pain and feelings kept inside, this book helps up to own our feelings without having to fix them.5-0 out of 5 stars Abook for all ages and all times!
The words of E. McMahon and P. Campbell about "Sadie Listens" from the Foreword to the book summarize the essence of the book for me.They wrote:"Steele's ingenious little classic provides a unique glimpse into that moment of transformation when body-connections are made and inner worldsunfold"And they conclude this paragraph with "The outer conflict we experience and the social disorder so prevalent in our world today, stem directly from this state of inner disconnection."5-0 out of 5 stars It's not about feelings; it's about feeling feelings & more
"Sadie Listens" accomplishes a complex task in a profoundly simple story. It is easy to talk "about" feelings. It's easy to say "I'm sad" or "I'm mad" but it is very difficult to focus inside and just "feel" feelings--especially the scary ones.Working with children who are grieving, this is one of our tasks; so I am always looking for ways to help the children move from just talking about their feelings to actually feeling and listening. The first time I read the book to a group of bereaved children, it was obvious that they "got it." ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Warning to Parents!!!!
This book should be printed with a large warning to parents on the front cover. This book deals with the death of 2 dogs (how they both die at the same time seems strange). This was very upsetting to my 7 year old son when it was read to him.It is hard enough for a child to deal with the death of a pet, but to hear it in a book usually read at bedtime is not something a child should go through. The author should be ashamed for writing a children's book like this.Libraries should not place this book in the children's section! For you children's sake, do not buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the worst children's book I've read
My three-year old brought this home from the library. Unfamiliar with the book or the author, I started reading it to my child at bedtime recently. What a mess! Many unpleasant aspects - dead dogs, implied suicide, roadkill, ghost pets, public school busing - and a writing style that aspires to art but merely annoys. Don't buy this and encourage the author to produce more like it. My advice is to spend your money on MISTER LUNCH TAKES A PLANE RIDE or Lobel's FABLES or, really, just about any other children's book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Positive Introduction to the Subject of Death
This book is a treasure in our home.It has helped enormously to explain death to my children. The book provides support for statements such as: the dead person's spirit can remain with you, you can look forward to powerful "visits" by the dead person's spririt, but the dead always stay dead since their body is gone, "just like the Angel Cat."When I told my four year old son that my 94 year old grandmother had passed away, he asked to read the Angel Cat that night.I even spoke of this book at her funeral!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching and beautiful affirmation of love and faith.
This book is a treasure for all ages. A child's love for his pet is perfectly matched with his faith in the kindness and beauty of things he cannot see. Matthew is positive his pet cat, Yin, has gone to heaven andbecome a winged angel. Is his faith rewarded? Read and see. Each pictureand each page is a visual and emotional treat for your whole family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous book
I read this for a book report at school, and I loved it!Silver dreams of getting a dog for her thirteenth birthday, because she has been lonely ever since her parents and baby sister died in a car accident. But her grandfather, who she now lives with, tells her that she'll get a dog over his dead body.I won't tell the end, but it has a good ending-so read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story loved the "power of love and faith" theme!
Great somewhat Christian book. Silver is like every 12 year old girl (i know being one myself)except without the makeup and boys outlook (yes finally!). All Silver wants is a dog I remember before I got one wanting one soooo bad!. Won't tell the end but loved it anyway!!!!!!
