5-0 out of 5 stars Improve your learning and your grades
Physics is a tough subject. One thing students of physics need to do is practice, practice, practice problems. A book with lots of problems and clearly written, detailed solutions is part of the required program. Having used this book myself as a student, I completely recommend to my own students. As always, try to work out the problems yourself before peeking in on the solutions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I'm very impressed; this book has loads of problems with which I can practise. It's simply the best physics problem book ever published!

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Useless
I have attempted numerous times to use examples from this book as guidance when stuck on homework problems assigned in my engineering physics course and have found that the book offers nothing but further frustration. It's unorganized, the typeset is monotonous and appears as if someone typed the book on a typewriter making it difficult to focus and follow the text, and I have yet to find a worked example that has been of any use whatsoever in completing even one of my homework problems.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific way to learn and explain electricity!
When I first opened the book, I thought it would be too young for my nine year old. To my surprise, it caught our attention and explained the puzzling mystery of electricity and currentsin such a way that we both understood how it works. Reading this turned on the light of comprehension. I highly recommend this book to explain the process.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to electricity for children.
I pulled this book out when my 5 year old asked me to explain how a light bulb works. The book addresses this subject and also goes on to explain, in simplist form, what electricity is, where it comes from and how we use itin our daily lives. It includes an easy experiement that shows howelectricity is created. While my child was able to understand most of whatwas addressed, the introduction to atoms, electrons... was probably morethan he needed right now. But the introduction of generators, wires, circuits and how electricity reaches our home was great. The story format, starting with turning on a light switch, kept him interested. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent science source
I have found some factual errors in this book, but overall it is a thorough science book for physics, chemistry, and biology. This book is an unabridged compilation of the three books in the illustrated dictionary series--Illustrated Dictionary of Physics, Illustrated Dictionary of Chemistry, and Illustrated Dictionary of Biology.Even if you are only interested in one of these topics, you still need to be aware of British versions being sold by sellers at Amazon.Unfortunately, they list them as the American version, but they're not. After a few pages of reading the British spelling for words like 'oestrogen', 'foetus', etc., you will be completely frustrated. This is the American edition of all three and a bargain too.We homeschool and use this as one of many science books. For anyone studying Biology, I would also highly recommend the National Geographic movie "In the Womb" which shows a baby developing through all 40 weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever owned
My parents bought me this book in hardcover about ten years ago, and it has been indispensible. It covers a broad enough base of information so well, and with enough depth, that it has been a constant and indispensible reference for me through GCSE science in the UK, high school chemistry in the US, and even sometimes during my undergrad chemistry and physics. The illustrations are wonderful, and the explainations lucid.I would definitely recommend this for anyone with a child in school, or anyone who wants to look at a bit of basic science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant.
About 15 years ago, as a 9 year old, I read the three books that make up this Dictionary of Science (the Biology, Physics and Chemistry ones).I was completely captivated by them, and read them over and over again. The science is pitched at exactly the right level for children: the colourful illustrations and short sections retain a child's attention. I went on to take biology, physics and chemistry A-levels at age 17, and went on to study Medicine at Cambridge University in England.Obviously there was more to this achievement than the Usborne books I read as a child, but I honestly do attribute much of my initial interest to them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Science does fascinate me
Even though I seem to remember being rather distracted in school because I was one of the only girls in the science class. Things have changed now in the modern world.
5-0 out of 5 stars physics today
In todays society, where education should be and is at the forefront, a book of this type will not only captivate a young mind but answer questionwhich may not be readily available to a parent. In education the 5 -14program has developed a system where children can be assessed throughpractical skills and knowledge.A book such as this can and will aid, inthat understanding. In other publications, the author's may have toreminded that their readers are not of the same standard, of understandingas they are, everyone has there own particular way of understanding textand experiments.Books of this nature can only aid, in the development ofa child understanding of science and technology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of the GRE Physics Test
I used this book to prepare for a test in early 2002 and was surprised at the amount of similar questions posed on the actual exam. It's true that ETS recycles many of the test questions each year and the Physics test is no exception. If you are looking strictly for more in-depth test taking strategies then you should consider another book, as for practicing on actual test questions this book wins hands-down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you want to see before the test.
