4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fast read!
When Arther Bobowicz is asked to bring home the Thanksgiving turkey,he is horrified to discover the shops are empty. But when he visits the apartment of an eccentric scientist,he finds himself bringing home a 266 pound chicken instead. He insists to his parents he should be able to keep the chicken and eventually, his begging succeeds. He has great fun teaching his chicken new tricks,(such as going down slides, playing on swingsets etc.)but his 266 pound chicken escapes.Mayhem ensues.
4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Pinkwater (chicken included)
This book from 1977 begins the saga of Henrietta, the 6-foot-tall, 266 lb. chicken, a story that continues in ~Looking for Bobowicz~ (2004) and ~The Artsy-Smartsy Club~ (2005).This is a funny story about a boy and his amiable chicken, though the part about Anthony DePalma, the shady chicken hunter, goes on too long, in my opinion. As usual, the dialogue is a highlight.Threats, misunderstandings, mad scientists and town parades -- just what you expect from Daniel Pinkwater.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hoboken Chicken Emergency
At the start of "The Hoboken Chicken Emergency", we learn that no one in the Bobowicz family likes turkey, but they eat one on Thanksgiving anyway because that's what you're supposed to do on Thanksgiving. This is our first clue that Mr. Pinkwater is on the trail of something more than a farce about colossal rampaging poultry. This is a novel of ideas, one that's intended to pry into young minds and make them question their assumptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars the last Guru rocks!
This is an amazing, funny, incredibly random book with five comical masterpeices. Though I agree with the other reveiwers that alan medelsohn, boy from Mars is very good, my personel favorite is the last Guru. the idea of a self-made kid millionare is VERY intertaning. These books are, as I said earlier, random, and A Young Adult Novel is possibly the most random of them all. an example; the Dada's(the main character) beleive dishwashers should rule the world. Weird, isn't it? Any way, no matter wich story you read first, you'll laugh and have a great time reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read. Again, again, again, and again.
The five novels in this book are genius. Alan Mendelson, boy from mars, takes youn through a boy going through being the new kid, goofing off with another weirdo, the wacky Klugarsh Mind Control, and... well I just can't give away the rest! I have to say i have a soft spot for The Last Guru, its so just... cool what happens to the boy :). This is an EXELLENT book for anyone to buy, I've read it so many times i tore off both covers and three pages. A great book to love and read again, again, again, and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars -[beyond a title]-
I cannot think of one word, or two, or three or even more to describe this book. I am not even going to try. The only problem I have is not with the book itself, but with some of the reviews.. Everyone looks upon Alan Mendelson, Boy from Mars as Pinkwater's masterpiece when the true gem (in my opinion) is in the back of the book! Yes folks.. Young Adult Novel by Daniel Pinkwater is quite possibly my favourite book. Ever. It is insanely random (Horace Gerstenblut n'existe pas!!!) (also, Kevin Shapiro is the, well, I won't ruin that card for you, partially 'cause I can't remember..). But anyway, all the contained novels are pure comic genius, funny to all (I loved them when I was eleven or so, but they seem almost better to people in high school; my aunt loves Pinkwater and I read Young Adult Novel to my mum and she seemed to enjoy it), so I suggest you read this book IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A very silly outer space invasion
I've been a reader of Daniel Pinkwater's books since grade school, and even enjoy reading them today. Along with `The Magic Moscow', this particular tale is one of the most memorable for me. Like just about all of the author's kiddie tomes, `Fat Men From Space' has no shortage of strange & bizarre yet lighthearted and gently humorous characters & situations. 3-0 out of 5 stars Hide the donuts!!The Fat Men from Space are coming!!
When William went to the dentist for a filling, he had no idea that it would be able to pick up radio broadcasts!!Wow!A radio tooth! You can imagine the fun tricks William could play on his family, friends and teacher with a radio in his tooth (sorry, you’ll have to read the book to find out what those tricks ARE!)5-0 out of 5 stars HUNGRY,HUGRY,....ALIEN!!!!
This book is great. I loved it. It's about a boy who gets a radio in his teeth and he recives radio tranmisions from space!!!! Read this book to find out what happends to the boy. I recomend this book to anyone who likes children books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2The Bad Boy Bears of Bayonne, New Jersey
This new Pinkwater book is the equivalent of a shaggy dog story with bears--two "bad bears."Previously, Daniel and Jill Pinkwater team depicted Irving and Mutluk's forced departure from the Arctic (where they failed repeatedly to steal muffins) to the Bayonne, New Jersey zoo. That story ends more happily than it first appears, as the bears discover a muffin factory next to their new home! (Their larcenous adventures at the Bayonne muffin factory are recounted in "Bad Bears in the Big City : An Irving & Muktuk Story.")
