What can I say?Seuss is always great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Dr. Seuss book ever!
I can't believe this book is written by Dr. Seuss! It is so boring, dull, and has the weirdest ending ever.It teaches bad lessons to kids - all day long the kid refuses to get up and in the end his Mom looks at him sheepishly along with his two siblings while he smiles triumphantly in his bed."I guess he really means it,"says Mom.Huh? What kind of lesson is that? The poetry is not clever, fun or catchy like most of his other works. The illustrations are not done by Dr. Seuss and they are not very interesting or coloful.Very, very ho-hum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't woozy-snooze through this!
Have you ever had one of those mornings when you just can't get out of bed? This video might not help that, but it is very funny. In I Am NOT Getting Up Today a small boy almost begs his family and friends to just leave him alone so he can sleep. I think The Shape of Me and Other Stuff is educational, because it talks about shapes. Great Day for UP is very clever. I sometimes find myself jumping whenever the word "up" is metioned. In A People House is one of the more humorous stories. When a couple come home to see a bird and a mouse exploring their house they actually throw them out. It's very funny. So, don't get drowsy, buy this Begginer Book video. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two Babies Enjoy This One, and Are Inspired to Play!
Annie Kubler's ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT is a great little book. We have had this book for about a month at my house, and my 10-1/2 month old baby and a good friend who is about 22 months old both enjoy this book a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Toddler's Favorite!
I bought this book for my son when he was about 12 months old.It immediately became his favorite book...he loved for me to read/sing it to him before bedtime. He's now 20 months old and still has me singing it to him almost everyday. He loves to flip the pages with me and study the drawings of the babies. The art work is absolutely wonderful. He usually only goes for books with real life pictures, but this one is an exception. When I first picked up this book I thought, "Doesn't this song only have 2 verses...it might get old real quick."But I was pleasantly surprised to see there was much more to it...we love sharing the new verses to this old favorite with other kids...they love it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for my 9 month old
My daughter loves this book. The illustrations are engaging because they are simple. When we read this one it is never just once. This is a get excited playtime book, not a bedtime book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Meet Sophie. She sees herself as the too-tall "Mount Everest ofteenage girls," who, along with her friends, often suffers from "lackonookiedisease." She's dating smoky, sexy Dylan, covertly chatting online with"cybersoul"-mate Chaz, and secretly nursing a crush on sweet, geeky Murphy. Hertwo best friends are closer to her than sisters, and she "hates hating" her soapopera-addicted mom, wishing "she would show half as much interest in my life asshe does in Luke and Laura's." In other words, Sophie is a typical teenage girl. What is not so typical is how author Sonia Sones records all of Sophie'sthoughts in a freewheeling verse that is such a naked outpouring of innerlonging, most readers will blush in embarrassed recognition of their ownremembered or current teenage desires. Sones gently leads both the reader andSophie towards an understanding of the difference between love and lust asSophie slowly comes to realize that Dylan's outsides are no match for Murphy'sinsides. Autobiographical of Sones, perhaps? The author claims it isn't so, andshe's probably right. With her frank manner, lusty thoughts, and hiddeninsecurities, Sophie reflects many teenage girls, past and present. No womanwill be able to read this heartfelt verse novel and not find a bit of herself inSophie's secret, sexy thoughts. Sones's decadent, almost shamefully deliciouscollection of angst poems is a loving and amazingly accurate tribute toadolescent girlhood. (Ages 12 and older) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars sonya sones at her best
This is the story of Sophie, who is a typical teenage girl. She is on the path to finding her true love, but it's not as easy as it seems.First there's Lou, who drools, then sexy Dylan, then her "cybersoulmate," Chaz. But then, at the Halloween dance, she finds someone she connects with, but he's masked. She makes it her personal mission to find her masked man. When she does, she is shocked, but not as repelled as she first thinks. This book is told entirely in free verse, and is a quick read, but is very realistic about the power of peer pressure, and very touching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic
This was a great book! Sophie is just like a 15 year old girl; One can relate to it from their teenage years whether they're way beyond those years, or right in the middle! The way it is written is a can't-put-it-down type of book! I'd definitely recommend to anyone, mainly any teenage girls out there wanting a fun book to relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really great YA Lit. book
This is one of the books I chose to read for my YA Lit. class. I have to say, after the last one I read, I was very impressed and pleased with this one. It probably wouldn't interest most guys, but as a girl I loved it. It was very lyrical and charming and funny. Her style reminded me a lot of Sandra Cisneros. I would definitely recommend this book for any type of reader. I gobbled it up in one day. ... Read more

