4-0 out of 5 stars A must read
The Dream Keepers and other poems is a book that you must read. Langston Hughes puts you through so many different moods during this book. The poems reach out to you. I especially like the I,TOO poem. This poems speaks about progress, determination, and being focused. There is a poem for everyone to connect with. The illusrations byBrian Pinkney are black and white with a lot of curvy lines. There was a greatof time put in each. The pictures assist in putting you in the mood of the poem. The only thing left to say is read the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Words Come Alive
Hughes' words come to life in this book of poetry. This collection, originally issued in 1932, is as powerful as it was seventy years ago.As an added bonus, there are seven new poems for the reader to enjoy. The struggle and celebration of the African-American experience is apparent here.Brian Pinkney's black-and-white scratchboard illustrations add life and expression to the poems.Hughes' classic collection is appealing and inspirational. This astonishingly wonderful set of poems is definitely a collection that would spark the interest of children learning about poetry.Hughes' gift of lively words live on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for struggling early reader
My sons are twins and one is a strong reader. The other twin feels that he is not a strong reader but this book has helped to increase his confidence. It helps that there is a variety of difficulty levels in the short plays and also that we can each take different roles. Also the reading is only a few sentences at a time so it's a good way for an early reader to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Emergent Readers
This book is great for beginning readers!I will be using it in my first grade classroom at the beginning of the year.
4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read-aloud resource for new readers.
My 7 year old son loves for us to share in the reading of the occassional play that we come across. We had looked and looked for a book of plays and when I found this, I thought, "What the heck?I'll try it." Myson ran through the house shreiking with joy when he opened the package andwe ended up staying up 'til 2am reading them all over and over and over. The plays average two or three pages and are in big type with niftypictures that are not intimidating. Some are of 2 characters and some arefor many--not all are specifically sexed-so any reader can fill a part in agroup. With my son, he takes all "boy" parts and I get the rest. If there is no designation to sex, we divide it right down the middle.Ithas been pure joy to hear my son expressing his reading skills with thisbook. For a new and/or timid reader, this could be just right.(BTW--Myson is neither, he just loves plays--if your child does too, this isperfect.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I cannot stand this book!
I LOVE Dr. Suess.Really.We have lots of his books and I enjoy reading all of them to my kids with the exception of this one.It annoys me to no end. That's just it...it seems like there is no end. It's not rhymie or sing-songy like his others. It's just repetitive and boring and ..... oh just YUCK!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Seuss Classic
Dr. Seuss's second book was a childhood staple of mine. If one believes in the destiny of early influences then this book might just be responsible for my entry into the hat business. This great, lesser known Suess story, addresses the fact that the hat has historically served to establish the individual's rank in society and that relationship to the origins of hat etiquitte.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can Bartholomew Remove His Hat?
Bartholomew Cubbins, lowest of the subject of King Derwin has gone into town to sell some cranberries for his parents. When the king passes by, he doffs his hat, only have the king stop and accuse him of not taking his hat off.Surprised to find it is true, he takes his hat off, only to find a third hat on his head. The king has him arrested and begins trying to figure out ways to keep the hat off.His wise men and magicians are certainly no help.Meanwhile, Bartholomew must figure out a way to get his hat to stay off his head before the consequences become drastic.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun
For anyone who jumped rope a great deal (this excludes me) or swung the rope while others jumped (this includes me), this book is sure to have some favorite rhymes. As such, it is an interesting way to initiate cross-generational discussions - jump-rope rhymes are school yard folklorewith astounding staying power. The book is also useful as a way toencourage young "couch potatoes" to get a bit of time outsidewith requiring outside to be a large space.5-0 out of 5 stars Hopping fun! It will take you back to your playground days.
What great fun to be reminded of the jump rope rhymes of my youth. And even greater fun to share them with my daughter. I hope you enjoy this collection of rhymes as much as we do. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Optime! But be warned...Tougher than you think
I am a three year Latin student, and am particularly obsessed with the language. When I got this book, I was expecting a light and funny Latin read. However, I was surprised by its difficulty. Because the book has been (brilliantly) rendered into the same rhyming meter as Seuss' English version, the words in Latin do not directly correspond to the English. This makes it infinately more challeging, in that you cannot check your translation against the English book. In fact, it took me a good month or so to get through it. Despite the challenge, it was highly enjoyable to read. I am amazed by the skill it would take to rhyme the words in Latin in the same way Seuss originally did, whilekeeping the same baisic meaning. If students of the language would like a slightly easier read, I would highly recommend "Ferdinandus Taurus", which is also fun to read but with less complex language and grammar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Latin Students
I am a Latin minor at a California University, and have studied Latin for about three years. This book was part of my class curriculum of Latin poetry, and was a nice break from the works of Ovid and Virgil! It is a simple book to translate, though some of the gerunds can be a little tricky. This book is a lot of fun, and is helpful in learning new vocabulary. If I remember correctly, all of the words used are given English meanings in the back of the book.I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is learning Latin.Though you may get annoyed by comments made by bystanders who think you are reading "The Cat in the Hat."

