I am in second grade and I choose this book for a book report.I really enjoyed this book because I like pirate's story. The story is about a little boy with a big heart living on a good pirate ship with his family. In the story he wants to help raise money for his granny who lives in aRetirement home for old pirates.The tresures he finds to help her arestolen and he goes after the thiefs to get them back.Happy ending. ... Pirates, as author Richard Platt quickly makes clear, were an unsavory lot to say the least.Wonderful full-color illustrations of these grizzly fellows also leave no doubt that they were men to be avoided at all costs.That was not as easy as it sounds because early mariners on the Mediterranean (some 5,000 years ago) had no defense when overtaken by a merciless crew who stole what they had and often sold the seamen for slaves.Read more

Not appropriate for children under 15 years of age
This book is a humorous, fact-filled summary of knights, spies, and pirates. It includes cartoon illustrations of many of the facts and anecdotes described in the text. Many of the same facts and anecdotes, however, describe gory or grisly events (as an example, see the description of warfare and sieges during the Crusades) which makes it wholly inappropriate for junior teens. Older teens and adults should find it fun reading, as long as they're not too squeamish!

Great for Children of all ages
A wonderful book written with a Jr. High aged kid in mind.However, it is still a delight to read as an adult (I think I had more fun than a teenager would)It is written with a wit and humor that anyone can enjoy.This book gives historical information in a fun, "forget I'm learning" sort of way.I reccomend it for anyone and everyone. ...
