5-0 out of 5 stars Berenstain Bears for a Second Generation
My daughter Jamie wanted to buy this book to give to my three year old grandson, Gavin, so I ordered it from Amazon for her.Jamie, who is now 25, remembers how much she enjoyed this book when she was young and wanted to share it with her nephew. He was able to "read" it right away. I have since also ordered Bears in the Night, which is another early reader book. These two are wonderful classics for any mother or grandmother to add to a child's collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Berenstain Bears andf the Spooky Old Tree
Great book for young readers.Easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woohoo!I Found It!
Excellent children's book! One of my all-time favorites when growing up.I STILL have the copy and I am old enough to wipe my own hiney and drive it around. ;)Anyhow, Jan and Stan Berenstain did a marvelous job writing this book. The pictures are what you would expect from these creative writers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic to cherish
I had this Babar book as a child and could not resist buying it for my daughter, and I am so happy that I did. This book is so incredible, the pictures and colors so vibrant and the text so incredibly addictive, that your child wil carry it with her forever.I know I have.I was stunned by how much of the dialogue and how many of the pictures I remembered. This book is a reasure that you and your children will share for years to come. Some people my comment about some of the themes, but as a child they went over my head, and as an adult, I recognized how tastefully done they are.Highest possible recommendation

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely story
This is such an awesome story.I can remember reading it when I was a child. My three-year-old son can't get enough of this book.Other reviewers have expressed concern with the sad parts of the story (Babar's mother killed and the elephant king dying,) but they didn't bother my son a bit.We just talked about what was happening and he was okay. This is a classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic tale to share with your children
I love Babar as much for the pictures as for the story. When I read it again to my daughter, I turned to the page where "Alas, that very day, the King of the elephants had eaten a bad mushroom" and thought wow, I remember that! The resurging memory of that illustration is so keen in my mind, it's as if twenty-plus years had just fallen away. And next comes my very favorite line, for its old-fashioned text and neatness of phrase:"It poisoned him and he became ill, so ill that he died. This was a great calamity."Which is not to say that the story of Babar dwells on sad things, because it doesn't.Whatever happens to Babar he deals with it with grace and moves on.Endlessly adaptable, this is an elephant who so charms the ladies that he woos and wins Celeste in just their brief drive home. The only sticking point for some parents who are encountering this book for the first time and therefore don't have their eyes all misting over with tender rememberances of their own childhood is that Babar is chosen to be the new king of the elephants because he is considered to have "learned so much living among men".If you are trying not to teach your children that humans are above and beyond all other animals, you may not want this subtle message.Overall, I think this book is wonderful and, at the end, when he and Celeste fly away in a hot air balloon to begin their honeymoon, it is clear that the story continues. This can be taken in the vein of allowing for endless opportunity of sequels but I prefer to think of it as the beginning of your child's opportunity to answer "what happens next" and regale you with their own series of stories about the adventures of Babar, the little elephant. ... Editorial Review

"Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches / Had bellies with stars. / ThePlain-Belly Sneetches / Had none upon thars." This collection of four of Dr. Seuss's most winning stories begins with that unforgettable tale of the unfortunate Sneetches, bamboozled by one Sylvester McMonkey McBean ("the Fix-it-up Chappie"), who teaches them that pointless prejudice can be costly. Following the Sneetches, a South-Going Zax and a North-Going Zax seem determined to butt heads on the prairie of Prax. Then there's the tongue-twisting story of Mrs. McCave--you know, the one who had 23 sons and named them all Dave. (She realizes that she'd be far less confused had she given them different names, like Marvin O'Gravel Balloon Face or Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate.) A slightly spooky adventure involving a pair of haunted trousers--"What was I scared of?"--closes out the collection. Read more

