5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious family heirloom!
My mother picked this book up at a yard sale for a quarter when my son was an infant. I began reading it to him, and then my other 2 children when they were old enough. It is a family favorite in our house. My 13 year old son just found it, packed away for safe-keeping, and informed me "it's story night tonight!" They all love to get involved by helping make the voices (because there absolutely has to be different ones for each animal!) and it is one big laugh from start to finish! I would (and do) recommend this book to everyone who reads to their kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars My ALL TIME Favorite Childrens Book!
I remember my Mom reading this book to me when I was very young, and now I have the extreme pleasure of reading it to my 3 boys 30 years later!!! It is a fabulous rolliking, rhyming tale of all the animals in the jungle pleading with the elephant not to sneeze...it calls for all sorts of silly voices & is a joy to read! My 3 year old finishes the sentences now & mimics the voice I use. It is a family treasure from my childhood & I am so lucky to have found it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!
What a cute book this is!The poor elephant really, really has to sneeze but all his "buddies" beg him not to.You see, the last time he sneezed he blew all the stripes off the zebra, blew the bees' stingers out and they "had to make do with rose thorns and glue," blew all the fur off the bear, and turned the crocodile's nose inside out.The pictures are darling, the poor guy is doing everything he can from blowing out the sneeze and it's just really cute.He even has his trunk suspended in water. However, it's the mouse that scares him silly out of sneezing and then, when given the logic of an elephant being afraid of something so small as a mouse, the elephant starts to laugh and laugh.Pretty soon, the mouse has to tell him to stop because the elephant's laugh wreaks havoc as well.Such a cute book and we have to read it "all the time" in this house.Great story and I highly recommend it! ... Editorial Review

Once upon a time three pigs built three houses, out of straw, sticks, and bricks. Along came a wolf, who huffed and puffed... So, you think you knowthe rest? Think again. With David Wiesner at the helm, it's never safe to assumetoo much. When the wolf approaches the first house, for example, and blows itin, he somehow manages to blow the pig right out of the story frame. The textcontinues on schedule--"...and ate the pig up"--but the perplexed expression onthe wolf's face as he looks in vain for his ham dinner is priceless. One by one,the pigs exit the fairy tale's border and set off on an adventure of their own.Folding a page of their own story into a paper airplane, the pigs fly off tovisit other storybooks, rescuing about-to-be-slain dragons and luring the catand the fiddle out of their nursery rhyme.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
The Three Little Pigs is a clever spin on the classic nursery tale. The three pigs manage to walk straight out of the pages they were encapsulated in, and wonder in and out of other classic tales, freeing other creatures as they go.They ultimately bring a dragon home with them to the brick house, just in time to scare away the wolf.

Review on the children's book "The Three Pigs" by David Wiesner
5-0 out of 5 stars You want a "correct" nursery rhyme? Go elsewhere!
I don't have John or Yoko in my family tree, and I certainly don't think of myself as particularly cutting-edge, nor is my 4-and-a-half-year-old daughter. But she practically rolled off the bed, she was laughing so hard the first time we read this book together. Yes, I think you have to have some curiosity, some questioning-of-authority, a well-developed sense of humor, and be able to do a certain amount of play-acting along with the book as you read it, so for those tired parents who just want to whip through a few old standards as quickly as possible, without actually thinking about what they're reading, this is probably not the book. But oh, the peals of laughter from my daughter! They were priceless! ... Read more

William Wegman and his cast of canines are back, and this time Chip is in a bit of a bind. His school report is due and he hasn't got a clue as to what he might want to report on--all he wants to do is take pictures! But write a report he must, so Chip heads downtown in search of a topic. He consults a host of characters--and snaps their photos, too--including fire chief Chundo, construction foreman Culvert, Barry the beautician, and police officer Badgerino, who tells Chip that "ideas come from everywhere. There is no one way. Look in all directions." Chip takes Badgerino's valuable advice and decides that a photo essay is a great idea. After all, a "picture is worth a thousand words!" Wegman does it again with imaginative settings, colorful text, and those delightful Weimaraners. ... Read more

