5-0 out of 5 stars ERICA PERL DOES IT AGAIN!!
ERICA PERL has a delightful command of lyrical and comic language, spritely and totally engaging. She never talks down to her readers and keeps us giggling no matter how many times we've read her books. The illustrations in this book are particularly quirky and imaginative. It's a fabulous book and Erica Perl is already taking her place among the truly innovative and gifted writers for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars they love it!
My kids were big fans of Chicken Bedtime (they still crack up over "the hamsters...what hours they keep") and Ninety-Three in My Family is another hit! Hooray for the lyrical, comical illustrations, matching the fun-to-read text. Congratulations to the team!
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read for kids AND parents
93 in My Family is delightful. But don't take that from me, take it from my toddler - my son bops up and down in my lap as I read him the fun, rhythmic prose and turn the pages to show him all the charming, colorful pictures of this special family that includes, among other things, three armadillos, two llamas, and more cats and dogs than I could shake a stick at. With its nice mix of catchy prose and extremely entertaining illustrations, 93 in My Family is a great book for older children as well. I just sent a copy to my seven year-old niece. She was a huge fan of Perl's Chicken Bedtime is Really Early, and I am sure she will love this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We like it for all the wrong reasons.
My 6-year-old brought this book home from school, and it's a fine learning-to-read book for her. What struck her, though, was the (unintentionally?) hilarious nature of a few of the illustrations. They have to be seen to be appreciated.Call us juvenile, but we laughed until we cried.I'm buying one for home, and more for gifts! Thanks, Biscuit!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Children's book
My daughter loves the Biscuit series books!I think she's attracted to the cute golden dog named Biscuit. It also helps when her dad or me read the books with animation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
I read this book for a book report in 5th grade. I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed Ginger Pye. It was very entertaining. I think this book is mainly for grades 3-7 because its big and has some big words too. Loved this book overall

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cat Has It!
Pinky Pye is yet another well written book by Elenor Estes. As appealing as both the Moffats series and the infamous Ginger Pye.This title is an excellent choice for both the traditional and creative book report formats for readers of 4th through 6th grades. If you love animals, and a solid story line of sibling relationship, this book is for you!Besides, where else could you read about a typewriting cat!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pinky Pye
Pinky Pye is a charming book about a little black cat. Pinky Pye is about the Pye family and they go to Fire Island. Mr. Pye goes to look for birds and brings the family. At there cottage they find a cat in a crabnet, there was a sign on her that said "ABANDID". It said her name was Pinky too. The Pyes decided to keep her. One day she started type writing. They started calling her the type writing cat. They found an owl in the eaves and gave it to Mr. Bish, his owner. You should read this book to find out the ending. I think this is a book for all ages. ... Read more

