3-0 out of 5 stars Silly book kids will like to read around Halloween.
Poor Oscar Myer wiener dog (a hotdog dog) gets teased all the time. The bully dogs are always laughing at him because of his size and shape. For Halloween, Oscar's mom buys him a costume that is a hotdog roll with mustard on it. Oscar is so embarrassed, but wears it to avoid hurting his mothers feelings. Oscar gets laughed at once again but the story twists to allow Oscar a chance to be a hero. Oscar wins the respect of the bullies and they all share their Halloween dog treats with him. Silly story with decent, basic illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hallo-wiener
An adorable book that my preschool children want to hear again and again. This is a standard book in my preschool during the month of October. It is so funny with a lesson to boot!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Frank-ly" my dear, this book never gets old!
Dav Pilkey has written a most delightful book that addresses lots of kids issues: being different from your friends, trying to please parents, but best off all, wanting to be a hero!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not my favorite by this author
My kids are I are huge fans of Kevin Henkes! We enjoy this book, but I don't like it quite as much as "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse," "Chrysanthemum," "Kitten's First Full Moon," and others.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Illustrations and a Fun Book for Budding Readers
Sweet Lilly is back with another adventure for her fans. This time, she's convinced she'll be the flower girl when her teacher announces he'll be marrying the school nurse.

1-0 out of 5 stars Board book is far off from description Amazon uses (hardcover)
I remember liking this book as a child and I thought I could get this book for my daughter. The board book has been so abridged that it lacks a lot of things that I thought were funny.AND what about that "climatic ending" where the apples all topple - Not there! I wouldn't even recognize the wording in the board book as Dr. Suess's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great fan of this one, just not really appealing
One of the books which I keep wondering why I don't really like it. But there are lots of small reasons, none of them major but they all add up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Generations of happiness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not near as good as "Zoom"
If you have never seen any books by this author before then I would recommend purchasing "Zoom".It's amazing which made me slightly disappointed with this one.I was hoping it would be just as good as the first but it was harder to follow and wasn't as fun to look at.I wish I had not bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than Zoom
Once again Istvan Banyai takes your perception on a roller coaster ride. This amazing sequel is even better than Zoom. Thoroughly enjoyable and could also be used as part of a motivational speech on seeing things as they are and aren't. Perception isn't always reality.

I bought this book at the same time as I bought Zoom. Both are great books for getting people to think outside the box, but for some reason, I still like the original Zoom best.Still a good book though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection!
I have been reading this book aloud to my 8yo daughter and 6yo son.Even though my son initially showed no interest when I brought the book out (robots and dinosaurs are more his thing) he has been riveted, and my animal-loving daughter has been especially interested in each story, and each picture.
5-0 out of 5 stars This gift to our grandchildren will be special.
I've had the pleasure of reading all of the James Herriot books. The stories and wonderful illustrations in this book
5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book to read to small ones at bedtime
With two small boys, I think I've read or have become acquainted with much of the literature available for parents who read to their children in the evening. This setting of James Herriot's stories, with their accompanying illustrations, is top notch, head and shoulders above anything else I've seen. The stories are heartwarming but realistic enough to avoid being saccharine--animals die or get injured--and the overall message is a good one:it's our responsibility to care for God's creation, especially the animals we have. ... Editorial Review

Parents will be quick to jump to the conclusion that there can benothing appealing in a tale of an ugly kid who breaks things. And certainly--from that adult perspective--there's something off-putting about the illustrations of David, with his potato head, feral eyes, and a maniacal grin that exposes ferociously pointed teeth. But 3- and 4-year-olds see things differently, and will find his relentless badness both funny and liberating."No, David," wails the off-stage mother, as David reaches for the cookie jar. "No! No! No!" as he makes a swamp out of the bathroom. "Come back here, David!" as he runs naked down the street. Each vivid double-page illustration is devoted to a different youthful indiscretion and a different vain parental plea. Readers will be amused to know that the protagonist's name is no accident: award-winning writer-illustrator David Shannon wrote the book after discovering a similar effort that he had made, again with himself at the center of each drawing, at the age of 5. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, David, I love you
I don't know why my sixteen-month old daugter loves this book.Perhaps it's the repetition, or illustrations, or the emphasis with which the phrases are read.I DO know that she now has an insatiable interest in books, uses the word 'no' appropriately, and anticipates the resolution at the end of this and "David Gets in Trouble."
5-0 out of 5 stars It makes my kids laugh with delight, that makes it a five for me
Some reviewers take this stuff way too seriously! The book is hilarious, my kids giggle everytime they read it.And, my three year old can read it, which makes her feel great.David isn't evil, I don't see him portrayed as evil, and if he is, my kids are evil also because lord knows they have done almost everything in there themselves, the lesson is that we love and adore our kids even if they are misbehaving!