Lola is a very fussy eater. Carrots are for rabbits and peas are "toosmall and too green." One day, after rattling off her long list of despisedfoods, she ends with the vehement pronouncement, "And I absolutely will nevernot ever eat a tomato." Not convinced, Lola's older sister Charlie has an idea. She tells Lola that the orange things on the table are not carrots, but "orangetwiglets from Jupiter" and peas are in fact "green drops from Greenland." Mashedpotatoes, when pitched as "cloud fluff from the pointiest peak of Mount Fuji"suddenly seem appealing to Lola. And in the end, might she even eat a tomato?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie & Lola are a great team
My 6 month old son loves to looks at these books as I read them to him, infact he's enjoyed them from about the age of 3 1/2 months. We have yet to come across the dilemma of a fussy eater, however as a former fussy eater myself, I find this book a great way to ignite your childs imagination when it comes to unpleasant foods. Lauren Childs does a wonderful job as usual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely delightful!
I just love Charlie & Lola! This is a great book!Charlie is such a lovely big brother and reminds me so much of several of the children I cared for when I lived in England.Lola is also delightful, and 'full of beans' as they say on that side of the pond. There's no need for Supernanny with these two, they are sweet, respectful, charming, imaginative and delightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated
Eloise Wilkin has been a favorite since I was a child, we treasured our Little Golden Books and passed some down to our own children, my daughters especially loved the illustrations of the little children . Now I am buying them for my grandchildren, this book is beautifully bound and includes some of her best work. Mrs. Wilkin creates a lovely, serene and happy family atmosphere that children and adults relate to and enjoy. Our grandchildren are the third generation to thrill to these books.

I am very enthusiastic about exposing my children to different cultures and ideas, and when I saw this book and read the reviews on Amazon, I was excited to get it for my girls. When the book arrived, I read it immediately. The story and the pictures are beautiful.I liked everything until the very last sentence of the book -- I was very surprised to read that Yeh-Shen's stepmother and stepsister were "crushed to death in a shower of flying stones."Although I understand that this may be part of the original story, I am giving this book one star because it is supposed to be appropriate for children 4-8.I don't believe, with such a violent and disturbing ending, that it is appropriate for this age group. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not for kids?Nonsense
I think some of the reviewers who didn't think this was a good child's book probably didn't actually read it to a child. My granddaughter (4) wanted it read over and over. The picture of the "scary" troll was a perfect chance to explain that not everyone who looks scary is a bad guy, that troll is Sgt. Detritus who is a very good guy. After I told her that, she explained it to her cousin, her father, and one of my dogs.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not Suitable at All
This is not a children's book at all. The pictures could be upseting, there is not story behind it, the language is not what you want your kids to learn at an early age or ever! I have never read this author before, but I will certainly won't do it after this book. I am glad I did not buy it, my son picked it out at the library misled by the front picture.

