5-0 out of 5 stars Froggy
I never felt bored while reading this book, I felt like I could relate to almost every poem that was going on. Every statement I interpreted it a different way but it all related somehow.I thought the author did a really good job at this poem, and the lay out of it.
5-0 out of 5 stars The poems are great!
I'm 16 yrs. old and I absolutely love this book of poems. There isn't really a subject that a teenager would bring up or think about that isn't in Paint Me Like I Am. It even gives you activities you can do with poetry. I would give this book to anyone, it to me is even a book that most adults would even enjoy I know for a fact that my mom loves it!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Hit or Miss
To be honest, I felt rather bored while reading, "Paint Me Like I Am." Being thirteen, I was quickly compelled to assume from the start that I was going to immediately relate to every poem, and every word written. From reading the description, I had been familiarized with the book as, "True, honest, and real teens with real issues." The only issues I found were temporary broken hearts from relationships. A lot of the material was repetitive, I found many lines copied from famous movies, or books. These poems many unfortunate grammar turn-ups, which made the compesition some what confusing and un-flattering. Juvenile would be an understatement, as most of these young inexperienced, first time poets talked of how terrible their lives were, and how the boy they liked would never like them.

4-0 out of 5 stars great-except for first entry...
"Time somebody told me" has been around a lot longer than the young man who submitted it - Otherwise, love the real, true feelings expressed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tender? Deep? Try Tolerance Run Amok
(...) YOU HEAR ME: POEMS AND WRITINGS BY TEENAGE BOYS is a collection of teenage angst that will shock most any parent who reads this book. That may come as a surprise to those on the left who promote the acceptance of trash as "tolerance"... but "shocked" is probably being kind as many parents would be flat-out angry at finding their 7th-12th grader in possession of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry for the Teenage Boy!
This poetry book edited by Betsey Franco is an excellent book. The poetry is written by teenage boys. The writing is freeverse. The boys tell their emotions which consists of sad, happy, and hurt feelings. They write about things that are important to them like , how they were abused mentally and phisically, how they didn't have girlfriends, and about secrets they never told any one. Over all it was a five star book.I liked this book because I could relate to it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeking one's Fortune
There are as many ways of honoring the long forgotten as there are ways of mucking that honor up.I came to "Fortune's Bones" with just a bit of trepidation, I admit.Though I knew author Marilyn Nelson had created this book to honor a man long dead in the best way she knew how, I was still recovering from a similar, and foul, title called, "Journey To the Bottomless Pit" which also came out in 2004.In both books, a man who was a slave during his lifetime is honored with a children's book of fiction. In "Journey", the book was a simplistic version of a complicated man's life.I prayed that "Fortune's Bones" would not be the same. Those prayers were answered tenfold.Marilyn Nelson tells the story of Fortune in a manner respectful of his life, then accompanies this retelling with a requiem written in his honor.Though I would have enjoyed further factual information on the topic, this is a worthy addition to any poetry collection or non-fiction collection, for children, teens, or grown adults, anywhere.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fortune's remains the Mattatuck Museum
Fortune's skeleton is not on display. The exhibit about Fortune at the Mattatuck Museum includes a photographic illusion allowing visitors to see an image of Fortune's skeleton transform into a painting of Fortune as he may have looked in life. Fortune's actual bones have been carefully placed in archival museum storage, awaiting a community decision about whether to bury the remains or preserve them for future study. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Mother Goose book I had as a child
I was so thrilled to find this version of Mother Goose still in print.I had this book as a child, and I can close my eyes and still see the gorgeous illustrations.I am 33 years old now, and expecting my first baby, and when I saw this book on Amazon.com ... I had to buy it immediately. My copy is dog-eared and covered in crayon and the binding is shot. Not only is owning this book again nostalgic for me, but I look forward to reading it to my baby as my parents read it to me.It's not watered down Mother Goose. These rhymes reflect a different era and there is a bit of violence in a few of them. But I read them from a very young age without incident and I plan on letting my child enjoy this book as I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love the English language, buy it.