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Illustrations
No match for an aggravated bunny,Irving and Muktuk, bad and cowardly polar bears, are forced to be good...temporarily. This peculiar story also features a quite good polar bear who lives in an apartment and commutes to the zoo. That really seems odd at first reading, but probably no more so than "Put Me in the Zoo" by Robert Lopshire, a customer pleasing book.Ink and marker illustrations illuminate this title which should provide storytime laughter.A good purchase for public and school libraries as well as for Pinkwater fans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars full of humor and philisophy even kids can grasp
my kids loved the book 20 years ago and it still made them smile when I bought it for them on there way to adulthood .
5-0 out of 5 stars Oldie, but Goodie
This book has been around for most of my teaching career, but it is still applicable today.I love to use it at the beginning of the year when we explore the theme of Under Construction: Building an Understanding of Our World. The message that it is not only okay to be different, but appreciated in our multiage class comes across strong. We make paper construction houses of our own dreams and place them along "Neat Street."I also do a lesson on idioms, since the neighbors use so many to describe Mr. Plumbean.

5-0 out of 5 stars you gotta get this book
I have been a teacher and librarian and have read this book to probably several thousand children. It is the very best book to read aloud. It gets gasps, smiles and laughs from every group. Best of all, I never get tired of reading it. I gave it to an art teacher who used it for a project. Ask students to draw a picture of their Plumbean house and to write an explanation of it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Blue Moose... Pinkwater's creation 3 novels in one book...moose-sense...I am a Book Loons Reviewer and Book Hugger...
You've never seen a blue moose?Well, you are about to meet a handsome, shade of Blue Moose in author Daniel Pinkwater's 'Once Upon A Blue Moose'. Blue Moose is the headwaiter at Mr. Breton's restaurant, which is set by the edge of a northern forest. People came from all over the territories to meet Blue Moose, and savor Mr. Breton's delicious cooking. Customers are charmed with Moose's service, and suggestions of menu specialties, and among them are game warden Mr. Bobowich, and hermit David. Blue Moose makes an exemplary partner for 'Chef'(the moniker which moose gave Mr. Breton.)
5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
Here is the Blue Moose trilogy, back in print and all in one volume. This format is smaller than the old books were, but the illustrations still look really great. There are a few sections of moose facts [with a humorous slant], and there's even a letter from the moose himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely funny
A very appealing book, and a favorite from Pinkwater. Good for both boys and girls, especially those looking for something funny and original.

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduce Your Young Reader To The Wonders Of Drug-Free Tripping!
Manus Pinkwater is a pretty cool kinda guy. He has the unique feature of being as tall sitting as he is standing, and that makes me wonder if the convex dimensions of an author's backside are somehow related to the quantity of his imagination. You see, Manus writes far-out books. No, no, I mean...realllly far-out books. I think hepasses the Twilight Zone somewhere in route to where he goes to pen his creative little novels. Lizard Music may take the cake among everything straaaaange he's written, however. This story puts your brain in a food processor and hits frappe. What's it about? Oh, you want to know that, don't you? Okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended pick for ages 6-8.
Irving and Muktuk have been accused of the baked goods crime of the century - but the bears are innocent, and set out to clear their bad reputations. This is the fourth book in the Irving and Muktuk series, but the first we've seen: it's a lovely detective story spiced with Jill Pinkwater's fine drawings and is a recommended pick for ages 6-8.

