5-0 out of 5 stars Best in the Kel series
Of the four Protector of the Small books, "Squire" is definitely the best. Kel finally leaves the simple structure of school and being a page and begins to mature and grow up into a young woman who is beginning to get a glimpse of the real world.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yeah well....
I love this book becauseKel becomes Raoul's squire. In the Alanna books, he isn't a very well developed character, and I was really happy to see him reappear, especially as Kel's knight master. I was dissapointed that Kel and Neal didn't fall in love, but that would have been too much like the Alanna books with Jon and Alanna. Besides, Neal is too cynical for Kel. She is completely a fighting knight and Neal is mostly a desk night, like myles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ok, ANOTHER GREAT ONE!
Yes, truth to be told, I would rather it was Neal and not Cleon who she develops a romantic interest in, but that's life. It is very good though!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique way to be Airborn
Matt Cruse, the star of Kenneth Oppel's Airborn, is landsick.Aboard the airship Aurora, he is always fine, but on the ground, not so.Matt is a cabin boy on Aurora and, in only his second year as a cabin boy, he rescues a man from a hot air balloon. When the man is dying, he talks of beautiful flying creatures.A year later with the man's granddaughter, Kate, Matt starts a quest to uncover these mysterious creatures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Up Up and away!
This is an excellent adventure story! Matt Cruse has spent most of his life in the air ...on a luxury passenger airship. He rescues a dying balloonist, meets the balloonists granddaughter, sees mysterious flying creatures, and takes on pirates. This action story has it all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mmm....dirigibles.
I found this book so engaging that I finished it in a week. There are airships. There are pirates. There are mysterious creatures. There is more swashbuckling than you can shake a fake cutlass at. There is so much goodness in this book that I want to eat it just to get every last bit of goodness out and have it for my very own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much suspense.
This was probably the worst book in the series when i read the first three books i was like ya this author rights pretty good. I must say i was really excited to read this book. Now i find there is'nt really any cool new charecters the only one i saw that was good was Henna and she died. In this book they didn't use basically any of there magic. This book didn't really have the other three in it I mean i know this is briars book but in others they had close to equal parts but in ths book only about 1/8 really had the other charecters. THe ending wasn't good either because i'm used to seeing them combine there powers but in this book they didn't and the blue pox was very good disease and i loved how it was formed but get real what kind of huge disease has as simple a name as bluuepox. This book also didn't have gorse's cooking I mean come on gorse was cool. And what happened to there training isn't it supposed yo talk about this stuff i mean they didn't learn anything so now i want the author to write one more book for this and you know have it on winding circle talking about what they learned and then have something so powerful happen that the entire world is at stake like lightbridge is planning on taking over winding circle or somethin. Well this is my review.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting conclusion to the series
This book is the final chapter in Pierce's Circle of Magic series. When Briar discovers a street urchin with a strange new disease, he is quick to notify his teacher, Rosethorn. The sickness, later dubbed the Blue Pox, begins to spread and soon becomes a widespread epidemic. As hundreds of people die, Briar must work together with Rosethorn and Dedicate Crane to find a cure for the new disease. When Rosethorn catches the sickness, Briar races against time, desperate to find a cure before his teacher dies.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best for suspence!
This is by far my favorite book in the Circle of Magic books. In the book, one of the four young mages living in Dicipline cottage, the plant-mage Briar, is confronted with the horrors of his former life as a street rat. His street friend Flick comes down with a mysterious illness that spreads to infect all of Emelan. Not only must Briar fear for the life of Flick, but for the lives of his foster-sisters, Sandry, Daja, and Tris. What if the plague reaches Winding Circle? What if he catches it himself? When the only person closer to Briar than the girls comes down with the plague, it will take the strength of all four mages to avert disaster. Can they find a cure before it's too late? You'll have to read and find out! This book demonstrates just how far Briar has come since he's lived at Winding Circle. It is beautifly written by one of my favorite authors, Tamora Pierce. I would recomemend all her books. Happy Reading! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Girl Power
This is the first book in a set of four that is the third set of four in a series. The series starts with Alanna the First Adventure. In each set of four we meet a strong young girl fighting to discover how to be a woman on her own terms. In this set we meet Kel.With the support of her family and friends she works to balance her wish to be a knight (1 of only 2 girls ever) and her desire to still be a girl who wears dresses and enjoys being a girl.