5-0 out of 5 stars Appeals to any audience
Having studied Latin throughout high school, I could appreciate the innovation and creativity necessary to translate Dr. Seuss' classic story while still preserving rhyme and meter. However, my little sister, who has just recently learned to read on such classics as "The Cat in the Hat," perhaps enjoyed "Cattus Petasatus" even more than I did.Not automatically looking to identify subject and verb, she giggled with delight at the new words that roll off the tongue with the catchy meter and bragged to my parents that she was able to speak Latin!Because the pictures are the same as the English, she was able to follow the storyline and give expression to the words.Read more

Editorial Review

Marco is in a pickle. His father has instructed him to keep his eyes peeled for interesting sights on the way to and from school, but all Marco has seen is a boring old horse and wagon. Imagine if he had something more to report, say, a zebra pulling the wagon. Or better yet, the zebra could be pulling a blue and gold chariot. No, wait! Maybe it should be a reindeer in that harness. Marco's story grows ever more elaborate as he reasons that a reindeer would be happier pulling a sled, then that a Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mulberry Street
The main character in this book is named Marco, and he has a slight problem with an over-active imagination. Every morning when Marco leaves home to walk to school, 'Dad always says to me, "Marco, keep your eyelids up and see what you can see."'We meet Marco when he is on the way back from school and all he's noticed 'was a horse and a wagon on Mulberry Street.' Marco isn't too proud of this observation, "That can't be my story. That's only a start. I'll say that a ZEBRA was pulling that cart!" 4-0 out of 5 stars what was that
I think that the book was a good one b/c the writer has a good amagination with the reindeer and all the other edzotic animals. all in all it was a good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Leslie and Lisa's Review
My favorite book out of the ten I read is And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss. I liked this book because after you read it your imagination is running wild. It is a book about a young boy's imagination when you can't stop it from running like an Energizer battery. After the story was over I couldn't stop thinking about more things to add to the young boy's story to make it even better. It is a great book for this project because you are really tapping into your childhood and your young imagination. I think everyone should read this book to see the magic of being a child. If you like Dr. Seuss books this is one you will really enjoy. It is fast pace and it rhymes to help the story be more fun. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of my two-year-old twins
I had this book on the top shelf of the kids' (two year old boy and girl) bookcase for safe-keeping until they got a little older and a little better at page-turning.It's far too nice a book, I thought, to be torn and wrinkled by a couple of toddlers who can't even appreciate it.It contains a wonderful variety of poems, and Eric Carle's artwork is stunning. He devotes a two-page spread to most of the animals; the whale at the beginning takes up four pages.
5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!!!
This is a fantastic book, full of wonderful poetry and Eric Carle's trademark collage art. This book includes poetry selections that span the cultures, including Native American, aboriginal, and Japanese to name a few. Many of the big names in poetry are here, from Shakespeare to Ogden Nash. I especially liked the reference to creation included with a quote from Genesis and a picture of a whale. My personal favorite poem in the book is "Mother Doesn't Want a Dog," and why "She's making a mistake." This is a great introduction to poetry for children that the whole family loves. Truly a great addition to my homeschool library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rhyming?
This book was very cute which is why I gave it such a high rating. This book is a poor example of how to rhyme. There are several lines in this book that are close to rhyming but it isn't quite there in several instances.Good for teaching counting up and backwards from ten.

