5-0 out of 5 stars friendship
This is one of my favorite children's books. It reminds me that friendship is something to value and savor for every moment, and is not something to take for granted. Just as Corduroy was doing everything in his power to find his lost butten so he would be wanted, the little girl was saving her money to have companionship from Corduroy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle ofyour Child's Birth will Stir Your World
I know that some reviewers feel that this book is exaggerated, unrealistic and that it gives a false perception to children that they are more special than they actually are, but you know what? I don't care. I read the good and bad reviews before ordering it and decided to go ahead anyway. I'm glad I did! The coming of my child may not have stirred anyone else's world but it sure stirred my husband's and mine. When I looked into his beautiful little eyes mine couldn't stop running, and when his little face touched my cheek my heart skipped a beat.

I have given this book to many new parents, and with all due respect to the reviewer below, not one has observed that it wasn't realistic. This book is poetry, not geography, not climatology, not anthropology.POETRY...And what's wrong with the idea of a super-happy planet rejoicing at the birth of every new baby? That's how it should be.I applaud the author for dreaming big. This gift will be well received.Don't hesitate. ... Editorial Review

Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Little Story
I purchased this book to read to my baby and it is just a sweet little tale about Mommies and their mischievious babies.I can't wait until she is old enough to sit on my lap and really understand the story when I read it to her.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an Oldie but a Goldie!
My kindergarten teacher had also read this book to me and now I'm reading it to my kids, but really to my son because he's 4 and my daughter is 8. She listens to it when it comes time for me to read it to him because she would find it amusing. Blueberries for Sal preserve a distinct since of life when tin pails and wood smoke, bobby pins and rambling dirt roads were routine. At the same time it is a timeless portrayal of curiosity and maternal instinct as Sal and her mother find themselves sharing their berry patch with a hungry bear cub and its mother. The words flow in a natural rhythm, creating patterns that build anticipation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely In the Top 5 of All Children's Books
Almost everyone else has said it already--this is as good a book as you can read to your kids. Not, contrary to what an isolated review suggested, stilted at all.Just beautifully evocative of a family living complete and joyful lives, with their ties to the land still unbroken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, beautiful, full of love
I love this book!I bought this book for my son (then 3) when I was expecting my daughter.Admittedly, this is MY favorite book.My son would much rather read something silly than poignant. But this book is GORGEOUS!The illustrations are achingly beautiful. The love in this multigenerational family leaps off the page. There is a home birth, love of the land/ nature/ farming, and sibling love. The boy in the story is taught by his mother, father, grandfather and grandmother about "all the places to love."The story closes with him teaching these things to his new sister.Every once in a while, my son asks me to choose the books I like best for our reading and I always choose this one.Don't get me wrong, he likes it too (he's now 5) he just doesn't usually choose it.You won't regret buying this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passing on the things we love
I am not only a Book junkie, I am a grandma who wants to pass on the Passion. I fell in love with this book not only because I grew up in rural Michigan, on a dairy farm, with my grandparents up the road. But because this book captures the love and family bond that I want to pass to my grandchildren. Mike Wimmer did an exceptional job of bringing this lovely story to life. I Dare youto read this out loud to any child you love .. and not shed a tear! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!
When first reading this book, you may laugh or just be speechless--but I, personally, was in love with this book when I was about 3 or 4!!I don't know why, but this book really interested me.The delivery on this book was quite fast--quicker than I expected--I recommend this service and book to anyone and everyone!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Poo or cookie? You decide...
My almost 28 month old enjoys this book, and neither he nor I are bothered by the concerns others have voiced in their reviews.Rather than be put off by the "I, Joshua's mother," language, I find it amusing in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way.I suspect this was the author's intent, and it was made part of the story to give the mom or dad reader something to relate to and find amusing as they read the book to the child for the eighty-fifth time, not to voice a serious complaint to the one read to.As others have said, you can simply change the language as you're reading to whatever you choose to call bowel movements, urine or various parts of the male anatomy. My son gets that the large white thing is a potty even though it looks nothing like his, and personally I think that it only helps children to be exposed to expressionist art from an early age rather than dumbing everything down to photographs or representational drawings. However, there's a risk in choosing an expressionist venue for a how-to book aimed at 2 year olds.My son tends to interpret things somewhat literally and to be stubborn once he gets an idea in his head, and I expect others his age do as well. And he has a firmly implanted idea in his head about this book's illustrations. He thinks the poo looks like a cookie.
5-0 out of 5 stars It is fun, funny and tells it straight in kid terms
I think people saying this book could be damaging are going way too far and have lost all perspective. There is nothing wrong with it- the illustrations are cute, it is really matter of fact about how a child's body works and how potty training happens. It is also accepting of the normal mistakes along the way, no problem!

