5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favourite!
This was actually my sister's book when we were growing up - but I remember absolutely loving it back then. Now that I have a son, I bought it to read with him. Although he is only 2, he loves the rhythm of the poems and the wacky pictures. His favourite is "Windshield Wipers".A fabulous book for parents to share with their children!

5-0 out of 5 stars my favourite book, and I'm 25
I would recommend this book to anyone. It is fun and fantastic, the illustrations are terrific, and the poems resonate well with children and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Childhood Favorite
The Alligator Pie series filled my childhood with fun and whimsy.I'm pregnant now and I want to buy a whole new collection so that my child will remember "Peter was a pilot, who flew a jumbo jet, who crashed in Lake Ontario and got his bottom wet."Silly and fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
This book is one of the best books you can read to an audience! The book is read from a voice. The voice is either a little sibling, kindergardener or another character. When the reader becomes that character, the story involves humor and excitment! I have seen the book performed by the author hisself and the effect on the students and staff was remarkeable. If you can become this voice and encourage your students to read, this is the book for you! The students will be encouraged to create their own poem with matching illustrations and want to perform for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry with a silly attitude
The first thing that stands out about this book of poetry is Tedd Arnold's typical illustration style. The children are shaped like sausages with arms and legs with HUGE bug eyes. However, they are expressive little children who do things that kids will laugh at.If you get someone to read these poems aloud with a lot of expression, then it is a riot.My favorite one for gross-out factor is "Booger Love."I was the aide to a wonderful school teacher who read these poems to her kids during a free moment, and they LOVED them.Try it on your own kids today!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT poems for EVERY child!
I picked up this book at a conference when I read the poem The Scratch. This poem fits my three year old perfectly.I had the idea to assign poems to my students who are very behind in reading.I am a the Special Education Coordinator for a very small school. My students LOVED the poems and are learning the poems to perform in front of parents and friends! The poems are easy to read and fun.I'm so glad that I found this book.It has been very motivating for my students. My daughter enjoys the funny poems as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, for the love of children
To answer the extremely perseptive reviewer, who seemed to have gotten so much more from this book than any body else besides myself...yes, Eugene Field had a son who died. He wrote a poem about it too, and it is called "Little Boy Blue". My mother used to torture herself reading this poem..and it got so bad she just couldn't any more. This book of poetry is just wonderful. The illustrations by the renown artist Maxfield Parish are a pure delight, a treasure unto themselves.
4-0 out of 5 stars Touching and memorable.
Some of these poems are for children. Some are merely about children. Some are for grown ups who love children. Some are for children who have no idea how dear they are to the grown ups in their lives.5-0 out of 5 stars Imaginativeand memorable poetryfor all
This was a book from my childhood and which I have searched for many years. So happy to find it at Amazon's. Maxfield Parrish, the illustrator ,with his imagination was the right choice for this book of poetry. EugeneField's love of children and the sadness which was part of his life makesthe poetry memorable. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The stupid tooth book
Boring, boring, and oh, did I mention boring? It was short, not terribly clever at all, and the illustrations are not even Dr. Suess. I felt ripped off.I don't know why I thought it was tooth "fairy" related, as our daughter just lost her first tooth and we thought this would tie in.It doesn't.Neither of my kids (3 and 6)liked this even a little. They both said it was...boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Theo. LeSieg on the importance of caring for your teeth
You start off reading "The Tooth Book" wondering why Dr. Seuss, writing under his Theo. LeSieg pseudonym, is taking so much time answering the question "Who has teeth?"That is because the answer seems rather obvious and even more so when this book gets to the importance of teeth to chewing, smiling, speaking, and trapeze artists who are supporting their partners by something they are holding on to with their teeth. Then the book touches on a few animals that do not have teeth, and again you find yourself asking "So what?"At which point the book springs it trap and we find out that "The Tooth Book" is not only entertaining, it is (surprise, surprise) educational as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My 3-year-old loves this book! It gives the youngsters the idea of baby teeth and permentent teeth. The pictures are cute and the text are fun too. My son giggles every time we read it to him. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Laura Li seems perfect in every way--beautiful, kind, smart. At her job in the school library she is smiling and helpful to everyone, and at home she cares for her ailing brother like a dutiful Asian daughter. But after midnight a very different Laura Li secretly sneaks out to wild dance clubs--desperate to escape from the pressures exerted by her cold, demanding mother and her absent father. Her teachers and the other kids reveal themselves in these short poems as they wonder about Laura, and two boys even write her love poetry, but a few people are beginning to suspect she may be on a collision course with herself. "It is time, perhaps," Laura thinks bitterly, "to dance without stopping at the bar of heaven's gate."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving story
This book explores the life of one girl and the perceptions others have of her.The layout of the text gives the story more power and immediacy. The points of view change quickly from one character to the next. This book could be used as a springboard for some interesting discussions about duty, race, love, appearances, suicide, etc.A short read, but highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Split Image
I thought that this book was very good, but also very interesting. It was neat how the book was written in poems, but I thought that there were too many characters.I would definately read this book again for a short read.I thought it was awsome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review
"Split Image" By Mel Glenn. Laura-Li is a romodel for all. Shes smart, funny, pretty and works at the library. Everyone looks up to her, some are even jealous of her, others admirer her. But after dark its another story. Laura-Li sneaks out at night to loud banging clubs and is introduced to the 'world of drugs'. Here she forgets all of her troubles at home, taking care of her brother, her strict mother, and her father being away. Laura-Li thinks that she has to solve her problems with taking her own life "It is time, perhaps to dance without stopping at the bar of heaven's gate". Shes not the perfect angel we all thought."Split Image" was really sad, but life changing. ... Read more

