Editorial Review

"When I was quite young and quite small for my size, I met an old man in the Desert of Drize." The old man looks like a cross between a cartoon granddad and a swami; he sits on top of a cactus, and tells his young listener that the best way to get over any sadness is to imagine all the ways you could be worse off. "Suppose, just suppose, you were poor Herbie Hart, who has taken his Throm-dim-bu-lator apart!"This has a more hurried, formulaic feel than the best Seuss, and it seems to showcase a less acute grasp of child psychology than usual. (Does it really make a child feel better to think of poor Harry Haddow, who, "try as he will, can't make a shadow," or Gucky Gown, "who lives by himself ninety miles out of town"?) But the illustrations alone make this morality tale a minor classic. (Ages 4 to 8) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple genius
The moral of "Did I Ever..." is as much for the adults reading the story as for the kids who're enjoying it as part of a bedtime ritual.Dr. Seuss paints a picture of silly places and people we're lucky we're not, adjusting our point of view to show that we've got it pretty darn good.Probably not a lesson that a 2 year-old will immediately grasp and write a masters thesis on, but a good seed to plant in his mind. And while the deep meanings of life are flying over their heads, the rugrats will enjoy the brilliant Seuss-ian rhymes and illustrations of ridiculous situations (With your bedroom up here... And your bathroom up there!).Definitely a top-ten book for small human people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are
This was, by far, my favorite book growing up.I loved trying to figure out how to say the strange words and eventually, I could almost recite the entire book from memory.I still can the first few pages.I don't know that I was helped psycologically, but it sure was and is a fun book!

5-0 out of 5 stars and you think YOU have it bad...!!
Theodore Seuss Guisel is, of course, one of the best known children's authors today.Though he left us in 1994, his legacy lives on and his books are still produced, bought and loved as much now as anytime in the past. When we think of him, we immediately think of "The Cat in the Hat" or "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", but we can easily forget some of his wonderful, lesser-known works. "When I was quite young and quite small for my size I met an old man in the Desert of Drize..." So begins "Did I Ever Tell You..." where the narrator finds an old man sitting atop a prickly cactus in the middle of the desert. The man tells the boy narrator that whenever HE feels like his life isn't going well, he reminds himself how lucky he really IS.He could be, for example, a construction worker on the impossibly rickety Bunglebung Bridge, where workers are toiling over the water to finish the impossibly crooked structure. Yes, things could be far worse!!You could be a Poogle-Horn Player who has to honk away on your complex, tuba-like Poogle-Horn while descending a flight of stairs... on a two story unicycle, no less!!The absurdness of people less fortunate splash across each page, Seuss-like, as Mr. Bix wakes up at 6 in the morning to find that his Borfin has schlumpped over, or Mr. Potter who has to dot i's and cross t's on endless, miles-long spools of paper!Yes, things could be far worse than they are, Ducky, so count yourself lucky! Published in 1973, "Have I Ever Told You..." is a wonderfully funny book with some subtle messages.Written during a period of time when parents were still forever admonishing their children, "you're so lucky to be able to eat those Brussels sprouts!!Why, there's children starving in Africa..." the book can be seen as a lesson in morality and thankfulness OR as satire of those very parents who encourage children to think of those less fortunate than them when they crank about life's inequities. Satire or morality play, "Have I Ever Told You..." is classical Seuss at his best. The illustrations are properly absurd and colorful, splashing across the page in Seuss's perennial style. There's humans assembling bridges as well as odd creatures getting stuck in 4-way traffic jams. The illustrations are uncluttered and the text is easy to read, making it an excellent choice for beginning to intermediate readers.A wonderfully fun book, and highly recommended!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended autobiography
Chinese Cinderella is a heart-wrenching and sorrowful tale of a young girl growing up in a classic Cinderella setting. Treated harshly by her step-mother and ignored by her father, Adeline's life seems doomed to perpetual sadness. Every time something arrives to lighten up her life, it is taken away from her. She has to deal with loneliness and despair, but throughout the story she never gives up hope, that someday, somehow, things will get better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read!!!
I first read this book when I was in the 3rd grade. It was a fantastic true story (I'm mostly all about fantasy) that I enjoyed reading. I have read that book at least once a year every year since it was published. Each time I'm drawn into her world and remember how blessed my life is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great memoir
Adeline theoretically should have everything she wants in life- her father is very wealthy, she is able to attend prestigious college schools and afford an education, and she is extremely intelligent, remaining at the top of her class through the years of her youth. While she presents the fa?ade of having a happy family life, however, she is the despised child of a large family. Her mother passed away as a result of her birth, causing her father and four older siblings to blame her for their mother's death, considering her unlucky and barely a member of the family. When Adeline's father remarries, life continues to deteriorate- she, as well as the rest of her siblings, are scorned by their step-mother, who favors her own two children highly.Adeline struggles first to find acceptance in her family, and later to at least escape her family by putting her brilliant mind to work, immersing herself in her schoolwork so she will one day be able to support herself and her aunt, who is her only faithful friend.