Looking for Bobowicz is another great Daniel Pinkwater book, the first sequel to the Hoboken Chicken Emergency (another 5 star book). After their Classic Comics books are stolen by a Phantom, three kids take on the challenge of hunting down the Phantom -- and discover that all the adults in town go mum whenever they ask about it.Along the way, they meet a crazy librarian, Meehan the bum, and a pirate radio DJ named Vic Trola...(And learn about great literature!) 5-0 out of 5 stars The Birth of the Cold
The former "Bongo Larry" returns as"Ice Cream Larry" in this delightful continuation of the Pinkwaters' series about the multi-talented polar bear.Jill Pinkwater's vivid, varied colors (pen and ink, and colored marker) and Daniel Pinkwater's droll prose combine for another hit. Here, Larry gets in trouble after eating 250 pounds of ice cream from the walk-in freezer at Cohen's Cones. Larry is full of excuses, including a claim that he ate the ice cream in his sleep! After hearing of his exploits ("Bear eats 1/8 Ton Ice Cream"), Mr. I. Berg comes to the Hotel Larry with a proposition to enhance the reputation of the Iceberg Ice-Cream Company: A new line of Larry ice cream bars, including codfish flavor.Somehow it all goes well, even with the company's dubious new slogan--a quote from Larry--"I do not feel sick!"5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite picture book
I am a kindergarten teacher, and while my students enjoy this book, I don't think they like it more than I do.I read this book to my husband and teen-aged sons, and have read it for my own pleasure many times. I think this book could be well used in a high school English class when discussing tone or comic timing.I only wish that the Larry books would come out in paperback so that more people could enjoy them, and that another old Pinkwater favorite, Roger's Umbrella, were still in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Larry is Cool, Not a Fool
Ice Cream Larry is one of a series of books about Larry, a polar bear, who lives at a hotel and works as a lifeguard at the hotel pool. Larry has never eaten a human being, but he is always hungry, and in this book he eats 250 pounds of ice cream and wants more. His greed leads him to fame as the spokesbear of the Iceberg Ice Cream company and a new product is named after him. The Larry Bar comes in many flavors including blueberry and codfish. The Larry books are hilarious, and the illustrations colorful and engaging. I have read this book many, many times to my 3-year old, who never gets tired of Larry's antics with his brother Roy and his friends at the hotel, the Frobishers... The phrase "And I don't feel sick!" has become one of our standard jokes when we eat ice cream (or anything else we like a lot!) ... Read more

There is only one way to keep from turning into a werewolf, and that iswith the help of a magic pretzel. This seems simple enough--unless the onlymagic pretzel on earth happens to be kept by your half brother Lance Von Sweenyin a special, burglar-proof case in the Museum of the Pretzel on Nemo Boulevard. This is the predicament of Mr. Talbot, beloved (yet weird and scary) teacher,half-man, half-wolf, and sponsor of the Watson Elementary School WerewolfClub.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First in a fun and furry series
This book features Normal Gnormal, a 4th-grader raised as a dog. When his parents become concerned about his behavior at school (growling and storing meat in his desk), Norman's principal signs him up for the school's werewolf club along with Ralf Alfa, Billy Furball, and Lucy Fang. The club is sponsored by "weird and scary" teacher, Mr. Talbot, who always wears a long coat, gloves, hat, scarf, and sunglasses. The children discover that Mr. Talbot is, in fact, a werewolf stuck in wolf form as a result of a curse placed on him by his half brother, Lance Von Sweeny. The curse can only be lifted by the titular magic pretzel, in Lance's possession.Obtaining the pretzel and returning Mr. Talbot to human form the book's main adventure. This is the first book in a series, which picks up from Pinkwater's 1985 book, I Was a Second-Grade Werewolf, slyly mentioned as Ralf's favorite book.Presented in 78 pages and 38 brief chapters, the story begins by providing a bit of background in "Chapter Minus Three" through "Chapter Zero" as a kind of countdown before launching into the main story. The tone is playful, current (the first chapter's "Frequently Asked Werewolf Questions" recall FAQ's on the World Wide Web), and hip without seeming to pander to childrens' tastes. The story is easy to follow with many comically nonsensical tidbits, including the parsnip car driven by Lance and the Museum of the Pretzel. The book's simple cartoonish black and white illustrations bring faces to the characters and, in the case of the children, present vital statistics such as height, weight, and type of wolf on ID cards.Although the characters and events are outlandish and comical, the story presents aspects of school and family life that will be familiar and poignant to children.Newly independent readers will enjoy the fast-paced and funny style of this chapter book; avid readers will also enjoy beginning an entertaining series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for both werewolves and humans
Daniel Pinkwater's "The Werewolf Club #1: The Magic Pretzel" is a fun book for young readers. The story is an entertaining blend of fantasy and humor, and is well enhanced by Jill Pinkwater's cartoony illustrations.5-0 out of 5 stars How Do You Cure a Werewolf?