great family book.My son loves the sneetches, i love the fact i can teach him a lesson in a fun and loving manner.he is four and can read some of the stories to me.. great value too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story that teaches an important lesson!
I can recall many viewings of "The Sneetches" when I was a young kid, but with age, the movie sort of went away...until 1995, when I was in sixth grade. My teacher suprised us with a movie to show during Social Studies class..."The Sneetches."My class was excited about seeing an old favorite, and while we were entertained, the real reason he showed it was that it provided a lesson--just because you look different on the outside doesn't mean your different on the inside. The story teaches acceptance of those that are different. The Plain-Belly Sneetches wanted stars, b/c they had none. The were looked down upon, and a scam artist decided to help the Plain-Belly Sneetches get the stars they wanted. Not to be outdone, the Star-Belly Sneetches had theirs removed. This resulted in the Sneetches replacing and removing the stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pale green pants with nobody inside 'em
When I was a kid, the very last story in this book scared the hell out of me. No, really. It's called "What Was I Afraid Of" and it's about a pair of pale green pants with nobody inside 'em. I spent many nights both horrified and fascinated by that concept. I swear it's why I write the morbid stuff I write today.

Very good story for children and aldult as well

5-0 out of 5 stars What I consider Tintin's greatest adventure when he goes to the Moon
Of the seven volumes that make up the "Adventures of Tintin," Volume 5 is my favorite. It includes both the first story by Herg that I ever read with "Land of Black Gold," and also my favorite two-part Tintin adventure when out young intrepid reporter, Snowy, and their friends head for the moon.I realize the science fiction aspects of that particular pair of tales makes them atypical Tintin adventures, but Herg's attention to detail makes the story stand out quite well, even in comparison to science fiction films that were putting men on the moon at that time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I visited a friend in a Malaysian hospital, and on the TV in the lobby was an animated series allegedly about Madeline. Tis an abomination devoutly to be missed.
5-0 out of 5 stars The complete tales of Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans
As the title indicates, "Mad About Madeline: The Complete Tales" has the virtue of providing all six of Ludwig Bemelmans stories about the irrepressible Madeline, who first made her appearance way back in 1939.There is also an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Anna Quindlen; an essay by Bemelmans on how he invented Madeline entitled "The Isle of God"; and never-before-published photographs of the Bemelmans family and working sketches of Madeline.I was rather surprised to learn Madeline was celebrating her 60th birthday and even more surprised to learn these stories were not originally written and published in France (I thought it was obvious they were).
5-0 out of 5 stars -----> :-D
Okay, so my title is cutesy, but so is this glorious book. Why it is the publishers waited through four generations of appreciative readers to give little girls (and not so little girls) all the Madeline stories in one volume is beyond me, but who's to complain now that they're finally here? I bought this on first sight. In fact my hand was reaching for it at Borders before my brain had quite coordinated with my eyes what I was seeing. These tales of the spirited little Madeline and her life at the French orphanage are full of the sort of lovely, bright illustrations children react to and remember. (I've written about it before but there's something about vivid colors in a book that stimulates a young mind as little else can, and Madeline is brimming with them.) Now that all Madeline tales can be held in two hands, the opportunity is finally there to settle into bed for the night and read through these beloved little stories until sleep carries you away. Simply grand!