This book is a blast (no pun intended)! Mrs. Frizzle and her class travel to every planet in the solar system. The bus breaks down in the asteroid belt and the students have to find Mrs. Frizzle on a very cold planet. You'll love all the colorful pictures and Arnold's crazy cousin!Blast-off to this book and learn a lot about space in a fun way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Solar System
I like this book because it makes me wonder about the solar system and everything happening in it. I love imagining what things are like in other places and this book makes me think but it also taught me stuff about the solar system too. This book makes me want to visit the solar system myself.

Yet more wisdom cast down from high atop Mt. Seuss, this cheerful trio of tales teaches some valuable lessons in humility--thanks to a sharp-eyed worm, a bragging bear and rabbit, a fuzzy-tailed bird, and a couple hundred turtles led by their foolish King Yertle.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing...
I bought this book for my 21 month old as she loves so many of the Dr. Suess books. We didn't even get through the first couple of pages before she was bored with the story and illustrations.Maybe she'll like it better in a few years, but for now it is just sitting on the shelf...

4-0 out of 5 stars A story with a twist
My family have been happy fans of Dr Seuss and we enjoyed this book, it's quite funny because as a adult reading this to your children, you can't help but think that there is a message in the story aimed at the adults !!!! That's the way I saw it anyway !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Satire
Greed. Abuse of Power. The king of the pond will literally step on others to get what he wants. Until a plain little turtle below in the stack, his name is Mac, precipitates change.Great introduction to satire, pokes fun at human shortcoming.Dr. Seuss rhythm and rhyme. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete guide
This guide has the basic walkthrough up to the Elite Four. But as other reviewers have noted, the book is rife with small errors and stops abruptly when detailing the end of the game. The largest omission is the exclusion of -any- mention of how to recieve the National Pokedex or how to travel to Islands 4, 5, 6, and 7. This is not a small extra area of the game, it is several more hours of gameplay and isn't even mentioned. Pokemon completists will be dissapointed with Prima's guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Helping Little Ones (and Their Parents) Grow Sleepy
I used this book a lot when my own kids were small. It would usually have me yawning within the first couple of pages. It is highly suggestive and has a hypnotic effect on both the reader and the listener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Seuss!
If you only get one Dr. Seuss book to read to your child, get this one! Not only has it been helping get children to sleep for generations, it is does not have the tongue-twisting rhymes that make some of his books a challenge to read aloud. Instead, The Sleep Book puts both parent and child into the mood to sleep, peacefully dreaming of Dr. Suess creatures who are also going to sleep, so how about you?

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Dr. Seuss Book Ever!! By Laura G.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read Aloud for Toddlers/Kinders and A Great Reading for Young Children
I first learned about this book while teaching second grade. It was one of our chapter books for group reading. My second grade students couldn't get enough of this wonderful classic and enjoyed reading it each day. They also voted it as the favorite chapter book that they read all year. Now as a parent I purchased it as a read aloud bedtime story for my three year old that has developed a love of dragons. It is a timeless story full of adventure and imagination! The chapters are short, making it a great bedtime story to be read over multiple nights.A must for every family library!Parents will enjoy it as well as children. It is a story that once you finish your child will ask, "Can we read it again?"

