2-0 out of 5 stars has a buddhist slant
This book is okay, except the conclusion where you imagine yourself deeply interconnected to everyone else and how everyone is God may leave you feeling uncomfortable.Do you have to be deeply interconnected to someone you really can't bear to think about?Like the bully at school who's been terrorizing you? That idea would drive me nuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Answer to a Tough Question
I wish this book had been available when my children were small; I definitely would have read it to them. The next best thing is to give a copy to my 6 month old grandson for the startup of his library. I can't think of a better answer to a child'squestion, "what is God?", than this book presents... nor can I think of a better answer for any adult wondering the same thing. The question is a universal one and so is Etan Boritzer answer.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Book
Over the years, people have asked me what books I recommend for children on the subject of God and religion, even requesting that I myself write children's books.Although I have read several good books on the subject over the years, other than "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" I have not been able to come up with any at the spur of the moment. That inspiring book, however, is not specifically about God and religion, and is also geared for an older audience.

2-0 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion
First, I want to say that I have NOT read this book;I have some commentsbased on its table of contents.I teach research methods in education, andhave served on over a hundred dissertation committees in education andother fields (including several dissertations in psychology), and I wouldnot use or recommend this book primarily because of its extremely limitedtreatment of qualitative research.Despite the book cover's claim that thebook deals with "the entire range of research methodologies inpsychology", the coverage of qualitative methods appears to be limitedto one chapter on naturalistic and case-study methods.(A second chapterwhich deals with field research in fact seems to focus onquasi-experimental and single-subject designs, which are not qualitative.) The rest of the book is heavily quantitative/experimental in its approach(there are three chapters on experimental design alone). It seemsrevealing that although there are sections on the limitations ofnaturalistic and case study research and correlational and differentialresearch, there is no explicit section on the limitations of experimentalresearch. There is also no discussion of one of the most commonqualitative approaches used in psychology--the qualitative interview study, which is different from a "case study".(For more on thisapproach, I recommend "Learning from Strangers:The Art and Method ofQualitative Interview Studies", by the psychologist RobertWeiss.)5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent text with great web + cd support
I decided to adopt this text for my course as it is comprehensive, up-to-date, and includes a wealth of supplementary materials that are web-based, as well as available on the accompanying CD.Recommended highlyfor undergrad AND graduate students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good baseline book for those preparing for a dissertation
As a Ph.D. student that is about to start my dissertation I found thisbook extremely helpful in wading through the various research and analysismethods.Filled with examples (although principally focused onPsychology), the book has helped me plan my dissertation.A greatreference book and in my opinion a must have for those who are about tostart their dissertation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brings abnormal psychology to life
This is an excellent collection of case studies that illustrate the various classes of mental disorders. It is a useful addition to courses on psychopathology.Although most abnormal psychology texts have a few case studies, it is helpful to have even more examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to Write and Spell, Guido!

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook
This book is a favorite in my classroom. The children enjoy the content as well as the illustrations. Last year I tied this book into the theme of my classroom, which was: "Philosophy - Love of Wisdom."