This book wasn't as helpful as I expected.Alot of it just common things that are generally practiced with experienced dog owners. It really didn't offer any new activities.
4-0 out of 5 stars a fun book to read and learn about your dog
My seven year old son loves this book and has taught me, as the mother, quite a few things for training and playing with our new puppy. A wonderful and playful, yet sensile approach for children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Sequel, Some Reservations
Shiloh Season is the second book in the Shiloh Trilogy. In this ongoing saga, 11-year-old Marty must face some of the consequences of past decisions, particularly the secret of how he managed to "buy" his beagle Shiloh from Judd Travers, his previous owner. Just when we thought Marty's fears about Shiloh's well-being were over, Judd begins to drink heavily and is displaying erratic behavior which causes Marty to once again fear for Shiloh's safety, as well as his own. Marty faces some difficult decisions again, as well as showing maturity as he wrestles with needing to protect Shiloh and wanting to find out if it's possible to teach kindness to someone who has never known it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Henry & Mudge book.
The winsome, colorful illustrations in the Henry and Mudge books are delightful. I used to read the series when I was in elementary school. This one, for whatever reason, has remained my favorite and is actually the only one I owned personally. Any fellow dog-loving children should enjoy learning to read and explore with Henry and Mudge, as well as other book series like 'Nate the Great,' a detective. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea
I picked this book out at our local library for my two year old daughter because she loves dogs and the beach. It turned out to be such a big hit that I am buying it!She of course can't read, but enjoyed the story andpictures very much. She loves Mudges playfullness and had just been to thebeach recently so she could relate to Henry and his father playing in thewater. The length of the story is just right also for her. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
"Flies can't be pets! Flies are Pests!" is what Buzz thinks while he is searching for a new pet to enter the pet contest. Then, THIS fly says the boy's name, Buzz. Buzz is delighted and names him Fly Guy. When his parents hear Fly Guy call their son's name they also understand just how smart the fly really is. Now, Can Buzz and Fly Guy convince the judges at the pet show?
5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Easy Reader "Chapter" Book
It is SOOO difficult to find amusing and interesting easy reader books.I stumbled upon this book (and the sequel, "Super Fly Guy") when looking for books for a student I am tutoring. It is probably a primer to 1st grade level text, but it has "chapters" which makes it seem a bit "older" to the student, thus building their confidence level. In addition, it has FABULOUS illustrations and children think the story is hilarious.I rarely buy hardback easy readers, but this one was worth the extra investment.I can hardly wait until the next book in the series comes out in September 2006!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for starting readers
Although this book is a "chapter" book, I found that we could read it in one sitting. The words are repetitive and easy to read with only a little help from mom or dad...which is the best way to help a child learn to read. My son is 6 and in kindergarden and we both enjoyed this book very much. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Marcus' review on Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night
I liked thisbook because it's about camping and I like camping. The fish had a great picture.Henry's mother was setting up the camp and the really funny part was when Mudge unpacked a ham sandwich and it looked like a bunch of leaves. His dad brought his guitar and a smile on his face because he was happy to be camping. It was funny when Henry and Mudge thought that there were bears so they were hugging each other.I thought it was a good book because in the end Mudge does something really funny but you have to read the book to find out what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night
We have every one of the Henry and Mudge books and have been reading them to our daughter since she was two. She is four now and she still loves them.We would reccommend these books for both boys and girls. There is aHenry and Mudge book for every occassion.Henry and Mudge and the StarryNight is perfect to prepare for a camping trip. The feeling of a campoutcomes through loud and clear and the story is delightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars peaceful, creative, and attractive
This book combines fairly simple craft projects with an eco-friendly approach. Ideas are divided by season, as the availability of materials will vary, and projects range from animal sanctuaries and feeders to rustic toys and arts. The whole book strives to foster a love ofand respect for nature, discussing natural phenomena and facts about the everyday things we know little about. The whole feel of the book really worked for me, and I think imparting this respect for our planet is always a good idea, not only because we have to live here and treat our surroundings well, but because nature has so much to offer us. These ideas make for great shared experiences with a family or class. Great fun, educational, and filled with lovely photos and ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Crafting Book
I recently found this book at my local library and and loved it so much that I am looking to add it to my collection. This is not a book filled with cutsie fifteen minute projects that the kids do on their own, rather it is for adults to explore with kids, actually spending time with them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Nature Crafts for Kids
This book contains wonderful ideas for a wide range of ages using items found in nature. The crafts are arranged according to the season in which most of the materials will be found. They give alternate places in which tofind some materials or replacemant materials. There are great illustrationsand very good step by step instructions for creating the items. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, but never sugary
Sometimes when you want an animal story, you don't want it to be anthropomorphic. I mean, talking animals are nice, but the Disney factor gets to me after a while. This gentle little book is nothing more than a day in the life of a dog (playing in the sand and the sea, riding in the car) and a cat (escaping from the baby, playing with the roll of toilet paper), but it is well-written and incredibly, beautifully illustrated. McCarty's softly shaded, softly colored images are sweet, but never saccharine. As an especially nice touch, the story rotates between the pets as the pages turn, contrasting their day of fun. A quiet story, just perfect for bedtime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Bedtime book for a toddler

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful easy reader -parents will enjoy it, too.
Henry and Mudge books are some of the best books available to beginning readers, and parents would be hard-pressed not to enjoy them as well. While a few of the books in the series show Henry's idyllically happy parents in a way that might make children from less traditional families sad or "homesick" for that situation, this particular book is purely about a little boy, his big dog, their imaginations, and being a kid in the summer.Cynthia Rylant's writing is fun yet poetic, and Sucie Stevenson's illustrations are charming as always.

