5-0 out of 5 stars What happened to the illustrations?
The five stars are for the book, not the illustrations in this current edition. I love all the McDuff books.I used to have a Westie and so they really captured my attention.I started buying them before my granddaughter was born and started reading them to her very early in her life. She absolutely loves them and asks me to read them to her over and over again. However, I am disappointed in the illustrations in the latest editions of the books (like this one). They are not the same as in the earlier editions yet the illustrator is the same. Why is that? The earlier editions had wonderful illustrations that looked exactly like the Westies, but the newer editions are different. They look very cartoonish. Please bring back the "old look" and please ask Rosemary Wells to write more books to be illustrated as they used to be.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars If McDuff can learn to understand French, then maybe your young reader can too
For some reason I am having problems finding a list that puts the McDuff books in order.I know that "McDuff Moves In" was the first book in the series, written by Rosemary Wells and illustrated by Susan Jeffers.I thougth that "McDuff Goes to School" might be the second book in the series because once Fred and Lucy (not Ricky and Ethel) let this cute little white-haired dog into their lives I figured that sending him to obedience school was the logical next step. But "McDuff Goes to School" was published in 2001 and that puts it after "McDuff Comes Home," "McDuff and the Baby," and "McDuff's New Friend."That involved a bit of on-line research, but the fact that there was a baby in the house was a big clue that this adventure took place after "McDuff and the Baby" at least.Where "McDuff Saves teh Day" and "McDuff's Wild Romp" fit into the chronology is not yet clear to me, but I will work on it.
2-0 out of 5 stars Great if you speak French - disappointment otherwise
We have three of the books in this series and love them, but were very disappointed with this book.Yes the illustration are beautiful as with the other books, but about half the text is in French. I'm sure that's great if you speak French but its miserable for those of us who don't. German or Italian would have been fine but I couldn't even stumble through the French and the story was mostly lost as a result. ... Read more

Editorial Review

On a Fourth of July picnic with his human family, McDuff, a beloved buttrouble-mongering white terrier, inadvertently allows "silent invaders" (namely, ants) to make off with the entire contents of the lunch basket. Luckily, McDuffhas a way with strangers (and their picnic baskets), and in no time flat, he'sfinagled an invitation from a lonely older man to share his meal with thefamily.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dog's Life: Everything Goes McDuff's Way!
McDuff, the irrepressible White Highland Terrier, joins owners Fred, Lucy, and their little baby for a traditional Fourth of July picnic in this immensely satisfying book. Susan Jeffers' beautiful rich colors, blend of comic strip panels and large-format pictures, and attention to period accuracy convincingly portray the post-war patriotism, hope, and economic prosperity of the late 1940's and early 1950's.Her drawings evoke Norman Rockwell, Boy Scout magazines, and the woodblock pictures that graced early children's books, and they are a major factor in the book's huge appeal.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wells' adorable Westie is a day saver.
I really enjoyed reading this book to 16 preschoolers at the Festus Public Library in Festus, Missouri. As a storytime book, McDuff Saves the Day makes for a fun and entertaining read. The artwork and story are beautiful and creative. The plot is charming, simple and realistic, giving McDuff (a fluffy white Westie) a perfect opportunity to be the cute dog that he is.This is my first McDuff story and I thouroughly enjoyed it.All dog lovers should have this in their children's book collection.4-0 out of 5 stars Woa! This book will blow you away!
I love this book! I like when McDuff has to sit by the baby then on Lucy's lap and then Fred has to sit in the back seat and McDuff sits in front. My name is Fred and Fred's name is Fred!Mcduff steals everyone's picnic because his picnic was stolen by ants. He steals a man's food so Lucy and Fred come eat with the man and the man isn't lonely and Lucy and Fred get food and watch fire works! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Dog Owner Needs It!
I'm told this book is no longer in print and I am SO sad! It's the best book to read your child if you are a dog owner. The dog is muddy, slobbery, sneaky and stinky.Yet the little boy who is describing his dog is in complete adoration of him.Typical! All the things the dog does that are wrong don't matter since the boy loves his dog.
5-0 out of 5 stars One Really Great Dog.....
As our young narrator tells us at the beginning, "I've got a dog." And with that one little sentence, this proud owner is off and running, as he describes his wonderful pet in detail. He's a red dog, a big red dog and he's happy and muddy and smart. He's bouncy and slobbery and sometimes very sneaky. And he's stinky, "the most stinky dog I've ever met!"But most of all, we're told on the last page, "That's him!/That's my dog!/Isn't he a great dog!"..... Using color, changing type sizes, creative spacing, motion and energy, Rick Walton and Julia Gorton have authored an innovative and inventive little book about adjectives. The simple text builds on itself with each page turn until it practically explodes off the page, and is complemented by Ms Gorton's bold and expressive artwork as she uses the descriptive language to draw boy and dog. Perfect for pre-schoolers and emerging readers, That's My Dog is a little treasure of a book and a story kids will want to enjoy again and again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite book for every child.
This is a very imaginative and beautiful tale. I really thank the author for writing this adorable and tender story in poem.It explores the beauty of nature and to emphasize the prettiest things in life like having a friend. I would love to have a dog too, like Francisco does. But I cannot have one because I live in an apartment and I do not have patio so he would run around. I felt identified with Francisco and his urgency to have a pet. This was also very funny reading about the little prairie dog's thoughts towards Francisco, because he sees Francisco as a pet. For "Amigo" it is very funny to hear how humans talk. I think this book would be a favorite book for a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever
My 7-year-old son has loved this book since it was first read to him at age 3. It is beautifully written -- a real pleasure to read aloud! -- and its message is wonderful: one can live with, respect and love Nature'screatures without having to own them! Garth Williams' illustrations areterrific, too, of course. Like the other reviewer, reading this book cancause me to cry, especially as I near its lovely ending. Get this book andtake the time to read it to an attentive child. And check out Baylor'sother titles; she's got the right idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a dry eye in the house!!!
I read this book to both of my children and remember barely being able tokeep from crying. It is truly a wonderful, heart warming story of a poorMexican boy whose only pet was a praire dog. It is written in simple andpoetic verse. If this book doesn't make your children think about thebeautifully simple pleasures of life then nothing will. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
My son and I love this book! The illustrations are beautiful and wonderfully detailed. This book is on regular rotation in our Bedtime story book collection. 5-0 out of 5 stars Tracks, tracks everywhere but who are the animals who make?
This was an excellent book! The illustrations are bright and beautiful coupled with a magnificant story. Each set of footprints are shown in their natural environment and they are accompanied by a full page of clues that start hard and get easier before you are shown the animal that the clues are about. Here is an example. "I need to run fast because many animals hunt my kind. I will zig-zag to make it hard to catch me, then dash into the bushes to escape". Then there are more clues until finally the last clue is "My white, puffy tail is another clue to who I am." Of course by reading the clues you start to figure out by this time that you are talking about a Rabbit. This book really helped me to understand more about the eco-system I am surrounded by. When we go outside I am more observant and can even share show some of the tracks I learned to my sisters, Merlyn and Shirley. Be sure to get this book! ... Read more