"Science Verse" and " Math Curse" both are hilarious books. The tapes they come with also come with the funnyness of the books. I find "Science Verse" a lot more non-thinking-about-it book than Math Curse, but "Math Curse" is more brain racking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Fun
I love this book. I read it to my preschoolers all month before Halloween and they never tire of it. The illustrations are just beautiful and very enjoyable for the children. The finger play rhyme in the book is very familiar to most of the children and they like to read along. They also enjoy voting for their favorite of the 5 little pumpkins. Very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ooooo-oooo Went the Wind and Out Went the Light!
You remember the little song from grade school about the five little pumpkins! This absolutely charming book uses the lyrics of that Halloween song and combines them with full double page illustrations in bright water-colors.The fun and excitement of trick or treat night is captured so well in this book.Join the neighborhood witches, devils, ghosts and a cute black cat on a visit to the skeleton's haunted house! The five little jack-o-lanterns roll along for some good high-spirited fun with nothing scary that might trouble little ones. Make some great memories when you share this book with children. Happy Halloween! ... Read more

I was fortunate to hear the author speak in the early 90s in my hometown of Syracuse, NY.He is an engaging storyteller. It was then that I discovered his book. The artwork in this edition is rich and appealing. The vignettes of each moon, combined with the illustrations, make an appealing canvas for young and/or exploring minds.

This book is an excellent work of Native American children's literature.Joseph Bruchac is a well-known Abenaki story-teller who profiles in this book the thirteen moons of the year, and profiles for each moon what isimportant about that season to different Native Nations. The artwork is abeautiful compliment to the story. If you are looking for a solid andsensitive look at inter-tribal stories for children, this is a great placeto start! ... Editorial Review

This classic Seuss title stars a happy-looking quadruped from the shores of Lake Winna-Bango who has the most amazing antlers and the kindest disposition. Alas! Everyone, but everyone, takes advantage of his generosity, and before long he has three-quarters of the animal kingdom nesting in the convenient perches atop his head. ("They asked in a fox, who jumped in from the trees, / They asked in some mice and they asked in some fleas.") You might think someone would take pity, but nobody seems to like an oddball, and all Thidwick gets for his trouble is complaints and contempt. Unable to cross the lake when winter threatens, he looks all set to starve--and then things get even worse. He is saved from certain death just in time, swims the lake, and joins the herd again. One reason this Seuss is so good: it has a moral, but the moral isn't pressed too far and the exuberant linguistic fun isn't subservient to it. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

This book should be in every child's library (and most adults as well). This is the starter book for Orwell's Animal Farm.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIDWICK THE BIG-HEARTED MOOSE
By far, Dr. Suess' best.Too bad this book is not acknowledged and advertised as his other silly books are. By far the best for the simple moral message a child can understand for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars 39 years of loving this book!
I bought this book 39 years ago at a church sale when I was 6 years old--yes, I used my own money!I loved it then and I love it now.The illustrations are a hoot--seeing one critter after another move into poor Thidwick's horns has always made me laugh. And, I like to think of myself as a nice guy too and a moral fellow, just like poor Thidwick. So, the lesson of seeing people take advantage of one's good nature has served me as I've gone through life.In college I majored in Political Philosophy and I thought of this book then. The lesson for me was--Bad people will use your morality against you while themselves being unaccountable.Bad people will break the law all the time, but if a good person breaks the law...listen to them scream! And of course, poor Thidwick will do anything to keep from breaking the law (in this case the law of hospitality), even starve to death or be shot by trophy hunters, rather than eject his "guests."The law has been distorted and perverted in Thidwick's case. His immoral guests remind Thidwick that if he's to be a good host then Thidwick must cater to their needs. They don't / won't consider Thidwick's needs. The ungrateful guests seem offended that they might have some responsibility for Thidwick's suffering.Years later when I read a book by Ayn Rand, I thought of Thidwick during several passages. But this is most importantly a children's book that children love!My 4 year old son picks this book to have me read it to him regularly. If he didn't like it, what would it matter that his dad likes it so much! ... There should be a law that requires every child to sit on Grandpa's knee as he chants "Trot, trot, to Boston; trot, trot, to Lynn." Grownups who still giggle at the thought of Little Jack Horner pulling a plum out of his Christmas pie, or who make a wish on a star, murmuring "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight" know the secret. They're the ones who will be handing down those same nursery rhymes to their own children, preserving an age-old tradition. But no child should be left behind.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchants my 2-year-old every day, for 30-45 minutes
My son first latched on to this Mother Goose collection at about 21 months, and for the last 3 months, we've read the whole thing through nearly every day. He'll spend 30 or 45 mintues with me, reading the rhymes, enjoying the songs (there are several for which the tunes are fairly well known), and looking forward to the ones such as "patty cake" which have a game attached to them. While he's got a pretty decent attention span for his age, this is by far the activity he'll do for the longest time. He's starting to learn the rhymes himself now, and it's become a very participatory activity to read it with him.I'm enjoying it tremendously, with the warm and fuzzy, family-celebrating illustrations, the inclusion of many of my childhood favorites, and some old rhymes which are new to me, and very charming (Wibbleton to Wobbleton, for example, and The Big Ship Sails on the Alley, Alley Oh).I've hidden the other Mother Goose collections we were given as gifts, because I find this by far the most appealing, in its choices of rhymes and songs, the charm of its illustrations, and its uncrowded layouts which don't squeeze too much text onto the pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars non-smarmy, non-creepy illustrations

