3-0 out of 5 stars Guns, whiskey and barnyard animals are a questionable mix
I'm really torn on this book. The animals and the format are wonderful. The illustrations are cute. I was surprised when I got four pages into it, and Old Macdonald had a shotgun. Then by the end of the book, he was squeezing the last drop out of his whiskey bottle. I would love to see the publisher update the book and replace these drawings. I'm all for free speech and letting kids read the classics in school and not banning books. I'm just not ready to explain guns and alcoholism to my toddler. I don't know whether to take the book away from her or let her read it and hope she never asks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to teach animals, sounds, and love of reading
We like this book because each page reveals a new animal that was hiding on Old MacDonald's farm. Each page also reveals the noise that animal makes right along with the famous kids' song. The cutouts, hidden animals, escalating noise on the farm, and the farmer's increasing discomfort make for a fun read. At the very end, a whole new slew of animals and noises are presented, just in case you still have breath in you to keep on singing.
5-0 out of 5 stars What fun
My daughter has learned several animal sounds thanks to this book. She loves the bright pictures and the song.We read this one often. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If I Were in Charged of the World
Great book to read aloud to students and to challenge them towrite similar poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can even top that
I was in the second grade when I first found this book, and subsequently read and memorized each poem. Viorst has an astounding ability to incorporate the hightened emotions of childhood with the reality of aging. She can be whimsical and rhythmic as well as dramatic and mornful. I would recommend buying this for any relative, friend, or yourself no matter what age. I still have my very first copy given to me by my grandmother and have yet to go a year without picking it up. Believe me, it is more than it seems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for all ages
I, too, got this book in approximately the third grade -- 17 years ago.I am now teaching middle school literature and share this collection with all of my students; I also have given it as a gift to every person under the sun, no matter what their age!It remains, unquestionably, my favorite collection of poetry, if not for its content, then for its sheer simplicity and "perfection."(If you read it, you'll understand what I mean...)Judith Viorst magically captures the sadness, scariness, uncertainty, and immense joys of childhood and adolescence -- her rhymes are clever, too!As I return to these poems as an adult, I find them as applicable today as they were more than ten years ago.Thank you, Ms. Viorst, for such an wonderful book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A+ for Autumn
I got this book from the library - it is recommended in the book called "Books Children Love" - and I would add it to mine because I like it as much - if not more than - my 3 year old.Totally makes you experience autumn - pure poetry, and that includes the illustrations which are marvelous.

3-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations are not very vivid or saturated.
This is a lovely volume at a very attractive price. However, I was disappointed that the illustrations were not as good as I remember. Perhaps in childhood I had a different edition. The colors look somewhat washed out and, while there are many rhymes, there are not many full page illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime and significant
This is an extremely lavishly illustrated book, with excellent typography, detailed lithograph quality period illustrations, excellent color separation, and wonderful line detail. Many pages of this book are suitable for framing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Beautiful, Always Classic "Mother Goose"!
I recently purchased this book for my new granddaughter and myself. It is beautifully bound in royal purple cloth with gorgeous endpapers and original front page illustrations by Milo Warner. The illustrations throught the book, however, are Blanche Fisher Wright's and they are just as beautiful as the original 1916 ones.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and empowering!
I absolutely LOVE this book.I bought it today for my 8 year old daughter. This book contains the perfect words of encouragement, empowerment and insight that all girls need to hear, again and again.Yet put in a very simple, to the point format. My daughter and I sat down, read this from cover to cover together, and then she just kept reading it and smiling.I even looked over at her once this evening and she was hugging the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars EMPOWERING!!
I bought this book for my ten year old daughter and she finished it in about a day.I then read it to her, with the feeling it demanded. It is a very powerful book that speaks to the heart of girls. It is encouraging, funny, empowering and very, very positive.I plan to buy two more copies and give them to my best friend and sister.Even we adults could use some nurturing to the girl within us.Every girl should have this book and every mother should read it with/to her!!

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL Book!!!!
