Mr. Putter books are classics
I had heard so many good things about the Mr. Putter books that I decided to try them out with my 3-year old daughter, thinking that she may be a bit young for more words and fewer pictures.However, there are pictures on every page and only a few sentences to each.My daughter loves these books, especially this story.Her stuffed cat has been renamed Tabby. There are better ways to see America
1) Drawings seem a little grotesque.The proportion and perspective is often askew, and human figures are distorted.Not terribly pleasant to look at.
Exhibitionist Hippy Loves America
This is a book about an exhibitionist hippy, who despite her hippy ways, does love America.The exhibitionist hippy, like so many tree-hugging hippies, ends up in Oregon.Good for her.

Good Fun
My two boys (ages 6 and 8) really enjoyed this book.Great illustrations and a really fun read.It's good practice for the beginning reader.Some very familiar words and some more challenging but shorter than a chapter book so it keeps their attention! ... Read more

good for child or pet loss
This book was a gift. It was given to me because my son passed away from a terminal genetic muscle defect 11 days after he was born.
A very helpful book!!
My niece died when my daughter was only 5.She struggled to come to terms with the concept of death, and to understand why her cousin had to die.Even more so, were her questions on what her cousin would do in Heaven.How would she live without her mommy and daddy?In our search to help her to understand a little better, a friend showed us this book.It was just the nudge she needed to move on, and accept that her cousin was not coming back, and was safe and well cared for in Heaven.Now, 3 years later, my daughter still loves this book.She now reads it to her new baby sister, and tells her all about their cousin in Heaven, and how she too, is taking caring of animals.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to deal with a loss.

An excellent introduction for children in understanding what is involved with becoming good pet owners
Very nicely enhanced by the black-and-white illustrations of Cathy Pool, Second Chance: A Tale Of Two Puppies by Judy Masrud is about two young boys adopting a pair of "penmates" as their canine companions. Second Chance uses the story of these two boys to guiding young readers ages 6 to 12 through the necessity of responsibility and care when adopting an animal. Second Chance deftly offers these young readers a complete and readily accessible depiction of what love and intimacy really means when treating a pet as a member of the family, and what the realities and responsibilities of having and caring for a pet. Enthusiastically recommended for family, school, and community library reference "Pets & Wildlife" collections and supplemental reading lists, Second Chance is an excellent introduction for children in understanding what is involved with becoming good pet owners.

Virginia 5th graders review The Trouble with Tuck
Our summer school class just finished reading this fun book.It is about a thirteen year old girl named Helen and her dog, Tuck.Helen and her family live in California in the 1950s.The trouble mentioned in the title is that Tuck, a Labrador Retriever, is losing his sight.Helen does not want to give Tuck away because he has saved her life twice!Even though he starts to act strange, Helen knows that there is a way to help him.Want to find out how?Read the book!
Great book at a great price!
My sister recommended this book to me, and, surprisingly, it's difficult to find in our local bookstore.Therefore, I was happy to see that it was available on Amazon.com.I love the story about the little girl and her dog, and, if you're an animal lover, this book is definitely a must-read for all ages!

'Tuck' shows no sign of imagination
Why do people write books so uninspired and idiotic such as this one? And why do they think kids will like them? "The Trouble With Tuck" tries to be heartwarming but never succeeds. There's a fork, but no meat.

Steven Kellog keeps imagination alive
I Love the imagination that Steven kellog puts into his books and illustrations.
Enchanting for kids & adults!
This is the kind of book with humor, imagination, and gorgeous artwork that both kids & adults will love & remember. I bought this one for my grandson to be born in 2 months, because I remember how much his mother loved it. I read it many times to her & then she read it to me & her little brother. Truly the kind of book that lives on in your heart and sparks a love of reading in children.

Fabulous Book for both your child and you
My son (age 3) and I are absolutely in LOVE w/this book, the illustrations are beautiful and the text is equally lovely, I can't believe there aren't more reviews on this book, maybe it's new? I don't know but if you are considering getting this book I very highly reccomend it!

Just Fantastic!!
"Red Rubber Boot Day" is a feast of color and poetry.This was my daughter's favorite book as a 3-year-old, and it is regularly read and enjoyed by us both several years later. The pictures are exuberant, and the text really does make you smell the rain! I have never seen this book in a bookstore so it would make a most delightful and surprising gift for a book lover.

This great book is very supportive of new readers.
Massive Mudge is much more than a mere mutt. He is a tail-wagger, toenail-chewer, moth-eater, and breaker of grandmother's things. Most importantly however, he is Henry's best friend. Beginning readers will feelright at home amongst the words and illustrations of Rylant's tender storyabout a boy and his bog on a visit to grandmother's house. Unobtrusively,Stevenson's iluustrations harmonize with Rylant's words. Where Rylantdescribes grandmother's "strange house with a dark yard,"Stevenson contributes a double-page illustration depicting the darkness ofthe yard where a racoon, owl, and assorted bats live. The images buttressthe comprehension and readability of challenging words without suffocatingthem in a sea of lines and color. For example, as Henry voices hisanxieties about a bear, bobcat, moth, and mouse, simplistic cartoon-likepictures of each animal are nearby, offering visual clues. Chapterspunctuate the book's action-filled but will not intimidate young readers,for the five-word lines within do not exceed 10per page. Lengthy words like"fingernails" appear repeatedly and readers can dissectprotracted sentences into more manageable chunks with assistance fromcommas and brief lines: "Henry bit his fingernails, (new line) Mudgebit his toenails, (new line)and the car drove on." Inexperiencedreaders, reassured by the resolution of Henry's realistic woes of sleepingin a strange new setting, will see this young dog-lover andcomic-book-reader as a contemporary and as a source of comfort. hopeful
this book is hopeful because of the fact that he wanted to make sure everything was alright and so he traveled just to do so and they all thanked him in the end of his journey because he saved his owner.