This is the definitive collection of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. If you love words and language, this is for you. This book has all the old favorites and many that you've never heard.Compare them with the modern versions of the same rhymes and you'll see how society has changed--as well as our attitudes about children.5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
My daughters are 17 and 14 years old.I startedreading from this book when they were one and younger. We all loved the beautiful illustrations.Unfortunately our book is well worn.I have been looking for this bookthat I might give each of my daughters a copy when they have children.Ialso would like to give this book as a baby gift. This is my favoriteMother Goose book.I have not found any other that even compares. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't stop giving them away for gifts!
I am an adult but love this Halloween book.It is written for children but I enjoy it and have given a copy of ths book to numerous friends (who have grandchildren) as well as to some of my favorite children. It has interested me that boys who are not readers by nature, seem to enjoy this book very much. Girls also adore the book but always seem easier to interest in reading than boys. Have a look!Don't pass up this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Halloween book for Preschool through Grade 2
Of all the halloween books we checked out of the library last year (and that was a LOT), this one was my 5-year-old's favorite, and mine, too!It has all of the Halloween necessities -- skeletons, witches, pumpkins, etc. -- but wasn't too scary for a young child. The poems are delightful, and the book is a great way to introduce young children to various forms of poetry, both rhythmic and more free-form.The book includes a wide variety of poems, but thankfully, it's still just the right length for a bedtime read.Lastly, the pictures really make this book stand out from all the rest -- the beading work is amazing. This book will delight children and adults alike!

2-0 out of 5 stars Loses that poetic rhythm
I was hoping this would be a good coffee table book to have out during the Halloween season when hosting adult parties.Alas, it was not meant for the over 10 years of age set.Of the twenty poems presented in the book and the one on the back cover, only five held any interest for me.The others failed to have a poetic rhythm that I could follow.I do believe that children between 3 and 10 would enjoy the poems more than any adult I know as they describe the Halloween experience very well. They just don't work as poetic structure for me.Most of the poems begin with a good cadence but lose that rhythm toward the middle to the end of the poem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you have a piano and can read music...
A great book with lyrics in Spanish and English and wonderful illustrations. However, a CD to go along with the book would be much better than the sheet music included....

5-0 out of 5 stars Diez Deditos
The author, Jose Luis Orozco, is a bilingual educator/singer who keeps English-speaking and Spanish-speaking children interested throughout his books and accompanying music. As a substitute teacher, I have used his books and tapes extensively in elementary school classes over the years. I have had the privilege of attending his concerts at elementary schools several times and have thoroughly enjoyed his work.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Spanish starter
I bought this book & the accompanying CD. To be honest, I don't use the book to sing along with the CD as much as I thought I would. But...when I do, it is great. There are wonderful, colorful pictures, English & Spanish words to every song, and an explanation of the origin/tradition of the song. Lots of fun, I hope my 15 month old is absorbing some of it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Truth in Historical Fiction is Imperative!
All those who are applauding Jeffers for her misguided protrayal ofChief Si'ahl's words should rethink what you are proclaiming. I would be enraged -- as you would -- if I were blatantly misquoted. Perhaps you should be sensitve enough to check out how Native Americans feel about this book on www.oyate.org -- or -- clear your facts by reading the website posted by his own people www.duwamishtribe.org. We are doing our children an injustice by continuing to pass on misconceptions as history. I would perfer to give this a 0 star rating but since that was not an option -- I guess the pictures are attractive -- even though the drawing of Chief Si'ahl are actually an exact copy of the Cheyenne Two Moons -- try googling it and you'll see.Oh -- did you notice that the ghoston the lastpage is carrying a empty cradleboard?I find that appalling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Message, Bad Credit
Being a "liberal, God-hater" (credited by W. Doolittle, a man who beleives that the Earth is 6,000 years old) I was automatically drawn to Native American cultures because their anti-American like me. I mean, seriously, they don't have Christmas trees! They're totally going to Hell. Anyways, it's an excellent message to preserve the enviroment, which I'd out to work on preserving SOMETHING while I'm here on Earth becuase my soul is destined to eternal damnation for, you know, having a brain in my head. But yeah, we all know that Chief Seattle didn't write this. Thanks, Jesus!