I gave this book to my 13 year old sister when she started high school this year. This is an EXCELLENT book for adolescent/teen girls, even for adults (I am 25 and absolutely loved this book)! It has great advice & words of wisdom about self esteem, being true to yourself, and having the confidence to reach all your goals & believe in yourself.I would absolutely recommend this book to girls of ALL AGES! I would have given it 10 stars if I could!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Classic
This is a wonderful version of the classic story of the "Three Little Kittens".The artwork in this book is very colorful and detailed and exactly right for young children. My son (just turned 3) loves this book and must request it (we just got it) 6 times a day.The only other thing that he shows this much enthusiasm for is Thomas the Tank Engine.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very appealing and well done little book
My sons have requested this be read to them about 10 times just today! As all of Galdone's fairy tales or nursery rhymes, this is very true to the traditional telling. The special part here is the living, clever anddetailed pictures. They show such neat details as a kitchen with catnip inevery form---chopped, minced, blended, etc---in a spice cabinet! The cats'expressions are priceless---you wouldn't guess cats could be so expressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable depiction of this classic rhyme.
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book!We have taken it out of the library so many times, I have finally decided it is time to own it!I think she identifies with the sweet kittens who get into trouble but then make amendsand get to eat the pie after all. Both toddlers and preschoolers will lovethis beautifully illustrated book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great book, I'd read it again
This boook is full of fun colorful poems. I've only seen the the original copy. The only bad thing about it is the pictures which look very 60s and poorly done. Still I love the poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and poetic
This was one of all time favorite books as a child. It's not a story per say, however, its' value lies in its' ability to teach even the youngest of kids about feelings, emotions and "color" through poetry. Each page dedicates itself to a different color and describes the essences and feelings that those colors evoke in us.It's a very useful teaching tool for young children in the primary grades.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hailstones and Halibut Bones
This was my absolute favorite book when I was in elementary school. Now that I have 2 small children of my own, I have rediscovered it with them. The poems are soothing to hear on a lazy afternoon and the colors are as fresh as watercolor can get. After reading it to the kids, I go back and indulge myself and read it again.Definitely a rainy day pick! ... Mentions all the main characters in Thomas. My son loves having the stories read...and read...and read to him.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice!
Railway Rhymes is a large, colorful board book with "puffy" (padded) covers. What's extra special about this book is the silver edging on this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Illustrated and Fun to Read (or Sing!)
I was fortunate to buy 4 hardback Iza Trapani books through a special offer at my child's school. This is my favorite of the set (the others books are The Itsy Bitsy Spider, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and I'm a Little Teapot, my other favorite). All of these books are just beautifully done.Ms. Trapani takes favorite nursery rhymes and turns them into entertaining stories that just beg to be sung (she even puts the music on the last page in case you don't know the tune). Her exceptional drawings really add to the fun.My 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter absolutely adore these books and they are short enough that I don't mind reading them every night (only Twinkle Twinkle sort of wears me out singing it).Baa Baa also provides a morale to the story centered around not assuming and giving from the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for all ages!
This is a very entertaining version of the old nursery rhyme. My daughter loves this book, and so do we.Its great for traveling, not too heavy like the board books. And its just long enough to keep her attention throughout the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars As charming as they come!
Baa, Baa Black sheep have you any wool? So goes the age old rhymn. But did you know it had verses about dogs, pigs cats and even a horse. Everyone is knocking on black sheeps door but all sheep wants to do is knit, knit, knit. The other animals feel black sheep is not being a good friend and neighbor but are they all too quick to judge their woolly pal? Children and adults alike will smile when they see what black sheep has been up to.THIS is my favorite of Iza Trapani's books. A must have! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our girls LOVE this fairy book
The illustrations are really nice. Beautiful. Our 3 preschool daughers are very into fairies right now and they LOVE this book. They love the stories associated with all the flowers.Part of me would think the book would be a bit old for them, but not at all. They love it and want to read it over and over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enhanced pictures, cute text
My 5-year old enjoyed this introduction to the flower fairy friends. It takes the lovely drawings of Cicely Mary Barker and places them with photographs of flowers, and combines them in different ways. It is neatly done. The text describes the different fairies and what their personalities are like. It is sweet but uninspired. We're looking forward to reading others id the Flower Fairy Friends series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I care
This is delightful tale that I was blessed to discover in the first place, and doubly blessed to rediscover all these years later.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Easy Reader -- Not Much For Storyline
Might be good for an early reader, as many phrases are repetitious; however, my daughter grew bored with the 'story'.Maybe we were expecting too much? Also, the price for a 5" by 4" paperback seemed excessive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent catuionary tale; funny and lively
Not too many children's authors could get away with a story in which a bad little boy is eaten up by a lion, but Sendak handles this potentially unsettling story line with a master's touch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Older Readers, but Not an Ideal Alphabet Book
The format of this book is consistent for each letter of the alphabet. The letter being featured on the page is large and in color. The text length and layout is also consistent page to page. Also, the repeated structure for each letter helps the reader anticipate the same rhythm for each page.
