5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur starts a pet business
A good lesson for all kids that eventually want a pet of some kind by teaching responsibility in owning a pet.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on responsibility
What child hasn't asked for a pet at some point in their childhood. What an excellent way to teach responsibility. This book shows the parent how to test a child's readiness for responsibilities, while showing the young readers the perils and pitfalls of having one's own pet business, as well as the rewards, and entertaining us all in the meanwhile. Well done. It'salso fun to look in all of Marc Brown's books and find the hidden names!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure
I just read this book to my 5 1/2 year old son and he loved it.The prose was challenging for him, but he managed to understand it surprisingly well. Some of the reviewers recommend this for older children, presumably because it is somewhat of a challenging read, but the content is certainly appropriate for younger children. It was a great read-aloud and I enthusiastically recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary through middle school readers will delight
Advanced elementary through middle school readers will delight in this story of a mouse who is anything but common. Christopher is born in a cage, has encounters in a museum Egyptian room with a dangerous cat, and proves an adventurer and poet alike in this tale of a mouse who must find his way in an exciting world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Level 2 readers are for kids reading independently
Level 2 readers are for kids reading independently and Henry And Mudge And The Big Sleepover provides another Henry and Mudge story with fine short chapters, varied sentence structure, and adventure. Here Henry is invited to a sleepover party and nighttime adventures seem to assure nobody will get to sleep, especially when a father decides to participate. Sucie Stevenson's drawings are fun embellishments.

4-0 out of 5 stars One wascaly wabbit
The sweetest little South Korean import on the market today.Admittedly, I'm not particularly familiar with a lot of translated South Korean books for children sold in America. But due to the fact that, "While We Were Out", (originally titled in South Korea, "What On Earth Happened During That Time") is twice as adorable as 95% of picture books written in the English language, it's probably a fair guess.5-0 out of 5 stars A sweet story about a little rabbit
Children's books about animals are one of my favorites to review -- especially when the main character has a mind of his own :).5-0 out of 5 stars A Story That Makes Them Giggle
This book is just right for my five-year-old bunny loving daughter. It's a simple story of what the pet bunny does when the family leaves, and he sneaks into the house. It's a little reminiscent of Alexandra Day's Carl books, in that when the pet is left alone, he takes on some human characteristics. For instance, this bunny has lunch at the table and tries out roller skating.Very cute- just the right amount of text, a great cuddle up and giggle story. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the WholeFamily
As usual in this cheerful series, Henry and his big dog Mudge arefeatured in three related stories, this time about a family reunion. They receive a letter labeled "invitation."
5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book for kids and parents alike
Stumbling upon the Henry and Mudge books was like stumbling upon a gold mine.My first grader and my preschooler absolutely love these books. This one is my personal favorite but every one of these adventures iswonderful. Rylant uses simple words so beautifully. I can't think of abetter way for us to help our children learn to love reading than by givingthem books that tell great stories in such well-written fashion.Althoughthe stories are about a boy and his dog, they appeal to my daughters, neither of whom even like dogs (or boys, for that matter). Six andseven-year olds should be able to read them for themselves, and youngerchildren will love to hear them read over and over. If you're looking for agreat series of books for 4-7 year olds, check out all of the books in thisseries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nature in a Nutshell -- good for kids, parents, teachers, camp counselors
The book is full of short activities that answer some natural questions that youth often ask. The activities tell information with wonderful graphic sense.Good for scout leaders, teachers, home school parents, camp counselors and outdoors families.Preparation and materials may take ten minutes to gather.Reading the activity can use up five to ten minutes.Yet, with such a wide variety of activities, each tuned to a particular season of the year, there are lots of options to do or not do.Very pleased with the thoughtful and "hands on" aspects of these activities. A motivated reading student can do most of them with out supervision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Kids Book!
My kids are always looking for something interesting to do, so when I saw this book on line. I decided to get it with the hopes that it would keep my kids out of trouble while teaching them! THIE BOOK SURPASSES all of my expectations. I have copied one activity per week and let them go outside and explore. They have learned so much! The one activity that they really liked was the sanil one. They studied the snail for hours! Then my youngest one was thrilled with being able to identify the sounds of different birds...that lead us on a further exploration of birds. I higghly recommend the book....and did so to our school. They now have three copies that are dog eared! The kids love the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun from beginning to end
Sure, the plot is silly. What do you expect when the premise is that a tadpole caught in Loch Ness turns out to be more than Uncle McAllister bargained for? The Mysterious Tadpole is a rollicking romp, rich in absurdity (Only after Alphonse grows four legs and reaches the size of a Volkswagen does the teacher conclude that he's not an ordinary tadpole.), and chock full of Steven Kellog's usual hilarious illustrations. Grab the nearest child, curl up in a big chair, and enjoy The Mysterious Tadpole.

4-0 out of 5 stars If it ain't broke
I loved this book as a child and have loved reading it to my son. He received the 25th Anniversary edition for Christmas and while it's very, very good, it has been rewritten and simply lacks the charm of the original (which I would rate an enthusiastic 5 stars). The story is still wonderful and if this is the only copy you have access to, you won't be disappointed. The original, though, is the best and that's why I have to give this edition 4-stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, i found the name of the book!
This was one of my favorite stories as a kid, but i forgot the name. i asked every kindergarden teacher i could find if they knew the book about the kid who gets a baby loch ness monster from his uncle and no one had any idea what i was talking about. I'm so happy i found it here because now i can get it for my son to enjoy. This is such a cute story! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Max, the King of Chagrin Falls
I just met the author and the illustrator of this book at a local bookstore.Annie, Max's sister was also there, but Max was too dirty to come. The book is well written, and the illustrations are enjoyable.I read this book to a 3rd-grade class today (I'm a substitute teacher), andthey enjoyed it.They laughed at several points, especially when Maxrolled in fresh horse poop.I recommend it for 2nd grade through 5thgrade.This book is a self-published book, but that does not mean that itis lacking in quality.Sandra Phillipson (the author) chose theself-publishing route mainly because she wanted Robert Takatch (theillustrator) to illustrate it, and she was afraid if she went through apublisher, she would lose that option. He knows these dogs and has done anice job of conveying their personalities through his artwork.I tried togive this book 4 and a half stars instead of 4.

They asked the cats which one is the prettiest and the cats all fight with each other. At the end of the fight ,there is only one kitten alive. This kitten had said nothing about being pretty and was not in the fight. So, the man and woman kept the little kitten.

Editorial Review

Despite the theme of witches and creepy critters, this is a veryuncreepy, sweet, and unthreatening picture book suitable for children justgetting into things spooky. Mitzi is a right little witch. She lives in a sortof permanent Halloween, surrounded by cobwebs and dubious-looking aunts inpointy hats. She wants a pet--a really, really creepy pet, please--but, despiterepeated broomstick-flights to Cackle & Co. pet store, she just can't get onethat satisfies. Finally a kitten named Hoodwink shows up at the door, is almostturned away on account of being horribly cuddly and nice... and turns out to bejust perfect. Arthur Howard has won awards for his previous books Read more