1-0 out of 5 stars Another vote for "not accurate"
Text aside, Susan Jeffer's book on Chief Seattle has inaccurate illustrations of historic Northwest Coast tribal costume, dwellings and landscape.I also use this book with my third graders every year - but only to show the kids how some authors have not done adequate research before publishing. There are other great children's books on the subject from lesser known authors and smaller publishers. It may be worth your while to look them up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Seuss's ABC
Dr Seuss's rhymes and periodic nonsense words will help young readers learn the alphabet and make it fun! Each letter of the alphabet, except X (which is used in the middle and at the end of words), are used at the beginning of words, making fun tongue-twisters that will always make kids giggle during the reading of this book. And what's better than fun learning?!?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
....but, of course, it is Dr. Suess. My two year old demands this book nearly every day and quotes from it liberally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Suess was a genius!
My son is 27 months old with a severe speech delay and without any true words.I don't know what it is about this book but he loves it and is so verbal when we read it.It is his favorite out of many books. We read it twice almost every night. He screams with glee at the mere sight of it.He actually sounds out the letters as we turn to each new page.He points to the bubbles, doughnuts and neckties for counting even though he cannot count yet but likes when I do. He does "nice" on my hair when we get to the "mighty nice mice".He quacks like a duck for the Quaking Quacker-oo.He "roars" when he sees the Red Rhinoceros and Yellow Yak.Each page is excitement to him even though we have read it countless times. He also has the board book (which is slightly different) and I let him play with that one so as not to ruin this one.I highly recommend this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The King, Dr Seuss and Me
This is more of a personal note than a review, but it serves to show how a children's book can resonate through an entire lifetime.
5-0 out of 5 stars All work and no stilts put King Birtram's kingdom in danger
Theodore Seuss Geisel, using his famous pen name of Dr. Seuss, wrote and illustrated his first children's book, "And to Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street," in 1937. Two years later he wrote "The King's Stilts." Even at this early point in his career Dr. Seuss was able to emphasize the idea that reading could be fun without have to be moralistic and that it was important that the illustrations actually had a close relationship with the text of the story. Geisel once declared: "I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities." Certainly "The King's Stilts" evidences that point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! Iza Trapani Books are wonderful!
I too HIGHLY recommend Iza Trapani's "I'm a Little Teapot" and "The Itsy Bitsy Spider"! This book is so beautifully illustrated, and brings the classic song to life. This was a great bedtime book and now my kids are starting to read it themselves! Timeless!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Great book. Reinforced the song by brining in a new aspect of it to my daughter. She started singing the song before she saw the book so it was nice to share this with her. Now she wants me to read it to her almost every night.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hit
Wow!My daughter really loves this book.Ever since I brought it home from the library she has wanted us to read it to her every day, several times a day.I think it appeals to her because the verses are so gentle. She seems to like the illustrations also.Sometimes I sing it to her, and sometimes I just say it.Either way, she can't get enough. For the first time, she actually cried and pitched a fit when I was through with reading a book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection of Poetry for Children
This collection of poetry, especially designed for those putting together a curriculum for children, does all the work of finding important, interesting and beautiful works for children to study or memorize from the simplest verses for young tots "The world is so full of a number of things, I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings" to more complex works for high school (such as "Ode to a Grecian Urn" by John Keats) that include study questions and an answer key. This is a true treasure especially for homeschool parents and teachers - it's so comprehensive and easy to use.5-0 out of 5 stars Twaddle-free Copywork