5-0 out of 5 stars kids LOVE it
I didn't really get this book at first since there is little writing and just these big, somewhat scary illustrations.Just goes to show you that children's books are FOR CHILDREN, because my kids, 4 and 2, LOVE David. They scream and giggle when they see the bad things he's doing, and throughout the day they will "remind" themselves not to do something "bad like David."They can look at the illustrations and create whole stories out of one page.I think that is what the beauty of the book is truly about. As I started reading it with them, I became charmed by the crude, simple drawings, and just how expressive David is, even though he's not more than a stick figure. The first time we read it, I just read the words on each page.I had to explain one or two pictures, but they completely got the ending themselves. The very next time, I asked them what they thought was going on in each picture and they went crazy telling me all about the things David was doing, and why that's not allowed and what he should be doing instead! They truly never tire of this story, and I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I first picked this title up.Contrary to what some other reviewers said, David doesn't inspire bad behavior or copycat actions. That's the whole point of reading it with them.I don't think some of the other books in the series are as inspired as this first one, but that may just be because I was spoiled by how much we all love this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another essential and timeless classic!
I have to admit that I never really "got" all the hype about "Where the Wild Things Are".Sure the drawings were great, but the story never really drew me in.Now that I've seen and read "In the Night Kitchen" I am the biggest Sendak fan!The beauty of this particular story is that you can start reading it to your child at any age.The rhythm and cadence make it a perfect read aloud bedtime store. The drawings are amazing -- reminiscent of "Little Nemo In Slumberland".
5-0 out of 5 stars Strange, but my son's favorite
When we first got this book, I was skeptical. The story is a bit surreal. But my child LOVES it! He loves the chants, and I think he likes it being a dreamscape, it gives him something new to think about. He insists on it every night! Sendak has touched the pulse of children again, though to adults it may just look strange.

5-0 out of 5 stars On Heavy Rotation
I just bought this book for my [...] son and we love it. I am actually jealous that I did not get to experience this book as a child with an unlimited imagination. However, it did not take me long to suspend my adult mind and fall 'into the night kitchen'. This is a fantastical adventure via a dream had by "mickey" the main character of the story. Mickey must help these bakers make the morning cakes! He does so in a series of what may seem like bizarre events. First he falls from his bed into the (beautifully illustrated)night kitchen, into the vat of batter being turned by the bakers and into ( OH NO!) the mickey oven! It took me about two reads to find a lyrical flow that was comfortable for me, as I found it a little choppy at first, however it never seemed to bother my little guy. Prior to getting this book for our son , I had no idea that it was stirring up a little controversy. It would be a shame for someone to pass on this book because reviews deemed it odd or non sensical or (dare I say) immoral, b/c we all know by now Mickey is nude. The best treasure we could give to any child is a collection of books, this book is definitely a gem in that treasure. It is currently on heavy rotation along with Where the Wild things are, Strega nona, and I stink ! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story about giving and letting go.
Linda White, the author, did a superb job of telling this story, which was inspired by her aunt during the days of the depression. An elderly woman, Rebecca Estelle, loves her garden. She enjoys planting her flowers and food for the year with her pet cat as her company. Rebecca hates pumpkins because her family had to eat nothing but that for years when they were poor. She has vowed to never even look at another pumpkin again, but her kindness takes over and as the story unravels she realizes that pumpkins hold a special place in her heart. Adorably detailed pictures with a great feeling of autumn and fall days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a good book to share with kids in the Fall.I read this to my kids once and they were hooked.Ages 4-8 is right on target with this book.I did give this one as a gift to a five year old girl who has a birthday in the Fall and we were told that she loved it. When her parent's took her pumpking picking she kept talking about story in this book.My kids did the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic fall book.
Too Many Pumpkins really captures the fall/Halloween mood. The illustrations are marvelous--I love the look of the exploding pumpkins, and the cat's colors and expressions are perfect!Descriptions detailing all the pumpkin dishes the woman makes add to the feeling, and I loved seeing all her jack-o-lanterns!The townspeople really seem like ordinary people anyone could run into--I especially like the dad in the down jacket and his young child.