Ready or not, here she comes! That clever, mischievous, loving matriarch of the nursery knows more verses and ditties than you can shake a stick at.From the familiar "Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater" and "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush" to the more obscure "I'm Dusty Bill from Vinegar Hill," this lovely, good-humored collection of nursery rhymes is sure to find a place on the shelf of classics. 5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it !!!
We bought this book for my son when he was around 15 months old. He would spend hours carrying this book from one person to the next, wanting it to be read over and over. The repetition, the rhyming, and the order of each chapter seemed to just resonate with him.He absolutely loved it and still does.He is almost five years old now and will still take it out of his collection for bedtime reading. It is a little young for his comprehension level now, but he loves to recite the rhymes and finds comfort in its familiarity.I recommend this book wholeheartedly, especially for ages one to three.

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy My Very First Mother Goose instead
Going strictly on my three preschoolers' (ages 5, 3, and 1)preferences, we honestly can't recommend Here Comes Mother Goose. We have spent countless hours reading/singing (and taping and repairing) Opie/Wells' first book, My Very First Mother Goose. But Here Comes M.G. just doesn't resonate with my children in the same way.If you're trying to decide between the two, we whole-heartedly recommend My Very First Mother Goose - a much-loved favorite! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Twisted, Charming, Educational, and Just Plain Fun
Rubber-band mathematics, telekenisis, Moebius strips and Klein bottles, multi-dimensional space-folds, a model of a scientific theory, postulates and relative time frames would not seem to be material suitable for children, but this slim book will quickly disabuse you of that idea. This book is a marvelous re-working of the old Mother Goose rhymes, updated to today's scientifically oriented world.