This is *the* all-in-one resource for your classical copywork, dictation, and memory work needs. Laura Berquist has done all the legwork for busy homeschooling parents, bringing together a lovely selection of poetry and organizing it according to the stages of the trivium. Selections for the rhetorical stage include study questions, so the book could double as a literature text in the upper grades. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all colorful or fun to read for parents or students
We have this book - in fact, we have had it for six years and have never used it.I have tried, but it is too boring to use.Poetry should be colorful and beautiful. Not page after page of poetic text to read.I suggest getting some classic poetry books - full of color and pictures - and reading the beautiful words to your children. This book is one to skip. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a kick
Every year Poetry Month comes along and every year there are children's librarians like myself who shudder at its approach.Poetry.It's not something that every person in the world is going to appreciate right off the bat.So, if you're like myself, you get out a bunch of poetry books, put them in an area labeled "POETRY MONTH SELECTIONS" and then desperately search the internet for further poetry-related activities you can hold in your branch. This year I decided I'd try to do some poetry with the homeschooler bookgroup I run. What I really wanted was to show the kids lots of books with different kinds of poetic styles in them.A collection of poetic forms, if you will.I couldn't find anything perfect, however, so I just chalked it up to there being too few useful poetry books for kids in this world. Then I attended the Children's Book Committee annual breakfast at the Bank Street College of Education. And the winner of the 2005 Claudia Lewis Award, as it happened, was "A Kick In the Head", as selected by Paul B. Janeczko.I was curious so I picked it up.And right then and there it hit me that THIS was the book I'd been so desperately searching for all this time. It's a truly interesting collection of poetic forms done in such a way that kids will not only understand them, but want to write some of their own. After I recovered from the shock I returned to my library and sure enough, lo and behold, there was the book sitting perkily on my shelf where it had always been.So parents, educators, and librarians, heed my warning.Discover "A Kick In the Head" for your own Poetry Months before it's too late.Don't make the same mistake I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for teaching poetry
This book is a wonderful tool if you are teaching poetry. It describes many different types of poetry with an example and a simple explanation.Very colorful pictures.

Paul Janeczko compiled this "Everyday Guide to Poetic Forms" with wonderful "asides" and editorial descriptions. It is definitely not "everyday-ish"/or/for children only. The book is an absolute delight - and an eye-opener. OR, perhaps I should say *ear-opener* because all the sounds ofthese examples make music/or/nonsense/or/possibly dissonance. If you are, or have ever been an editor, read the epitaph on p.40!

5-0 out of 5 stars A frequently overlooked Seuss gem !
This was my favorite book as a kid & still is.I now have ownership of our family's 'ancient' copy (copyright date 1955, Mom's written inscription: Christmas 1962 for my oldest brother who was age 6).I recently read it to my 6 year old son and he also was taken with this book. I am getting a new copy for him for Christmas as the original is pretty fragile now. This book belongs in every family's collection along with The Lorax, The Sneeches, Bartholomew Cubbins, Horton and the rest of the classic/original Seuss stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome...its the Dr.
Actually got this for my new tat, but I love this art

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom read it to me, will read it to my nephew
I was in college before I was informed that Dr. Seuss books had "messages".I then thought about it, and decided that my professor was partially right and that this is one of the books with a "message".It teaches you not to stop at the obvious but to see if there is more to life.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelously Imaginative
Medieval Dutch painter Hieronymous Bosch often included strange creatures in his paintings.Of course, as a busy artist, he would have employed a housekeeper, and she might have been a trifle disturbed by the many bizarre creations inhabiting the household. This is the premise behind Willard's poem. The housekeeper, exasperated by having to deal with "three-legged thistles" sleeping in her wash, an oven which turns itself into a rake, and dragons which block the sink, packs her bags and leaves. She doesn't realize until much later, however, that several of the strange creatures have stowed away in her baggage. They beg her to return and Bosch is so happy to see her again that he promises to reinvent his creatures to be more helpful to her. They marry and (presumably) live happily (but weirdly) ever after.
