5-0 out of 5 stars wrong name for an excellent book
I originally bought this book for my grand children who love dinosaurs, and ended up keeping it.This book is not just about dinosaurs but it is about the evolution of life from the beginning. As usualDorling Kindersley produced an excellent book superbly illustrated.I highly recommend it for people of any age.It is now part of my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!
My four year old loves dinosaurs! This book along with the other books I have purchased have been a great help with him and they are very informative. Some of the best books I have read on dinosaurs. The pictures really help with distinguishing the difference between some of the species.Highly recommended for anyone of any age!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond bedtime stories
My boys, ages 7 and 5, LOVE this book!!We've worn out the first copy, and have to buy another. The boys were just not satisfied with cutesy bedtime stories, they want to know details about animals, and the dinosaur age fascinates them.So we got this book, and they just soak in all that the pages have to offer. This really jumpstarted their interest in nonfiction and our collection (and their knowledge) grows by leaps and bounds daily. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Tells It Like It Is
As a soon to be teacher, and part time archaeologist, this is by far the best book about archaeology for young kids I have found. It gives accurate information in fun, easy to understand language. My students were always interested in my summer and weekend work outside of the school. It was wonderful to find a book I could share with them that was not over their heads. My archaeology professor from college even borrowed it to share with his entry level classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-conceived and informative
This book is part of the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series, which has more than 80 titles. The Stage 1 books explain simple and easily observable science concepts for preschool- and kindergarten-age children. Stage 2books, which includes this title, explore more challenging concepts forchildren in the primary grades and include hands-on activities thatchildren can do themselves. "Archaeologists Dig For Clues" iswell-conceived and informative, with bright cartoon drawings. It isformatted a little like the "Magic School Bus" books, more for upperelementary kids. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mahnomen, Minnesota Third Graders
This book was very interesting. Our class read this together. We learned that mammoths are extinct and that hunters used their bones and furs to survive. Aliki has a lot of talent for writing and illustrating. We recommend this book and his book called "Fossils".

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful illustrations, clear text
This book encompasses man as hunter, diversity of species, extinction, scientific inquiry --while being firmly grounded and tangible. The phrases are broken up on the page the same way that I pace the story when I read aloud. The explanations and transitions are clear and logical (except the second page which abruptly mentions the dinosaurs and then bounces back to the Ice Age again.) Wonderful book for curious minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Akiki Does It Again !
As an elementary school teacher, I am always on the "look out" for books that will enthrall my students.Aliki never disappoints.Wild and Wooly Mammoths is an intersting and enjoyable book.My students lovedthe beautiful illustrations and the easy to read format. The book ispacked with fascinating facts and details. My students looked forward toreading time and asked to read other books by Aliki. We bought class setsof Mummies Made in Egypt and also The Medieval Feast.Children simply lovethese books and the wonderful illustrations. All my students voted Wildand Wooly Mammoths as a class favorite.I recommend this book for allelementary students. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Artist Approved!
My artwork is inspired by the cave paintings of Lascaux, France, and this is *the* book I take with me to shows and exhibits to explain my work.Although supposedly geared for elementary age readers, I find the book an excellent, coherent overview to this amazing art.The photographs are first-rate.The modern paintings of imagined scenes from the past are well done--attractive, detailed, well-rendered, keeping in the same spirit as the actual artwork depicted. And the text is well-written, balanced, thoughtful, rich in imagery, and sometimes poetic. The book is actually more beautifully done, and more informative, than the college texts that I studied in the 1970's about the Lascaux cave.I highly recommend this title, not only as a first introduction to this amazingly rich artwork, but as a sweet little book to round out a serious collection on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Painters of the Caves
Students studying European cave art will find this an excellent resource.Great color photographs of many of the most famous cave pictures along with text at an appropriate reading level for upper elementary grades make this a worthwhile addition to any classroom or personal library.I use this book with my 6th grade Humanities curriculum. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The feared and maybe revered Cave Bear of the Ice Age
I am a dinosaur person and have been ever since my Great Aunt Helen took me to the Peabody Museum at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut where they had the "brontosaurus" skeleton with the wrong head and the famous mural on the Age of Dinosaurs. There was also the display on prehistoric mammals, with its own mural, and pretty good skeletons of a sabertooth tiger and elk, but it was not the same. However, after reading "Clan of the Cave Bear" and the rest of the "Earth's Children" series by Jean M. Auel I do have much more respect for and interest in the "Ice Age Cave Bear: The Giant Beast that Terrified Ancient Humans" (the Peabody does not have a Cave Bear skeleton the last time I checked). In fact, Barabar Hehner comments indirectly on "Clan of the Cave Bear" in this book when she talks about how the theories that the Neanderthals worshipped the cave bear have been called into question (prominently on the back cover in fact). That is rather disappointing if true, but that is why fiction is often more entertaining than the truth.5-0 out of 5 stars With eye-catching, realistic illustrations
Mark Hallett provides eye-catching, realistic illustrations to accompany the dramatic story of massive giant cave bears who were feared thousands of years ago. Kids in grades 5-6 will find this slim-looking book anything but a simple reader: it's packed with information and smaller print than usual, but has a high interest level to keep kids excited about the prehistoric creatures. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro/overview of dinosaurs.
This frothy little book features small, easy to follow descriptions of how dinosaurs may have lived and looked. The artwork is quite good and the primary reason I give it four stars. It can serve as a nice way to introduce the young and beginning reader to our favorite extinct animals.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over, dinosaurs and prehistoric reptiles!
This is the best book on prehistoric animals I've ever spent money on! Even better than walking with dinosaurs! The photos are nearly real, if not completely, the information is wonderful for everyone age 11 and up, and every piece of the book is perfect for all who like cool animals, prehistoric or modern day! My favorite was the chapter with the Smilodons(they are my favorite prehistoric animal of all time, of course!)It was cool, and so were all the other huge chapters! Oh, and the mammoths rocked, as well, I might add. I will tell you this, too-this book is educational and fun. You should give it to any nature lover! It is absolutely superb. I recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in nature and/or history!

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is sure to please
even though i know its impossible, i stilldream of going to times way back, like time periods when this book takes place. this book takes you a step closer. with the realistic computer graphics and the very descriptive language and informative facts, it is hard to look out the window and not see giant mammals roaming around, or not hear the distant growls of fighting animals, or not see the world as a lush tropical rain forest (as it was in the mid Eocene)or a sunny grassy grassland (late eocene). if time travel ever does become a reality, this will be one of the first places i visit

5-0 out of 5 stars The Beasts have returned
The book is about dinosaurs that live in the prehistoric times.