5-0 out of 5 stars A My Name is Alice
I am a Pre-Kindergarten Readiness teacher in my school district for 5 year olds. This book was listed in my Fountas & Pinnell kindergarten phonics text to assist students in learning to read their names in print. I used this story to highlight my students names as we placed them on the word wall in my classroom. I found the text enjoyable and a great learning tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever ABC Book
This is a great ABC book. It is different from the usual format so it really gets kid's imaginations going. As a teacher I love to have a book that expands vocabulary. This book is good as a model for a class book. I also use it as a part of a first grade maps unit. We find all of these interesting places! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cute book
This is not your typical Seuss book - it has 3 stories, all of which teach a little lesson.Once again, Seuss' language can be a little obnoxious so I must warn you there that you'll need to change a few words like "stupid" as you go.That word just doesn't sound too great coming from a two-year-old.Anyway, it shows how you should be careful of what you say before you say it in I can lick 30 tigers (meaning, beat them up and not actually "taste them" as you may think), how you should take care of yourself and not let others tell you what to do in King Louie, and to watch what you think about and how you spend your spare time in Thunk Glunk.Valuable lessons and entertaining as well. Not too big of a favorite in this house, but worth reading once in awhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss makes a series of lessons in a trio of stories
"I Can Lick 30 Tigers Today! and Other Stories" presents a trio of stories told in verse and illustrated by Dr. Seuss in 1969.Each story makes a simple point. The title story is about a young fellow who looks like a smaller version of the Cat in the Hat (there is reason to believe he is part of the next generation) who declares that he can lick thirty tigers today. However, as soon as he see the thirty tigers he starts finding reasons to whittle down that number, which should indicate to young readers the problems of biting off more than you can chew (pick whatever phrase that expresses this idea you like even if it is your eyes are bigger than your stomach).5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Dr. Seuss, you need this book
This is one of the great Dr. Seuss books that a lot of people don't seem to know about.Really, really fun and a little bit different from the others. My nephew cracks up every single time I read it to him. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby loves it ! ! !...
My 3 month old son loves these illistrations by David McPhail. I was surprised to see his intrest in this classy, sophisticated, large hardback. My 7 year daughter old has enjoyed it for years. We also used it as an early reader until it was completely memorized. We loved it even more when her great grandmother (my Mamaw) told us how her mother used to recite this poem to her every night when she was a little girl.Interesting notes about author and poem are inside the paper cover. Great classic poem by Eugene W. Field. Take good care of this beautiful book its a keeper to hand down for generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful poem by Field, and lovely illustrations!
If you are familiar with Eugene Field, this is one of his best children's poems (in my opinion.) The illustrations definitely do justice to the mystical, dreamy poem. I do agree with the review, however, that the mother who is tucking in her daughter looks more like her sister than a mom! Highly recommend this book to for any little one; it's a GREAT bedtime story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wynken, Blynken, & Nod is an enchanting, magical tale
that is as captivating as it is beautiful. It's a wonderful bedtime tradition, for both children and parents. This amazing poem is a timeless classic; there's always something new to discover from the entrancing journey of our trio of fishermen! It's perfect for people of all ages. Comealong, and bring somebody you love on the voyage on Wynken, Blynken, andNod; you won't regret it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much to look at and a captivating rhythm--our son's favorite book!
We've been reading this book to our baby since he was two months old, and he's been enchanted with it since then. He turns the pages and stares at the detailed drawings filled with interesting people and things. We like the rhythm of the text, and it's easy to make up new verses about baby lying under the tree in the backyard or on the changing table. Very well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars This lovely book is so much more than expected!
We picked up a flimsy paperback copy of this book when our eldest was 1 year old, and she loved it literally to pieces. After many tape repairs, we all still enjoyed the charming old-fashioned drawings of everyday life in wartime England, through the eyes of a baby. When we found the board book for our second child, we were very pleased.
5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite!
I read this book to my 21 month old grandson this last week during a visit.I fell in love with it and he seemed to enjoy it verymuch as well.It was the one book he brought to me to read time and again.I love the illustrations...they evoke a time and place I wish were still with us, but, sadly, I don't think we will ever see the likes of war-time England again (or the likes of war-time English people as well as Americans...."What?Us sacrifice?!!!").Anyway, what a lovely, lovely book.I highly recommend it to all. ...
