5-0 out of 5 stars Full of adventure and fun-filled confusion
First published in French in 1943 as The Secret of the Unicorn (Le Secret de la Licorne. Meanwhile Tinin sees a curious model ship and decides to buy it for his friend , Captain Haddock , after which he is pestered by dealers to sell it to them.
3-0 out of 5 stars "Now why were they both so keen to buy my ship?"
The Secret of the Unicorn - La Mystere de La Licorne, or the Mystery of the Unicorn, in the original French - is the eleventh installment in the Tintin series. It was also evidently the personal favorite of author Herge. 5-0 out of 5 stars A nautical treasure hunt
Tintin purchases a model ship at an antiques market.Just after he purchases it two strangers arrive who want to buy the ship.Tintin won't sell it to them even though they offer him ten times what he paid for it.It is a gift for his friend Captain Haddock. The captain is amazed to get the model ship.He shows Tintin a painting of his ancestor, a captain. The captain's ship is visible in the background, and is identical to the model Tintin purchased. The secret to buried treasure is somehow hidden in the model ship, but other parties are also after it...

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss let's somebody else draw his book on "Up"
"Great Day for Up" is a unique Dr. Seuss book and you can tell this just by looking at the cover. That is because while the book is written by Dr. Seuss it features the jolly drawings of the English artist Quentin Blake.Until this point every time I have read a book written by Dr. Seuss it was also illustrated by Dr. Seuss and when somebody else did the drawings Dr. Seuss used the name Theo. LeSieg (which is "Geisel" backwards). So the fact that this is a real "Dr. Seuss" book drawn by somebody else is pretty special.4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning readers.
Ya, ya, ya so this book teaches about the meanings of the word "up".But, to me that takes a backseat to the fun rhythm and rhymes that make a child WANT to be able to read the book by themselves. The small vocabulary, phonetically spelled words and visual clues are wonderful for early readers. My step-son enjoys reading this book together at bedtime and can actually read it to US now.I love the "bright and early" books from Dr. Seuss for building early reading skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great day for up
The book was about everyone waking up, getting outside, and having fun. All the characters interacted together, the played outside, and everyone made new friends. I enjoyed reading this book, just he way Dr. Seuss wrote it makes you want to keep reading it. It kept me entertained even though I'm not a little kid. Children between the ages of 4-8 will love this book. It teaches kids to wake up, get out and play, and just have fun; instead of just wasting their time inside doing nothing and watching T.V. If the kids couldn't read then this would be a good book to help them out with because there's not a lot of writing and the words are easy. I loved the ending of the book but you'll have to read it to find out!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Katy's favorites
My 3 year old daughter Katy loves the Curious George books. She particularly like this one and wants to read it almost every night. As an aside, the book has taught Katy about the presidents on Mt. Rushmore and she wants to go to South Dakota to see them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious George Strikes Again
Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon is another charming example of the magic Margret and H.A. Rey weave. Children will find this book enchanting. They will identify with George's curiousity, which causes trouble, andcheer when he saves the day.I enjoyed the delightful pictures.I alsoappreciated the simple, straighforward language and easy-to-follow storydevelopment.Fans of Curious George will love this story;thoseunfamiliar with his books will become fans. ... Editorial Review

Poor Miss Clavel! In "an old house in Paris that was covered withvines," Miss Clavel oversees the education of 12 little girls, the littlest of whom isthe mischievous Madeline. Despite her size, she fearlessly pooh-poohs the tiger in thezoo and frightens Miss Clavel with her adventurous antics. When she awakens the entirehouse with her plaintive cries in the middle of the night, Doctor Cohn whisks theappendicitis-stricken Madeline off to the hospital where, some two hours later, sheawakens to find a scar on her stomach! The scar (not to mention the flowers, toys, andcandy given to Madeline by her father) proves quite interesting to the rest of MissClavel's charges when they make a special trip to visit her. Ludwig Bemelmans's liltingrhymes are music to children's ears, and the quirky, oddly perfect drawings of the girls in"two straight lines" lend an enticing Parisian flavor to this perennialchildren's favorite. 5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I am not a fan of France, nor of Madeline, but this book was given as a gift and I have to say my daughter begs for it and I enjoy it more than I thought. In fact, I am even going to purchase more Madeline books. My only quibble is that the rhyming is often a bit off but to be honest, I think that makes the book more enjoyable and more reflective of the time in which it was actually written. It is a classic after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ludwig Bemelmans introduces little Madeline to the world
I have had several occasions to read "Madeline" over the years, yet had never read anything about her.So learning that she had celebrated her 60th birthday was something of a surprise because I did not think of this first story of that irrepressible little girl as something that was first published on the eve of World War II.But the bigger surprise was learning that "Madeline" was not originally written and published in France, which I had always assumed was the case. That means all of those times I was reading this book and wondering what it would read like in the orignal French, I was completely off the mark.Live and learn.
5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Loves Madeline
Madeline is the story of a fearless little girl lucky enough to grow up in Paris, France. She lives with 11 other girls in "an old house...covered in vines", and she has a wonderful time scaring her care-giver, Miss Clavel. In the middle of the night, Madeline is rushed out of the old house and to a hospital, frightening her housemates but she somehow manages to make them jealous of her stay there. The book is easy to follow and the pictures are clear - they're all VERY yellow, but are detailed and help tell the story. A classic everyone should read at least once.I would think anyone between kindergarten and maybe fourth grade would enjoy the story, with the two older grades able to read it themselves in addition to having it read to them. ... Editorial Review

