5-0 out of 5 stars Entrancing for children AND adults-A great gift idea too!
Piggins is one of those rare gems: A book interesting and simple enough for very young children to enjoy (ages 3-4), with more subtlety in the text and especially in the exquisitely detailed and humorous illustrations. The adult will also enjoy the story for the beauty of the illustrations, the tongue in cheek wit, andthe delight of reading and rereading and re-examining the illustrations to catch the clues to the "who was the thief?" mystery within the story. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Mystery for Early Readers
My 4 year old daughter really enjoys the three mysteries written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Jane Dyer in the Piggins series, but "Piggins" is her most favorite.I often catch her flipping through the pages by herself in a quiet corner telling the story to herself.Dyer's illustrations are colorful and detailed. There are many things for a small child to look at.Yolen's story is as usual, a great read and keeps my daughter's attention the whole story (well, expect for when she starts asking questions!)Thank goodness the book came out in paperback, as the book is constantly in circulation at our local library. We now have all three Piggins Stories in our bookcase!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book to read aloud
This is a children's picture book written in the classic English Manor House Mystery style-- complete with a dinner party, distinguished guests, missing jewels and, of course, the butler, Piggins.I won't give away who"did it," but kids will have fun solving the mystery as you readthe book to them.Part of the fun is looking at all the details in thedrawings of the house.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enriching, Guatemalan story
Being from Guatemala, I am always looking for literature for my young child. This book has enriched our cultural heritage, not only by the story but with the illustrations.Great book for beginner reader, especially to read on Nov. 1, Dia de Todos los Santos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool for synthesis
Hard to find books that teach children synthesis, but My Pig Amarillo is one you can use.The ending is not the usual happy ending, and therefore, it will cause the class to think a bit.I was very pleased with the lesson plan I came up using this book to teach synthesis, a tough subject for the 5th grade.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Pig Amarillo
Set in Guatemala, My Pig Amarillo is a beautiful tale about a boy and his pet pig.Not only does the storyline provide an introduction to the celebration of Day of the Dead in Guatemala, but its also has a gentle and hopeful message that teaches children (and adults) a positive way to cope with loss. The lovely illustrations accurately capture the mountainous landscape of Guatemala, the colorful dress of the Mayan people, and the overall simplicity of life in this remarkable country. As a teacher and the wife of a Guatemalan, this book is one of my favorites, and I highly reccommend it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Freddys!
There is a lot of baffling clues in this story and Freddy doesn't know what to make of them.Worst of all, Mr. Bean and all of the other animals, except for Jinx the cat, believe that Freddy is a thief!Freddy must find out the truth to save his name.He is determined and proclaims that he would leave the farm and not come back until he has caught the real thief and nailed its hide to the barn!

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a cool funny book!!
This book is so cool, i recommend this book for readers who enjoy farm life and animals who lives on the farm, If I would rate this book on a 5-point scale, I would say it would be a 4..because the pictures could have been colourful instead of black and white, but overall I liked this book. Bye!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This is an excellent book by an excellent author.I've never been disappointed in one of his books and this is one of his best!I wish it could have been longer or that there were a sequel to it.The main characters are Farmer Tubbs and a lot of animals that live on his farm.I recomment this book for anyone who likes pigs, animals, or humorous stories. It's probably more of a child's book, but I think everyone would enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!!
This book is very exciting I learned about how ACE the pig can communicate with his owner. He has alot of adventures. I would reccommend thisbook to any age I think it would brighten anyone`s day to hear about a big fat pig that made me laugh. It`s abook that you can`t put down but sometimes you have to .I would give it five golden stars.ACE the pig, Nanny the lamb and Megan, are all the people that live on Ted Tubbs Farm.ACE isn`t an ordinary pig If you want to find out why, you should read this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book!
Clarence really has it all. He's a "wee" pig with a nice apartment in the city. And he is fortunate enough to take a vacation. He's excitedly boarding a bus for a ranch out west. Clarence is even excited about the bus ride.
5-0 out of 5 stars Darling book about friendship!
One of our teaching assistants came to me and begged for this title to be added to the library collection. After checking the book out online, I ordered it.To my delight, it arrived in my book order, and I immediately read it to my 2nd graders in library. We all fell in love with Clarence and Smoky. Both characters are well written and delighfully drawn. The simplistic storyline can easily be read by beginning readers. This is a must for every personal collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Special Tale ofLove and Friendship.....
Clarence, a city dwelling little pig, sets out on his first big vacation to a dude ranch, out west. After a long and interesting bus ride, he arrives and meets Smoky, a very large and friendly purple horse who introduces him to all the pleasures of western ways.Smoky takes him on long rides through the mountains and canyons, teaches Clarence to play cards with the boys, line dance, and perform on the washtub in a cowboy band. They eat, nap, and even read stories together. It's a wonderful week. But as his vacation comes to an end, Smoky tells Clarence he's getting too old to work on the ranch anymore, and is going to be sold.Best friends are hard to come by, and Clarence can't stand the thought of never seeing his favorite horse again. So he uses all his bus money to buy Smoky, and together they begin the long ride back to the city.It may take years, but as long as they're together, they have all the time in the world.....Jean Ekman Adams has written a delightful story with a gentle message about loyalty, compassion, and friendship, that won't be lost on young readers. Her simple and engaging text, with its satisfying, happily ever after ending, is beautifully enhanced by her charming, bold, and vibrant illustrations, full of endearing ranch characters, and subtle, humorous detail.Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Clarence Goes Out West And Meets A Purple Horse, is a sweet and entertaining, feel good story, that is sure to put a smile on everyone's face. This soon-to-be classic, is apicture book youngsters will beg to read again and again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My 4 year old laughs out loud every time!
This book is just silly & fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The other side of the 3 little pigs!
Not only do we see a new side of a favorite tale, we also get to meet the illustrator through his humourous actions throughout the book.If you think they pigs had problems with just the wolf, wait and see what happens when a bumbling illustrator gets involved!

4-0 out of 5 stars The 3 Little Pigs Get Silly
The Three Little Pigs story has been slightly twisted around here. Once your child has grown used to the original version, they'll love this take on the story. It starts out in the similar vein but goes off in another direction once the illustrator runs out of red paint and cannot draw the pigs pink any more. The funny twist at the end always gets us laughing. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"Some frogs are jumpy; some frogs are still./But how big is a pig? Tellme if you will!" Follow the trail of animal opposites to find out just how big apig can be. With her felt, bead, and sequin illustrations, Clare Beaton craftsan unusual and appealing picture book that teaches young readers the concept ofopposites, while drawing them ever onward to the droll conclusion. The nonsequitur juxtapositions of barnyard idiosyncrasies will not faze the lively, circular minds of children in the slightest; in fact, it's almost as if achild's logic was behind the concept and text from the start! Beaton's handiworkhas appeared in many other cleverly tactile picture books, including Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Robber barons writing children's books?
I found this book to be appallingly outdated. The Mellopsdrill for oil in the forest while the mom cheerfully "practicesout door cooking" and then all must flee when a passing motorist carelessly sets a forest fire. This book, written in 1958 when Standard Oil was king and women were third class citizens, is 1950s pulp and remains in the past--not on any child's bookshelf.Although it could serve as a good example of how far society has come in understanding and environmental awareness.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Adorable!"
This book was one of my sisters' and my favorites when we were kids about 30 years ago.Read more
