Editorial Review

The words and illustrations of Dr. Seuss have alway seemed inseparable--a peerless fusion of verbal and visual wit. Yet when the good doctor wrote the manuscript for My Many Colored Days in 1973, he specified that the book should be illustrated by "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me." Twenty-three years later, he has gotten his wish.Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher have produced a series of rich, painterly images that could never be mistaken for faux-Seuss. They have, however, caught something of his simplicity, and just as important, his sense of whimsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Dr. Suess
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
1-0 out of 5 stars Muddy and boring
I was so disappointed with this book. My 9 month old, who absolutely loves reading books (his first word was 'book' and he is constantly dragging books to me to read) tries to close the whole book or reach to the side for other books while I'm reading this to him. And I totally understand why. The illustrations are muddy, muted, and boring. The figures blend together like a bad watercolor. That wonderful Seuss visual whimsy and humor is nowhere to be found. I'm actually mystified by the good reviews. I guess every family is different - but my baby and I are bored to tears by this one.

I dont know who loves this book more, me or my son. He is so captivated by all of the exciting textures, flaps, fur, etc. We picked this book up on a whim, never imagining I would be looking for every other Dr. Seuss Nursery book to add to our collection. It captivates him nightly and I am so pleased that he truly enjoys reading it and hope his love for reading continues. Thank you Dr. Seuss Nursery!!

My 17 month old LOVES this book! Most of the classic Dr. Seuss books are too long & wordy for her (and she really loves reading), so this is a great introduction to the silliness.Plus, this book is very interactive (pets have hair, drink pink ink, play games, etc.)Would definitely recommend it! ... Editorial Review

This elaborate pop-up book adds a spectacular twist to Mother Goose's well-loved rhymes. Paper artist Robert Sabuda, preeminent patriarch of modern pop-up engineering, brings yet another explosion of motion and color to his latest masterpiece. Attributing animal personalities to nursery-rhyme characters, he surprises young readers time and again. In "Jack Be Nimble," for example, the fellow leaping lithely over a candlestick is none other than a grasshopper. And the Man in the Moon is seen from a startling perspective: he has decidedly alien features! Sabuda's quirky take on traditional rhymes, combined with his fantastic folding, moving, spinning paper sculptures, will have pop-up fanciers and Mother Goose devotees clamoring for more. Sturdier than most pop-ups, these three-dimensional constructions are nonetheless vulnerable to tiny grabbing hands. At his best, Sabuda creates breathtaking displays of pop-up craftsmanship, as in the "four and twenty blackbirds" bursting rowdily out of a pie, mirrored sunglasses on every one. At his worst, he creates slightly bewildering beings, such as the star-shaped Jill in "Jack and Jill" tumbling down a mysterious edifice. He may occasionally (and understandably--what a fun job!) get carried away with his engineering feats. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose
This is my favorite Mother Goose collection.Wonderfully illustrated.Sylvia is a talented artist.A good choice for a first born.
3-0 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this as your first Mother Goose
No doubt about it, the illustrations are gorgeous. But while portraying all the familiar characters as animals may be a cute and creative twist, it makes it difficult to explain the rhymes to a toddler.Humpty Dumpty is shown as a duckling hatching (in various stages) from an egg.The dish that ran away with the spoon is a turtle with a plate as a shell and next to it is a crane(?) with a spoon as a beak. When I start to read "There was an old woman..." my kid says "No. Rabbit!"In fact, there are no pictures of people at all! This book is really more for those who own a traditional Mother Goose book and want a more artistic edition, or for kids who can understand that that this is a new take on the characters they are already familiar with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most beautiful edition