Great for a travel story
I bought this book on cassette for my 21/2 yr old son to listen to on the airplane, since it was about a vacation.He watches Clifford every day and loves the book.Although, I don't like the part about Emily Elizabeth playing with bear cubs and the mama bear comes along and Clifford saves the day and they are all friends.I think they could have written something different.

Awesome book!
Mr. Putter and Tabby are just a delightful reading experience.Pick the pears invokes the fun and creativity sometimes forgotten in today's much more fast paced world.We have this entire series and read from it at least weekly, but Pick the Pears is easily in the top three.

Sweet, mischevious fun
Mr. Putter and his orange-striped cat, Tabby, enjoy Fall because they love pear jelly. One day, the pears on his tree are ripe, so Mr. Putter sets out to climb his ladder and pick them. Unfortunately, his "cranky knees" will not cooperate. He must think of another way to get the pears down from the tree.

An essential book for any educator, but especially for environmental education. Also good for parents and others who work with children.A way to let them discover the wonders of nature, even in a city.

Showcases nature studies and appreciation activities
Joseph Cornell is the author of Sharing Nature With Children and Sharing Nature With Children II . This two volume set showcase nature studies and appreciation activities that any parent, teacher, or child care provider can readily engage in with children. Ann appreciation for the complex and interrelated life forms that comprise the exosphere of their environments is a solid basis to establish a life-long enthusiasm for nature and the out-of-doors, as well as a lasting commitment to environmental issues and concerns. Each volume is available independently, but school and community libraries are urged to acquire them both for the nature activities and environmental reference collections.

Cornell's book for children
I had no idea that Joseph Cornell had written a book for children. This is a rare find. (It ranks up there with Robert Walser's little-known treatise on horse-grooming, or Arthur Brand's book of stock quotes.) There are stories here of hope and joy. You really get a sense of Cornell's engagement with a visionary romanticism when he encourages the reader to "let the child see into the world of nature, for there they will find a balm for their sorrows, a calm for their heart, and a palm against time." Arthur's Neighborhood: eith punch out figures and flaps
Our two year old absolutely loves this book.We've given this book as a gift to all the two year olds we know, they all like it a lot.We purchased our daughter a new book. She had torn the figures and slots they go in on the old book because she plays with the book daily!We had the figures laminated so they would hold up longer, it cost @$2 at a printing shop.One problem with some of the books is that the pages come apart,they need more glue inbetween!

great "waiting room" book
Over the past two or three years my five-year-old daughter has worn out two copies of this book. I am ordering a third. She never gets tired of moving around the punch-out characters, talking to them and for them.

20-Month-Old's Favorite Thing in the World
My daughter absolutely adores this book. Like another reviewer, my only complaint is the sturdiness of the play people. Once I'd taped Arthur's head on for the second time, it occurred to me to laminate 'em! That's what I'll do when I get our backup version of this. So that's the ticket. This book was kind of boring
I am seven years old.I don't think I understood the book.There weren't very many words and it wasn't that exciting.I would have rather been Henry's friend because the work seemed like it might be fun, and I would ride a train for anything!I didn't really like the book because I don't really like the illustrations.I like books about more real things, because bears don't walk on two feet, and they don't ride trains.
Little kids might miss the point
This was a great idea for a book. I really liked the fact that it tried to introduce young chidlren to philosophical ideas. However, after listening to the story, my 4-year-old insists that he'd rather be "Henry's friend" (who works all day to earn money to ride the train) rather than Henry (who walks) because he's much rather have a train ride no matter how much work was involved. I think I'll shelve this book for another year and then try again.

Henry's journey
This story is good for very young children in learning about real life situations.For example, the character Henry goes on a journey and enjoys the trip;however, the friend works hard to earn a train ticket and doesn't enjoy the trip as well.This is a good learning tool for children to understand to enjoy the journey in life and not just focus on the outcomes of situations.

Cutest story for dog lovers
I just love this book. The author writes a sweet and simple story told from Sally's point of view but what really captures you are the beautiful illustrations. Stephen Huneck's work is sold at gallerys across the country and many of the pieces that he sells are images from the books. I think that they are wood carvings/ cutting? Excuse my ignorance. We also have Sally goes to the farm. Both are lighthearted and fun. They really make us all smile. For anyone with a lab in their life this is a must have!

The saddest dog in the world
When I think of picture books starring black Labrador pups, I have to admit that my first thoughts usually go to those insipid "Carl" books that are bafflingly popular.I wish I had a better frame of reference, but until I discovered, "Sally Goes to the Mountains" I didn't know of any other good Lab-based picture books.As it turns out, this particular picture book is one of many that chronicle the adventures of the oddly dour Sally.Though the techniques that created the book are brimming with talent, the books themselves are a bit pat.A lovely package that circles a so-so book.
A book for any age!
Sally Goes to the Mountains is a book I would give as a gift to any dog lover from 4 to 94. It's colorful illustrations, charming and witty captions, subject matter and size makes it the perfect coffee table book. I'll cherish mine forever. Adorable and fun!

Many children's classics are translated into Latin
This is but one of the many children's classics that are translated into Latin. Naturally there are going to be people that will pick apart the book and say that is not correct form or syntax. Then again Walter has not been around that long. And pulling it apart is really part of the fun. Just remember that the translator Rob Dobbin has translated several books into various languages. He is the Author of "Epictetus: Discourses Book 1" and soon will translate the complete works of Epictetus.
