5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
My granddaughter loved the explanations about autism in this book. She is 9, and it is written where she can understand more about the behaviors of her brother with autism. She was even going to take it to school for her teacher to read, and some of her classmates. Many adults would benefit from reading it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars MARCHING TO YOUR OWN DRUMMER
This is an excellent teaching tool that paves the way towards acceptance of persons who display autistic behavior.Autism and its related neurobiological condition, Asperger's are spectrum conditions.Common spectrum behaviors include a myriad of sensory issues such as strong aversions for loud noises; strong reactions to certain smells and tastes and distinctive speaking styles. Many spectrum behaviors overlap and Asperger's, while considered at the higher end of the autism spectrum does indeed share common neuro-sensory ground with autism.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for discussion purposes
My 8 year old daughter was just recently diagnosed with AS and so I began a search for a variety of books to read myself and read along with my daughter.I chose this one, hoping it would give her something she could relate to.Reading along with her, it served to be a great tool for discussion. In addition, I plan on bringing it with me to the school as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
This book is a good place to start. It has very remedial information on how Asperger's Syndrome (AS) appears to others. In this way it can be informative to those who don't have AS (why is he doing that?) as well as to those who have AS (how am I different?).The book is very short and only seeks to explain the perceptions and actions of a person with AS.It does a very good job of not condemning the behavior, merely pointing out that it is sometimes outside of the norm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource for teachers who have students with different learning capabilities in their classrooms. It helps explain to other children that people are different, and see the world through different lenses. "This is Asperger's Syndrome" tells a child's life situation, from his eyes. I have used it in my classroom to help my students understand what it is like to be different. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Tool for Self Exploration, Self Awareness and Self Advocacy
This is a wonderful workbook in which adolescents with AS can explore and embrace their own unique needs. The worksheets and concepts are very clear and pave the way for the adolescent with AS to gain critical insight into themselves and then problem solve, and plan accordingly.I HIGHLY recommend this book. The concepts and strategies can be easily adapted for use with all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 10 Star Help for those with AS!
This excellent book is clear, well thought out,and easy to use. Those challenged by AS are presented with opportunities for self exploration and an understanding of what AS is and how it might be effecting their lives. They are encouraged, validated, and this interactive workbook helps THEM come out with solutions!!! As a parent I can't recommend this book enough! 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE if your child to going to the hospital
When my son was going to have tubes put in his ears and his Adnoids removed, we purchased this book.He was just barely 3 years old, but this book explained on HIS level everything that was going to happen to him (from the little boy's ear first hurting, to everything that happens at the hospital before and after the surgery).
4-0 out of 5 stars Bright and cheery for very young readers
This book is about a boy who goes into the hospital for a one night stay after an ear operation. The pictures and words are bright, cheery and comforting to young readers. My daughter liked to read this book evenafter her hospital stay.It was written in England so it shows hospitalscenes (like children in group wards) which didn't apply to my daughtersstay.I pointed out differences between what would and did happen to her. A good book to show a very young child what going to the hospital will belike and that it isn't as scary as it might seem. ... Read more

I like the picture book. It's Helen Keller.Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia Alabama.A girl would like this book if they bought it.6 years old, 6 1/2.I thought I was back in Helen Keller's year.-- Written by Meg, age 5 1/2

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for small children
No, it isn't the full biography of her life that one might expect to find in an adult level book. But, I think it is pretty obvious that it is a picture book.As such, it is perfect for small children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic Information?
I must take issue with the last reviewer. This book provides no basic information about Helen Keller. In fact, in this version, Keller doesn't even graduate from college. How would you like your own productive life of 88 years reduced to your pre-college days?Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A misguided attempt
This book is subtitled, a first look at disability. I ask this though; wouldn't kids get a much better first look across the lunch table at their neighbourhood school? I'm not sure why authors think that we need all of these books to teach us about disability, It seems like an n out-of-date notion to me. Give us an engaging storyline not a medical lesson. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Preschool and Elementary School Teachers
"Seeing Color: It's My Rainbow, Too" is a wonderful introduction to Color Vision Deficiency (CVD). Before reading this book, I had the false assumption that CVD was the same as being colorblind. Was I ever wrong! I learned more in this short volume than I had anticipated. The author, Arlene Evans, has taken very difficult information and broken it down for people of all ages to understand.
4-0 out of 5 stars An accurate insight into a challenging condition
Most of us take the ability to see color for granted, but for those affected by color vision deficiency (CVD) life can be challenging. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Educational
Adults and kids alike can learn a lot about "color blindness" (or, really, "color vision deficiency/CVD") by reading this book. It's written in a clear, friendly way and yet doesn't skimp on the details.Reading it, I learned so much about living with CVDs.I also learned the scientific information about how we see (or don't see) color.I think kids of all ages, parents, teachers, and medical professionals would benefit from, and enjoy, this book.Cute illustrations, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I read one of the books about Helen Keller when I was nine years old, and I was hooked, at that age I could not put the book down, I actually memorized, taught myself the hand sign chart in the back of the book. I highly recommend this book.I am purchasing this book for my niece for Christmas, she loves to read. When you think you been short-cutted in life, read this. Then ask your self do you have it that bad?