Editorial Review

First published in 1963, the late Shel Silverstein's children's bookdebut Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back, will resonate with youngreaders much as it did 40 years ago. The affable narrator Uncle Shelby'sstory begins: "Once there was a young lion and his name was--well, Idon't really know what his name was because he lived in the jungle witha lot of other lions and if he did have a name it certainly wasn't aname like Joe or Ernie or anything like that." That all changes, however, when a circus man discovers the lion's skills as a marksman(the lion took a gun from a hunter he ate) and names him Lafcadio theGreat. When the circus man takes Lafcadio to New York City, the storytakes on a certain Crocodile Dundee quality--the lion eats themenu at a fancy restaurant, demands marshmallows (he likes the sound ofthem), and is captivated by the hotel elevator. As Lafcadio becomes morecivilized and rich and famous, however, he becomes more unhappy. In theend, to entertain the increasingly despondent star, the circus man takesLafcadio hunting in Africa where he encounters his old lion friends onthe other end of his gun. Is Lafcadio now a man or is he a lion? Hedecides he is neither and wanders alone into the valley. In typicalSilverstein style, this exuberantly-silly-yet-poignant fable, illustrated with simple, expressive line drawings, asks more questionsthan it answers. The glee the author derives from wordplay and the soundof language is positively contagious. This read-aloud classic belongs onevery child's bookshelf. (Ages 6 to 10) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!
I hadn't heard of this book until a few years ago, when I came upon it and read a few pages in the bookstore.WOW!!! Although I appreciate Shel Silverstein's other stories and poems, nothing at all is like this one. And, that's a disappointment, because after reading this one to my children, we wanted MORE.
5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, captivating and comical...
This book is about a lion named Lafcadio, who learnt to shoot using a gun and began shooting back at hunters - hence the name of the book! The story started when Lafcadio got hold of a hunter's gun and began learning to shoot. He practiced shooting day and night, and he got better and better as the days go by.He is never short of ammunition. To get more ammunition, he just eats up hunters who come into the jungle !!
5-0 out of 5 stars Great read-a-loud book
I discovered this treasure after reading Shel's poetry books to the kids. I read it to them on a long flight across the country and had the people in the seats around me listening in discreetly. It has some great morals and gems in it. About knowing who you are inside and finding your way in this world. And about the absurdity of hunting from the lion's point of view. The kids just love the bit about every lion having their own hunter's rug. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Our nameless hero--a typical Seuss hybrid who's part bear, part puppy, and part beyond categorization--has an innocent, carefree life, until it's ruined by minor problems. With a toe stubbed, and a tail bitten by a Quilligan Quail ("And I learned there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead, and some come from behind"), he sets out on an ill-fated journey to find a better, less troublesome place: the fabled city of Solla Sollew, no less, "on the banks of the beautiful River Wah-Hoo,/ Wherethey never have troubles. At least very few." Like most dreamlands, Solla Sollew is harder to attain than expected--nobody seems to know how to get there, and the journey is far worse than anyone anticipated. When the faircity is finally attained there is, of course, a last straw; but a happy twist suggests troubles may be better faced than escaped. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lesser known, but I think one of his best books - illustrations are fabulous!
I would definitely recommend you buy this book, it is amazing. It has the most whimsically wonderful illustrations, wonderfully catchy text and rhymes and overall a great message for kids.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book-you should take a look
I absolutely love Dr. Seuss, and this book is one that I only first read later in life.I absolutely love it-a story about travelling to the perfect place and when you get there, realizing that the place you really wanted to be was where you came from in the first place.Very very good-I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Meaningful Lesson
Adults and children alike can so relate to the little hero of "I Had Trouble Getting to Solla Sollew":many readers will have had moments of wanting to travel to a kind of paradise like "the city of Solla Sollew / On the banks of the beautiful River Wah-hoo";many readers will relate to the beautiful illustration of the little creature dreaming that he was "sleeping on billowy billows / Of soft silk and satin marshmallow-stuffed pillows." Readers will feel for the struggle fo this protagnoist, a classically illustrated Dr. Seuss creature, who longs to escape his troubles.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must
This book was a staple from my childhood, and1-0 out of 5 stars This book glorifies corporal punishment.
I thought this would be fun to read to (and eventually with) my four year old step-grandchild until I flipped through the pages.Boy, was I wrong! The drawing that accompanies the first poem, "About The Teeth of Sharks" was entirely inappropriate for a young child--better suited for the movie "Jaws."I could have just avoided that page, but then I kept flipping through...hidden at the back of the book were poems that treated corporal punishment as a normal and acceptable way of bringing up a child, for example "How the Frightful Child Grew Better," and "What Do You Think His Daddy Did."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Educator's Opinion
Having taught children of all ages for over thirty years I knew this was a favorite among children and bought it for my granddaughter when she was two.She is now almost eight and we still love to do this rhyme together. The rhyme makes it easy for children to learn and a favorite memory is of her when she couldn't say her L's clapping her hands reciting Miss "Woocy" had a baby .......
5-0 out of 5 stars Sing Song Winner
I remember this song when I jumped rope, and now it has a new meaning for me.This book is one of my daughters' favorite books. The sing-song format and pictures help them remember the words, and they like to 'read' it to each other and anyone who will listen. They think it is silly and fun, but I think it is empowering because they can do it themselves and pure magic!

3-0 out of 5 stars 'The Lady with the Alligator Purse' is fun for children to listen to, memorize, and then recite
"Nadine Bernard Westcott's irresistable adaptation of the favorite nonsense rhyme is now available in a format perfect for little hands," is the starburst quotation on the back cover of the 1998 version of this board book.In general, the quote is slightly superlative, but 'The Lady with the Alligator Purse' is a cute and safe story.

I grew up memorizing and reading Alan Alexander Milne's poetry. While this small book has the same whimsical, childish humor and imagination, I must say my favorite poems are all in the first volume, When We Were Very Young, which has favorites such as "The King's Breakfast" and "James James Morrison Morrison" and "John had great big waterproof boots on".
4-0 out of 5 stars Good From Six to Sixty
This is A.A. Milne's charming work about Winnie and Friends and makes for ideal reading to a 6 year old by his 60 year old grandparent. It's wonderfully illustrated as well.

