5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Role Model for All Ages
My son was fascinated with the story he read about Robert Goddard in school. He was twelve at the time. I wanted to see how this book portrayed Robert Goddard. I found that Mr. Goddard had the true spirit of adventurewith no age limitations. Now I know why Roger felt that this was a hero andthat dreams can become a reality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I have never read a biography quite as good as this. This book has some of the best descriptions of Newton that I've ever heard: "Like Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin, Isaac Newton was not just an aimlesschildhood tinkerer, but a tinkerer playing with ideas and mechanisms."It has so many interesting details about his life, such as the jumpingcontest at school, or the many different clocks that he made. This bookmade me realize that Newton wasn't just a great scientist, but a politicalfigure as well, with a seat in Parliment, head of the Royal Society, andDirector of the Mint. If it is possible, Cristianson would be my nomineefor the Pulitzer Prize.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a get to know feeling with issac newton
The book, Isaac Newton and the Scientific Revoultion, was a good book beacause it went futher than the inventions and into Isaac Newton, the man. The book showed his public and private fueds with rival scientists. Thebooks also shows his emotions; lots of resenment and hate, love of theunknown, and joy of experinicng life to the fullest. The only bad part ofthe book was it was to fast; it didn't show enough of the discoverery, itraced along to show what happened to Newton after the discovery like hisfame and how it destroyed his rivals. But in the end you feel like you knewNewton and lived in the Scientiic revolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isaac Newton and the scientific revolution is a superb book
This book gives an excellent portrayal of Isaac Newtons life and discoveries. It shows how a childhood dilemma leads to Isaacs will to succeed. It also depicts Newton`s social life with friends such as halleyand John Locke. The book shows his feuds with rival inventors such as JohnFlamsteed. This book deserves 5 star for it depicts Newtons scientificgenius inside his personal world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Prig Newton
I like science in the way that I like foreign cars. It's not something I'd usually focus my brain on, but I'm willing to give it some thought should the need arise. As a child, however, my heroes were not scientists.Scientists, I would have told you, are dull as dishwater human beings who never had a poetic or romantic thought in their lives. They were, for me, the epitome of dull dry brilliance.Trust Kathleen Krull then to write about a fellow who manages to prove my personal stereotypes both right and wrong at the same time. You might be able to make a case for Isaac Newton having never had a romantic thought in his life. But dull?Honey, this guy was so wham-bang whizzing crazy that his mere existence itself makes for a fabulous bio.The "Giants of Science" series has a way of making anyone and everyone it touches look interesting. But with Mr. Newton, it sure doesn't seem like they needed much help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Molly Bang ala Peter Sis' style
If you ever want to freak a kid out (or, in more professional terms, cause a kid to think in a constructive manner) ask them to consider what life would be like without electricity. After some considerations of this awful possibility the child you speak to may have a newfound appreciation for something he or she has always taken for granted before. But where does electricity really come from? How is it made?Author/illustrator Molly Bang has made a graceful departure from her adorable fiction based picture books into that nebulous territory known as non-fiction."My Light" shows the myriad ways in which our own dear Sun has created (either directly or indirectly) the energy we use in our very light bulbs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: MY LIGHT
Haven spoken with Molly Bang at a conference about MY LIGHT, I am familiar with her passion for the subject matter of this book. That passion has paid off, for MY LIGHT is the best overview to energy technologies in print today for elementary and middle school students.Accompanied by vivid and expansive illustrations that each cover a full two page spread, Molly Bang provides logical and understandable progressions linking solar radiation to hydro, wind, fossil fuels, and solar electric production.Four pages of more detailed information, linking to each of the spreads, is provided at the end.
5-0 out of 5 stars My four year old loves this book
The illustrations are artistic and beautiful. My four year oldloves to trace the flow of electricity from its generation to its use, and my two year old likes the pictures. The book may have simplified some scientific principles; nonetheless, it is educational and interesting. It has opened up some discussions about our family's use of energy -not bad for a children's book! For older readers, there is a good afterward which goes into more detail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Faraday's Faith / Ludwig's Style
A remarkable and memorable book! An A+. A 10. I ran across a copy at the Santa Barbara library's donated books for sale shelves and liked the "look" of the book. The size and the "heft", too. I bought it with other books mostly to support the library selling it, :-) but when I got home, I started to read it. It is an amazing read. Mr. Ludwig's style is surprising, different and intriguing. Mr. Ludwig's outlook on Michael Faraday's life and how and why he accomplished what he did, combined in that style, made the unprepossessing book quite a read!I read the whole thing right then and there and found it an amazing reading experience. The envisioning and portraying by Mr. Ludwig of Michael Faraday and Faraday's life, world, era, and beliefs is very, very, special. The overall "portrait" is unforgettable. I do not see this as just a child's or student's book. I see it as an inspiration. I plan to give copies to thoughtful friends and family.Read it. Judge for yourself and pass it on. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly average biography
Based on the glowing review above, I ordered this book hoping to assign it for summer reading for 10th graders who will be studying electricity and magnetism next year.Unfortunately, like many biographies written for high schoolers, the book is clumsily written and fairly boring.Parts of it are written like a fictionalized account, and parts like a biography, with quotes from Faraday's letters. There is little sense of Faraday's experimental method, which is arguably the most interesting aspect of his career.Overall, I'm afraid reading this book would decrease, rather than increase, the students' interest in the subject. So I'm still looking for a good biography of Faraday...

5-0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN IMAGINED!
I ordered this book after hearing a radio drama, based on the book and presented in 15-minutes-a-day segments. I found it fascinating and inspiring, because I share Michael's love of science and a deep, livingChristian faith.True to life in those times, with lots of interestingevents which clearly illustrate the character of Faraday and those aroundhim, the story is written to appeal to any age reader. As an electronicsprofessional I did not find the writng at all childish, yet it is an easyread and contains some humor as well. One can feel Michael's pain as hefaces the obstacles, applaud his persistence and humility, and share hisexuberance as his dreams were finally realized. Mr. Ludwig's balancedtreatment of Faraday's life provides insights into many aspects of theLondon of his time, as well as detailed descriptions of Michael'sexperiments. Manyprominent scientists and their discoveries are mentionedin the book, and a two-page bibliography is included at the end. This shortpublication could be used as a starting point for researching a larger, more detailed treatise.Every high school student and adult should readthis book. Thank you, Charles Ludwig and Amazon, for this appealingbiography of Michael Farady. ... Read more
