4-0 out of 5 stars Socrates
Socrates, who was born in Athens, Greece 550 B.C., was considered a prominent and respectful philosopher of the time. The author brought the liveliness of Socrates and his many accomplishments into understanding passages. From birth to unfair death sentences, he accomplished more than anybody of that time. For instance, his meticulous views on intelligence (represented by a tree of many branches.) He also held influence on mathematics, including geormetry and alegbra. Then, to the accused contradictory views on the church, Socrates was sentenced to death. Expressing his ideas and sincere thoughts about life and religion, it was enough to put this brilliant life above many others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's best guide
I'd say it's one of the best books out there for beginners. It takes controversial topics that are abtruse to neophytes and explains it in a simple, unbiased manner - always allowing two sides to argue the subject to the best of their abilities, neither lacking.I felt the chapter about God really covered the logic and ideas behind both sides; atheists and theists. In fact, for anyone I have met that shows interest in philosophy I recommend this book and The Story of Philosophy by Bryan Magee. This is one of the best books I know for beginners, though Bryan Magee's book is more for the intermediate, seeing as how it takes a short look at the studies, teachings and history of key philosophers throughout history, such as Plato, Socrates, Machavelli, Newton, etc. in a chronological order.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Philosophy Rocks is the book that got me intrested in philosophy. I like the things Stephen Law talks about and brings up. The only problem is he never gives a personal opinion on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining and educational
This really is a remarkable book. There's absolutely nothing else like it. I bought it for my fourteen year old son and ended up reading it myself. We both love it. I'm a philosophy graduate and am astonished at how easily Law gets the big ideas across. Martians and monsters, wacky thought experiments, lots of different characters. If you want your kids to learn how to think for themselves, this is the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to Socrates, the philosopher who knew nothing (except he loved to dance)
Trying to explain the life and philosophy of Socrates to young students is a rather daunting task, so M.D. Usher decides to paint the Greek philosopher as a "Wise Guy."He is aided and abetted in this effort by the illustrations of William Bramhall, who is best known for the children's book "Hepcat."Usher and Bramhall get out attention by starting off with Socrates' famous declaration, "All I know is that I know nothing."This has to do with being a Sophist, which is not exactly the same as being a sophist (the first is a school of philosophy while the second refers to teachers), both of which have to do with being a wise man, which, of course, gets us back to the title of the book, "Wise Guy: The Life and Philosophy of Socrates."
5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental Socrates for Children
Excellent overview of who Socrates was, his life, and his way of thinking.I have read this to my two sons (5/9) and they both enjoyed it (text and artwork).Socrates is at the foundation of western thinking and philosophy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classical Homeschool Resource!
Homeschoolers will want WISE GUY on their bookshelf. Our family loved it and it was a great introduction to Socrates for our 9 and 12 year old.Younger children will enjoy the great illustrations and gentle story about Socrates while older students, adults included, will learn more historical information about ancient times.Usher and Bramhall combined these elements creatively and made a great family book to re-visit as the family grows.A greatfind for our homeschool! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Seriously scratches the surface
This book uses a monumentally biographical way to sum up what we know of philosophy.Individuals sometimes possess great charm, and being able to think better, faster, more, etc. than anyone else can be quite attractive.Unfortunately, we live in such a comic society that philosophy can only maintain its seriousness by sneaking off into a corner where it pays as little attention to everything else as possible.A quick comparison with how popular fun things like a song by The Cars called `You Might Think' could be, or used to be, in the case of The Cars, shows how this book approaches philosophers the way a humorous rock 'n' roll song attempts to capture its listeners:
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction or Refresher
Stokes presents a brief introduction to his chosen panoply of 100 influential Western thinkers, from Ancient Greece to the present. A concise (about one page per philosopher) and informative read, well suited as an introduction to the ideas and schools of thought of these major figures. At times Stokes seems to slip his own assumptions and preference into the fabric of his assessments (for instance he seems to personally defend Sartre's existentialist conclusions). Of course, this is not in and of itself bad and Stokes does not make any claim to try for some sort of perfect objectivity. Whether or not Stokes' own views and affinities color his presentation should be no problem to the reader who plans on learning from more than one source (which is always a good idea). While reading this book it has been interesting to see how each philosopher begins his own progression of thought with certain assumptions. Subsequent thinkers who agree with certain aspects of another's philosophy, but disagree with the conclusions of that philosopher, merely need to alter certain foundational assumptions---sometimes it seems in order to support an already reached conclusion. What underlies the assumptions that cause philosophers to choose or reject certain ideas? Stokes' presentation makes this question stand out, for you merely have to turn the page and there is another great philosopher finding an earlier thinkers ideas "acceptable" or "unacceptable" as a statement of fact without much explanation as to why. It is in this way an introductory book such as this may well spur a likely candidate on to further study in philosophy. Overall: A good introduction as well as a good source for a quick brain refresh on famous philosophers' ideas and works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does What It Says It Does