I had Dr. Seuss' books as a child and want my baby to enjoy them as much as I did. This nursery book is brightly colored, very sturdy and my 5-mo old keeps reaching for it. The plastic fish on the top make noise and baby loves to keep count with them. I'm very very happy with this purchase. I also reccomend other board books form this nursery collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst translation I've ever seen
This is a put-down to the Spanish language. It is literally translated- word-for-word, and obviously that does not work with any kind of translation. The translator has to use his/her disgression to transmit the message through whatever type of mediumthey are working with.In this case, Dr. Seuss's writing is playful and rhyming- this translation does not do this book any justice. They should really never have published this.Even as a non-native speaker of Spanish, I know that this translation is not well-done.My suggestion-- go read "Huevos verdes con jamon", which is wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL TRANSLATION!!!
We first bought "Huevos Verdes con Jamon" an excellent translation of "Green Eggs and Ham."The translator, Aida E. Marcuse, managed to play with the wording to retain the "Seussian" rhyme, rhythm, and whimsy.Based on that, we bought this bilingual edition without inspecting it first--big mistake!
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, useless
Not only does this lose all the wit and charm of the original, it's not even very good as a Spanish primer.I can't imagine a real Spanish speaker using this kind of convoluted syntax. If you're looking for a fun Spanish children's book to read, then "Huevos Verdes con Jamon" (Green Eggs and Ham) is a much better choice, as well as many of the other Aida Marcuse translations. If what you want is a good vocabulary-builder transliteration, try the Spanish versions of P.D. Eastman's Books ("Corre, Perro Corre!" or "Eres tu Mi Mama?").Anything but this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heirloom Quality Collectible Book - It's that good!
After reading the review of this book, I was hopeful but not too excited. A few days later, after ordering a new copy of the book from Amazon, I was elated. This is the WINNIE THE POOH book I have been waiting for, for years. Someone finally took the time and loving care to do it right. Everything about this book, from the color, cut out bookcover (and COLOR hardcover cover underneath it!) to the light yellow butter colored pages with full color EH Shephard illustrations lavishly presented throughout, this book is obviously a work of love. The map of 100 Acre Wood on both front and back inside cover is in color!!This beautiful edition was produced to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of this story and it is a winner. The story itself, of course, is priceless and enduring, but the presentation, this time around wins kudos. I immediately placed it on my bookshelf. This one is a keeper. Don't miss out - and don't buy cheaper editions - trust me, this is the one you want. Worth every penny and more. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has been wildly popular with children and adults for over 50 years. Children adore her because she understands them--and because her upside-down house is always filled with the smell of freshly baked cookies, and her backyard with buried treasure. Grownups love her because her magical common sense solutions to children's problems succeed when their own cajoling and yelling don't. For the child who refuses to bathe, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle recommends letting her be. Wait until the dirt on her body has accumulated to half an inch, then scatter radish seeds on her arms and head. When the plants start sprouting, the nonbather is guaranteed to change her mind about that bath. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Mrs. Grassfeather, Mrs. Ragbag...Where does it end?
This book is great. If you ever have a problem with your child's behavior, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is the one to call. Her outrageous solutions to common child behavior ailments seem to work well.In most cases she recommends letting the child wallow in his or her own awful behavior until rock bottom is reached.Only then is the child aware of the real-life consequences for bad behavior.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mrs. Piggle Wiggle
I really liked Mrs. Piggle Wiggle because there were different stories about her curing people. I have read the stories about her but think this onewas the best. You may think that they take place in different places, but all the children in the stories know each other and the all live in the same town.

4-0 out of 5 stars Family Favorite
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle was 'The Nanny'/'Dr.Phil' of her time. These stories offer parents and children interesting ways to deal with daily chores and struggles that can sometimes seem overwhelming. I enjoyed reading this book as a child and couldn't resist purchasing it for my girls 4 and 2 to enjoy. We have been working our way through various childrens' novels as part of our bedtime ritual. Books like this are good for holding the attention of children at various levels of reading and reading comprehension. These stories have also served as a springboard for discussion in our family about finding creative new ways to accomplish the many tasks that need to be done to keep the household running. Some of the material may seem dated, but it's definetely a classic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Uniqe book you'll grow to love FAST
Basic premise is that a young man wakes up one day, and things are "wacky" (i.e. upside down, like shoes on the ceiling.)Then for the next 13 pages there is roughly 1 extra new wacky thing per page (culminating in 12, and then I think 20 wacky things on the last 2 pages.)Kids have a great time trying to figure out what's wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wacky Wednesday
Great first book for those learning to read.Kept my son sitting still long enough to finish - he wanted to keep looking for all of the wacky things in the pictures.Another great Dr. Seuss staple!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my 6-year-old's favorite book
My kids love this book. They love looking for the wacky things on each page and laugh and laugh as we are reading it.It's not a book to read when you are in a hurry though because some of the pages have a lot of wacky things to find. This is a fun book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book thinking to teach my son about manners, saying please and thank you.He does say please and thank you, but the book taught even more about going to school, playing safe, etc.He loves the characters Huckle and Lowly very much.He loves the book and since he was so familiar with the characters I bought him the Richard Scarry's Best Learning Video Ever (DVD). He watches it over and over and sings along.Huckle and Lowly are great.Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars my son begged me to buy this classic manners book
my 5-year-old loves this book and parents will appreciate it too. i have tried to teach my child good manners and proper attitudes for years, but this book really clicked with him more than any of my talking. in fact, he refers to it daily! a very cute book, and not overtly preachy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to remember