Great Book! Really summarizes the lessons of Conversations with God. I'm a little embarrassed to say that it was so simple and profound that I actually found it more powerful and "teaching" than the actual CWG. 4-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book
This story is an fresh perspective on a simple subject. The author sees scarecrows as neither scary nor effective in repelling crows. On the contrary, her scarecrow is a gentle and companionable creature who welcomes crows with, well, open arms. It is a lovely antidote if your little one has been frightened by an unfortunate Halloween experience. And the illustrations! Lovely, lovely. Rich fall colors, muted tones, dreamy softened edges. Buy this book if you are considering making over the paint scheme in your home. Copy the illustrator's color palette shamelessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and parents
Most DK products for children are outstanding and this is one of them. It is a beginner's dictionary for Second and Third graders although my First Grader, who is an advanced reader uses it extensively. It has a section devoted to how to use the dictionary which is well explained and easily understandable for the student. From it a student learns that each entry tells what part of speech the word is (i.e. "noun"), how it is pronounced (used in the Dictionary only on some hard words) , other forms of the word, the plural, antonyms, comparisons, tenses, and related words, as well as a sample sentence. It also has a section on parts of speech "All About Words" which is well written, although the terms used to describe some parts of speech may not be the same terms used in different schools. For example, the dictionary describes some verbs as "Helping Verbs" where others describe them as "Linking verbs."
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Kid's Dictionary!
This dictionary by Dorling Kindersley is just what a childs reference book should be.It is sturdy and brightly attractive and my 4 year old daughter often asks me to sit down with her and just look at the various pictures and tell her what word goes with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story
This book is simply a delight! I bought it for my granddaughter who is 9 months. She loves for me to read it to her. We just love it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars The story behind the story is more interesting
This book is simply not that great. The rubber ducky sound at the end is cute but nothing to applaud. The art is borderline awful and, while the story behind the story is cute, it just did not come out great as a children's book. I must confess, I am not an Eric Carle fan though, with the exception of The Very Busy Spider, which I enjoyed. To put it simply, don't bother. The two redeeming qualities of this book are 1) it teaches counting well (the first rubber duck, the second rubber duck) and it exposes the kids to animals you do not see every day (octupus, flamingo, pelican).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Emergent Readers
As an Early Childhood professional I am always looking for goods books rich in language, story and pictures. This book is one of Eric Carle's best books.I am a teacher/owner of Oceanside Pre-Kindergarten a unique Literacy based program to help children prepare for Kindergarten in today's intense learning environment in formal education.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome and important addition
Uno decides to live in the forest surrounded by lush plants and unique animals. But first a village, then a town, and finally a city supplant his garden, make the animals disappear, and crowd out the plants with buildings. Uno and the city residents finally realize the damage people can do to a natural environment simply by living in it -- and how important it is to the environment that people live in harmony with the plants and animals around them. Imaginatively written and superbly illustrated by Graeme Base, "Uno's Garden" presents to young readers the critically important story of what damage we can do to the land we live on, the animals we live with, and how nature can repair that damage if we help it and allow it through community-based approaches to conservation and environmental restoration. "Uno's Garden" is a welcome and important addition to family, school, and community library picturebook collections and Environmental Studies reference shelves for young readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars GRAEME BASE FOR KIDS ONLY...BAH
Graeme Base never ceases to amaze me. He's so darned versatile. I don't have children, but I love his illustrations. "Uno's Garden" has a different look about it in a lot of places, but boy does the message pack a punch? This is a sweet and poignant story that deserves to be read by adults as well as children. You'll laugh at the Lumpybums (I laugh at my own lumpy bum) and be saddened by the loss of the snortlepig. Do not give up hope as Mr. Base assures us...somehow he will be back. A wonderful, wonderful story. Thank you once again Graeme!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
My 3 and hald year old loves this book! The ilustrations are wonderful. He adores all the weird-cool names for the different creatures. He loves looking for the Snortlepig. At this point some of the arthmetic is a bit above his head, but we use the book to reinforce his counting skills. As he grows older we can start getting into the progressions. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Officer Buckle is a roly-poly bloke, dedicated to teaching schoolchildren important safety tips, such as never put anything in your ear and never stand on a swivel chair. The problem is, Officer Buckle's school assemblies are dull, dull, dull, and the children of Napville just sleep, sleep, sleep. That is, until Gloria the police dog is invited along! Stealthily pantomiming each safety tip behind Officer Buckle's back, Gloria wins the children's hearts. Meanwhile Officer Buckle assumes the cheers and laughter are all for him. As the master comedian Jerry Lewis once explained, every slapstick artist needs a straight man! Children will be highly entertained by the laugh-out-loud, adorable illustrations in this 1996 Caldecott Medal winner, while learning the value of teamwork and a pawful of nifty safety tips. This is an excellent book for k-2 classes. Our school has joined our Police Department in (adopt a police dog). This means that we help raise money for the police department to help provide care and the tools that our police dog might need. This book helped our students understand the relationship between the policeman and his dog. The children understood that policeman are there to help us in many ways and giving safety tips is one of the ways they can help us.I like the fact that this book is also mentioned in The Mailbox magazine and you can go on-line to the Mailbox site and get worksheets for the students to do in relation to the story. It is worth buying.
5-0 out of 5 stars Always Entertaining
We've had this book a few years now, and my son, now 6, never tires of it. It's one of his favorites, and I really like it too. As other reviewers have mentioned, the pictures are great, and there's so much detail in them that they're fun to look at again and again.