Editorial Review

Walter makes his third appearance in yet another unapologetically silly picture book, this one dedicated to "everyone who's ever felt misjudged or misunderstood." The story begins when animal gas expert Professor Kompressor pays a visit to Walter's family, equipped with a contraption that looks like a cross between a vacuum cleaner and an old phonograph: "I understand your dog has a farting disorder," he says. At first it seems as if the professor's prescription of powders and potions is working, but one day, young Billy and Betty see Walter floating like a helium balloon over the trees, so full of pent-up gas he has become airborne. Unable to release his gas, the unfortunate dog floats over hill and dale for days and days. The formula for these books requires the much-maligned Walter to redeem his gaseous self by saving the day (he gasses out burglars in the first one and helps catch bank robbers in the second). Here, even more absurdly, he saves millions of butterflies from a freezing windstorm by letting rip a warm cloud of air that melts the frost off their wings.Colorful, crisp, almost three-dimensional art, generated with a digital painting and collage technique, gives the book a bizarre, sophisticated style that both complements and elevates the cheap laughs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Walter the farting dog
This book, Walter the farting dog, contains a great lesson while engaging children because of his socially unacceptable behavior.Don't judge a book by its cover....updated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the three Walter books...
I love this book! The illustrations take a little getting used to (definitely off-beat, like the other two), and the storyline is slightly subversive, but the whole book is just very funny (for me, as an adult), and my kids love it, too. It's the one book that I will cheerfully read them twice in the same night.Farts aside, it's actually pretty wholesome and carries (I think) a positive message about being authentic and true to yourself. Plus, it has larger than usual words for a book targeted at this age group, which I think is useful. All in all, well worth the twelve or fourteen bucks you pay for it.I've bought copies for some other parents as gifts...(Nobody's complained...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace
This is a great story with a great message. It tells children there are no limits to what they can be.It tells children not to be deterred by sterotypes or opinions. You can be anything you set your mind to.I bought copies for both my son and my niece.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a teaching tool!!!
Do you need a book that confronts racism, appreciates theater, and shatters stereotypes on a primary level? If so, Amazing Grace, by Mary Hoffman, is the book for you.Not only does this book cover the above topics, but is also highlights on key items for younger readers, such as reading about individual achievements and moral dilemmas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, Not DePaola's Best
Tomie dePaola states in the liner notes that Oliver's story is partly autobiographical. "I could spend hours drawing, and nobody ever asked me to play on their ball teams because I was so bad at it."
2-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning, but fizzles out
I bought this book because Oliver Button is very much like I was at his age.He is more interested in playing with girls and doing activities that are not usually done by boys.I also thought it would be a good way to teach children that they don't have to conform to gender roles. However, having worked with elementary school children in various settings for years, I found the story to be very unrealistic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oliver Button is a Sissy by Will Herman
I really enjoyed this book.It is about a little boy named Oliver Button. This little boy doesn't really care what other people think, he likes to do what he thinks is fun, and that is it.He doesn't do normal things like other boys, he dances, and jumps rope for exercise. He got a new pair of tap shoes and the older boys teased him and called him a sissy and wrote it on the wall.Oliver still kept going to dance school and practicing and practicing. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TWIST TO AN OLD FAVORITE
The story of the Three Little Pigs has been around for years and years and few children, nor adults, for that matter do not know of it.Here we have the roles of the "bad guy" completely reversed. The kids love this one and think it is truely funny.I did like the fact that the wolves did not receive the bad press that they normally receive in such tales and I did like the fact that even though the Big Bad Pig was truely bad in the beginning, he did indeed have redeeming features. The illustrations were great and the text followed the illustrations perfectly. This is a fun book to read to the class.I highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story, distracting pop-ups
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig has been a favorite story in our household for many years. We love it!I can't recommend this story enough!!!!The big bad pig is a tyrant and the wolves are such ingenious engineers, it makes the Big Bad Pig look even more formidable with his sledgehammer and dynamite. I recently purchased the pop-up version for a friend, but can honestly say I enjoyed reading the ordinary book more than the pop-up version. The pop-ups were very distracting and I think it takes away the energy from the story and the reader becomes disengaged, trying to fiddle with all the contraptions.I vote for the good old-fashioned book version any time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Bad Pig is Good
When I told my son that I bought a book called "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig" he just laughed at me and corrected me.When we got it, he couldn't get enough of the book.I think he has it memorized now! :) Very cute ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's in a Name
Cynthia Rylant has done it again-- this story tells of an elderly woman who has outlived most of those she loved and doesn't want to risk a new attachment-but but a nameless stray dog changes her mind. The story is done with a wonderful blend of humor and poignancy. It is a favorite in one pre-K classroom I know--wonderful way to positively approach those tricky issues of aging and death with young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: THE OLD WOMAN WHO NAMED THINGS
Ten years after first reading this aloud at circle time, Rylant's lovely story of the old woman who has to decide to, once more, take a chance on love and loss, has become a beloved old friend to me.Brown's quirky illustrations are quite memorable--especially the joyous spread near the end of the story in which the dog, with his tongue hanging out, happily sticks his head out the window of the old woman's car that is driving him home.Cynthia Rylant has won a Newbery for MISSING MAY, and has authored HENRY AND MUDGE, the greatest easy reader series ever published.THE OLD WOMAN WHO NAMED THINGS is absolutely right up there with the best of her work.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Children's Book
This book is so emotionally satisfying.Cynthia Rylant brings the universal struggle of choosing to risk love and loss to a child's level.I never tire of reading it to my daughters (ages 5 & 3).They love the book, as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very sweet book
This was given to us as a gift & we are so thankful for being introduced to Sandra Boynton's books. What's really great about this particular book is that you can sing it!At first I made up a tune, but then I discovered on Sandra Boynton's website that she has several CD's with musical recordings of some of her books and more. Many of the recordings are done by celebrities.Snuggle Puppy is sung by Eric Stolz. My husband figured out the guitar chords, and now we sing it to my 4 month old.She loves it!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute book AND song - grumpy dad must not have known.
This is a cute book, but a cute song as well.It might be hard to sing it if you haven't heard the melody, but you can look at the Philadelphia Chickens CD online and hear enough to get the idea.It might be more fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a dog!
Sandra Boynton has always understood the human-animal bond and this book celebrates how essential dogs are to our lives. ... Read more