Editorial Review

Verdi is a proud python, flourishing in the flower of his youth. He loves to swiftly slither around the forest, brandishing his bright yellow skin, and can't fathom why anyone would want to be sleepy and green like the adult snakes he knows. Verdi insists, as so many youngsters do, "I will never be lazy, boring or green!" Despite his resolve to stay young, one day he notices a patch of green spreading down the length of his body. Verdi does everything he can think of to erase this first sign of the inevitable tide of age. But in his frenzy of youthful, Icarus-like bravado, he nearly kills himself. Finally, Verdi learns that even though he can't stop the aging process, green skin won't keep him from being a fun-loving, young-at-heart, figure-eight-forming snake. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars verdi good!, but not stellaluna
My 7 1/2 yr old 2nd grade daughter & I read Stellaluna off her summer reading list.I had heard of/seen this book around, but it had never grabbed me.I was quite surprized at the fabulous illustrations, the story that draws you in, & the author's ability to make a bat lovable.I was eager to read Verdi, expecting the same experience.I thought the story was OK & the illustrations beautiful, but the story itself lacked depth to me.The young whippersnapper & wise old sage qualities hit me as being more relevant to an adult reader.Children can not adequately appreciate the age contrast, & how quickly time passes, & how we all become more boring & old than oiur young minds thought we would.Curiously, my daughter liked Verdi as well, if not better than Stellaluna. To each his own - read & see what you think.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book!
This book not only has beautiful illustrations but also tells the tale of growing up from a child's perspective (well, a snake's...).Our three year old LOVES it!It also gives a glimpse into life in the tropics which for our Minnesota boy is exotic!Thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always a favorite
Tintin comic books have always been a favorite. And I like the fact that now you get three stories in one volume - helps to complete the series quickly. Great for kids and for adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage
Volume 4: Red Rackham's Treasure (1944), The Seven Crystal Balls (1948), Prisoners of the Sun (1949). This is fourth instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories
Herge's creation of Tintin is truly a marvel, and these adventures in this book have suspense, along with jokes. There is a bit of Spanish, in Prisoners of the Sun, and all the scenes are THE BEST. ... Read more

Editorial Review

"This is George. George was a good little monkey and always very curious." Upon hearing these words, generations of children have settled in for a cozy interlude of adventures with their favorite trouble-mongering chimp. Fans of the insatiably inquisitive George will be delighted to find that eight new adventures, written and illustrated in the style of George's creators, have been collected in one big blue book. Each story follows the same pattern; the man with the yellow hat trustingly leaves George alone for just a minute--which is long enough for him to get into a peck of trouble. The lovable monkey tempts disaster and saves the day over and over, first in a chocolate factory, then in an animal shelter, a movie theater, a hot air balloon... but can we blame him? Who hasn't wondered how chocolates get their swirls, or what makes a movie appear on the screen?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for Curious George
I bought this book for my 3 year old, but my six year old still loves it too. A nice variety of cute, but not too long stories.I give it as a birthday gift at 4 year old birthday parties and always get good feedback.

5-0 out of 5 stars She loved the book.
I purchased this book as a B-day gift for my 8yr old daughter and she loves it. She has already read the whole book and is on to the next one. I like the fact that you get 8 stories all in one nice hardcover book, saves space and is very durable, which is great for the 5 toddlers I have running around that also love to look at the book.
