5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book to Own
I accidentally picked this book out for my son (I liked the picture on the front). My son is almost one but my husband and I have read this book to him numerous times. He really enjoys the story and he smiles when he sees Little Owen.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Relatable
This book was a great medium to reinforce the message to our son that we love him and are "with him" while he is at school. We also ordered Buddy Bear, My First Day at Preschool (DVD) and Blue Goes to School (book). Each were great! Good luck. The best advice we got was 1) make sure your kid knows you think his school is a great and that you want him to be there and 2) try dropping off and setting short goals: I will come back for snack (30 minutes) then leave again and come back for Yard...etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Little Story
This is my 3 year old sons' favorite book.We have read it so many times that he can recite some of the text with me.This book is a naptime/bedtime tradition in our house. It really engages my son and it calms him right down and gets him ready for sleep.A great buy for any toddler! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale of God's Love
Using the kind of high-value creativity we have come to expect from the Veggie Tales creator, Phil Vischer, this story offers a touching and magnificent view of God's love. Vischer offers this tale in a cunningly captivating style that will enthrall readers, no matter what age they might be. Outstanding illustrations of this story by Justin Gerard ably illustrate Vischer's prose. This book belongs in the hands of every home where parents desire to instill in their children the reality that God views us in a much different way than we might normally view each other. This book belongs in the hands of every professional who deals with children. It sets an example of how to relate solid truth in a way that penetrates to the core of one's being. Every church library should also purchase this book to add to the delight of its young readers and old. As Sydney says at the end of the book, speaking of what he learned from his encounter with God, "First of all, he loves me. Secondly, he loves me. And thirdly -- He loves me." This book would clearly make an excellent birthday or holiday gift for grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving story with a poignant message for kids and adults alike
Never a fan of Christian books, it was the beautifully illustrated cover that first caught my attention and caused me to pick up this book. But it was the writing and the message behind the story that captured me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Two Piggies
He's back! Phil Vischer, co-creator of Veggie Tales, has written Sydney and Norman, a children's story about two very different pigs who receive invitations to meet God. Both pigs accept the invitation. The surprise that awaits each and the lesons learned are central to this modern adaptation of one of the parables of Jesus.

5-0 out of 5 stars An All-Time Favorite!
This adventure with Toot and Puddle is one of my all-time favorites. It is an adorable story about two friends, one who loves to travel the world and the other who loves just staying at home in Woodcock Pocket, USA. The postcards that Toot sends Puddle from his world travels are cute and humorous! The illustrations in this book are incredible. This is a book that adults and children alike will enjoy together. I never get tired of reading this one over and over. It is a book my children will keep and pass on to their children!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Toot & Puddle
The sunny and vibrant watercolor illustrations caught my attention first. The little pigs, Toot and Puddle had so much expression and character, it was impossible not to smile. Then I opened the book and the story line was no less delightful. The idea that it is fine to pursue your own star and return to connect with family and friends is a worthy one, especially in this day and age.And the adventures of Toot were such fun to discover, as were all the activities of Puddle at home.Neither one had an uneventful life. They loved what they were doing and they loved each other. The sheer mirth that I felt reading and following the illustrations was great and I'm sure a child would feel the same.Holly Hobbie has rendered these little guys totally irresistible to all who open the cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic
Toot & Puddle demonstrates different interests of two friends. Both of them enjoy what they are doing while Toot shared each adventure by sending postcards to his best friends.I like the moral of friendship behind what could be easily learnt by a toddler. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Babe is a sensitive soul, deeply loyal to those who are kind to him. So when he is taken in by Farmer Hogget's sheepdog, Fly, it's only natural that he would want to follow in his foster mum's paw-steps. Even with Babe's considerable handicaps as a sheepdog--namely, that he's a pig--he manages to overcome all with his earnestly polite and soft-spoken ways, proving once again that might doesn't always make right. After saving the sheep from rustlers and wild dogs, Babe convinces Hogget that his idea of becoming a sheep-pig "b'aint so stupid" as it might look. But neither Hogget nor Babe, nor anyone else, could have predicted what follows.Read more