4-0 out of 5 stars The dealf, blind, and mute girl.
Helen Keller had a bad illness when she was only nineteen mouths old.She lived, but the illness left her blind, deaf, and mute.At the age of five her mom and dad wrote a school that has blind and deak kids there.A teacher came and didn't get along with Helen at first, but later thay become the best of friends. This is a good book for anyone who would like to know what it is like to be blind, or deaf or even both at the same time. This is a relly good book and I think that anyone who will read it will like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helen Keller
...It's about a girl that is blind, deaf, and dumb. (As in can't talk) But later when she got a teacher named Anne Sullivan, she learned to do lots of things. When Helen was ten years old, she learned to talk. But still could not hear. I learned that if you are blind, deaf, or dumb, you could still do lots of things. I think you would like this book too.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest answers to good questions about blindness
Kids sure ask better questions than adults a lot of the time!Good thing that Mrs Alexander is prepared to answer them in an informative way.4-0 out of 5 stars Learn About Blindness
Author Sally Hobart Alexander does remember the color blue because she lost her sight completely at age 26.In this book, she answers 13 questions children have asked her about going blind.Alexander's honesty and wit discussing how she met her husband, ways her two sighted children played tricks on her and how she handles day to day activities, allows the reader to understand how a blind person lives a happy, fulfilling life. A good choice for a 4th or 5th grader. Included in this book is an activity, "What does it feel like to be blind?"also a note about blindness, a list of resources and an index. The black and white photographs of Alexander, her family and innovative gadgets are set on black, white or gray backgrounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Parallel Universe
You know that you're not supposed to be nosey and ask questions about someone's disability. But Sally Hobart Alexander, the author of this book, travels around the country giving talks to people about her experience with her blindness. She invites, and receives, a lot of questions from childrenand teens, and in this book she tries to answer some of them.In somerespects, it is a very satisfying book, because it calls attention to themillions of little details of ordinary life that usually require eyesight. How do you know what's in the refrigerator? How do you know what clothesmatch? Many of us don't consider that you need to face the person you aretalking to, or where to extend our hands for a handshake. Because Alexanderwas not born blind (she lost her sight gradually over two years, when shewas in her twenties), she is aware of all of the differences, and she isgenerous in sharing her experiences. But this is not just a book aboutthe details of living without sight. This book also shares some of theemotional experience of losing vision--the frustration, disappointment, andanger Alexander had to work through. And then the positive feelings oftriumph, as she learned that happiness and success do not depend on theability to see with your eyes. Basically an upbeat, interesting story, Ifound the writing a little weak. But I would recommend this book stronglyfor anyone who is struggling with any kind of disability, or anyone who issimply curious about blindness, because it is truly inspirational andfrank. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good except for cookie
Each page is a different word with a picture of the item and a drawing of how to do the sign. If a person is in the photo, they are often doing the sign. I am surprised they have a cookie in a book for such young children. Kids this age don't need cookies and it seems unwise to teach them this. We would have told our son the sign means "cracker" except the pictue of the cookie is a gingerbread man. Don't know how we're going to get around that one. Cracker would have been a much better word to include. Had I realized "cookie" was in the book, I wouldn't have bought it. I gave it 4 stars because overall it is a nice book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read to a second grade class
I purchased this book to read to a second grade class. We found out about a month & a half ago that my step-daughter needed hearing aids. This came as a huge surprise to us.Not only did we have to explain all of this to her, but we wanted to teach her classmates what hearing aids are, why she needs them, and how they will help her. This book was perfect! The only issue was that the hearing aid style was outdated (there is no longer a huge box hanging around your neck) but other than that, the book was funny and kept the childrens' attention. It led a discussion and allowed the children to ask my step-daughter sincere questions. No one has made fun of her, and I am told that all of the kids think her hearing aids are 'cool'.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not alone.
As a young woman who grew up with hearing aids, I wish I had a book like this to tell me that I wasn't the only child with hearing aids. I highly recommend educators to have this book in their classroom. I also recommend Living With Deafness by Emma Haughton to support this narrative.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great way to introduce a child to a hearing aid.