5-0 out of 5 stars Child's Favorite
My 21 month old son loves the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, at first we used to make up the story from what we remembered about it, but now with this book he can follow along and point at the troll hiding under the bridge. It gets may requests. The pictures are great and the story flows quickly enough to keep his interest.I like the ending.Snip Snap Snout, this reviews wrote out.

Editorial Review

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter LOVES this book
I actually surprisingly just bought this book earlier today and my almost 17 month old daughter already loves it.She loves the rhythm of the words and the large colorful animals. She like the fact that she is familiar with all the animals and can tell me what noise they make. 2-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted
I bought this book soon after we adopted our daughter.I found the writing style to be convoluted and precocious, much like the way children speak in contemporary movies (adult words from a child's mouth).Sorry, not a fan.We are still looking for a book that addresses an open, domestic adoption that can speak to children, not adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
Our son is adopted and we absolutely love this book.I agree with what everyone has said! This book also has given me ideas on how to word a little book with his own story in it.We will definately buy this book for anyone that we know who is adopting.

Editorial Review

When George's mother tells her son to bark, he meows. She patiently explains that "Cats go meow. Dogs go arf. Now, bark, George." But he quacks! Then oinks. Then moos. Becoming less patient and more exasperated, George's mom takes him to the vet, who reaches deep down inside the errant pup, and, much to everyone's surprise, pulls out a cat! Then a duck, a pig, and finally a cow. George is cured, and barks at last! On the way home, his proud mother wants to show off her convincingly doglike son to everyone on the street. But when she says, "Bark, George," he simply says, "Hello." This is the simplest offering yet from Jules Feiffer--creator of the delightful picture books Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Fun Read Aloud
My students love this book.It is pure fun all the way throught. It makes a great read aloud and the children love to help read the words deep on each page as the vet has to reach deeper into George to remove the unwanted animal. We always get a great laugh out of the mothers expressions and relating it to the children's mothers always brings the house down with laughter. I don't think in all the times I have read this book to my students has anyone ever guess the ending.Just a delightful book from beginning to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars No, George...pigs go "oink"!
This is among my most beloved children's books and one that I eagerly share with children and parents time and again. The text and the illustrations could hardly be simpler, yet they are so well imagined and so well realized by Jules Feiffer that one may take for granted his skill in creating this masterpiece. I am partial to this book because it must be read aloud to be fully enjoyed--and not simply read but acted, as one might act out role in a play. I put my best foot forward every time I read this book to my audiences at the Children's Museum or for various schools because I know that the mannerisms and actions I employ to complement the text will always elicit laughter from the children. This is a contemporary classic and a book that deserves a treasured place in your child's library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Book...
I borrowed this book from the library awhile ago for my daughter and think it is hilarious. My husband and I both thought it was a cute, amusing story that tells a cute story about a dog who can't quite bark. The facial expressions on the mommy dog and vet are so funny. When I borrowed the book, my daughter was young (under a year) so she didn't really understand yet, but now she's 19 months so I'm going to get it again and see how it goes over now. This book is definitely one that the whole family will enjoy. ... Sturdy board pages. 5 animals, each with the texture of its "kiss". A toddler-delighting squeak sound when you press the pages. Don't expect too much, and you won't be disappointed. Overall, my 1.5 years all enjoys leafing through it, saying the animal's names and the sounds they make, and pressing it to hear it squeak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Bedtime Story
My 2-year-old son, Max, LOVES this book. He insists we read it every night, immediately followed by _Max's Toys_. The touch-and-feel areas are very small, although it doesn't seem to bother him. He just loves to open and close the window.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOODNIGHT MAX
It's a very sweet, short story-good for 2's and 3's. A great book? No. A cute story with two rabbits? Yes!

4-0 out of 5 stars You have to be a fan
I bought this book after reading all the great reviews. It is a nice book, bright colors, lots of attention to detail, silly story line, but I didn't think the areas for the child to feel were large enough. The sticky candy in Max's pajamas is just about the size of a child's fingertip, the lace curtain is just a thin slip of fabric, the lightning is a skinny zig-zag of foil and the "cookie crumbs" sandpaper is only about a quarter-inch high. There are other touch-and-feel books that provide a much larger exploratory surface.Still, this book does contain a good variety (sticky candy, rough crumbs, fur, smelly sock, etc.)I'm not sure why, but that smelly sock always seems to be such a hit! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Note that this is a paperback!
I didn't notice that this book was a paperback and was expecting a board book similiar to the English version sold in stores.Board books are much more durable, of course.I also agree that there is a color match issue as mentioned by someone else.Otherwise, I'm happy to have the story in French.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way for your child to learn french
We got this bok because we are trying to teach our 5 yr old some basic French. This book is great for naming objects and the repetitive nature of the ryhmes make it easy for the child to learn.Since she knew and loved the english version, this was a great way to learn some french.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for teaching French, but not as magical as the original
This book is a near-literal translation of the original "Good Night Moon," including copies of the original pictures. Because my 18-month-old loves the original English version, and because I'm trying to teach him French, I ordered "Bonsoir Lune" so that he could associate the French words with the pictures and story that he already knows in English. For that purpose, it works fine.

