5-0 out of 5 stars We love Mudge!
In this book Henry and his big dog, Mudge, enjoy the escapades of fall. They shake together as Henry's mom tells scary Halloween stories and together they endure the Thanksgiving visit from Aunt Sally. These booksare a favorite for my reluctant reader. The love between Henry and his dogMudge is heart-warming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Old Favorite
I love this one! Poor Harry doesn't like the roses on his new sweater from Grandma. He keeps trying (and failing) to "lose" it, and becomes depressed. His mood is saved by a bird that swoops in to unravel the sweater for a nest - and Grandma sends Harry a new, better sweater in the end, so everyone winds up happy. Great muted colors and "retro"-style illustrations, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging reading
My 4 year old daughter loves reading this book by herself; she just can not get enough. It is a lovely companion book to Harry and the Lady Next door.

Editorial Review

Something is happening--black Lab Sally can feel it in the air. When she sees the suitcase, she knows it for sure--she and her human companion (who appears only as an arm or pair of feet now and then) are going on vacation! Soon they're off to an island in the ocean. Along the way, Sally sees birds, boats, lots of other dogs, and even a whale. At the beach, Sally explores and plays. "The air smells great, just like cat food!" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your average children's book!
I read this to kids from pre-school to 3rd grade. Not only does this book have beautiful pictures and lyrical language, but it lends itself to greater intelligent discussions.Kids yearn to talk about the various forms of transportation Sally takes, if it's really Sally driving that car, why dogs need friends too, and how much fun it is to be curious.Soon, after we reread the entire Sally series a couple more times, we are going to make our own book about when Sally comes to OUR classrooms.I know the style of Sally's story will translate to the kids' understanding about what's great about the environment they live in!
4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
My daughter always asks for this one. Simple text, brightly colored pictures, and doggies!

Editorial Review

Emily Elizabeth has a big red dog--the biggest, reddest dog on her street, and his name is Clifford. How big is he? He's so big that when he runs after cars, he catches them in his mouth, and his doghouse is bigger than Emily Elizabeth's house. Needless to say, he makes an excellent watchdog. Children love the idea of the things you could do and the fun you could have with a giant dog, and Norman Bridwell's delightful, Clifford-proof board-book edition will not disappoint. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Scary message?
The art work in this book is fabulous. But one of the messages - wild animals are very scary I am not sure I like.I bought it but will donate it to the library rather than giving to my 3-yr old granddaughter. She is being raised with a love and yes respect for all of nature's creatures and I think this went just a little too far for little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our favorite books
Our daughter has enjoyed this book since she was less than a year old. It has wonderful, expressive pictures of animals that come out of the woods to feast on the muffins that Annie puts out.Annie hopes to find an animal to replace her cat that went missing during a snow storm, but none of them is friendly and cuddly as her cat was.5-0 out of 5 stars How To Find A New Pet (Not!)
In Annie, as in The Mitten and others, Jan Brett tells a fun children's tale while gently showing how a children's actions affect the world around them.Just as the boy in The Mitten winds up scaring all of the animals that then crawl into the mitten, Annie's actions also have wide repercussions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book for children 9 and up.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful and easy to understand. Children can follow and understand how to care for and train their new puppy. This is not a book for people who are looking to learn about dog behavior the history of a dog. You will need to find a more informative book like; Good Owners, Great Dogs by Brian Kilcommons for that kind of information. But for older children who want to learn to care for their dog this is a good book for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for children
This is an excellent book for your children if you plan to make puppy a new member of your family. It guides the children through the various stages of training a puppy, has good photographs supporting the text and highlights certain important phrases. Whislt it, of course, does not cover all aspects of dog traing, it does not need to do that: the training will be the adults responsibility, and not the child's. The child however can and should support those efforts and by reading this book can add to the training and hence become a responsible dog owner her/ himself.

4-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD BOOK

this book was ok i mean if you were a little kid you would like it but it does sorta teach you manners

5-0 out of 5 stars best book we ever bought
Though (. . .) some of the examples being a bit odd for a preschooler, it's been one of the best books we ever bought for our son (then 2 yrs, now almost 4.) Our son absolutely adors Clifford and we use him (and the book) as a role model. When he starts, or does, something naughty, we'll ask, "Would Clifford do that?" Sounds kinda hokey, but it works.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Mom: 'We read it every night!'
This book has it all - for adults and children. It's an interesting story, told humorously, with beautiful illustrations.Best of all, my two year old loves it.For a month now we've been reading it every night. She never tires of it.Amazingly, neither do I.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wagging the Dragon To Get the Dog
A staid but stylish 1950's setting complements this simple tale of a young boy who wants a dog but winds up with a dragon.Wearing his rolled-up, patched denim overalls, he repeatedly asks his culotted mom for a dog as she does household chores (of course, the father is nowhere in sight). Clearly, she doesn't want the extra work. However, this baby boomer is clever: When he asks his mom if he can have a pet dragon, she replies (thinking that SHE is the clever one)," "If you can find a dragon, you can keep it for a pet."