Fourth grader, Norman Gnormal has been raised as a dog...it's what his parents really wanted when they had him and his earliest memories are of playing fetch with his father. Now the principal of the Watson Elementary School has signed him up for the Werewolf Club, since there aren't any other activities for boys who think that they're dogs.At the first meeting, scary and weird Mr Talbot, a werewolf himself and the club's sponsor, sets the group's first mission in motion. They are going to cure themselves of this evil curse by stealing the "Magic Pretzel", kept in a burglar proof case in the Museum of Pretzel. One bite, under the full moon and the curse will be lifted!Daniel Pinkwater haswritten a fast paced, funny, absurd and delightful short chapter book, that is just perfect for kids aged 7-10.With action packed scenes and hip kid-speak language, your youngsters will be turning pages to the very end as Norman, the only non-werewolf of the club, uses his canine skills to find and capture the prized pretzel. This is the beginning of a terrific series and a sure way to help your kids enjoy reading. ... Editorial Review

Poor Stanley. He's a perfectly normal boy until one morning he wakes up flat. After his parents peel the incriminating bulletin board off of him, Stanley must adjust to life as a pancake. He is a boy who takes this kind of thing in stride, though, and soon he's enjoying the advantages of squashedness.Sliding under closed doors is fun, and it's gratifying to be of use to his mother when she drops her ring through a narrow metal grating. Expensive plane fare to California? No problem. Svelte Stanley folds comfortably into a brown paper envelope. There's even room left over in there for an egg-salad sandwich. But Stanley's true moment of glory comes when a gang of thieves begins stealing paintings from the Famous Museum of Art. The case seems hopeless--until our two-dimensional hero saves the day. Here is one boy who doesn't let his profile-challenged body stop him from living life fully--that is, until his brother finds a way to help him become well rounded again. Jeff Brown's matter-of-fact tone and Tomi Ungerer's witty and engaging drawings tickle the funny bone, making this 1964 classic a perennial favorite. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well-Rounded Adventure
Stanley has been squashed flat by his bulletin board! Now that's he's only a half-inch thick, he can slide under doors, get mailed in extra large envelopes, and be flown like a kite. When The Famous Museum of Art needs a special favor, Stanley is ready to help.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I read this with my [...] sister and she loved it! It's a little too hard for her age because there are some vocabulary she didn't even understand but I helped her and she got along with the book very well. Very funny and humorous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Fun
A truly original premise requiring more than the usual suspension of disbelief, Flat Stanley delivers a light-hearted journey through the life of Stanley Lambchop.Stanley, a typical American boy, finds his life suddenly transformed when he is flattened by a bulletin board. His parents, in language and wit, sound like a television show family from the 50's, but with the off-beat humor and implausible story-line, it somehow all works wonderfully.Jeff Brown has created an interesting dynamic in describing the relationship between Stanley and his older brother, Arthur, who is intermittently inconsiderate and jealous of Stanley's new-found celebrity.Ultimately, however, it is Arthur who saves the day and returns Stanley to his proper size.It is a very engaging, upbeat story that is a fun read for the toddler set.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Band of Bearthren
Daniel and Jill Pinkwater have another winner in this book from the enormously funny"Larry" series.Larry is a huge but friendly polar bear who lives in a hotel and hangs out in the icy cold pool. This is a jokey-book, but even when the humor is predictable, the Pinkwaters' dry as ice delivery is irresistible: "NOTICE TO GUESTS: MAKE SURE THE BEAR LIKES YOU BEFORE USING THE POOL."5-0 out of 5 stars pinkwater, hilarious as always
At the Hotel Larry is just hilarious.Larry is a polar bear who has drifted from the polar regions to New Jersey.Pinkwater's trademark humor is in full effect.A great picture book for ages 3-103 !

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and great to read aloud
The narrator of this story is a girl who lives in a hotel with her father and mother. Larry, a polar bear, once saved her father's life, and as a reward, Larry wanted to live in a hotel with a swimming pool. So her father bought an old hotel, and Larry is the lifeguard. Every now and again, the girl disguises Larry in a very large coat, hat, and sunglasses, and they go to the Pancake Palace to eat blueberry pancakes. One day they go to the zoo, and I won't spoil the story by telling any more! The humor is wacky and sophisticated but will appeal to all ages. The style is simple and the book is fun to read because Larry is so clever and droll. I have read this book aloud countless of times to my 3-year-old. Larry has really captured the imagination of my son. Highly recommended for its humor and great illustrations. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Whether you know Daniel Pinkwater as a children's book author (and youshould, he's written over 40 fabulous books) or as a National Public Radiocommentator, you must agree that he is a very, very funny guy. Though his booksare perfectly nonsensical and absurd in all the best ways, they leave youfeeling strangely serene about the universe. Whether his books introduce us tomuffin-eating polar bears (Larry), really old time-traveling men (Uncle Borgel),or 266-pound chickens (Henrietta from Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars borgel
Borgel is one of my favorite books of pinkwaters. It's imagination in book form. you never know whats going to happen next. amazing and fun is my review for the book borgel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who needs Prozac?
