4-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, it's good
I have no other book to compare it to, but it helps me review for my AP Government class tests. I sometimes wish it had more multiple test questions to offer, but overall the information is well classified and it goes into decent detail on every topic. The sample essays are very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barron's Is God
Barron's has its shortcomings, sure.I'd still give it five stars, because I earned a 4 on the exam after speed-reading the majority of its contents in a single sitting having not taken a class.I will say this much: the answers to the questions on the exam are in this book; the trick is remembering them! Had I studied more rigorously (i.e., for a week), I am sure I would have earned a five.
2-0 out of 5 stars A American Government Book......not a book on AP Government preparation guide
I strongly discourage the purchase or use of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Guide to Social Action
Barbara Lewis cares about kids! Her books highlight ways in which students can make a difference in the world.Students are taught to identify problems and seek creative solutions in order to improve their community. "Kids Guide to Social Action," as well as Barbara's other publications, promote character education and service learning by providing authentic examples and educatinal tools for both the teacher and student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I can't imagine a better way to help young people put their"if only's" into action. Kids can choose from small orlarger time involvements, but this book will help them not WASTE time as they begin helping others in their communities. Many specific ideas and even templates to help the first-time volunteer feel comfortable reaching out, giving, and maybe even changing the world a little.

3-0 out of 5 stars how kids can practice their idealism
This upbeat, engaging book tells young adults --say, 10 and up-- specific ways they can make a difference. Even those vaguely wanting to "do something" may get inspired by the book's stories of caring kids, their ideas, and what skills they developed to get results. My 12-year-oldglued herself to the book for several days, then organized a neighborhoodcampaign to help the homeless in our town. The book helped with ideas forletters, interviews, speeches, surveys, and many resources and contactinfo. Now I'm reading it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't teach the Constitution without it!
Maestro reviews the reasons for the Constitution, but fails to mention the Articles of Confederation. The text includes the Virginia, New Jersey, and Connecticut Plans. The book can easily be read as an introduction to the Constitution in one class period.Students could complete a drawing or group of drawings on a picture web to narrate the important details from the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I came across one book by Betsy Maestro "The Discovery of the Americas" and I loved it.The text is simple and the illustrations are great. It is historically accurate as well, a must in my checklist.I didn't realize she also wrote the historical series "You Wouldn't Want to..." They are my favorite!! I recommend all of her books, especially for teachers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review of Constitution!

4-0 out of 5 stars It might save a child from a life behind bars
It's aimed at junior and senior high school kids to keep them out of gangs. I'm not going to go into my feelings toward this guy or the death penalty or his execution. As far as the merits of this book, I think it might get some kids to think. Williams does a good job of describing prison life. For some kids it might be the smells, others the rules or something simple like never being able to have a soda again. But if he can help one kid stay out of prison he has done something good with his life. Does it make up for the bad? I'll leave that up to God, karma, whatever. It's not for me to decide.
1-0 out of 5 stars A child's book
I guess I should have read the reviews before purchasing this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Glenn's Review
Stanley Tookie Williams is the main character in this book. He is now in prison on San Quentin's Death row because he was found guilty of killing 4 people in 2 robberies. He wrote this book from death row. I believe that if Tookie really was guilty of this heinous crime that he would have confessed to doing this, because he is a real man and as a real man, you do a lot of things differently. Tookie doesn't really change throughout the whole book, but he does talk about redemption.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing
I was given the amazing opportunity to spend time with Virginia Fry while living in Vermont this past winter. My 14 year old sister had recently passed away after her stuggle against cancer. I was completely lost, and met with Virginia several times. She is one of the most amazing people that I've ever been priviledged enough to have come into my life. This book enveloped every part of her ideas and extremely heartfelt suggestions to get you through the most horrible times. She is such an amazing person and this book reflects that to the fullest extent.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Senator And Me: A Dog's Eye View Of Washingion, D.C.
This book is delightful. A very cute book for kids to learn about how the Senate is run. Such a cute idea to use Ted's dog through the dog's eyes and voice. I'm not truly a Ted Kennedy fan, but this was very well written, and the illustrations are excellent. I hope he does a second book using both of his dogs. Children will love reading it, as well as adults. I buy them for my grand children and end up keeping some myself for my own collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars kids at work
This is a nonfiction photographic essay book that will touch any reader's heart. Mr. Freedman seems to know the facts and life of Mr. Hine very well. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book as wee. The information at the end seemed hard to believe but true. The book is only 11 years old so the facts aren't that dated. There are many saddening facts in this book. It reveals the truths about child labor in the text and photos.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hate school? Your life could be so much worse...
Freedman has collected dozens of black and white photographs taken by Lewis Hine during the first decades of the twentieth century. Hine worked as an investigational photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The NCLC wanted the United States government to pass laws concerning child labor, and thought that photos of the work children did would be more effective persuaders than mere speeches and statistics. Hine traveled the nation with his camera taking photographs, sometimes despite risk to his person.5-0 out of 5 stars The meaning of tough