This is a very vey good book, about a young girl who is the firt gil in tortall oficially to start training to become a Knight, and about all the difficulties she has to face, for example proving herself against all the other boys training to become knights. It a very good book, you will absolutly love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review by a young adult reader
Well, the way I discovered Tamora Pierce's book 'The Circle of Magic; Tris' book' was by going into the library at my school. I was really looking for my friends and searched the library (probably making a lot of noise as the librarian kept scowling at me) I was about to leave, when I saw her get up towards me. I panicked so I quickly ducked behind a shelf to hide, as well as knocking off several books. I picked them up and the last one to put back was 'Tris' Book'which caught my eye and so I quickly read the first page, so far ao good! It was just the kind of book a girl like me likes, as well as a few boys, it was also about magic which would annoy my dad so I thought that I might as well take it out, the librarian had already gone off somewhere so I was in the clear. When I got back to my class, without the librarian biting my head off, I got back to reading it. It only seemed like a minute after I had lost myself into the first two chapters, and it was a fabulous book! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone. It was so great, I even failed my small Latin test. I was so into the story and plot, that I didn't even care!
5-0 out of 5 stars fun book
Tris' book written by Tamora Pierce is a very suspenseful book filled with lots of action. Set in medieval times, this book really draws you into this time period; it is the second addition to a group of four books that are all wonderful to read. Tris' book is a great book for anyone if you are just looking for a fun, fast book to read. Also, it does not contain any great vocabulary problems so younger kids will not have trouble.
4-0 out of 5 stars "You Upset Her When She's Already Frightened..."
This volume is the second in a four-part series called "Circle of Magic" and is also titled "The Power in the Storm". Set in a fantasy realm over a one-year period, Tamora Pierce tells the story of four young mages who are brought together to live at the temple community of Winding Circle, to control and properly use their various powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keladry: Protector of the Small
Many years have past since Alanna the Lioness secretly became a night and the King decided to allow girls to become nights, but not a single girl has signed up to be a page. In a way it makes sense, Tortall, although much more accepting, has not been magically reformed, and many people accuse Alanna of getting her shield through magecraft or trickery. When Kel announces that she wants to be a knight, she is shocked at the amount of resistance that she receives. She is to be put on probation for a year to see is she can "handle it" and many of the other pages are insulted that such a change has taken place. Still, she pushes herself through the teasing, the unfairness, and the vandalism using training that she has received in that Yamani islands (think Japan), which teachers her to remain calm and accept pain. Still, there are some things that she cannot accept, and that is the bullying of younger pages. Although she is not outright bullied like Alanna is, she watches as young Page's around her and tortured by the older boys. This is something that she will not stand for.
1-0 out of 5 stars very very bad
Okay...I will admit that I haven't fully read this book. I started reading and gave up in disgust. The 'prejudice' that Kel gets seems forced. Tortall has had a 'female' Kings Champion for ten years and the guards to the Mother Goddess are females, so the 'weak female' prejudice doesn't ring true, especially from the man who has to train her. Yes it's a medieval world, yet the queen can fight and so does her bodyguard, the queen's riders are amongst the best fighters in Tortall and many women swell their ranks, so why would people be against female Knights... Surely with the history of Tortall, people would know that some women can fight.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tamora Peirce is a (...)GENIUS!
I loved this series. It blew me away. I especially enjoy stories in which a girl is a heroine and not a guy. Although I've read plenty of stories where the girl is the hero, not one has begun to measure up to this one. The First Test is a great beginning to a well-woven, compelling series. This series is a once-in-a-life-time treat! The love story is innocent yet touching and doesn't suffocate the action and twists (of course I'm talking about the series as a whole at this point). Kel is a likeable detirmined heroine who has her priorities straightened out. I highly recomend this series and if you like fantasy, you'll become a lifetime fan to Peirce. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever!!
I had to also read other books for the Summer Reading during my own time, and I borrowed this book from the library. I'm so glad that I started off by picking up the first book of the Song of the Lioness quartet (Alanna: The First Adventure). After I read the first book, I was hooked and read all the other 3 books in the quartet in 2 days. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!! You won't regret reading this. But please read the first book, Alanna: The First Adventure, because this book that I'm reviewing is the 4th book in the quartet. If you read this or any of the other books besides the 1st book first, then you won't understand them. But please just give it a try and buy/borrow this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unstoppable finish to a remarkable quartet.