This book neither tells you how to solve the problems nor what knowledge you are expected to have before the test. This book contains only problems and answers. When you think you are ready for the test, this is the book you want to use. This book contains four actual tests and helps you time your exam and get used to the style of the exam.I found "Physics: The Easy Way by Robert L. Lehrman" a good book to review the kind of things asked in GRE physics test.In GRE physics test you are asked a hundred small questions which can be solved almost without calculation. You want to review the essentials and get used to the style of the exam for high score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just the tests
Sadly, this publication by ETS contains nothing but 3 old GRE physicsexams of (presumably) retired questions. The correct answers and thescoring statistics are given, but there is nothing in the way ofexplanation or discussion or strategies for attacking the test.Still, youshould probably get this because its the only place you can get your handson ETS's actual problems.Other books that purport to train you for theGRE often disturbingly misunderstand what kind of things ETS expects you toknow and do on the exam. This book is only helpful if you invest a lot oftime in it, but I still reccommend it highly if you plan on taking thephysics GRE. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful for lower level physics and physical science
I have used the previous edition of this book for years and loved it.I actually use it in my Integrated Physics and Chemistry class. While I don't use every chapter, many of the chapters like motion, force, energy, and electricity are ideal for a lower level physics class. Her questions are cute and funny and the examples prior to the worksheets are IDEAL.They work problems just like the ones in the workbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars A High School Physics Teacher
I used this resource occasionally last year because the text has little in the way of problems involving math.My main complaint is the topics addressed in this workbook are often not explained covered in the text. For example, the workbook topics of static drawings, coefficient of friction, frequency/preiod, and angular quantities. Consequently, the student often has only the brief workbook section introduction (1/2 page) and a sample problem for reference. In my experience this is insufficent.Yes, my students can sometimes step through the problem, but doing so forces the student outside the realm of conceptual physics which is the whole idea of this course.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for college or high school algebra-based physics
Each chapter starts with a two or three page review of the relevant physics. There are many detailed examples neatly worked out. Then there are numerous exercises, often with good real-world relevance. This is nota revolutionary book, but I strongly recommend it to physics teachers andstudents alike. It is a good supplement for any algebra-based physicscourse.A teacher's edition is also available. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Have I just encountered the worst book in all of history?
Quite possibly.
2-0 out of 5 stars 34%*(65)*&##354*#(76^7)(216)=
Exactly. This is what the book looks like if you go to a store right now and open it. This book is virtually a math book although physics is about 60% math and 30% science information, this book is like 95% to 5%. Not only that the explainations for some of the problems are really bad. The reason why people think physics is hard is b/c of books like these that make it hard. THEIR are even mistakes in the formulas they use and they dont round numbers to significant digits. Im the top of my class in physics only b/c i like science, this book can change your mind real fast. The book does not explain who and how which is vital in learnig and passing any science test. For example Isaac Newton proposed the law of gravity. It just tells you concepts and terms that came from nowhere. The only good part about it is webassign that lets you practice problems online. d.

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak book
This book is very colorful and full of wonderful photos. Yet photos and color alone will not help you learn physics. The example problems they give are not explained step-by-step in a way that makes the application clearer. Worse yet the problems may be wrong some of the time. There are a few chapters that could be combined instead of splitting them up. Also, Newton's Laws are totally isolated from each other instead of being grouped together. The only way (at least that I know) to suceed in phyiscs is to work the problems. The book has a wonderful assortment of problems- yet no solutions or even answers are found in the back. Since most physics teachers won't give credit without work I don't see why putting the answers in the back could hurt. Overall the book is weak. I would read this book and do the homework assigned from the book, but my preparation for a test would come from a review book and a practice book with hundreds of solved problems (Schaum's or REA). That seems to work best for me. Oh and the last part in any physics course that determines how good you do is the teacher. For me I am not so lucky. But to you I wish the best of luck. You may have the same problems with this book that my whole class and apparantly other schools have had, or you will do well. ... Read more
