Teacher's Grade: A+
This is one of the best picture books I've ever read aloud.The combination of Charlotte Pomerantz's whimsical verse, and James Marshall's watercolor illustrations work very well together, creating a book that is captivating, humorous, and pure delight from start to finish.
Wonderfully engaging for the smallest ones
My 2.5 year old twins love the book and the 5 year old still does (I began reading it to her when she was 3).Very well written and clever.A fun book to read over and over again (although you must do the voices)

The second time around

I Would Care For a Sand Witch!
Many years ago, my school librarian read this book to my kindergarden class. I cannot speak for my peers, but I, for one, loved this story. I liked that it had a dynamic protagonist who clearly learns from his mistake to improve upon his greedy mannerisms. I was so afraid of the evil Sand Witch at first and I was worried the pig would never escape! But then I realized she was actually generously teaching him a lesson that would make him a better person... err, pig. Furthermore, this book was my first encounter with a good pun, and I have been developing a healthy appreciation for them ever since. So get out your credit card and have this charming tale shipped to your sty right away!

A moral and fun word play
This is a cute little book, and Pinkerton the pig is a good character.The moral of the story can't be argued with.The word play of "sandwich" and "Sandwitch" is clever.I like the idea of the pig learning what it means to care for someone, too.My child got tired of it quickly; however, it's an inexpensive book.Fine for preschoolers and beginning readers. ... The Fire Breathing Pig!!
I am beginning to realize that I was severely deprived as a young child.The little corner library where I got my first library card actually had a pretty poor selection of books for young readers.As a result, I grew up thinking that there were only a few Freddy the Pig books.Actually Walter Brooks wrote 26 of them.That makes Freddy every bit the equal of the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew.Many of these books are out of print now, and hard to find, but The Overlook Press has been gradually returning them to circulation.Set in the rural Northeast at a time (the late twenties and thirties), the books recall a time when the world seemed simpler and more full of grace."Freddy and the Dragon" is the last Freddy novel, published in the year of Brooks death, 1958. The Pigs are Silly

I like this book because,it's one of the books you want to read over and over again. A Not so Dirty Pet
The princess gets a pig for her birthday but the queen doesn't like it.The queen thinks it's dirty.This book is about figuring out ways for the queen to like the pig.I think this is a very, very funny book, because there are three pictures of poo-poo.

"Beware of this book!"

Breath of Fresh Air
I've never laughed so much reading a book to my kids. The words are witty and the pictures are hilarious. Oh and the kids like it, too.

Not your average PiggieWiggies.

My 2 year old loves this book
What a fun book! It adds an extra storyline to the popular Piggy nursery rhyme. Everyone we've given this book to has loved it too. Though the book is pretty durable, when my daughter was younger, she did rip many of the pop-ups. That's okay -- we just bought another one now that she doesn't rip books anymore. : )

My son is Obsessed with this Book
My son absolutely loves this book and has since he was about 10 months (he is 19 months now).We didn't even realize when we first received it as a gift that the little toes moved (duh!).He did it on his own.He tries to grab the piggy that pops up before we pop the piggy back into hiding.I'm also buying a second one because he has "used" this book almost every day for the last 9 months and has beaten it up pretty bad.I can't wait for him to see the new copy -- he'll be so excited.Anyway, it is so unpredictable which books kids will love.I think this one has been the reliable favorite of my son.

dumpy the bomb
dumpy la rue is one pigs tale of the bombing in nagasaki. watch as he tries to stop the airplanes from dropping the bomb (he fails of course) then he deals with the stress of vaporized relatives and comatose friends. see real pictures of the gruessome effects of radiation. i loved this book, it teaches kids the reality of nuclear bombs.

Let me explain to you the process that I follow when I review picture books.First, I read tons of professional reviews of the newest books coming out.Then I systematically make a list and work my way through it, often including old standbys and books from my own youth that I'd like to reexamine.THEN I finally check out a book or two and review it for fun.I almost never deviate from this pattern except on special occasions.Such an occasion arose just the other day when I was pawing through my local library.I was in a new library attempting to find some of the books on my list when the title, "Dumpy La Rue" caught my eye.I'd never heard of "Dumpy La Rue".I was familiar with the illustrator Betsy Lewin (of "Click Clack Moo" and "Duck For President" fame) but not author Elizabeth Winthrop.But one glance on the cover of a delightful pig in a spotlight and I was sold.I mean, with a title like "Dumpy La Rue" and a fun frolicsome pig, how could I resist?Out the window goes my careful selection process.Into my home comes "Dumpy La Rue".

I did not actually see the product as it was meant as a gift.From what the recipient told me, everything was fine--as described.Two books and a smallish poster.

Don't buy this set just for the poster!
I love the Olivia books, so when an opportunity such as a box set with poster became available, I jumped for joy!My set arrived today and I ripped it open to see the "limited edition poster" that was promised.What I found was an 8x11 glossy page with four small Olivia's in a variety of poses.Suitable for framing- yes. Belly Laughs for Preschoolers
Experiencing The Pig in the Pond with preschoolers is a delight. Three to Five year olds will be fully engaged by the rich illustrations and simple text--words full of meaning to young children. My preschool class waited with anxious anticipation to see what that very hot pig would do AND what would happen when Nelligan came home. The end is silly and satisfying and just what the children were waiting for. This has become a much loved favorite in our classroom.

Delightful, Great laughability!
The Pig in the Pond was an instant hit with our son.Having seen the play "Charlotte's Web", he has grown sympathetic to the plight of pigs, and since they are very smart, any book about pigs is a worthy read. Neligan's farm is turned topsy- turvey when his pig chooses to do what a pig wouln't normally do, swim instead of wallow!Wallowing isn't mentioned in the story, but the shallow pond implies that plenty of wallowing could happen if he was not in the mood to swim, if he stirs up the water enough.Instead, Neligan's entire entourage of farm animals follows Neligan as he follows his pig into the cool refreshing water- Some smart pig.The illustrations are humorous and loveable, the animals and Neligan are all portrayed with wonderful expression. Five stars for the many times I am asked to read this book.

Good Introduction!
While the story is not actually a meditation it is a great introduction for children to understand why....they should meditate. Simple text and adorable illustrations explain and show that "When you're peaceful, you can be truly fearless!" This book can definitely motivate young children to want to try and meditate. I also recommend the "Indigo Dreams Series" to move your children into meditation after being motivated by the peaceful piggies to try it. Great way to introduce a complicated concept.

Fun and valuable
This book was a useful step in introducing my two year old to pairing meditation with awareness of breath.She and I have been cultivating the ability to sit still and be aware of our breathing for a while.This book helped her to see that she can use breath awareness to calm herself in a stressful situation (hearing the vacuum cleaner, having to do something she doesn't want to do, etc.).