From beneath the tickles, kisses, and unfettered affection showered on them by grownups, the children in Vera B. Williams' Caldecott Honor Book cry out for "more more more!" The stars of three little love stories--toddlers with nicknames like "Little Pumpkin"--run giggling until they are scooped up by adoring adults to be swung around, kissed, and finally tucked into bed. Quirky watercolor drawings and colorful text feature multiethnic families, and young readers will rejoice in seeing the center of all the attention: the wiggly, chubby, irresistible toddlers. 5-0 out of 5 stars great read for 1-2 yr. olds
While I did not find this book appealing at first glance, my 1 year old loved it- so much so that I renewed it at the library until they would not let me renew it again. I quickly ordered our own copy as this book was an every day read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A snuggly favorite book for my un-snuggly son
I got this book as a gift, and just for kicks tried it out one day with my then 10-month old son, who is loving but not snuggly.I was totally amazed that he relaxed into my arms and listened to the book from beginning to end.He didn't even try to tear the pages. At 15 months, he still loves this book and always chooses it over any other if given a choice.I won't begin to speculate how or why, but Vera and the illustrator have captured something magic in these pages and in turn have captured the babies and toddlers who read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Would love to give 5 stars... but
As a book for very young children, I don't believe that the readability of the text should be an issue, especially for a Caldecott Honor Book. The first time I read the book, I didn't really notice it.The 2nd time, the lights were down low because I was rocking my infant to sleep.I found the words nearly impossible to read, especially in Little Guy's story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look out it's a "big book."
It doesn't say anywhere that I can see in the description that this is a big book suited for primary grade teachers yet not easy to hold baby on your lap and read.I had no idea when I put it on my wish list. What a surprise! It's a great story with illustrations that provide many teachable opportunities: number recognition, counting cause and effect, telling time, feelings, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best new'dog' book for all ages ...
Along with Carl & Biscuit the dogs in this book are just too special to ignore.I currently work in the children's Dept. of a bookstore chain(& love dogs). When this title came in I had to look read it and make my co-workers look at it too. I have also noticed that it gets moved around quite a bit so people must be interested enough by the cover & subject to pick it up and look through it. When it comes out in 'paperback' it will fly off the shelves. It is just beautiful and so accurate for pups personalities.Love the 'poetry' rather than story line. I have told my people friends about what a cool book it is. It should be sold in pet stores & grooming shops and recommended by Veternarians etc.I'd like to see it sold in the 'pets' section of the store as well. A big THANK YOU to Patricia MacLachlan for this heartwarming collection.

Editorial Review

Oh, why won't Marvin K. Mooney just please go now? In this 1972 classic for "beginning beginners," Dr. Seuss devotes his rhymes to budging the reluctant young Marvin K.: "The time has come. The time is now.Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how." But despite his impatience, our narrator certainly isn't short of ideas on how Marvin could make an exit. "You can go on stilts. You can go by fish. You can go in a Crunk-Car if you wish." Seuss's ever wacky illustrations accompany each new mode of transport, from balloon to broomstick to Bumble-Boat. And if those who are just learning find a word they don't know, chances are Seuss has simply made it up to fill out this ear-pleasing, easy-to-read text. This book is yet another fun and euphonious entry from the good doctor, a silly primer for budding rhymers and readers. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars twilght comes twice
This book puts a lot of descriptive writing in it.It doesn't really have a problem.I love the way the author says "slowly dusk pours the syrup of darkness into the forest".In the pictures, they always put the girl's dog with the girl.I think you would like thiss book if you are 9 and up to 12.I loved this book.Giuliana G. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What you do comes back
I just gave this to a friends' one year old for her birthday. In the inscription I wrote that she ought to read and learn, as whatever she does in life will come back to haunt her.My friend thought the book hysterical. Her husband thinks we're both odd...

JIM, who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Deliciously twisted
One can imagine Edward Gorey mulling over these "Cautionary Tales",subsequently creating succinct Goreyesque illustrations for them. Then years later after presenting his family to us in "The Willowdale Handcar" he undoubtedbly mulled over ideas about families & children and came up with my personal favorite Gorey: The Gashleycrumb Tinies. If you like Gorey & you like the Tinies, you'll enjoy "Cautionary Tales".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bedtime story
My Children loved the beautiful pictures and references to nature. My mother sang me the original song, and it didn't make sense, this version includes lighting bugs, hummingbirds, and teddy bears that children understand.I still sing Sylvia Long's version to my children

5-0 out of 5 stars Hush is fantastic!
My 2 yo son asks for this book by name, and wants it 3-5 times per night most nights. The pictures are so sweet, the cadence is soothing, and it's so nice to have an alternative to the "buy, buy, buy" of the song.I love the song, mind you, but this is a wonderful version, too!The bunnies are so cute together!