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful, imaginative
My five-year-old son loves this book. The first time, I read it out loud to him and his sister. He has read it alone several times since then.I think the writing is right on his level - he has tackled tougher books but not gone back to them like this one - and it is long enough that he doesn't finish it in fifteen minutes. The story sounds to me just like something a kid would think of - for example, how Elmer crossed the river full of crocodiles.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely this book.It is about a young boy, Elmer Elevator, and a dragon, Boris, who go on a lot of adventures.I read it five years ago, when I was seven, and it is great for kids ages 7-10 to read alone.Younger kids would enjoy it too if someone read it out loud to them.Makes a great b-day or Christmas present!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My children are enchanted, amused and QUIET!
I purchased this CD prior to a family roadtrip last spring, having no prior exposure to Arnold Lobel, or Frog & Toad. My 6-year old son and 4-year old daughter were quick converts. They easily follow the stories, laugh at the absurdities of the characters' sweet friendship. They constantly requested it to be played in the car whenever we were out and about. Since then, we have also purchased "Mouse Tales" on CD, which they also adore. Intelligent, engaging, & fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars the beginning of a beautiful friendship.....
this book came out in 1970......it truly showed me what a really great childrens book should be.......the five stories are about friendship as it should be in real life but it's not......this will truly enlighten anyone who reads it...adult or child.......

4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing
This is a very sweet book. Some of the stories seem to not have point at the end, but that's probably because I'm looking at them from an adult female point of view.Other stories are endearing.A sweet, sweet book that teaches what it is to be a good friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The simple but true-to-human-life stories and the drawings are a delight.
It's so wonderful to have a book that a very young child can read himself, and then ask the adult, or other reader, with whom he is sitting, for help with difficult words. When I was a kid, 65 years ago, we only read the simplest of books, with no real relationships, because we were expected to read them without help. Frog and Toad have it all over Dick and Jane!

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!!!
This books deals great with strangers. It also shows not to judge a person by the outside. The only thing it needs is to tell kids what to do if a stranger does capture them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I think this was the perfect book to teach my son about strangers.I tried to introduce the idea to him myself, but I couldn't explain what a stranger was without scaring him.He already likes the Berenstein Bears so this put a tough subject on his level and did a great job explaining the differences in strangers.I would recommend this book to everyone with a young child and I will be purchasing more copies for my nephews as well.

My husband and I grew up on Babar. So when we saw this book we bought for our 4 month old son.He loves to hear our voices as we read to him and he also loves the bright colored pictures. We enjoy the memories that the stories bring back to us.A great addition to anyones collection.3-0 out of 5 stars "Original" art?Ha!
I was so thrilled to get this book as a gift, especially since it includes the long out-of-print "Babar and Zephir."When I began to leaf through it, being very familiar with the older editions, I grew sicker with every page.Jean de Brunhoff's stunning artwork has been absolutely destroyed.5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT CHILDREN'S BOOK!
We have a3 year old and a 2 year old and they both really love Babar and the gang. They love the book and Babar videos. We've had this book for over a year, and our children continue to ask us to read it to them. This book is wonderfully illustrated and humorous.Enjoyable even for adults. ... Editorial Review

This collection of five complete, illustrated Dr. Seuss classics is a "hatful," but you'd have to have a Cat-in-the-Hat-sized chapeau to contain all the treasures in this hefty book. Within its pages you'll find Theodor Seuss Geisel's exuberant creations Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Seuss
Typically wonderful Seuss.A collection of favorites which still entertain and delight childern of all ages!Told in the whimsical, melodic, rhyming style that is Seuss' alone these stories present the challenges and triumph of basic human goodness that we want our children to learn.I highly recommend this collection.I read them to my grandson and notice that by the end of a story the whole house has tuned in and is anxiously awaiting that heart tickling sensation that comes at the conclusion of every Suess tale.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good buy, but Six by Seuss is better
Two of the books collected here are classics (Sleep Book and The Sneetches) and the other three are also pretty good, so this is well worth buying. The now out-of-print "Six by Seuss" however, is an even better value, since it includes five of his very best stories (Yertle, Mulberry Street, the Grinch, the Lorax, and Horton Hatches the Egg) under one cover.I would recommend looking for that book first, then getting this if your child turns out to be a hardcore Seuss fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best of Dr. Seuss
Here's a rare book that gives you more than it promises. While it's titled "Five Favorite Dr. Seuss Stories," you actually get EIGHT stories. That's because there's three extra ones ("The Zax," "Too Many Daves," and "What Was I Scared Of?") included with "The Sneetches and Other Stories."

