5-0 out of 5 stars Indeed, the "fairest of them all"
Aza ins't just plain; she's plain ugly. In a land where song, grace, and beauty are prized, Aza's large stature (not just in heighth but also breadth) are deemed appalling and overshadow her amazing abilities in singing. Abandoned at the Featherbed Inn as a newborn, she is lovingly raised by her foster family. But their love can't oversome the low self-esteem Aza develops because of how other people treat her. When an unexpected chance to travel to court for a royal wedding comes, Aza is hesitant but goes to help her family. There, she is "befriended" by the new queen, Ivi, who is selfish and self-absorbed. Soon after the wedding, the king is severally injured and Ivi is claimed ruler in his place. Forcing Aza to use her unusual ability to project her voice for her own gains, the queen quickly becomes a dictator that threatens Aza's honor, her tenuous relationship with Prince Ijori (the king's nephew and heir), and the country in general. Can Aza overcome her own lack of self-assurance to save herself and her land?

5-0 out of 5 stars delightful retelling of Snow White
As a newborn, Aza was left at the Featherbed Inn in the village of Amonta, Ayortha.Though a baby, she was singing, which brought her to the attention of the kind innkeepers Father and Mother, who raise her with love alongside their biological offspring. However, Aza is far from pretty so as to not disturb their customers; she remains hidden when the inn is open for business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Middle School kids
I have use this book in my middle school classroom. The kids enjoy it.Yes, it is silly but heck so are middle school kids!Since reading the book and discussing it, the kids have a much better understanding of what pi really is, instead of just saying about 3.14.

4-0 out of 5 stars Discovering PI in a mid evil kind of way.
Radius has to discover PI in order to save his father, Sir cumference from the evil curse of the fire breathing Dragon. I read this book to a fourth grade class and they really got a kick out of it.They wanted to learn pie along with Radius through his adventures to conquer the curse. This is a creative way to introduce a math lesson to children. There is even places to stop and let the kids try a couple problems. The activities include measuring and dividing.Teachers this is a must have. ... Editorial Review