If only all teens could read this book...there would be a whole lot less depressed teens in the world today! Like most teens, I have gone through depressing times in my life, but since I got this book, I certainly have had less of them! Just read "Borgel" and meet the great-great-great-great-grandfather you wish you had. Or open up to "The Snarkout Boys and the Baconburg Horror" and go to pieces as you read the escapade of the Snarkout Boys (one of whom is a girl) all through Baconburg and Hamfast. If you prefer 'classic literatur,' then read "Yobgorgle," a wonderful mix of the Loch Ness Monster and "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" and the legend of the Flying Dutchman. Seriously (not really, it is impossible to be serious where Pinkwater is concerned), this book can bring you out of depression in an instant. (Try some chocolate, too.) And as Stephanie said in her review, IGNORE THE AGE LIMIT! YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD FOR PINKWATER!

3-0 out of 5 stars hate to rain on the parade, but
OK, first off I consider myself to have a decent (even above average) sense of humor. I'm always biting my lip to stifle giggles because my companions wouldn't get the joke. I love Lemony Snicket. I worship at the altar of Dave Barry. But, unlike a lot of readers here, I'm only mildly amused at most of Pinkwater's stuff. I enjoyed the "Borgel" story, but I was crushed at how lame [sorry] the "Snarkout Boys" sequel was. I loved the first, thought it was great. But I think it was the constantly switching viewpoint that sank the sequel. It also read like a first draft, particularly the werewolf monologues. That's what bugs me, how much better a lot of the stories could have been. Please, make them just a bit more accessible to new readers; sometimes the wackiness really goes into overload and it's too much to stay with the story. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Daniel Pinkwater ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is possibly, most certainly, probably, the most funniest book I have ever read. The only ones that come close to this incredible feat of genuis are other books written by Mr. Pinkwater. Now on to the pros and cons;
4-0 out of 5 stars Another fun romp with the young werewolves
"The Werewolf Club #2: The Lunchroom of Doom," is a fun entry in this young adult series by Daniel Pinkwater. The book is illustrated by Jill Pinkwater. The story is narrated by Norman Gnormal, a member of the Watson Elementary School Werewolf Club -- a sort of peer support group for kids who are werewolves.5-0 out of 5 stars The Werewolf Club is Back!
Poor Billy Furball, he's been thrown out of the school lunchroom for having a food fight with himself. It was so bad, they had to bring in special cleaning equipment. And on top of that, because of his behavior, Billy has to see the school psychiatrist, who has informed him that there is no such thing as werewolves...it's just a game that got out of hand. Now, to support and cheer up their fellow werewolf, the rest of the club has decided not to eat in the lunchroom either.First, they tried to eat outside, but it rained.Next they tried to each in their club sponsor's car, but it was too full of shedded werewolf hair. So, finally they went down the block to eat at Honest Tom's Tibetan-American Lunchroom. The food wasn't bad and they got to meet Captain Sterling of the North American Space Squad. He has been abducted by aliens more than 400 times. Now as the club lunches each day at Honest Tom's, strange things begin to happen...This is the second book in Daniel Pinkwater's Werewolf series, and just like the first, it is full of wacky characters and laugh out loud scenes. The easy to read short chapters and hip, kid-speak language will keep your youngsters hooked and turning pages to the very end. This is a silly, funny, very absurd story that is just perfect for 7-10 year olds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME PUPPY BOOK
This is the best dog book I ever read. If you are thinking of getting a puppy, get this book! It's not hard to read and by the time you are done, you will feel like the best dog expert on the block. Some people might get scared at the size but I gurantee those books that tell you that their supposed to be a junior pet care book only tell you that you should be good owner. This book has a great descripition for how you should take care of a dog. It even includes information about advanced training. BUY THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best puppy book written!
Before you get a dog, buy this book! From a terrific "Puppy Scoring" test to help select the right pup for you out of a litter, to practical tips on teething and house training, this book is the best. Used it extensively to raise what became The Best Dog in the World -- their tips helped her be house trained within 2 weeks of coming home (never another accident!). I have given 15 copies of this book as gifts when friends have said they were thinking about getting a dog. If you buy a dog book, buy this one!