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the lesser Dr. Seuss books
I'm a huge Dr. Seuss fan -- he taught me to read -- but this is, in all honesty, not one of his better books. The message is great (reading, yay!) but the delivery is weak. The artwork and the text are both a bit flat, and he seems to be straining to emulate the vibrant wackiness of his earlier work. There's nothing "wrong" with this book, but you may find yourself reading it, wondering why it just isn't as fun as it ought to be.It's okay, but there are better books out there, including a LOT of great ones he's written.

3-0 out of 5 stars Against the go to sleep club
I'm way too old for beginner books but I read "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" anyway. It's good for young readers, but against the go to sleep club. It focuses on "Keep your eyes open so you can READ!" soooo much that it fights going to sleep. And what sense does "Reading with my eyes shut is bad for my hat and makes my eyebrows red hot!" make? They should say it's bad for your eyes but no, they say it's bad for your eyebrows and hat. And it would be terrible for Russian Blue Witch because she LOVES books toooooo much to pay attention to the world around her and help people. It would be better teaching going to sleep because I never let my sisters sleep, chattering stories all night. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty cute book
This book is probably good if you have a young reader wanting to read a simple book. But if you're reading it to a child before bedtime, it doesn't really tell much of a story. I know that sounds weird, but it just kinda gets annoying after awhile to some children and it doesn't really spark too much imagination. Yes, it does create conversation about why the cat goes through trying to read with his eyes shut, but really, it just isn't all that much fun for a child to read.I'd try something else first like Go Dog Go, or just check this one out of the library first before buying it. You may like it but my family didn't. It just was boring to them. They couldn't wait until I put it down and picked up another book! ... Read more

I personally think these novels are some of the best ever. They are filled with action packed adventures. They keep you flying through the pages to find the answers to the mysteries. They even keep you laughing at the Hardy Boy's friend Chet Morton and his jalopy. These are MUST read action packed novels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite children's book to read aloud!
This book captures literary genius in the form of childish tongue twisters. It proves to be an excellent practice of diction and reading rhythm while providing extreme entertainment for the little listener. The love of words is the beginning of all great literary accomplishment, and this child's book is a step in the right direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh, Say I Can't Say
This book was one of my husbands favorites when he was growing up, and now that we are expecting a child he wanted our son to have the same experience. He was so excited when it arrived that he read it to me as a bedtime story. The riddles start out easy, but by the end of the book your tongue is so twisted it's hard to say anything!!It's a lot of fun and we really look forward to hearing our son try to say these riddles when he learns to speak.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book!
This is a really fun book to read. However, you REALLY have to pay attention to the words or you will mess them up.If you love tongue twisters, this is the book for you.It also is great for young readers, but they may become frustrated with some of the words. It's fun for little ones to listen to and to see how fast you can say these phrases. When you hear "faster, faster," well, you know you're encouraging reading in your child.A very fun book - I recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage
Volume 7: The Castafiore Emerald (1963), Flight 714 for Sydney (1968), Tintin and the Picaros (1976). This is the last instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
5-0 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong w/ Tintin? Love it!
Tintin is cool. The classic stories are a joy to read & Captain Haddock is always a riot! Funny, suspensful stories! Well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tintin is sooo wonderful
I love Tintin, and I would reccomend that you buy this book. It is the last three books in the Tintin seiries. If you are a Tintin maniac like me, then you would definately buy this. Even if you aren't a maniac, I would still reccomend it. Tintin in the Picaros is very good, and Flight 714 is verry funny. Even though they say Tintinis a reporter-slueth, I think he is more like a detective because he always has a gun. This book is soooo good. It won't take that long to read all three adventures, but you can always read them again. GO TINTIN! ... Read more