Richard Scarry's bright and humorous animal characters have been charming children for decades. Always inventive in the world of animal fashion, Scarry shows the cow jumping over the moon in pearls and a pink dress, and the little dog who "laughed to see such sport" sports a sailor suit. You won't hear "I can't see the pictures!" with this book; its large size makes it a good choice for group story hour. This collection of 50 Mother Goose rhymes is especially appropriate for toddlers; most of the two-page spreads contain only one illustrated rhyme. (Many children younger than three can focus better on one simple verse than on many rhymes on each page.) Read more

Editorial Review

Gaily tied up with two red ribbons, Lucy Cousins's unusual, delightful, virtually wordless "book" is in fact a triple pop-up. When you open the covers (vertically, like a door, rather than horizontally), you are introduced to this endearing rodent's kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, like three little dollhouses. In the boldly colorful kitchen is a pop-up table and chairs, and a pop-out-from-the-wall set of cabinets, complete with a range that opens to reveal a baking pie, and many other distractions. Turn the "page" and you come to a bathroom complete with a mirror on the wall, a liftable toilet seat, and a little figure of Maisy to stand in the shower stall. Each room comes with a sheet containing cut-out objects like clothing and small furnishings, to be arranged at will. In the bedroom, a tab turns a window scene from day to night and back again, and a clothes chest has real sliding drawers. Maisy is a character small children can fall in love with. Ingenious. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maisy's Big Flap Book
Allthe children I work with love this book(pre-school age). They are engaged for extended periods of time in pretend play. Also a wonderful educational tool in which to elicit important vocabulary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
I bought this because my daughter LOVES Maisy.I thought she was too young for it (2 years old), but one rainy day I pulled it out because I was deperate for something to do.She loved it immediately and played with it for hours! My only suggestion is to laminate or tape up (with clear packing tape) the Maisy and Panda since they get worn out very easily.I know Maisy's arms don't move then, but my daughter didn't seem to mind.Otherwise, this will provide hours of fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I purchased this book and the Maisy Farm book to take on vacation with us. They traveled well and when we opened the book we loved the playhouse. My 3 year old laughed with joy when she say Maisy and all the wonderful things in her house. Best yet - when we left vacation we folded the book and packed it. This is one of her favorite toys now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute best fun family entertainment
If you still like to read as a family and have kids in the middle to low elementary grades, this is the book for you.The characters are fun and the observations that the Director of Ranch Security, Hank the Cowdog, make are amazingly right on, given HIS perspective on life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Mutt Who Steals Your Heart
He's homely, he's not too bright, and he loves to boss around his pal, Drover. But as brilliantly portrayed by writer/narrator John R. Erickson, Hank the Cowdog is also loyal, brave, and downright hilarious. This first story in a series of several dozen, 'The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog' introduces us to Hank, and it isn't long before you get the impression that Mr. Erickson is a keen observer of dogs. Hank's misadventures will have not just the kids laughing, but the adults in your family as well. At one point, my sons owned a few dozen Hank the Cowdog cassettes and we spent many an hour listening along with them at Hank's antics. But along with all that laughter, we were always pleased at the subtle moral values the stories teach. So pull up a chair and listen along as John Erickson takes you into the 'tight circle' of Hanks' world. This is a 'can't miss' selection for children of all ages. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hank the Cowdog vs Harry Potter... hmmmmmmmm.

When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gableswith a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy.We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can'timagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not forthe original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne"confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes ofbeing allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hatedcarrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, nohouse that Anne's in will ever be dull." Anne has a very large scope of imagination- sometimes you might not understand her queer ways. Anne is very funny, and I hihly reccomend it for any age. If you want to know why Anne wants her name spelled with an 'e' on the end ane gets very mad when her teacher spells it Ann, read the book!