In this book, a pig was a prize to be won at a fair in sheep country.Mr. Hogget played the game for the pig. Mr. Hogget told his wife that he played the game for the pig.Mrs. Hogget said I'd like a pig. We can feed him scraps and eat him for Christmas dinner.Fly was training her four puppies when she saw the pig that Mr. Hogget won named Babe.Babe was adopted by Fly and soon learned to herd ducks, chickens, and other farm animals. He really wanted to meet the flock of sheep so he could be like Fly.Will he ever become a useful farm animal instead of a Christmas dinner?Babe saved the flock and convinced them that they would never eat him.Hogget was training Babe for the Grand Challenge Sheep Dog Trials.Mr.Hogget said to his wife see the telly and took off with Babe and Fly..... I reckoned this book for all ages, because it is a cute little book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Maggie's Pig Review
Mr. Hogget, a sheep rancher, won a pig named Babe at the fair, very much like the one I went to in Sheridan, WY!When Babe came to the ranch, he was a very little pig, so Fly, the sheep dog, decided to mother him along with her five puppies.Babe was soon calling Fly, Mum.Babe also became friends Maaa, an old ewe who at the time needed to be taken care of separately.Maaa was always complaining on how sheepdog treated sheep.Babe asked, "Mum, will you train me to be a sheep-pig?"She said, "Yes."So, Fly started to train him how to be a sheep-pig on ducks, and soon he was fairly good. One day, when Maaa was back in the pasture with the flock and Fly and Farmer Hogget were at market, he decided to go meet the flock. It was chaos! There were sheep rustlers there!Babe ceased them from stealing all the sheep. From then, on Farmer Hogget let Babe come with him and Fly to check the sheep. The first time he came with them Farmer Hogget tried to get him to work the sheep. He did it perfectly! From then on he did most of the sheep work. One day, he decided to go visit the sheep.Again it was chaos! This time it wasn't rustlers, but worriers! They had Maaa down! Before they could kill her, Babe chased them away.Maaa died soon after.Farmer Hogget was readying babe for the sheep dog trials! Will he win?I recommend Babe the Gallant Pig, because it's very outstanding, exciting, and suspenseful!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will Love Reading This Book With Your Child
One of the sweetest children's books I've seen this year. The illustrations are so beautiful and the story is so charming you'll come back to it again and again. The plot is simple enough for the four and five year old set, but there is enough subtle content and gentle humor to the story to satisfy the six and seven year olds too. This book would even appeal to an adult friend -- especially one who loves to travel. Finally, if you are a fan of Olivia you will feel right at home with Toot and Puddle. ... Read more

Michaela Muntean, Do Not Open This Book! (Scholastic, 2006)
5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED this book!
Michaela Muntean is one of my favorite authors, and I have read a LOT of her work. Do Not Open This Book is excellent, and I think it thoroughly deserves 5 stars. The drawing and writing in this book are of fine quality and enjoyable to the reader. I laughed out loud at the silly illustrations for there are many hidden details. The author uses a clever trick to use the reader's name in the story that Pig writes. No matter how easy your name is, Pig says he can't spell it and makes the reader insert it into the story! It is the kind of book that you will want to read over and over again! I love the little bugs that follow Pig around and mimic his expressions! People of all ages are sure to love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TWIST TO AN OLD FAVORITE
The story of the Three Little Pigs has been around for years and years and few children, nor adults, for that matter do not know of it.Here we have the roles of the "bad guy" completely reversed. The kids love this one and think it is truely funny.I did like the fact that the wolves did not receive the bad press that they normally receive in such tales and I did like the fact that even though the Big Bad Pig was truely bad in the beginning, he did indeed have redeeming features. The illustrations were great and the text followed the illustrations perfectly. This is a fun book to read to the class.I highly recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story, distracting pop-ups
The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig has been a favorite story in our household for many years. We love it!I can't recommend this story enough!!!!The big bad pig is a tyrant and the wolves are such ingenious engineers, it makes the Big Bad Pig look even more formidable with his sledgehammer and dynamite. I recently purchased the pop-up version for a friend, but can honestly say I enjoyed reading the ordinary book more than the pop-up version. The pop-ups were very distracting and I think it takes away the energy from the story and the reader becomes disengaged, trying to fiddle with all the contraptions.I vote for the good old-fashioned book version any time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Bad Pig is Good

5-0 out of 5 stars poppleton always a pleasure
My daughter, now 7 going into 2nd grade, & I have been reading together all her life, but lots since we started going to the library when she was about 2.Poppleton was an early discovery, long before she was learning to read herself. The short tales appealed to her as a preschooler, & now as a young reader. The illustrations are darling, but the character himself is utterly charming. He just makes you smile, sort of like Winnie the Pooh or Ziggy. My only complaint is that there are not enough Poppleton stories!I recommend anything Cynthia Rylant writes - try Little Whistle for example.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poppleton
It's a great book to read. I think it's a funny book. It is very exciting! My favorite part is when he says, " I sleep 24 different ways." That was funny. It is a good book. It's cool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Among The Best In A Classic Series
Cynthia Rylant's three early-reader series (Henry and Mudge, Mister Putter and Tabby, and Poppleton) are almost uniformly excellent, but Poppleton has always been my particular favorite. They have a slightly off-kilter feeling to them that makes me smile (and my daughter laugh out loud) even on the fifth or sixth time through.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Precioso y divertido / Cute and fun
This book (in English) was one of the favorites of my best friend's little girl for years, and the simple premise of "be careful what you get yourself into" amuses even my grown friends. The story of the mouse who wants a cookie (which requires a glass of milk, which calls for ...) and can't stop there, is a familiar plot presented in a fresh way with fun illustrations. The Spanish translation has a very natural feel. I was delighted to find this translation, as I had told my boyfriend (now my husband) about it on an early date, and ever after he persisted in asking, "How did that story go? The one about the little mouse?" whenever I tried to get him to stop being fresh. :)A delightful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Young Readers
I really enjoyed this book because it has so much to offer. First, the illustrations provide clues to what's going to happen in the story. Second, the lesson in the book about gender roles is invaluble to both young males and females. In this day in age, boys and girls need to know that they are equals in many aspects. When I read the book to a group of students they really enjoyed telling me where all the clues were in the pictures. The read aloud also facilitated a discussion about gender roles, as the last page in the book caused some confusion for the children (I won't give it away you'll just have to buy it).