5-0 out of 5 stars FREEDOM RULES OR RULES FOR FREEDOM
As a librarian, I recommend this book for everyone from 5 to 105. All right, this is actually a picture book that depicts some wonderful insights into our freedom and basic tenets of this great nation from a child's viewpoint. The hilarious illustrations by David Catrow will delight readers of all ages and will be fun for those who are not even studying the Constitution. For those students who are studying the Constitution, this book would be a great visual aid to memorizing the Preamble. I have not met a teenager who didn't enjoy a quick read in a great children's picture book. Teachers: Why not reduce your stressed out students and let them begin their studies with this light-hearted look into some very serious words? Buy a couple of copies and circulate them through the class. Everyone will love them. For the younger reader, ESL or special ed student there is one page explaining the basic meaning of these words and another page and a half explaining why anyone bothered to write the Constitution of the United States. It's ALL GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Super discussion starter!
This fun book helped me to reach my fifth grade class in a way their social studies text never would have!Catrow finds a way to take the elegant (and sometimes difficult to translate into kid-talk) language of the Preamble and not only make it simeple to understand, but really helps put the kids right in there. 3-0 out of 5 stars Illustrations are fabulous, content should be more kid-friendly
The illustrations in this book are very colorful and lively. I liked that each page had a different illustrator, so there is a good variety of visual attraction. However, the language could be simplified so that the content is more appealing to the average young child. As it is, the language seems more geared to an adult audience.

Why is it that outside Savage and Coulter it is the lefties among us that use the most intemperate language. The absurdity of an anti-semite calling a reasoned intelligent woman like Ms. Cheney a Nazi is laughable. Take a look in the mirror pal

5-0 out of 5 stars YIPPIE-SKIPPIE, Mrs. Cheney!
With patriotic colors of red and blue, symbolic frames and borders full of educational themed graphics of brotherhood, victories and celebrations, the pages of this book BURST with motion "from sea to shining sea".Each page softly depicts the heart-felt words of freedom, equality, constitution, declaration, patriotism, rights, valor and heroes. The modernized historical quotations such as "The noblest question in the world is: What good may I do in it?" from Benjamin Franklin is most encouraging for children who are looking for 'action' around every corner... and what child isn't?My favorite page is "Y... is for YOU and all you will be in this greatest of countries, the land of the free."What a lovely way to connect America's children with their country at an early age while providing a foundational glimpse of the development of America's backbone.YIPPIE-SKIPPIE, Mrs. Cheney... way to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Homeschooling
We used this textbook with the accompanying teacher's guide and student activity book for a home school high school American Government class this past school year. This text was easy to understand, dealt with the most essential information, was very interesting and held the interest of the students. None of them ever complained the text was boring or unpleasant. The activities book provided good ideas for additional expanded projects and research. I think all the kid's had great fun and I sure learned an incredible amount teaching this class and using this resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars point of view from a student...
As a student, I really enjoyed how this book is very detailed, yet to the point, and also the lightness and small size of it. I learned a lot from it, and didn't have a boring time at it either.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
American Government: A Complete Coursebook is a great resource book.I know, as a student, that you can find a lot of topics in this book that aren't even touched upon in any ordinary textbook. This is a wonderful resource, especially for Economic, Legal, and Political Systems (ELPS) students, and U.S. History students. From the definition of "bill", to 105+ Supreme Court cases, this book has found almost all of the information I have needed.Maybe, it will work for you or your student too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely imperative if you are a woman
I consider myself quite well informed about current women's issues, but had always wondered what the impetus was behind Title IX. I had no idea that the law we hear about that applies to women's equal access to sports, was aimed at equal access to college admissions and financial assistance.I cried several time while reading this book; I was mad at the earlier treatment of women, I was saddened by the personal stories of disappointment suffered by the women who were shut out of playing games they loved only because they were girls.I was also proud of the triumphs of the recent past, but mostly I was moved to buy another copy and pass it around to as many women as I can.ANY WOMAN WHO HAS PLAYED SPORTS OR GONE TO COLLEGE IN THE LAST 30 YEARS, OWES IT TO THEMSELVES TO READ, APPRECIATE, AND SHARE THIS BOOK WITH THE NEXT GENERATION OF GIRLS.Laurie in Utah

5-0 out of 5 stars Linking women's equality to Title IX
Let Me Play puts a passionate perspective on the plight of women in the fight to obtain simple civil liberties and human equalities. Author Karen Blumenthal presents her work in a format targeted to a young audience, making this easily manageable book appealing to people of all ages that appreciate the continuing battle for equal rights.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much-needed history for today's young women
I'm so glad to see a history for today's young women about what it was like before Title 9 - which, while it wasn't that long ago, seems unreal to my daughter's generation. I remember The Days Before, when the boys got the gym and were formed into athletic teams while the girls got WHAT PASSED for PE - calisthenics in the cafeteria! (and instructional time was used to move the tables and chairs aside)