Cinderella is a children's classic romantic story that is timeless. The story has been adapted for various movies. I read the story decades ago when I was a kid. It was only recently when I was looking for a present for my five years old daughter that I bought the book and went through it again with her. We also saw the excellent video that complemented the beautiful story in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic.
It is a good book. It shows their are consequences for rude behavior. Not even Papa Bear is excluded. Mama Bear is right in her rules of being polite, but so is Papa Bear in sometimes people have to interrupt, etc. I give it four stars overall.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for manners
We love this book in our house. It teaches what happens when a home runs amuck with bad manners. Shoving, name calling, blaming, throwing food, you name it, the bears have it and mama is tired of it.So, she puts together the bear family manners plan and if they forget them, then they have certain chores they have to do as reminders. Now, I agree with the other reviewer that chores as a punishment isn't exactly the best approach, but when they're chores that normally are not pleasant (such as cleaning up after an animal's waste) and have to be divided equally, then I can see the punishment factor coming into play there as being appropriate.I've emptied cat boxes most of my life and I still don't enjoy doing it so I can see that as being an effective punishment for bad manners.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
The world lost a real gem of a writer when Stan Berenstain passed on November 29.Together, Berenstain and his wife, Jan, and eventually their two sons, created books featuring lovable but flawed characters who tackle just about every real issue that faces families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both newcomers and old fans of the series will appreciate.
Peter has just won a contest: the prize is a school visit from his idol and the author of the FleshCrawlers series. While Peter's excited, Chester the cat is suspicious: Graves dresses in black, has a silent black crow about him at all times, and Chester knows that in each of Graves' popular books, something bad always happens to the pet... humor again blends with the supernatural in a Bunnicula story both newcomers and old fans of the series will appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bun of Darkness is Back...
Its been twenty seven years since Bunnicula first hopped from the minds and pages of Deborah and James Howe's Bunnicula: A Rabbit- Tale of Mystery and into the popular lexicon. Merely mention the name Bunnicula to any thirty- something and you are bound to get a smile and a laugh as memories of Chester, Harold, Howie and the Bun of Darkness come flooding back. Finally, the rabbit with a V8 addiction is back; every bit as delightful as he was when he first appeared in 1979, and just in time for us to introduce him to our own children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too hard!!
The mysteries are cool. ( This is why I gave it 2 stars.) There are ten of them in the book. When you are done reading the mysteries they ask you how Encyclopedia Brown figured it out. You can never figure them out. They don't give you enough info. This makes it not very fun! Don't try the other books. They all have the same problem. Just don't waste your money. ( I gave the one star for trying.)

4-0 out of 5 stars they're tough and fun to read.
They're tough and fun to read. I like black jack's treasure. It's about black jack's treasure and a tree with a mark on it. It's also about this kid named Wilford Wiggins. He tries to fool kids too.

5-0 out of 5 stars We really love your book.We enjoy mysteries.
We liked all the details in your story. We liked how you had a Disgusting Sneaker Contest. We would like to try this at our school. Thanks for such a neat book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tintin inEngland and Scotland
Tintin comes across a plane making an emergency landing. When he go's to investigate , he is shot at by the pilot. In hospital he is visited by the Thompson twins who inform him that they will be travelling to England to investigate a similar plane crash in Sussex.
4-0 out of 5 stars L'ile Noire (The Black Island)
The Black Island is the seventh story in the Adventures of Tintin series, and one of the most beautiful to look at.It differs greatly in appearance from its immediate predecessor, The Broken Ear, bearing much more of a resemblance to the later tales. This is due to Herge's redoing the artwork and story long after its original incarnation (as a serial in the French children's magazine, Le Petit Vingtieme).
5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin chases counterfeiters through the British Isles
While on a walk in the countryside Tintin sees a small plane make an emergency landing in a field. When he approaches the pilot to offer help he is shot at.Later he returns to investigate and follows a trail of counterfeit money to Scottland.Tintin is suspicious about what is going on on the Black Island.Natives say that a monster lives on the island and that those who travel there never come back. But Tintin must investigate...

The haughty ruler of Didd, King Derwin (who would foolishly go on to summon green goo from the sky in his later years) showed the first signs of his silly self-importance back in this 1938 Seuss classic, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I cannot stand this book!
I LOVE Dr. Suess.Really.We have lots of his books and I enjoy reading all of them to my kids with the exception of this one.It annoys me to no end. That's just it...it seems like there is no end. It's not rhymie or sing-songy like his others. It's just repetitive and boring and ..... oh just YUCK!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Seuss Classic
Dr. Seuss's second book was a childhood staple of mine. If one believes in the destiny of early influences then this book might just be responsible for my entry into the hat business. This great, lesser known Suess story, addresses the fact that the hat has historically served to establish the individual's rank in society and that relationship to the origins of hat etiquitte.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can Bartholomew Remove His Hat?

5-0 out of 5 stars An Escape From the Real World -- (written by my sister).
This book is good for kids and adults. It is a great way to escape from the daily depressions in our world news. Unlike other books, it provides a fun, innocent adventure that still has the appeal to people of all ages. After a hard day, this book allows you to forget all bad - there is no evil, there is no wrong. highly recommended!
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated in color and black & white by E.H. Shepard
The World of Pooh is better read aloud.Milne's characters are charming and lovable.Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends are alive in this book every time I read it, and Shepard's illustrations are so pleasing.I've read these stories so many times and still each time I can hardly wait to find out what adventures Pooh and his friends will have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults. Because it's *that* sort of book.
I first read Pooh as a child, when my days were spent doing Nothing. It was a good book then, which I really enjoyed.Read more