5-0 out of 5 stars Night Fun
As a third grade teacher, I found this book useful on the 55th day of school. After reading the book, the children made a pyramid using manipulatives for the bats. We used 1" tiles. This demonstrates a growing pattern using +1 pattern to grow with. This is a nice lead-in to multiplication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Create life-long memories with your children or grandchildren
Mesmorizing & magical. These poems are fun to read with kids ... for both kid and adult ... because the interplay of sounds is magical. And for the adults, there is deeper meaning to savor and be mesmorized by for long after the last page is turned. I read these with my kids over a decade ago, Just re-found the book and read them again with them a decade later and they smiled ear to ear at the memory of reading it together so long ago, and loved doing it again, but this time at a deeper level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great poetry to read with a friend!
I like this book because it's a fun way to learn about insects. You can also read it with a friend. My favorite part about the book was the poem called Water Boatman. It's m favorite because it was very funny. I also liked the one called Honeybees because you got to use two different personalities. The queen bee had a wonderful life and the worker bee has a hard life and hates being a bee. I would recommend this book to my teachers as a learning book about poetry and insects.
3-0 out of 5 stars Don't Read Alone
Don't pick this book of poetry up unless you are with someone else who wants to read it too. This book is meant to be read aloud by two people at the same time, if you try reading it silently it gets very boring. If you are into performance and like to practice reading things aloud, then this book is great. As a future school teacher I have seen a lot of possibilities come from this book. Some struggling reader could be motivated to practice quite a bit by this book if they have a partner to read with (parent, classmate, friend, etc.), but it is not at all entertaining to read in any other way than with "two voices." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful night before Christmas
The text does not change, of course, from one edition of Clement Moore's poem to the next, so the illustrations are what give this book it's freshness and savor.A genuine delight.

5-0 out of 5 stars one for our collection
This is my favorite version of this poem - we have a few, but this tops them all. It's an easy read (we have some versions which are too wordy) and the illustrations are enchanting. It will be a tradition to read together each year.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book
The illustrations are beautifully colorful. My only complaint is I bought this to give as a gift and there's a big gold sticker on the front that says "free gift wrap inside".I'd rather that not be on there but the gift wrap WAS nice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Twist!
Dr Seuss is nothing in comparison to Roald Dahl in REVOLTING RHYMES. I actually had fun reading this book so did the kids I read it to. There are a few words I have to explain but it didn't take out the fun of the book. This book plays around with a few of the very known fairy tales known by kids and swing it around in an interesting parody.
5-0 out of 5 stars Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl
I had misplaced my copy bought in England years ago and was thrilled to find it available on Amazon. Though I'm not much of a Dahl fan, Revolting Rhymes is an absolute gem - it is hilarious and intelligent and such a wicked bit of fun. I recommend it to anyone, adults included. Don't let the schoollibrary hide it and deny your kids the joy of these non-saccharine tales.

Editorial Review

Tasha Tudor--illustrator of more than 70 books for children--is known for her charmingdrawings of children and animals; delicate, flower-filled borders; and delightful settings fromdays gone by. In this edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's venerated volume of children's poems,Tudor's old-fashioned illustrations perfectly complement the poetry that has survived a centuryin print. Here is a comfortable world of sunny gardens and storybooks, where children play withtoy soldiers and imaginary friends. You may remember some of these poems from your ownchildhood, such as "My Shadow," "The Swing," and "The Land ofCounterpane." If time is any judge, this garden of delights will stay a perennial favorite.Read more

Just love the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. Loved them
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful edition of a classic
A Child's Garden of Verses has always been one of my favorite books, and over the years I've given dozens of copies of it as First Birthday presents to the new children in my life. This is the most beautiful edition I have ever seen of these beloved poems. The illustrations are wonderful! They're taken from numerous editions over the years, and they cover a variety of styles and time periods.I couldn't be happier with this book, and I can't wait for the opportunity to give it to more children who I hope will grow to love it as much as I do.
5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptional book
The poems are charming and the illustrations are beautiful. I like it as much today as I did when I was a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent motivational look at learning that can happen in schools
My brother shared this book with me a couple years ago.He enjoyed reading it with his two young kids. They loved both the school and teachers in the stories. The book highlights what schools should be about; student interest, learning, excitement, fun; in contrast to what often takes over in schools today -- tests, meaps, rules.I found it motivating and keep it on my desk at work (at school) to remind me of what's important. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Splendid
This is some of the best poetry and prose I have ever read by any young person or adult. As a poet I am not easily impressed, but this was some of the best poetry I have ever read. I was equally impressed by the photographs as well. I like the fact that the photographer intentionally did not try to fit the photos with the writings. The rawness of the book was what made it so fascinating. I picked the pick up intending to teach some of the young girls I work with in my afterschool program, but these girls were certainly on another level with their writing. I am now looking forward to reading the male companion. Great Work!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Things I Have To Tell You Comments
The book Things I Have To Tell You was an exciting book for me. Its about a girls lives today and how they deal with them. They expressed themselves and showed there view points and life with the world by writing poetry. The poems were different than any other poetry book. They had live stories and told truth, they did not hold back on any information. These girls i think have wrote outstanding poems and i hope they keep doing so and making more books like this one.