If you don't know the name Ezra Jack Keats, then you just might miss out on one of the ultimate treasures of the literary world. This simple story of young Peter is a delight to read any time of the year as the protaganist wakes up to a snow-filled scene that he explores and enjoys. He even tries to capture a bit to bring home! Read this with your young ones as they anticipate the coming season or read it by the fire as you dry your feet after a winter day.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, reviewed by Joshua, Mrs. Bhola's second grade
If you like snow you would like the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. It is about the adventures of Peter going out in the snow. I like when Peter put the snow on his head. I liked it because I like books on snow. Check it at your local library.

Editorial Review

Poor Miss Clavel! In "an old house in Paris that was covered withvines," Miss Clavel oversees the education of 12 little girls, the littlest of whom isthe mischievous Madeline. Despite her size, she fearlessly pooh-poohs the tiger in thezoo and frightens Miss Clavel with her adventurous antics. When she awakens the entirehouse with her plaintive cries in the middle of the night, Doctor Cohn whisks theappendicitis-stricken Madeline off to the hospital where, some two hours later, sheawakens to find a scar on her stomach! The scar (not to mention the flowers, toys, andcandy given to Madeline by her father) proves quite interesting to the rest of MissClavel's charges when they make a special trip to visit her. Ludwig Bemelmans's liltingrhymes are music to children's ears, and the quirky, oddly perfect drawings of the girls in"two straight lines" lend an enticing Parisian flavor to this perennialchildren's favorite. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I am not a fan of France, nor of Madeline, but this book was given as a gift and I have to say my daughter begs for it and I enjoy it more than I thought. In fact, I am even going to purchase more Madeline books. My only quibble is that the rhyming is often a bit off but to be honest, I think that makes the book more enjoyable and more reflective of the time in which it was actually written. It is a classic after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ludwig Bemelmans introduces little Madeline to the world
I have had several occasions to read "Madeline" over the years, yet had never read anything about her.So learning that she had celebrated her 60th birthday was something of a surprise because I did not think of this first story of that irrepressible little girl as something that was first published on the eve of World War II.But the bigger surprise was learning that "Madeline" was not originally written and published in France, which I had always assumed was the case. That means all of those times I was reading this book and wondering what it would read like in the orignal French, I was completely off the mark.Live and learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Loves Madeline
Madeline is the story of a fearless little girl lucky enough to grow up in Paris, France. She lives with 11 other girls in "an old house...covered in vines", and she has a wonderful time scaring her care-giver, Miss Clavel. In the middle of the night, Madeline is rushed out of the old house and to a hospital, frightening her housemates but she somehow manages to make them jealous of her stay there. The book is easy to follow and the pictures are clear - they're all VERY yellow, but are detailed and help tell the story. A classic everyone should read at least once.I would think anyone between kindergarten and maybe fourth grade would enjoy the story, with the two older grades able to read it themselves in addition to having it read to them. ...