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible story incredible pictures
My son wanted this book when he heard about it at a book fair at school. It is an incredible book.We love the way it is written from a little boys perspective (Xan was 10 when the book was written.) We recently had the opportunity to meet Carol Hopcraft and her husband when they came to our city.Dooms was not really a pet - he was free to go as he liked - but he did not ever leave them.He hunted - he was not feed like a pet once he reached maturity.Shallah, his successor, did the same.I am sure their current cheetah does it as well. The book is heartwarming and is written with the love and respect they had for Dooms. This is even more evident when they talk about their life with Dooms. They, more than most of us, understand that cheetahs are wild animals. This book is not meant to tote the benefits of have a pet cheetah - it is book about the bond between humans and animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbookfor Kids or Adults
Why is it that "kids" books are sometimes so much more interesting than Adult books? As if upon reaching adulthood we some how lose interest in animals. Well, perhaps I'm a kid at heart. I found this a great book. This is a very touching story about a family's relationship with an adopted Cheetah Cub. The story is simple yet full of truth and insight. For me, it highlights the need to see animals as dignified creatures in need of our compassion and protection. This is a book that will hopefully send an important message to young readers.Regardless of whether Cheetahs shouldbe or should not be, or were or were not domesticated, this is a cool book with neat photos and I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dooms
Actually, cheetahs are not and have never been domesticated, and they are and always have been very difficult to breed in captivity. Although they do have a less aggressive attitude than typical wild cats, they are not pets and should not be. Utilizing cheetahs to hunt over the past few hundred years was not the result of captive bred cheetahs, they were wild caught. Fortunately, outside of wild orphaned cheetahs in Africa, they are not a cat that you can purchase as a pet, because they are not suited as a pet and are not domesticated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kids Love This Book
When I was a working librarian, I read this books (and the others)to my storytimes. When I retired I started to volunteer in an inner city school. I was not certain how the children would react to the book. I am now in my sixth year reading to Preschool, Kindergarten and First Grade. They hear the first four books each year and they always ask me to repeat the books. The line about "no one had ever asked him to come in" always gets a great response. I think everyone should read these McDuff books. So many classes can't be wrong!

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't take a bite out of crime.Just out of shortbread.
Dear old Rosemary Wells. If you've ever read her books about that famous bunny Max or classic titles like, "Morris' Disappearing Bag" then you know that her stories, while disjointed, can often be truly charming works of preschool art.So when I discovered the McDuff books (written by her but illustrated by someone else entirely) I was ill at ease.I mean, Wells draws such cute little bunnies. How could anyone else adapt to her words? On reading the first book of the McDuff series, "McDuff Moves In", I was amazed to find myself suddenly on the oposte side of the fence. The pictures in this book are really quite charming. From the cute little Scottie named McDuff to the 1950s setting, visually this story's a charmer. But strange as it may seem, Wells's words are out-of-place here.Though a brief tale with little in the way of plot, somehow this book is not as direct or understandable as it might be.A pity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I own this book, as well as others in the series. They are just great! My mom owns a Westie, perfectly named Duffy(he got the name before we new about the books), and the illustrator captures the essence of the Westie. Every picture is perfectly drawn to show the character of a Westie. I love the author as well. I have been a teacher and have always read Ms. Wells' books to my students and the McDuff series is loved by all. McDuff moves in is just a fun book to read and I recommend it to all ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah for Carl!
Follow Carl is a wonderful book for all fans of this special Rottweiler. He takes his charges through a fun filled day in the park. The colorful illustrations encourage the reader to embellish the story and truly havefun with this book.As the owner of two Rottweilers, all the Carl booksare in my son's library! Three cheers for Carl!

5-0 out of 5 stars Carl is the leader and the children love to follow!
Having all of the "Carl" books I thought perhaps Ms. Day would run out of "things" for Carl to do.Not so.Carl has plenty to do, so much that everyone ends up napping--some of the children are positioned like little puppies.Carl, of course, is his usual self.Veryentertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Ms. Day's excellent, enchanting Carl books.
As usual, Ms. Day has captured the essence of Carl and the childrens' escapades. Anyone who enjoys children and dogs (especially Rottweilers)will appreciate the accuracy of both the stories, the story line, the poses, andthe facial expressions of all the characters.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gently humorous
Downing a bowl of alphabet soup the family dog comes up wordy in Susan Meddaugh's gently funny picture book. Friendly illustrations will soon have sympathetic kids relating their own version as Martha wears out her wonder with incessant chatter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny for Dog Lovers
I bought this book as a gift for a 5 year old, but found the humor to be a bit more sophisticated. My 9 year old son (& dog lover) found it to be hilarious. It will become a favorite gift of mine to give children in the 7-9 age bracket.

4-0 out of 5 stars a talking dog!
Kids love the idea of a talking dog, and Martha's story is amusing, as she develops the ability to speak after eating alphabet soup and then drives her family mad with her nonstop talking (except during her own televisioin shows, of course). It's unfortunate that the family eventually collectively yell at Martha to "SHUT UP!" but we just talk about the inappropriateness of the family's response, even when they're frustrated.Eventually they resolve the situation when Martha proves to be brave, intelligent and lucky during an encounter with a burglar.A bit loopy but kids love it/ ...