I have collected each book as it was published. I love the stories, and especially the illustrations, which seem to be done with real Westies as models because the expressions and body positions are so true to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Writer and Illustrator Duo
The McDuff series lovingly recreates a small New England town of the late 1940''s or early `50's. The frontispiece shows a neighborhood of gables two and three-story house, some with curved roofs, masonry, and picket fences, all with tall chimneys nearly touching the treetops. It's immediately welcoming. When we meet a cute (!), big-eyed, white terrier, our hearts are completely won over. McDuff is a dog's dog: He's got a nose for food, a watchful eye, and he's full of terrier energy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Our Daughter's New Favorites
A friend bought our two year-old "McDuff's New Friend" for Christmas, and we all liked it so much that we went out and bought this set of the earlier stories, too. These are beautifully illustrated little books, and the small format versions are perfect for our toddler's hands. McDuff is charming, and his adventures are told with an economy and subtle humor that parents can appreciate as much as the little ones. We read all three of these every day, and none of us have gotten tired of them yet. 5-0 out of 5 stars AS CUTE AND AS SWEET AS IT GETS!
If you love darling little fluff-muffin dogs, it doesn't get any better than this! The cute purse-like container has McDuff's sweet face on it. Inside are three of the best McDuff books, plus stickers. Any kid would LOVE this. I bought one for myself, it was so darn cute and reminded me so much of my own precious terrier. This is the present I'm going to give every small child from now on. The illustrations of McDuff are absolutely on the mark: This illustrator REALLY knows what terriers are like--their poignant, wistful looks; the way they hold their bodies; and a million other endearing characteristics. Also, children are sure to be stimulated by these wonderfully simple but thought-provoking and unsentimental little stories about, for example, how McDuff gets jealous over a new baby, and how McDuff gets lost but finds his way home. All of the McDuff books are absolutely top-notch. They will warm your heart! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Dog Training
This book might be old, but it is very helpful. I use it to train all my dogs and some of them are very well behaved. (It even works with stubborn breeds!). DTFK tells about housebreaking, obedience training, tricks, and problem solving. The methods work and the dogs like them. If you get a dog, please buy this book too. Read it cover to cover before you begin with your dog's training, though.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date techniques
The latest version of this book is from 1988 and the book uses lots of traditional, but largely out of date corrections that have been replaced in most obedience training circles with postitive training techniques.I have elected to return the book instead of having my niece learn these dog obedience techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Incredible Egg
I was immediately drawn to the beautiful artwork of this book. The cover page was so very descriptive. The illustrations throughout the book are wonderful and very little text is needed to complement the art of the pictures. On the discovery of the egg in the henhouse, George takes the egg to his bedroom to keep it warm and safe until it hatches, reading to the egg all the while. George seems to believe that the egg can hear his words and continues to read to the egg. On hatching George continues to read to the dragon before bed each night after training the dragon during the day in dragonly characteristics. Reading plays an important part in the book, and is a good example to be setting for young people enjoying this book. The storyline and most especially the beautiful illustrations make this a really fantastic book for the young adventurer. All that is needed is an imagination and a sense of adventure to enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful illustrations and a fun story
The Egg has some of the most beautiful drawings I have seen in a modern children's book.Even I found myself caught up in them.4-0 out of 5 stars Mystical Wings
In all the books I have read, there has only been a few that have captured my attention and actually held it. But I have found what I have come to call a books soul or in simpler terms a books meaning.Yes this book was probably written for a young person, to put them to sleep or to just keep them occupied. But to a dragon lover this book is much more. It is in a way a ticket to another world.A world in which the imagination can be free to explore the deepest and darkest corners of the universe without being restrained by reality. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hideous! My 2nd grader is in tears over this stupid book
If you are of the mind that it is in a child's best interest to expose them to as much pain, loss and sadness at as young an age as possible . . .you will LOVE this book. The title, the cute illustrations -- including the adorable cover art -- and the easy reading level (I'd say grade 2) make it irresistable for youngsters. It's the CONTENT that makes it an awful choice.