5-0 out of 5 stars i still remember
i was read this book when i was really little and a had a flashback to it the other day. i still feel guilty about the story and i think i really thought that i would turn into a pig if i didn't help out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden and not hidden messages
I am a 2nd grade teacher who just received this book as a gift.Today I read it with my students for the first time.We loved it!Not only does the story have a good message that everyone in the family should pitch in and help, but the illustrations are wonderful. It took 2 viewings to get through all of the hidden pigs.I also think it is especially poignant that Mrs. Pigget has no face at the beginning of the book because she has no other identity except to serve her husband and sons.Reading this book led to a great class discussion and a writing assignment.A gem for any classroom or family collection. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I am also in the minority
I would agree, it did not flow well at all.The story line bounces back and forth not sticking to a character and not going into detail with that character.Short I know, but did not flow.Adorable idea, and I agree the illustrations are great, but do not recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute treasure
This is the sweetest Christmas book I've seen in a long time. Toot is stuck trying to get home to Woodcock Pocket in time for Christmas Eve, while Puddle is busy missing his friend and readying the house for Christmas. The illustrations are stunning and the story of their reunion is a treasure. A sure-to-be favorite for 3-7 year olds who are still enchanted with all of the simple joys and magic of Christmas, and a pleasure for adults to read over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Stars -- a 5 Oink for Toot & Puddle

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning superlatives while enjoying a good story
In a loose retelling of the story of the Three Little Pigs, author Rick Walton provides a romp through the world of superlatives.Join Pig, Pigger, and Piggest as they build their homes from the mud, muddier, and muddiest places.Of course there are the mean witch, witcher, and witchest, who seek to bring trouble into the lives of the pigs, but in a surprise ending everything turns out for the best for everyone.A fun book that is sure to keep children entertained Pig Pigger Piggest gets a high, higher, highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching-er and-est
As a first grader teacher, this is the BEST book to really drive home the comparison of big, bigger, and biggest (and similar ideas). The students really enjoyed predicting what the next -er and -est would be once they heard "cheap sheep", "tall wall", "squeak", "cat", "witch", "huff and puff", etc.The story line was even OK for a children's book, but it's definitely worth it just for learning the skill of adding -er and -est to words!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Clever and great for the classroom
I have a growing collection of works that are variations of classic folkand fairytales. This is one of the cleverest reworkings of the 3 LittlePigs I've seen.In the literacy program I am working on in Chicago PublicSchools, we are using this book in several intermediate grade classrooms asan engaging way to teaching a point of grammar (comparative and superlativeforms) and as one of a series of 3 Little Pig stories we are comparing--theend goal is to turn the kids into authors of their own "fracturedfairy tale." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, engrossing series.
I was seven or eight when Ifound the Freddy books on tape at my library.I checked one out and am still listening and reading them five years later. My parents constantly wonder why I read such easy and, to them, childish books.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Teen's Point of View
The Freddy books are so great! They are especially good for reading out loud and the whole family will find them exciting and hilarious. They're good books for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational and entertaining:dynamite!
Brooks wrote the Freddy series between 1927 and 1958.They combine superb character development, unbelievable educational content, and generally mesmerizing entertainment. They are appropriate for reading to children as young as five or six, and make excellent readers for children from nine to as old as early teens.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful visuals
I love reading the Toot & Puddle books to my daughter. The art is beautiful and is full of details not found very often these days. This story has a moral and is a nice segue to the conversation about "being yourself." And who doesn't want that?
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely New Children's Book Starring Toot and Puddle
Opal has decided to visit her friends Toot and Puddle at their home in Woodcock Pocket. However, instead of arriving by herself, Opal has brought along her new friend Daphne. Daphne is a very special pig who can do everything the best, including standing on her head, dancing, holding her breath, playing the violin, and more. This begins to make Opal a bit jealous, for she wants to be the best at something. However, when Opal begins outshining Daphne at various activities, the tables turn.