Alanna of Trebond and Olau has accomplished much over the years. She cleverly disguised herself as a male as she became a squire, then moved onto a knighthood, in which her gender was finally discovered. But that did not stop Alanna from becoming one of the greatest swordsmen (swordswomen) to grace the earth, and only helped her to be accepted by the people of the Bazhir tribe, who christened her The Woman Who Rides Like A Man. And though she has been named a hero, Alanna feels that she has not built much up for herself to return home to. Now, as she begins her quest to recover the Dominion Jewel, located at The Roof of the World, Alanna begins to think that maybe the life of a hero isn't what she wants anymore. But reaching the Dominion Jewel must be done, for it holds a great deal of power that can be used for good, as long as it is placed in the right hands. And Prince Jonathan's are a perfect fit for the jewel. Besides, Tortall is in grave danger, and Alanna must return immediately to help save it from the hands of evil. For Duke Roger, Alanna's arch-enemy is back from the grave, and more powerful than ever before; and defeating him will take more than Alanna's Gift alone. She will have to draw on the help from her friends, as well as the Dominion Jewel to save the only home she's ever really known, as well as the people she loves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A StrongFemale Character
We got to know Daja outside of her Trader or Circle identities. She emerged as very powerful, smart and capable. This book and Tris's book were the best of this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Book
I absoluteley adore this book along with all the other books in this series. I love this one most of all. It is great!

3-0 out of 5 stars Its pretty good...
Daja's book, by Tamora Peirce, is a series of three books. The other two books to this series are Sandry's Book and Tris's Book. Daja's Book is made for intermediate readers due to magic phrases and terms, which are sometimes hard to understand. This is a story about Daja, her friends, and teachers going to a town to help out. With Daja and her two friends having problems with their magic and the forest fire nearby, they have a handful to deal with. That handful might be just too much for the three teens. Fires blare across the lands and inch closer to what three young teens learn to call home. Droughts cover the land, but yet a glacier, with running water underneath, still thrives close by. How can that be in the magic world? Daja, Tris and Briar, three young teens who are still awaiting their almighty purpose in life, are looking to help out. Their magic, yet separate, works as one. The novel walks the reader through their assignment of helping a village, that for the time being, they learn to call home. The want to go to their real home thrives hard, but the need to help still overpowers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pierce's worst Tortall book...But that doesn't mean it's bad!
I am a very large fan of all of Tamora Pierces Tortall books. This particular one is a step below the others, but don't get me wrong, it is extremely good!
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Granted, Tamora is a good writer, and the action is exciting, but if you, like me, don't enjoy watching main characters move in and out of sexual relations with each other and others without long-term commitment, you will find this a disappointing read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review for Alanna: The First Adventure
Alanna: The First Adventure is an exciting epic about a girl who desperately wants to become a knight. She decides to switch places with her brother who absolutely does not want to become a knight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan, or Alanna?
Well, well, well. "I don't want to fall in love. I just want to be a warrior maiden" kinda went up in smoke, didn't it? Alanna is starting to feel differently about some of her friends-quite noticeably, in fact. But it wouldn't do to fall in love, now would it? But Alanna deals with her new feelings admirably, as well as her new role as a squire to none other than the heir to the throne of Tortall, her good friend Jonathan, one of the few who knows "Alan"'s true identity. Also, a great dislike bordering on hatred, mingled with fear, is formed for a certain sly cousin of the prince's-Duke Roger, the most powerful sorceror in the Eastern Lands. Sure, he's charming, smart, and wealthy-but Alanna feels like she is the only one that expects he's up to something. After several very mysterious near-disasters, Alanna is getting more and more agitated, but is still unable to prove anytying. Then, disaster strikes, soon after her Ordeal of Knighthood, one of her three fears(which you will learn about in the first chapter)and Alanna challenges Duke Roger to a duel, or risks the deaths of the rulers of Tortall and their councillors. Also, by a mere stroke of bad luck, Alanna's identity slips out-nothing too bad, don't worry, Alanna's dignity is still in tact-while dueling with Duke Roger, and so after the duel(whether she wins or loses, regardless)Alanna plans to go to the South to let the court steam and fume over her big secret. This book is probably my favorite of the whole series, because Alanna finally learns how to cope with love(not that I agree with that)and also her fear of her own magic. Readers will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is the second book in Tamora Pierce's Quartet about The Lioness, the King's Champion. In this book, Alanna is still disguised as a boy, although Prince Jonathan, whom she serves as squire, knows her secret. This book tells about her years as a squire,up through herordeal of knighthood.