Once there was a little girl--an orphaned African princess--who narrowly escaped death by human sacrifice in a West African village in 1850. A British sea captain named Frederick E. Forbes saved her life by talking King Gezo of Dahomey into giving the girl to Queen Victoria of England as a gift: "She would be a present from the King of the blacks to the Queen of the Whites." As impossible as this tale sounds, it is a true one. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers--piecing together her story from letters he found in a rare book and ephemera shop in London--paints a hauntingly detached portrait of the small African princess whom the heroic captain named Sarah Forbes Bonetta. 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and easy to read.
My son had to pick two books off of a large list to read over the summer for school. After reading the other reviews of this book, we picked it.It was a wonderful choice. The book was very interesting, fast paced, well written and easy to read.I read it in 3 hours, and my son was able to read in in a few nights without any complaints of boredom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Isn't Hollywood Calling???
If any literary giant needs to have his work adapted to film, it is Myers. As one of the premier writers of fiction for juveniles, the author has added another significant piece to his long line of classics. This one tells the story of a little-known African princess who comes under the wing of England's legendary Queen Victoria. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
I think this is a very well written book. I think that Walter Dean Myers is an amazing writer and that it is great he found this fantastic girl that many have never heard of. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the secret of life
So of course my senior quote was, "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."Because I knew that in order to create my ideal life, I would have to follow the best advice Saint-Exupery offers us in this book. And I knew that he was sharing the secret of life with us.Following your heart, following the path that you know is right for your soul, is the way to achieve inner peace.Your heart always shows you the right way.Especially when you are lost.
5-0 out of 5 stars You're lovely, but you're empty. One couldn't die for you.
To be honest, I never read The Little Prince, or even really remembered it from my childhood. What brought it up, was playing the game Katamari Damacy. Apparently, part of the game was inspired by this tale, and that made me interested. Anything that inspired a very charming game couldn't be a loss, right? Unfortunately, the first time I picked up the book, I didn't get into it, and left it to collect dust for several months. But I gave it another shot recently, and read it during my breaks at work, and ended up getting quite a bit out of the book. Most importantly, how differently the world is when you're a child- I forgot how things seemed back then. The stars, animals, jobs people have, everything is completely different from how you see it as a child, than how you see it as an adult. Part of me is ashamed for letting that happen, so to put it. The dedication in this book even makes a jab at this fact, asking the children reading the book for forgiveness, dedicating it to an adult, his friend Leon Werth. He instead corrects it and dedicates the book "to Leon Werth when he was a little boy"- the person who became Leon. That alone should give you an understanding of how to take the rest of this book. While some children may not understand everything here (I actually recommend it to children age 7 and up, at youngest), the adults reading it to them certainly will, and that's just as important. I should mention though, before reviewing, that this review concerns the 60th Anniversary Edition. Amazon, for whatever reason, combines reviews for a product, even if they're clearly alternate versions. So I don't know about the minor translation changes that some people noticed, as I haven't read the book before this edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not a hat but an elephant inside a boa constrictor
My only regret about this book is I never learned enough in French class to read and enjoy the untranslated version.THE LITTLE PRINCE is such a charming fable and makes so many points about what is really important in life and how to live it that it will linger in the thoughtful reader's memory forever. The simple perfect artwork is as memorable as the text.Perhaps the tragic death of the author adds extra poignancy but THE LITTLE PRINCE would be a well loved classic if Antoine de Saint-Exupery had died of old age in his bed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for all ages!
This is an excellent book about Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of Russia's last tsar. As many know, Anastasia was murdered with her entire family in 1918. This book tells Anastasia's story through her own words. Her letters reflect a happy, secure young girl who came from a loving family. It shows readers a world that is gone and will never return. Though it was written for young children, all ages with enjoy "Anastasia's Album!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your normal Biography!
The first time I found this book at the public library I just barely seen Fox's movie Anastasia for the first time. Surprised to find out that Anastasia was a real person, I checked out the book expecting it to be similar to most biographies.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very sad, now that I think about it
I remember this book from when I was a kid, after the 'Anastasia' movie came out my friend had this book, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It's full of beautiful photos and pictures the Grand Duchess drew herself. It seems really heartbreaking now that all she got to leave was her scrapbook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars To Be a Princess
I have always loved reading about royalty, so naturally I enjoyed this book. It introduces you to the famous (and not so famous) princesses of the world. I only wish the authors went a bit deeper in the biographies. I noticed a striking resemblance in the facts mentioned in many princess biographies to facts mentioned in the Royal Diaries series. Coincidence? Perhaps. This is a nice book for younger children, with nice illustrations and pictures, but I find The Royal Diaries more engrossing and in-depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I had intended to read just one story a day in this fascinating book, but found it impossible to stop with just that one story. Brewster and Coulter write well and know their princesses. The writing just seems to fill the reader in on so many aspects of the princesses' lives. I can see this book enticing youngsters to want to read more about the young ladies in the stories. As an avid adult reader, I have read enough about the princesses to give me background and fill in some of the information left out. But for a young someone just discovering these people, their appetites would be whetted and I would think they would want to find other books to read. Definitely a fascinating book. The pictures are placed throughout the text in a reader-friendly fashion. My only qualm was the sentence in the last paragraph on Elizabeth and Margaret: "Queen Elizabeth still rules England." I don't know much about England's government, but I'm pretty sure the queen does not "rule" England. However, I'd still recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about the world's royalty. It was a fun and interesting read.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my little sister-in-law's favorite books...I can see why.
The story follows Princess Sylvie, the heroine of an out-of-print storybook, as she struggles to preserve her story, her family and the rest of her supporting cast from utter extinction. Sylvie's efforts take her from the pages of her book to the mind and dreams of a reader, opening up whole new vistas of plot twists and peril. The treatment of literary characters is much more sentimental than that in, for example, the Thursday Next novels, but it's undeniably sweet in its own way. The narrative is simple and told in a voice reminiscent more of fairy tales than of novels.
4-0 out of 5 stars "The great good thing"
When i read the first paragraph of the great good thing ,i didnt quite understand, but when i really got into the book i began to understand the book . Then i started to love the book. This book is fabulous. Its packed with great words, plots that pop,and the characters really come off of the pages and into your head. Its a really great book for any age to read. This book was one of the best books that i have ever read in my entire life.I really recommend that you read this fantastic book,it'll blow your mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great good Read
I bought this book for my nieces, but as with everything, read it first. On the surface the basic story is a good fantasy tale. Below the surface is an intricate and subtlly layered story that leaves you thinking about the characters long after the book is closed. And in my opinion THIS is what makes a good tale. I want to give a growing mind food for thought and I think this book is it. ... Read more