5-0 out of 5 stars Summer adventures with H&M!
Henry and Mudge are the best of friends. It doesn't matter at all that one of them walks on four legs and drools a lot!!5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of them all...so far
My 4-year-old son, Frank, has 16 of the 18 (?) books that are available in this collection, and although all of them come hightly recommended, I believe Green Time to be the best. This book highlights all that is goodabout a boy and his dog.Rylant never personifies Mudge too much butdepicts their relationship beutifully. When my son read about Mudgegetting a bath, he giggled as each part was washed. But the biggestsurprise was watching his sheer delight as Mudge shook from head-to-toe. He understands that Henry would cry when he gets stung by a bee, and helaughed when Mudge eats popcorn. These books are simple and kind, and Ihope there are more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars adorable!
I'm a children's Librarian, and I can't wait to recommend this book to the kids.I'm sure they will love it as much as I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Something tells me it's all happening at the zoo
A couple months ago a child walked into a library where I was the children's librarian.Softly she asked if we had anything else by the author of "A Room With a Zoo".My library is notorious for getting new books in late, but in this particular case I had seen the title already in a bookstore.I showed her Jules Feiffer's other books, like "The Man In the Ceiling" and "A Barrel of Laughs, a Vale of Tears".She looked them over vaguely but they were obviously not what she wanted. What she wanted was another book exactly like, "A Room With a Zoo" and I (not having read it) was hard put to find her something similar.Time has passed, I have read the book, and I STILL cannot for the life of me figure out what I should have told her.Feiffer has deftly tapped into a single child's love for the animals she keeps in such a one-of-a-kind way that animal loving kids out there are sure to find a kindred spirit in the character of Julie.Using everything from slapstick to sweet moments to the reality that comes with owning a variety of different animals, Feiffer is always real, always interesting, and never dull.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hideous disappointment.
This book isn't cute at all - it's actually chilling if you like animals, understand that an animal isn't a toy, and realize that sometimes a kid isn't ready for a pet. This is clearly the case with Julie, the young "heroine" of this book. In her first misjudgement, she tries to introduce her hamster to her full grown cat, despite having been warned repeatedly that it would not work. The cat naturally tries to kill the hamster. Is this supposed to be cute? Funny? Whichever it is, or not, her parents respond to this display of bad judgement by buying her an oscar (a carnivorous fish). After a time, she decides the oscar is lonely & buys some goldfish, which she adds to the tank for the oscar to "make friends" with - again, despite a warning from a knowledgeable adult (in this case a pet shop owner, who proceeds to sells her the fish anyways in yet another display of the adult idiocy with which this book is rife - at least Julie has the excuse of being nine) that a hungry oscar will eat anything it wants to. She wakes up the next day to find that the oscar has indeed eaten one of the goldfish. Even after that, the menagerie continues to grow, with things spiralling further & further out of control as the work required to properly care for the animals far outstrips the young owner's ability to look after all of her charges. If anything, this book should be read as a cautionary tale about making sure that a child understands the responsibility that an owner has to care for an animal properly prior to indulging that child's request for even one pet, and as a warning of the fact that the parents need to be ready to step in & take over that responsibility, should the child not be ready. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Kind of bland - just "okay"
I bought this book for my son's 7th birthday. It is obviously for a younger child - not to age 8, in my opinion.Although, I can't see that my son would have ever been thrilled with it, because the pictures are not very colorful.5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there were many more books exaclty like this one!
My son and I discovered this book when he was two.Not only did it become one of our favorite reads, it also permanently increased his awareness of nature and his ability to observe it well.Flaps fold out into detailed three-page spreads of a variety of settings (in the woods and meadow, by a river, at the pond), and an inventory of read-and-seek items listed by their specific names encourages young ones to find and identify correctly a myriad of plants, animals, and even signs that let you know an animal has been there previously. A guide at the back helps you know you have matched up all the items correctly. It's like an excellent, anywhere field guide for little ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute and fun
My son likes this quick and cute rhyming book about Elmo and his dirty puppy. It has great vocabulary and bright, fun illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, in or out of the tub!
Our 14-month-old daughter LOVES this book!It is the perfect length for her (she loses interest in longer books with more text) and has an excellent, catchy rhyme to each page.Because we have dogs, she recognizes the illustration of Elmo's puppy as a dog and excitedly "woofs" at it.When seated on my or my husband's lap during reading time, she will hand this book to us over and over to read over and over.Sometimes she boinks us in the face with the book while doing this, but that's okay--it's made of cushiony foam covered in soft plastic! It will not make your toddler cry if he/she falls on it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Elmo Bath book!
Just received this two days ago and my son has requested this book in the bath and out, he LOVES it and so do we! It's short, sweet and just adorable. Don't hesitate, this is all thumbs up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
My daughter (now 6) received this book as a gift three years ago, and still loves to read it.One reviewer complained that the pop ups are not especially "creative"; I thought they were wonderful, with the added advantage of being relatively sturdy (compared to many other pop up books we own, which are constantly being torn) and easy for young fingers to manipulate without adult help. And yes, the eyes look a little "freaky" to those of us who have seen "The Exorcist."Presumably, most 3 to 6 year olds haven't seen it!My daughter loved that she could read this book on her own when she was 3, and one of her favorite pages was the one with the blinking eyes!