5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious illustrations matched by singing language
This has got to be one of my favorite children's books.I don't know which is more impressive--the extravagant Bosch-inspired illustrations, or the witty verse with its precise rhymes and impeccable rhythm. At first it appears to be a too-precious book appreciated only by adults, but in fact children seem to love it too.My 3-year-old son, entranced by the jumping, singing langauge, loves it.He particularly enjoys all the talk ofcreepy crawlies and moster-animal hybrids.("Which one is the pickle-winged bat, Mama?")5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing Hieronymus Bosch.....
"Once upon a time there was an artist named Hieronymus Bosch who loved odd creatures. Not a day passed that the good woman who looked after his house didn't find a new creature lurking in a corner or sleeping in a cupboard..."So begins Nancy Willard's inventive picture book about this mysterious Dutch painter who filled his canvasses with fantastic and intriguing beings of all shapes and sizes. This poor housekeeper couldn't take it anymore."I'm quitting your service, I've had quite enough/of your three-legged thistles asleep in my wash,/of scrubbing the millstone you use for a dish,/and riding to shops on a pickle-winged fish."She packs her bags and leaves, but once out on her own, finds she misses all the chaos her employer's imagination brings to life, and comes flying back home on that pickle-winged fish to a happily-ever-after ending.....Ms Willard's clever, rhyming text has a medieval look and feel, and a lyrical cadence that begs to be read aloud. But it's Diane and Leo Dillons' amazing and evocative artwork that really makes this book stand out and sparkle.Youngsters will enjoy poring over and exploring the bold and engaging pictures of two headed dragons, dancing cucumbers, monkeys, and lizards, and beehives in boots... and are sure to find something new and exciting each and every time they open the book.Perfect for kids 5 and older, Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch is a creative and entertaining introduction and includes a short biography at the end to complete the story. This is definitely a picture book budding art lovers shouldn't miss. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars preschool learning fun
My preschool special ed students LOVE this book, they would read it 10 times each day if I allowed them to.It's fun, had wonderful pop-ups and pull tabs and reinforces beginning reading skills such as rhyming.A must for children who need encouragement to listen to stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work Of Art
I bought this book based on reviews on this site of the author, Paul O. Zelinsky.I wasn't sure if it was age appropriate for my son (17 months), but he loves books and I just decided to give it a go.My husband and I opened it while our son was sleeping and we just LOVED it.The drawings are amazing and the engineering of the tab movement is unbelivevable. It had us in awe for 10 or 20 minutes. The book might not be kid friendly, but if you can hold your child for a few minutes and show them the movement of the pictures and read the story it will be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it!!
I agree with other reviewers that the pulls are a little stiff on this book, but i just slip a finger in the page while a pull and they all go easily. Not a big deal to me at all. I cannot let my 10 month old play with this book like she does many of her others, but I knew that from the start. She finds it mesmerizing though and I have a feeling that we will get years of use out of this one!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read
This is a short book, but still is one of our son's favorites that he received for his 2nd birthday. He had it memorized in no time at all.Because the pictures are mono-tone, it is a fun book to explore and talk about the shapes.I also like the message that it sends (or at least what I get out of it and elaborate on in my own words) about how people come in all shapes and sizes, and that we should celebrate them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it but it will have to wait
I have loved Dr. Seuss since I was a kid and this book is included. My mistake was showing it to my 17 month old who doesn't really show much interest in it but it's an investment. I know some day it will captivate her as much as it did me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of shapes and great Dr. Seuss rhymes in this sturdy board book.
Although everything is shown in silhouette, there is plenty of color and action and my kids (boy and girl; now 3 and 5) have always like it.There are herds of elephants, steaming machines, flowers, critters and more.