I usually like Meg Cabot, but this book was a waste of my money. It is boring and not half as good as I expected of Cabot. The Princess Diaries Books, as oppose to the series, are just not worth it.

We're either approaching or all ready knee deep in the holiday season, depending on your point of view. Many of us feel overwhelmed by this time of year, but don't worry, Princess Mia is here to rescue us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Princess Mia's take on celebrating the holidays
Back again with another addition to the Princess Diaries series, Princess Mia invites us to share the holidays with her and the family in her witty rendition of what happens during the holidays. Loaded with advice from everyone closely associated with her, each chapter is also laden with her own views and excerpts on how things really are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Compelling
My name is Doug Hiser, author of the 2006 novel,The Honey Bee Girl.I have been reading and collecting Alice Hoffman books since I discovered Turtle Moon.I have read them all and The Fortelling is my favorite.I loved her narrative and moving story. In some ways it reminded me of Clan of the Cave Bear and also of mystical ancient cultures that we see only in dreams.Alice Hoffman's prose is the main reason I fell in love with her books. She is the magic realism of writing the way Michael Parks is of the dreamlike reality of art and Frank Frazetta is the master of fantasy painting. The Fortelling is a short work of literary genius accessible to everyone. She has deep intense knowledge of the emotions and feelings that most people can only guess about.Discover her writing through this compelling work and then find your way into her other books. You won't be disappointed.Doug Hiser

In this intense yet complicated fantasy story, Rain attempts to gain her mother's notice and acceptance by being the best of warriors in their Amazonian tribe. The product of a rape when her mother, Alina, wasn't much more than a child herself, it is hard to gain the Queen's approval.Although Rain knows that she's been raised by Deborah, the wise priestess, to one day be Queen herself, she also pays attention to Deborah's promises of a much grander destiny.
4-0 out of 5 stars Brief But Compelling...
This book is short and that's unfortunate because I think the story could have been made longer but regardless it was a very compelling story. I liked how it was written and Rain I instantly loved as a character. Amazon women I have always heard of and reading about them was really interesting and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kid tested, mother approved
This book was one of three Bullseye Classics we bought for my son's second grade English class. He picked this one up as soon as the box arrived and had it read within an hour.He loved the stories and was able to re-tell them to his little sister. I hadn't heard the stories about "Big Hands" or "What do women want?"This collection really got his imagination going and he wants to read more about King Arthur.
1-0 out of 5 stars Awful writing, terrible grammar, bad for children
In addition to the ham-handed telling of the story, the writing in these Bullseye books is just terrible. Half-sentences. Written like this. Or this.Part of the value of such books is that young readers will learn to read "chapter books." But the English and grammar in these books is so abysmal as to render them useless for this task.I was very disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for reading to a younger child

4-0 out of 5 stars Princess School: If the Shoe Fits
I'm 16 and loved this book. My sister (age 10) was reading it and the title caught yy eye so I picked it up. It's really cute and it stresses great values such as indiviuality and friendship. I found that this book made the princesses more like real girls and gives them the opportunity to relate to them better. It was good and I recommend it really for anyone who is a princess at heart.