5-0 out of 5 stars My child loves it
My child loves this pop-up book...maybe it's because we own rotties ourselves, but she hasn't gotten tired of this book that she's had for two years. She always asks to read it and enjoys the pop-ups, and push and pull tabs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Carl is a classic, but this pop up is not!
First let me say that I love the Carl books, especially "Good Dog Carl."I love the concept, the way that you get to make up your ownwords. Most of the Carl books are inventive and endearing classics.Infact, perhaps the reason that I am so disappointed with this adaptation isthat I am holding it to this same high standard. The Carl books areawesome; however, this pop up version is just OK, at best.Read more

Editorial Review

You never have to worry about losing this book at the beach... itfloats! Kids can pop out the soft, nontoxic foam sea creatures to answer therhymes about who they are and feel their bumpy textures. "Who crawls on the seafloor / And skitters up to shore?" Is it a slippery fish, a prickly crab, apuckery sea horse, or a ticklish starfish? Kids remove the brightly coloredshapes, and then easily press them back in. It's a perfect match for the beach, bath, playground--anywhere at all. Check out Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
My 17 month old son loves this book, I bought the whole textured series for him. He's had the books for several months and had not gotten bored of them. Every adult who comes to the house loves the books and goes to buy them for their own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Versatile!
I was given this book as a gift and was immediately taken in by the foam textures and colors.Upon opening the book and discovering text hidden behind the pop out sea creatures, I was thrilled. It is a great first book since the child can feel all the different sea creatures. My 4 month old loved teething on the sea horse! She learned very quickly that she could pop out the creatures and that each felt differently.Furthermore, I could wash them when she finished chewing on them or let her play with them in the bath.5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for babies 0 to 2 years old
My 11-month old baby loves this book. Finally a book that she can play with, and read without destroying it.It has: a fish, a crab, a sea horse, and a starfish. It serves as a bath toy, and is a colorful puzzle. She picks up the pieces and tries to put them back on.It is surviving her teething quite well so far... I'm buying more of that series for her and for gifts! ... Read more