Lots of people know the nursery rhyme, "Hey Diddle Diddle," but hasanyone ever thought about what happens each night after it's read? The dish runsaway with the spoon, and, presumably, they come back later, otherwise the rhymecouldn't go on without them. But one night, when the dish and spoon take off, they simply don't return! The fiddle-playing cat, laughing dog (who turns out tobe quite a grump when he's not playing his part), and the sleepy, moon-hoppingcow set out to search for their missing friends. Along the way they encounterLittle Boy Blue, the spider from "Little Miss Muffet," Humpty Dumpty'srepairman, and a big bad wolf. But will they catch up with the dish and thespoon before the next reading? And can all of them dodge the dangers of anafter-hours, fairy-tale world?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So cute...
The author mixes a traditional rhyme with dialog between the characters. They are in search of Dish and Spoon but instead of all of them getting along, they fight and argue about what to do next. Some of the characters want to change the end of the rhyme but others want to get Dish and Spoon before the nursery rhyme is read again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be included on your child's school supply list!
This is a super book that will not only increase you and your child's vocabulary, but will become a useful tool for your kids' writing assignments for school!I've had numerous writing assignments come home from my grade school kids that required rhyming and creative writing. This book came in SOOOOOO handy, it really gave us an advantage and allowed us to create more vivid stories than trying to come up with rhyming words instead of out of our over used and limited words off the top of our head. When in question, we reach for THE SCHOLASTIC RHYMING DICTIONARY!
2-0 out of 5 stars this is too basic
all they do is take every suffix and play the alphabet game, just running down the list, there are no complex rhymes half of common words are left out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for younger people intrested in poetry!!!
This book is a great book for any younger person intrested in writing poetry, songs, raps, and etc. I think that this book is very easy to use and understand. I know I have said that this book is mainly for kids, but I am 15 and I still use this book for a lot of peotry that I write for school. So basiclly it is a great book for most people to use. The book also has funny pictures in it to help you know what the word is. Overall this is a great rhyming book.

This book contains many great quotes from all sorts of Dr. Seuss books. Many of the entries in this book can be related to real life values.

5-0 out of 5 stars `A book of common sense from a man who wrote about non-sense.'
Dr. Seuss is unfortunately looked over by some people as just a guy who wrote silly little children's books. That may be partially true, but all of his books had a much deeper meaning if you are willing to be open-minded and take a closer look. His work is brilliant and outlandishly creative; so much so that he is recognized as the creator of the word `Nerd' in the English language when the word was first featured in his 1950 book `If I Ran the Zoo.' Some people believe that it is unfair to take quotes from his work after his death and related it to `lessons of life' the way this book does and that the quotes have no relation at all to what they are connected with. I don't believe that is true at all; I believe that he wrote these stories with the exact meaning they are realted too, which is why his books are brilliant. Here are two of my favorite quotes from the book so you can judge for yourself...
2-0 out of 5 stars This "Book" is about 50 cents worth of Dr. Seuss...
This is not a critique of Dr. Seuss, nor a bash of his works... BUT... REALLY...It's almost like the few pages of this tiny book get lost between the covers. You can read and digest what little has been printed in this book in less than 2 minutes(even if you're not the fastest reader!).Considering the wealth of writings of Dr. Seuss, please don't waste your time with this pitiful excuse for a publication.Just buy the books... you'll get a LOT more bang for your buck! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for older kids and adults
I really enjoyed the details in this book about from where poetry stems.I loved the idea of just watching the wolrd around you and seeing if a poem somes to you. It does!My only concern is the book uses language that would be too difficult for the average 5th-6th grader to understand.I like that poems from kids are included, but this book seems more appropriate for a teacher to reach and intergrate into his/her curriculum.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book for beginners
Here's what I didn't like: the personal approach to poetry writting, using as examples personal anecdotes at the beginning of some chapters; the use of bad poems written by students instead of poems written by great poets; the superficial approach to poetry writting.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book for learning how to write poetry!
Hi, I really enjoyed reading Ralph Fletcher's book "Poetry Matters: Writing a Poem from the inside out." He gives lots of good examples. He has interviews with two other poets in the book for ideas on poetry. He makes poetry interesting and fun to learn! I also enjoyed his poetry! ... Read more