5-0 out of 5 stars IT IS THE BEST!
i think Tamora Pierce really out did herself. Out of all the books shes written so far this has to be one of my favorites. Alanna is a wonderful hero. she is just discovering in this book how much fun it is to be a women, she also is becoming more of a hero. ... Read more

Editorial Review

To the great joy of her many fans, Tamora Pierce with this book begins a new saga of Tortall to add to The Song of the Lioness Quartet, the Immortals Quartet, and The Protector of the Small tetralogy. At the center of each of these books is always a strong and resourceful young woman who masters the arts of swordplay and knightly warfare in the magical medieval country of Tortall. Alianne, or Aly, daughter of the warrior queen Alanna the Lioness, has all these skills, but also a delicious sense of humor, which serves her well when she is chosen by the trickster god Kyprioth to serve as his secret agent and a slave for a year in the embattled Copper Isles. There the dark-skinned natives, or raka, have been conquered and crushed by the laurin, light-skinned people from the mainland. The burning raka resentment is fueled by prophecies of a twice royal queen who will free them, aided by the "wise one, the cunning one, the strong one, the warrior, and the crows." Just how each of the colorful characters and Aly herself fit into this prophecy and Kyprioth’s tricky plan keeps readers guessing. Aly plots to show her skill at spying as she flirts with the god and is courted by Nawat, a crow transformed into a handsome young man, who is puzzled when she rejects his attempts to mate-feed her with grubs and ants. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful new book by Pierce
I read this book, and the sequel, quite a while ago, and now I decided to read it again. I was happily surprised, since I was out for something to read for the weekend, and it's pretty different from the other of Pierce's tales.

Alianne Cooper is at the age where she needs to figure out what she wants to do with her life. She has been trained in the ways of a spy for her whole life, from her father, George Cooper, Co-Spymaster of Tortall, the other spymaster being her grandfather. Her mother, Alanna, is the Lioness, legendary warrior and King's Champion. One of her brothers is training to become a mage.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a gr8t BOOK!
Alanna of Trebond, whom we saw in the books, In the Hand of the Goddess and Alanna:The First Adventure, returns in this third book in the series. This is as good as others, but I (Only me! You might like it) found this book sort of boring. I think it is sort of like a rest from all the action, but I LIKE actions (Especially if that is of Alanna *^^*) Pierce continues the action in the last book, the Lioness Rampant. It sort of doesn't feel so exciting, and I think excitement and action is the best kind of material for Alanna (and her famous redhead temper!) In all, this book was satisfactory for me, at least, though it was not absolutely great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woman who Rides Like a Man is spellbinding!
Women have been portrayed as weak, conniving, and inferior. Alanna breaks all of the typical stereotypes to become the first female knight in over a century after eight years as disguising herself as a boy. Alanna is made the first female shaman of the Bloody Hawk a tribe of the Bazhir, natives of the Tortallan desert, and this book describes her journeys, her her triumphs, her losses, and even newfound love. I definetly enjoyed it, and I will read all of Ms. Pierce's books if they meet the standards Woman who Rides Like a Man has set. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Keep Me Hooked...
I fell in love with the first book at summer camp back in the day, and when I came home I dutifully waited for each new installment. But by the time the fourth and final book, 'Lady Knight' came out, I was disappointed. Instead of keeping me excited and intrigued as the others had done, I quickly found myself making excuses not to read it. While the plot does move forward, I felt that there was too much repetition with the friendships and all.
4-0 out of 5 stars "I Told You She Would Come, the Protector of the Small..."
Finally, Keladry of Mindelin ("Kel" to her friends) has completed her training and been dubbed Lady Knight of Tortall in this final installment of "The Protector of the Small" quartet. She's conquered bullies, prejudice, kidnappings, skirmishes, the scepticism of Lord Wyldon, and the terrifying Ordeal; the chamber that all squires must endure if they are to be knighted. She's all ready to throw her weight into the Scanran War, especially considering the vision that the Chamber of Ordeal granted her: Kel knows the identity and appearance of the man who is behind the monstrous killing machines that have been plaguing her people. Made from the iron-covered bones of giants and geared by the trapped spirits of children, the terrible machines are creating severe losses for Tortall and Kel is eager to be rid of them once and for all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Okay. First off, I would like to clear the air about a few things.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Fantasy for Everyone!
Alanna of Trebond decides to be a knight instead of a lady and switches places with her brother to go the palace and train as the first Lady Knight in over a century! There's one problem, though... Girls aren't allowed to be knights! That doesn't stop her, though, she just hides it and keeps trying, although she does have a little trouble! As she battles through to win her shield, she meets many new friends, fights demon-like creatures and kills her arch-nemesis, the great sorcerer, Roger, Duke of Conte. After she wins her shield, she goes to the Bazhir desert and trains young mages for the Bloody Hawk tribe, and if that isn't enough, she later fights her way to the Dominion Jewel, a jewel that can call the very ground to fight enemies of Tortall. She just wanted to be a knight, but instead, she became the highest knight in the entire realm of Tortall, The King's Champion!!!