Philip Stokes traces -- quickly, succinctly, and always in a page-and-a-half -- exactly why each philosopher included in "100 Essential Thinkers" has earned a place in the book's pages. While the text is perfect for a quick brush-up on famous names throughout history you know you should know but you can't ever remember exactly why (or exactly what they did or said), it is just that -- a primer, a relatively painless refresher, but far from a comprehensive account of each individual. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, mostly because of the tone and layout of the entries on each thinker -- Stokes has a gift for summing up the thrust of complicated philosophical preponderances in lightning-quick, lucid and polemic-free prose. He also begins each little article with an interesting blurb or quotation from the thinker, and provides a picture, painting, etching or sculpture. All this makes it easier to anchor the person, usually described only in terms of their abstract ideas, more firmly in your mind.(Democritus looks wasted, for example, and Whitehead lives up to his name...and wait until you see the push-broom moustache on Neitzsche...)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Distinct Ideas !!!!
Decartes would approve! This book is a wonderful introduction to philosophy for kids and young adults alike.I don't think that it is too much for kids 5-8; our 7 year old reads it and comes to us with new knowlege and questions to accompany. I would recommend it to anyone intersted in inspiring their kids to think about the world around them in new ways and to further their understanding of some of the greatest figures in history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and simple
I think this might be a little difficult for four-to-eight-year olds, but it does give a clear and simple overview of the ideas of the great philosophers. There were a few typos, and the various type sizes were distracting. Each section begins with a full-page drawing of a particular philosopher and his milieu with callouts. The callouts are the part that might appeal to the four-to-eight-year olds. Many of them are quite silly.

5-0 out of 5 stars How'd They Do It?
I just wonder what the publisher thought when the idea of an overview of philosophy for young people was first proposed. Luckily, they must not have been paying much attention because this extraordinary book is in print. It's really amazing that they could pull this book off. How do you explain what the great thinkers throughout history have thought to teenagers and younger? Somehow, Jeremy Weate was able to break down philosophies to their most basic forms. Weate was also aided by his sense of humor and by the pictures of Peter Layman which can help keep interest from swaying. This really is a very valuable resource. This book is supposed to be directed toward readers of the ages 4-8, but I think it is better for a little older audience. I was able use it very effectively in some college English courses I took in high school. A Young Person's Guide to Philosophy is really excellent. It is really an interesting read and can be very useful. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars No mention of library databases
I saw no mention of databases such as InfoTrac/Gale and EBSCOHost that are extremely important in research these days. These popular online tools are called "aggregated databases" in the APA handbook and "library subscription databases" in the MLA handbook. The omission of this format is unacceptable, in my opinion. I am selecting books on citation styles for my library, and this one will certainly NOT be among the ones I choose!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a really good book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and complete.
This book will tell you exactly how to conduct an action research project in your school or classroom. It takes you through ever step of the process and describes how reports and papers should be presented. It presents a variety of ideas for data and data collection, and describes how to analyze qualitative data.the most important chapter for me was the chapter that described how to use action research for a thesis or disertation. The author describes what would go into each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for students and practitioners
Teachers, administrators, human service personnel are often encouraged to be engaged in action research. However, obtaining a sound, thorough but readable text to assist such professionals in conducting action research has been very difficult. This book fills this void wonderfully. The book lays out the steps of action research, provides practical examples all in a way that is scholastically sound but engaging and interesting reading. No mean feat for any book on research! I would highly recommend this for working practitioners and for guides for students involved in masters and even doctoral projects associated with action research. An excellent resource!!

5-0 out of 5 stars practical, well-written, concise.
Finally, a book about action research that gets right to the point. It provides a good overview of action research in the context of other research paradigms. It describes many very simple and practical methods for collecting data.It can be used with a thesis or dissertation as well as short research projects. ...