My aunt gave me this book when I turned 6 years old, and I have since passed it on to my own 6-year old.We recently sat together reading this, and laughing over some of the poems and oh yes, explaining how poetry is different than some of the other books my daughter has read and enjoyed. She's thoroughly enjoyed this book as I did, and I hope she passes this along to her children and so on.These poems are timeless and funny and well worth sharing, they transcend the generation gap for sure! ... "Marvelous Math" is a wonderful way to connectmathematics tocommunication arts. This book of math poetry shows children how math isreadily used in one's daily life. The colorful illustrations help keep thechildren intersted. It has given my students the enthusiasm for trying towrite some poems about math also. This is great for home and also as ateaching tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Easy to understand
I love Edgar Allan Poe, but i found that most of his stories and poems are harder to understand because of the time period. So i bought this book hoping to get the full message...And i did its got slightly bigger print, Vocabulary at the bottom like a school book...In fact this was the version we used in our high school and it was great. It has a nice front cover a crows shadow and a haunted house in a storm its really neat... Poe being a gothic writer makes his writing more dark. He writes about the death and maddness. This great book by Nextext include the following Edgar Allan Poe stories/poems:Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The remarkable foon!
I stumbled on this with my daughter one night and she quickly fell in love with it.
5-0 out of 5 stars the potential in every thing
"If I ran the circus" starts off with a boy and an empty lot. I had a lot similar to this near my childhood home. This book played perfectly into my wild imagination of what one could make out of a seemingly uninteresting place. It made me see things in a different way, the possibility that was in every place and every thing. This book is wonderful. Calm Sneelock is worked into the plan. (Isn't it just typical that kids think of shopkeepers as friends?)This book is a big part of my childhood and now I am happy to share it with my kids to help them see the potential in everything. One just needs to use a bit of imagination -- a lesson for young and old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seuss without the Tang-Tonguelers
If you've wearied of Green Eggs and Ham and Sam-I-Am, and would rather not Hop on Pop, you'll be grateful for this CD set with lively readings of the kid-favorites by familiar voices like Jason Alexander, David Hyde Pierce, and Michael McKean. For young readers, pair them up with the books to follow along and VOILA! Instant Readers! this year is Dr. Seuss's 100th birthday! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars every child should have this
I fell in love with the story and pictures when I was 4. I'm buying it today for my new grandson.
4-0 out of 5 stars You thought you were just going fishing, a classicDr. Seuss takes your imagination on a wild, fun and hair-raising adventure!
A delightful book...one you will enjoy reading and sharing over and over, both children and adults. It is best when read to/with your child, grandchild or someone. A wonderful gift...I gave a copy to my 26 year old "fisherman" son, inscripting "to the most optimistic fisherman I know and love." Dr. Suess does his usual job of making you feel good, light and joyful. Last, but not least, it promises the imagination of any reader will expand and dwell in the happiest expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memory
I grew up on Dr Seuss books, I doubt there is a child alive that at sometime in their lifes as read a Dr Seuss book.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I Ran the Zoo
If I Ran the Zoo is about this little boy who wants to run the zoo.He thinks of animals that will make your imagenation grow!I have read this book and I think its tremendous! This boy is very smart. Some of the animals he thinks of are...Elephantcat,Thinginthebobber,Catdog,and a Goose Bonker. In this book I liked the way he imagened the animals.I didnot like when he took them out of the wild.I enjoyed this book because the boy was curious about being a zookeeper.Find out what happens next...

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist.Not recommended.
I bought this to give to my niece for Christmas but it contains several highly racist bits as the boy travels to different countries to collect animals for his zoo.He goes to Asia where he meets "helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant" (accompanied by WWII propoganda-style caricatures of Asians). When he goes to Africa the animal he captures is held aloft by two tribal Africans illustrated in the typical minstrel show/early 20th century racist exaggerated style. And he goes to Russia to collect a bird "whose headski is redski and belly is blueski."
5-0 out of 5 stars Oh the Possiblities / Dare to Dream
Encourage the dreamer, the visionary within. If I were the boss what I would do, and oh, what a zoo and so much fun too. DO NOT concern yourself with the Chinamen stereotype. It's all a total hoot.Great gift for graduates.Dare to dream. ... Read more