Editorial Review

"Harry was a white dog with black spots who liked everything, exceptgetting a bath." Taking matters into his own paws, he buries his family'sscrubbing brush in the backyard and runs away from home before they can wranglehim into the tub. Harry gets dirty playing in the street, dirtier at therailroad, and dirtier still playing tag with the other dogs. When sliding downthe coal chute, he actually changes from a white dog with black spots to a blackdog with white spots! Of course, by the time he gets home he is completelyunrecognizable to his family--even when he does all his clever flip-floppingtricks. In a stroke of doggy genius, he unearths the bath brush, begs for abath, and the rest is history. Youngsters will completely relate to the urge torebel, the thrill of getting dirty, and, finally, the reassurance of family.Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Classic
This is a childhood classic read children should not miss out on.Harry loves to get dirty and he hates baths!I read this one when I was younger!

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHILDHOOD CLASSIC
Harry the Dirty Dog is the quintessential children's book for young readers. With its eye- appealing illustrations and simple text, it is the perfect transition from guided reading to independent reading.A delightful trip back to the 50's (sans the conservative vibe and racial/ misogynistic stereotypes of the time), Harry the Dirty Dog is the story of a little dog who is so opposed to getting a bath that he takes matters into his own hands...Er, paws?Harry buries his scrubbing brush in the back yard and takes off from home. While he has a day full of fun adventures, Harry not only gets himself dirtier, but also realizes that while he doesn't like taking a bath, there are many things about his family that he misses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for introducing the senses
As a pet therapy partner with my beloved poodle, Coco, and a "Reading to Dogs" pair, we love this little book as we discuss how to pet and tickle and love a dog.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original
My 12 month old daughter loved "Pat the Bunny" so I was excited to get this book for her, but it's not as good as the original. There is too much text in this one... it doesn't hold her interest as much and the activites inside the book are more difficult and not as toddler-friendly.She started destroying the book's activities in a day or two.Maybe for older kids it's better, but whereas the original book was fine for her level, this was a disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not sturdy enough for toddlers
The idea is a good one, but the very first thing my toddler did was rip the frog off the page. Also, it's not board book, and it doesn't have regular paper pages, it's something in between.More like oak tag folded over to create stiff pages. Pat the Bunny is the only one of this series that I would recommend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an essential christmas tradition
When he was six, my little brother got this book for Christmas.Scratch and sniff was relatively new, and we were amazed at the lovely fragrances of orange, cocoa, and apple pie hidden inside this book!We both hated the pine, like another reader.I have read that scent is the most evocative sense, bringing back the past. When I found out this book was again available, I bought it for my now adult brother for Christmas.Of course he remembered it, just like me.Get this book for any youngster for a Christmas gift, I promise it will provide Holiday memories that will last a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sweet Smell of Christmas
I had a copy of this book for my sons as they were growing up and it was always their favorite.I am now getting a copy for my grandson in hopes that he will enjoy hours also sitting on my lap reading and enjoying the smells of the holiday all year around.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 1st graders LOVE this book!
I bought this for my first grade class, and weeks after Christmas it's still their favorite book in the room. They squeal with delight over the scents and are amazed at how the fragrances are trapped in the pages. A must-buy for anyone who knows a child in the 4-8 year old range. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew?
I was worried about this one, because pumpkin faces are stuck in permanent frown. I brought this book home to my almost two-year-old niece and she loved it. She paraded it wherever we went for the weekend, and started to learn the names of all the different pumpkins. We read it thirty times in two days. I felt like a hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Pompo's Nose
This book is full of fun ideas that have to do with, when something like a pumpkin nose, is found in a pumpkin patch. The funny words and mentioning of different foods, was so silly, that I laughed the whole way through. The nose could be just about anything I could dream up, from a bat to a tree. All in all a funny, entertaining and happy book, especially when the right owner is finally found! I read it three times out loud!

3-0 out of 5 stars Clever use of pumpkins as characters
"Dr. Pompo's Nose" cleverly uses real pumpkins as the characters, but I felt that the rhyming text was forced and akward to read. However, the range of expressions on the pumpkins' faces are amazing and fun to look at. Although I liked this book, I would recommend "How Are You Peeling" by the same authors more. ... Read more