This book is so good. I'm 12, almost 13, but I like reading fantasy books. I found this book in my school computer lab and started reading it. I hope to read the others. It looks like a book for 6 years old, but it's not. It's great for all ages!
5-0 out of 5 stars Familiar Princesses with a twist!
This was an awesome book. Like most people, i wish Ella was brunette. I guess disney made her blonde in the movie. My favorite character is Rose, though. They didn't have a whole ton of her. I've read the first three books, but I've started the fourth. When i picked it up, i though i was too old to read it, but i was wrong. It's great for all ages! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute, Short Book
This is a cute book for a younger Disney princess lover. It is not very long and is not set-up as stories to read (other than a short synopsis introducing each princess)but rather random facts about each character. For $10, it isn't so much for a large hardcover book your toddler will love to flip through on occasion. If you are looking for princess stories to read together, try another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for your Disney Princess lover
My 3yr old daughter found this book at the library and loved it! She hadn't been too exposed to the whole Disney Princess thing until then and this book caused her to become obessed with them! We bought her the book and in the last 6 months that she has had it she looks at it almost everyday. I would definately recommend this book to any little girl. It covers 6 different Disney Princesses and devotes at least 4 pages to each. It is easy to read out loud and you can pick and choose what parts to read. I am giving one to our 2 yr old niece for Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kristina: the girl King
I think that this was the best one out of all of the Royal Diary seris. I seriously could not put it down when I had too.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Teen's Point of View
This book was interesting and well written, but not very believable. You couldn't really believe that a girl was actually writing it. It is good, though, and I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kristina, who always wanted to be a boy, writes in her diary.............
Carolyn Mayer, has nicely put up the picture of a girl who wants to be King of her country, not Queen!Kristina, is under her beloved aunt's care, due to her original mother's bad care, and mistreatment she had set upon Kristina.Kristina, was meant to be a boy, was thought to be a boy, until, her aunt took her naked and showed her parents her true gender.Due to this, Kristina's mother decided to make poor Kristina's life a misery, even though her father rejoiced and nicknamed her the girl king!

Editorial Review

Meg Cabot entertained thousands of readers with her Princess Diariesseries about a somewhat awkward teenage girl from Manhattan whodiscovers that she's actually heir to the throne of a small Europeanprincipality. In this princess-pink guidebook, the unlikely royal MiaThermopolis informs her fans that if she can be a princess, anyone can--with the help of a few princess lessons, that is. (Of course, shehonestly doesn't know why anyone would want to when they could lead aperfectly normal life.)This how-to guide for princesses-in-training--written in the voices ofTina, Grandmère, and other characters from the series--is surprisinglyapplicable to daily, non-royal life. While it is peppered withprincess-specific advice (such as how to perfect a curtsy), it is notquite the spoof one might expect. In the Beauty section, for example, the manual emphasizes confidence, minimal makeup, and hygiene. In theEtiquette section, we learn not to slouch, shuffle, skip, or saunter.Readers will find polite e-mail protocol, musings on popularity, fiveeasy ways to save the planet, and even Lily and Mia's list of movies inwhich characters achieve self-actualization. Chesley McLaren's comical, artful illustrations reflect the tongue-in-cheek tone of this fairlycommon-sense manual for surviving Polite Society. And remember:"Throughout history, princesses have been remembered not for the waistsize of their 501s, but for the good deeds they performed when they wereon the throne." (Ages 10 and older) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book in the whole world
this is the best book ever, since i have a whole line of rolaty in my family it was really helpful and it was so much fun to read and i was really in to it

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Guide Book
It's a good guide book, like how to be a princess. It has funny commentary from Paolo, Grandmere, Lilly, Tina, etc.But the Princess Diaries books themselves are a better read than "Lessons."

5-0 out of 5 stars Princess Diaries
In the Princess Diaries, Mia Thermopolis is just thinking she is a regular freshman at Ablted Einstein high school. Then everything changes her life for good.Because her father has come to town to have a talk with Mia about something important. As they were talking she found out that she was the Princess of Genovia and if he was the prince than that makes her the princes of that country. So then she got all upset went in to the plaza were she paid the lady $5 to go to the bathroom so she could calm down. Then shuttle after that she diced to ask her self how dose the princes thing work out. Then her dad said that he would talk about seeing her for lesson. So she could be ready to take the thrown of the county . so Mia now is taking lesson and math lesson and has found it very rough. I think if the outcome is that she may not take the thrown and will just become normal. I would recommend it for some one to read because it teachers you a good lesson oh who you really are. That is what I think of the Princes Diaries book. ... Read more