5-0 out of 5 stars a remarkable book
This book is for anyone who likes to ask questions, questions, questions and more questions. It taps into the childlike love of questioning that we are all born with but that so many of us lose (or lose touch with) as we get older and have answers crammed down us.[Some adults have] lost the ability to understand what it's like to cultivate your sense of wonder. But children (and all those adults who still love to question and explore) will take to this book quickly and cherish it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Profound thoughts for young minds
I am eager to try this book with some of my classes, but I haven't used it yet.I like the format - first he takes you through a discussion of a particular question and then he asks a lot of related questions.I have been looking for a book that would help children explore significant questions about their world. This may help. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Chockful of thought-provoking selections
When we think of Transcendentalism, we first turn to Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. But the literary movement was made up of more personalities than just those two men; and while "Nature" and "Walden" are key writings, they're not the only examples anyone can or should read.Hence the need and attraction of any transcendental anthology: it brings us multiple voices, perhaps even some unfamiliar or unusual ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I got this book from the library and was reading it with my daughter.
4-0 out of 5 stars great introduction to natural selection
I'm always on the look-out for engaging, informative books on the development of life on earth. My kids and I have actually read quite a few of them.I consider this book one of the better ones for young kids.It does not speak down to kids, nor is it too complicated. The illustrations are Eric Carle-esque with their paper designs and interesting to young ones.
4-0 out of 5 stars debunking creation
I bought this book because my 7-year-old has learned to say hi to Jesus when he passes by a church (thanks to grandma). He stopped believing in Mother Nature and I wanted to nip religious fanaticism in the bud. This book worked! It is beautifully illustrated, interesting, and full of cool facts. It furthered our discussions about creation vs. evolution and since my son is a lover of dinosaurs, he is on his way to scientific allegiance. I highly reccommend it to any parent who wants to teach children about the history of the earth and to unteach insipid mythology. *Although I must warn, it has quite a bit of writing and big words for young children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Lessons in Critical Thinking
This book is the best thing for kids since peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were invented. It is illustrated, amusing, and fun to read even for adults. It's a complete short course in how to think, and how not to be fooled. Its advice applies to evaluating advertising, pseudoscientic claims, and what your teachers tell you. Hey, kids! Grownups can be wrong! Kids are encouraged not to accept everything they hear at face value; it is empowering to kids to know that they can use their own "baloney detectors." BUY IT! For your children, your grandchildren, to donate to the nearest school or library, or to read for yourself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful
Bought it for my grandson and am keeping it and getting another for him.It is simple enough for children and informative enough for anyone with an interest in hands.Very well put together, with lots of information and a positive approach.I recommend it for anyone with any interest in reading hands or learning about yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!
This is the best book for people who no nothing about palmistry! Its a really great book. This is a very sweet fun book. It is a quick guide to palmistry and so you can have a basic understanding of it. Vernon Mahabal has done a great job! Thumbs up A+++++ ^_^

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Adults, Too!
I bought this book for my 11 year old cousin, which I guess is the "recommended" age for this book, but I got a lot out of it, as well. It's not as if adults understand palmistry, simply by virtue of being adults, so 'big people' will find this interesting, too. The book doesn't come off as "babyish," and the author doesn't insult the intelligence of, or write condescendly to kids. The diagrams in it are simple and it's easy to see what what's being indicated when the different points are being featured. I think if you buy this for the young person in your life, you'll end up reading it, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Confucius: The Golden Rule
Confucius was a minor government official who desperately wanted to change the government of China. But because of his radical ideas, he was never given the opportunity. He became a scholar who taught his pupils to think. Many years after his death, his ideas were written down and have survived for thousands of years.Tidbits of Confucius's wisdom have even made their way into American fortune cookies.Because little is known of the fifth century B.C. scholar, Freedman makes an effort to establish what information is believed to be fact and what is more likely legend.5-0 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Confucius.....
"More than 2,500 years have passed since Confucius walked the dusty country roads of China, chatting with his disciples, yet his voice still rings clear and true down through the centuries. Those who knew him never forgot him. Those who came after handed down his sayings from one generation to the next, right up to our own time..."So begins Russell Freedman's brilliant and engaging biography of Confucius, a minor government official who desperately wanted to be a political force in ancient China."Though he offered many bold ideas for reform, his advice was ignored by the rulers of the day.For this reason, he spent much of his time teaching and discussing his ideas with his students."His simple, yet profound thoughts about government, education, and religion were shared with his followers through conversations and dialogues, and finally written down, many years after his death, in a book that has come to be known as the Analects."This slim volume is the one source where we can most clearly hear the unique voice of the real, living Confucius."Mr Freedman's well researched story is written in an easy to read, conversational style and filled with history, mystery, intriguing biographical details, quotes from the Analect, and fascinating fun facts.Frederic Clement's elegant and evocative Chinese-style illustrations look ancient and authentic, and are rich in emotion, color, and detail.Together word and art bring the great philospher and his times to life on the page. With an enlightening Author's Note, and informative sources and suggestions for further reading included at the end, Confucius: The Golden Rule is an entertaining and inspiring introductory biography that is sure to whet the appetite of kids 10 and older, and send them out looking for more."And so, after twenty-five centuries, the pros and cons of what Confucius said or didn't say are still being debated. The reason isn't hard to find.He trusted people to think for themselves. He was always ready to offer suggestions, but he insisted that each of us must find answers for ourselves. And he admitted that he himself did not know the truth, only a way to look for it..." ...