Sing to your baby even before you begin to read, and here's one book that makes it easy. Lush and sentimental illustrations, unforgettable words and a lilting lullaby you'll both cherish forever. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars More of a picture book
Though the illustrations ARE lovely, the nursery rhymes are incomplete, shortened versions of the real thing. If you want a picture book, you can't go wrong with this one, but for the classic Mother Goose nursery rhymes, sadly, this book does not deliver.

5-0 out of 5 stars My second perchase of the same book. Book #1 loved to rags.
This is the definative mursery rhyme book. It hasall the classics and a few I was not familliar with. Either way, beautifully written. Illistrations you will want to frame, and the children are facinated by atan early age. This will be my 2nd purchase of this title since mygrandchildren can't get enough. The more times I read it the closer we havebecome. This is an heirloom at our house. Hope you enjoy as much as wehave. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to read to my 7 month old
I was looking for books to engage my 7 month daughter. This book is fantastic as the full story is not in the book so she doesn't get bored easily.the pop ups are special treat for her although I have to keep them away from curious little hands. This book is a MUST buy for your infant

5-0 out of 5 stars The characters come alive!
A lively and interesting pop-up creation! I think the pop-ups are intricately designed and created to make the stories come alive and more enjoyable to read! An interactive way to read Dr. Seuss's remarkable writing. Unfortunately, the stories are not full versions. I wish they were. So, don't expect to find all the stories in one book with interesting pop-ups.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing
I bought this for my 4 year old daughter who loves pop-up books. I thought it would be a good way to introduce her to Dr. Seuss. I was sad to realize that it didn't include the whole book and what is included is very hard to follow and read. It doesn't seem to flow from page to page. The pop-ups are great but do make it hard to read since some of the story is included on them. I'm not sure I would buy this knowing all of this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Native American thinking for children and adults
This book is an excellent resource for teaching children and adults about Native American culture. Specifically, this book focuses on the philosophy of how Turtle Island children are guided through learning as a circle of experiences. People of a western mind frame can appreciate this book as a collection of traditional stories compiled from several Native American nations woven into a story about one boy's quest to find wisdom and eventually earn the privilege of marrying the object of his desire. Without an understanding of the Medicine Wheel, many crucial events of this book will confuse the western mind. This book is meant to be read more than once in order to grasp the depth of all that it can teach children about gaining wisdom while evolving from children to young adults. This book is best used with middle school students whose age is equivalent to that of Anpao at the beginning of the book. If used in a classroom, it's recommended that the teacher read "Seven Arrows" by Hyemeyohsts Storm or the "Native People Native Ways" series by White Deer of Autumn in order to gain an appreciation for the complexities of Anpao as a cultural resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book
This is my favorite book. Not only was it written with the exact precision I strive to imitate, but it was captivating in all ways. I could relate to the hero so much that I could have been the hero, and everything seemed to make sense, like it was written to me. I love Native American culture, but you don't have to in order to appreciate this book; it isn't about that. I would call it the greatest adventure novel of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Yet Confusing
Being in PACE (Plano Acdemic Creative Edcation) it is required that students like me must read 9TH grade material.( this year im in 7TH grade) Me, being SUPER catious of what I read, was forced by my parents to read this (how diabolical) . When I started reading this material, I wont say it was bad BUT it was a little confusing starting from the book to the part where the woman hangs in air from a something... Gets killed by the sun... a litte boy survives... (read the book)I would not regecomend this book for 7TH graders and anyone below that... ... Read more
