5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle ofyour Child's Birth will Stir Your World
I know that some reviewers feel that this book is exaggerated, unrealistic and that it gives a false perception to children that they are more special than they actually are, but you know what? I don't care. I read the good and bad reviews before ordering it and decided to go ahead anyway. I'm glad I did! The coming of my child may not have stirred anyone else's world but it sure stirred my husband's and mine. When I looked into his beautiful little eyes mine couldn't stop running, and when his little face touched my cheek my heart skipped a beat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, true and spiritual
On the day you were born, the universe rose up to greet you. Share the awe and wonder of life with your precious one. A simple expression of profound truth. A beautiful birthday gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
I have given this book to many new parents, and with all due respect to the reviewer below, not one has observed that it wasn't realistic. This book is poetry, not geography, not climatology, not anthropology.POETRY...And what's wrong with the idea of a super-happy planet rejoicing at the birth of every new baby? That's how it should be.I applaud the author for dreaming big. This gift will be well received.Don't hesitate. ... Editorial Review

Most children are captivated by snow, but how many go on to make it theirlifework? This beautiful biography, winner of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells this tale with simple, graceful prose that will engage children's imaginations. Edifying and snowflake-scattered sidebars offer more information about Bentley's methods and snowflake science. The artwork of Mary Azarian, whose 19th-century hand-press illustrations decorate the charming Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story
Snowflake Bentley tells the delightful story of Wilson Bentley, a man who spent his entire life photographing snowflakes. He lived in Vermont his whole life, a place where snow is as common as dirt, but yet, he was still able to see its marvelous beauty. Children will love reading this book about a topic everyone finds pleasure in, plus they will be inspired by the life of Snowflake Bentley.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Bentley and his somewhat odd profession
This book elegantly portrays the life of a rather eccentric man who spent his entire life studying and photographing snowflakes. The artwork is very complementary to his life's story, which is purposefully written with children in mind as the readers. There is enough information available about his life that an entire unit of study can be developed around the themes of winter and snow.Cross-curricular activities can be expanded to other content areas such as Social Studies and Science.I am a teacher and I use this book in conjunction with William Bentley's book of his actual snowflake photos entitled "Snow Crystals".The students learn a lot about snow and about the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a unique and wonderful story
I love finding a children's book with a true story. Kids are bombarded with fiction and silliness all day long (which is wonderful in its own right), but it's such a treat to share a true story with children. Bentley's passion for something so child-friendly as snow inspires great feeling in children and adults alike. The book's detailed woodcut illustrations are beautiful in their own right. Buy this and then go out and buy Bentley's book of Snow Crystals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The combo of poetry/photos will make your heart ache.
Walker Evans' photos speak volumes without any poetry alongside them but Cynthia Rylant did a superb job of complementing the photos with her gritty observations.I bought this book several years ago and have read itnumerous times since. Just looking at his brutally honest snapshots of thehard times (supposedly) gone by was worth the books' price but just as youthink you've absorbed all the beauty his photographs hold, you look over toread her accompanying poem and your heart aches a little more! This bookis beautiful and moving - there are really no other words to describe it! It truly makes one relate to and hurt for the suffering/troubles of thepeople in the photos. And, one should always keep in mind, just becausethe photos were taken so long ago doesn't mean there aren't still people inthe grip of poverty (& classism, suffering, depression, etc.)just asbadly as the people whose images were captured in Evans' photos so manyyears ago.I've not really done that great a job explaining just howmoving this book is but I guarantee you'll find it both gripping andtouching and you'll laugh, cry, and get angry. Definitely a classic worthadding to your library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cama cama cama, cama chameleon
The concept of photography as an art is finally coming into its own.Once reluctant art centers are placing their Edward Westons alongside their Claude Monets. As recently as 2004 the very first Caldecott Honor was given to a picture book that contained photography in some way (it was "Knuffle Bunny" by Mo Willems). And Joy Cowley has singlehandedly reinvented the notion of the photographic picture book.Having begun this process with "Red-Eyed Tree Frog" (a title that National Geographic Press must feel they should've gotten first dibs on), Cowley has once again paired with photographer extraordinaire Nic Bishop with the multi-colored and magnificent, "Chameleon, Chameleon".Until these last two books, the notion of a fictional photographic tale has never been properly realized ("Stranger In the Woods" by Carl R. Sams does NOT count). Now all that has changed and Cowley & Bishop can be commended for formenting an entirely new genre in the picture book oeuvre. No small task.

4-0 out of 5 stars Debunks some of the myths about wolves
Even though nearly everyone has a close association with domesticated wolves, there is a common and unwarranted hysteria about them. This unwarranted thought process has led to them being reviled by many and hunted to near extinction. Plans by wildlife managers to re-introduce them into places like Yellowstone Park have met with strong and at times irrational resistance. This book is designed to set the record straight and to show wolves as they truly are.

This work is perhaps the most complete and enjoyable children's book ever written about one of the nation's most fascinating and important figures, Abraham Lincoln. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great history book and great biography book
This medium-sized illustrated book on the life of Abraham Lincoln covers the private and public life of one of America's greatest presidents. The book gives good balance to the different stages of Lincoln's life; including his youth, childhood education, teenage years, early days as a country lawyer, entrance into local politics, his marriage, and finally his rise to the presidency and his death. The book does not concentrate on the Civil War, but instead gives a full picture of the man, including his personal traits such as love of storytelling, good humor, and ability to win over people given enough time.Overall, a great book for students in middle school or early high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review of Lincoln a Photobiography
This book is all about Abraham Lincoln from living in the backwoods to the Presidency and the assassination. Before Lincoln became President he was a lawyer and a State and U.S. Congressman. He married Mary Ann Todd and they had four boys.He was a member of the Whig Party until 1856 when he switched to the Repuplican Party. He was elected President in 1860 and ledthe Union to victory over the Confederates in the Civil War.He was shot by John Wilkes Booth on April 14,1856. He was watching the play My American Cousin at Ford's theater. The next day he died in a boarding house across the street.I give this book five stars because it was an awesome book. I learned a lot about Lincoln and life in the 1800's. Russell Freedman packed the book with a bunch of interesting facts that kept me reading. It wasn't just about Lincoln. It was also about the Civil War and political issues. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about history, Presidents and likes to read biographies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great history book for preteens and teens
I bought this book for my son's 11th birthday. He's always been interested in President Lincoln because they have the same birthday (albeit different years!). This book was the last present he opened - after the gameboy, the new game, and several other books. The gameboy went on the table and the book came out. He read for nearly an hour, occasionally stopping to fill me in on tidbits from the book. The book is very interesting reading, even for adults, and is written in such a way to capture the reader's interest from the beginning. I would highly recommend it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
Photography Guide For Kids is a slim, informative, quick read for kids who like to take creative pictures. I bought this for my son who is ten years old and has been snapping shots since he got his first Fisher Price camera when he was five. I noticed his interest in photography when he would ask to go for walks to test out his new camera on fenced in dogs barking at him and the buses going by. He read this book front to back in two days and took from it a bit more of an understanding in capturing mood, speed and creative portraits in different ways. I read this book myself and found it easy to understand the explanations on different cameras, film speed and black and white photos. Although not really a learning tool, I do feel this is a helpful guide to open up the minds of children interested in taking pictures. And the fact it's not a large text book, and is written on an age appropiate level makes it a good start for children who may not think they can learn all there is to learn about photography and may motivate them to capture their own memories and feelings in a creative way. And maybe they'll give the Nintendo a break. ... Read more