Editorial Review

"I'm as quick as a cricket, I'm as slow as a snail. I'm as small as an ant, I'm as large as a whale." Parents and teachers choose this big square book for the message of self-confidence. Toddlers love it for the singsong phrases and Don Wood's large, silly, endearing illustrations, which feature a boy mimicking different kinds of animals. At one point, he is pictured sipping tea formally with a fancy poodle ("I'm as tame as a poodle") and on the very next page he is swinging through trees ("I'm as wild as a chimp"). Whether brave or shy, strong or weak, in the end the young boy celebrates all different, apparently contradictory parts of himself. With a confident grin, he lifts his arms up and declares, "Put it all together and you've got ME!" (Baby to age 6) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This was the book that I grew up with and learned to read by.It's a great book for children because of the repetitions and cute illustrations.Children who can't even read can look at the pictures and recite the book for you.A definate must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big pictures, easy to understand
I love this book. My boys love this book. We read it on a daily basis multiple times. My 3 year old can practically read it to his little brother. I actually went to a short literacy class on books for children and they read this one as an example of a good selection. It is very simple with large pictures, but is great for introducing comparisons and adjectives. ("I'm as quick as a cricket") It's simplicity is appealing yet it also uses words that are a little less common in a preschooler's vocabulary. All around one of our favorites!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely little book
This book reminds me of some of the books that I loved as a child.Books where an adult finally "gets it" and understands that sometimes I'm as loud as a lion and sometimes I'm as shy as a shrimp.Books where the words are good but the pictures can be even better. The pictures can stimulate the imagination in so many ways.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss let's somebody else draw his book on "Up"
"Great Day for Up" is a unique Dr. Seuss book and you can tell this just by looking at the cover. That is because while the book is written by Dr. Seuss it features the jolly drawings of the English artist Quentin Blake.Until this point every time I have read a book written by Dr. Seuss it was also illustrated by Dr. Seuss and when somebody else did the drawings Dr. Seuss used the name Theo. LeSieg (which is "Geisel" backwards). So the fact that this is a real "Dr. Seuss" book drawn by somebody else is pretty special.4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning readers.
Ya, ya, ya so this book teaches about the meanings of the word "up".But, to me that takes a backseat to the fun rhythm and rhymes that make a child WANT to be able to read the book by themselves. The small vocabulary, phonetically spelled words and visual clues are wonderful for early readers. My step-son enjoys reading this book together at bedtime and can actually read it to US now.I love the "bright and early" books from Dr. Seuss for building early reading skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great day for up
The book was about everyone waking up, getting outside, and having fun. All the characters interacted together, the played outside, and everyone made new friends. I enjoyed reading this book, just he way Dr. Seuss wrote it makes you want to keep reading it. It kept me entertained even though I'm not a little kid. Children between the ages of 4-8 will love this book. It teaches kids to wake up, get out and play, and just have fun; instead of just wasting their time inside doing nothing and watching T.V. If the kids couldn't read then this would be a good book to help them out with because there's not a lot of writing and the words are easy. I loved the ending of the book but you'll have to read it to find out!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My son loves these silly songs
I'd suggest adding a CD with a tune so old parents can remember the melody...other than that...great.His favorite is Something in My Brother's Underpants.Of course, he's 5, so why wouldn't a song about stinky diapers be his favorite?

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Katz is a genius!!
We have every one of Alan Katz's "silly dilly" song books, and we have worn them out. He gave life to lots of old stand-by songs, and now he's done the same to Christmas. I can't tell you the number of nights I've laid in bed with my son singing Katz's adorable, and hysterical new lyrics. If you're not a "silly-dilly" devotee yet, it's never too late to start. Don't have kids without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book from ages 1 to 100!!!!
I bought this book for my kids but the adults in the family are still passing it around. This is a book that will be loved by ALL.I laughed so hard the first time I read it I was in tears. It takes all of the Christmas songs we know and love and makes them into spoofs about the holidays we can all relate to told from the view point of the kids. From going to the mall to hanging the lights to caroling theres something in this book for everyone!

Editorial Review

Richard Scarry's bright and humorous animal characters have been charming children for decades. Always inventive in the world of animal fashion, Scarry shows the cow jumping over the moon in pearls and a pink dress, and the little dog who "laughed to see such sport" sports a sailor suit. You won't hear "I can't see the pictures!" with this book; its large size makes it a good choice for group story hour. This collection of 50 Mother Goose rhymes is especially appropriate for toddlers; most of the two-page spreads contain only one illustrated rhyme. (Many children younger than three can focus better on one simple verse than on many rhymes on each page.) Read more
