I read this for a graduate class and found it to be a quick, easy read. The authors give you simple ways to enhance your vocabulary instruction. I would recommend this book to teachers at all levels but especially those working 3rd grade and above.

Very useful
I needed to order this book for a class. It is well written and easy to read. As a reading teacher I can say that I will keep this book as a reference long after the class has ended. This edition comes with a CD (or DVD) which I have not previewed yet, but the instructor of my class raves about it.

The best reading methods textbook I've found
I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students.This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way.Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas.Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also.I highly recommend it.

A must have!!
I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since.The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms.There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!!You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof!You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. Wow!
What an amazing, thorough, comphrensive guide to everything Star Wars.NOTHING is left out.You get not only in depth profiles of every major character, but every OTHER character in the universe.It's so detailed that they break down each PART of each weapon, ship, etc.For someone like myself who isn't the biggest Star Wars geek (but wanting to learn more), this is a godsend.There are many, many, hardcore fans out there that can reference almost anything and anyone to do with Star Wars.Well, now you can too, and you don't have to see the films 3245 times to do it.

Amazing Book for the Inquisitive.
This was one of my favorite books as a child, and is a great deal of the reason why I have such an interest in science.The explanations are well written for anyone to understand, and the diagrams really help the reader understand the science better.If you, like me, take things apart to find out how they work, this is the book for you.

A Work of Art
"The Way Things Work" took almost three years to create. A cute and sometimes silly "Great Wooly Mammoth" makes his appearance throughout the book. The facial expressions and animal antics are at times very amusing.

Great, but.......
This book is fantastic; however, I got confused about the book page number. The description says it has 944 pages, but it just has 924. And I don't like the last PSAT part. I think this book should only contain SAT practice tests only. And it wastes a lot of marginal room. This edition doesn't changed a little, if any. Princeton Review should improve a little when release a new edition, not just change the cover. ... Read more

No "blog" but who cares...
Very contempory with updated word list and the extra photos, diagrams, etc. etc. etc. make this a fine choice for kids of all ages from 2 to 92.I am especially happy they included the 'hoopoe' in the bird category.We have many here in Thailand where I live.

very helpful
My daughters are in the third grade and, we have found this dictionary to be very helpful. It is bright and colorful but, it contains quite a bit of information as well. It helps them not only when they are writing something (to look up the spelling of a word) but also to understand the meaning of words. It gives parts of speech, different tenses, and pronunciation of the word as well. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to buy a dictionary for children. I had bought the Scholastic First Dictionary also but, honestly, we did not use that one much at all. The Children's Dictionary is my pick, for sure.

My son is in 3rd grade. Every week he has to read a new story & learn a list of words from that story. Yesterday, I received the dictionary. Paging through it, it's very easy follow. Great Product
My son just finished the Kindergarten program which we broke into approximately 15 lessons (each lesson ranging from 30 - 60 minutes) over a couple of months (it can certainly be accomplished quicker). The CD leads you through the workbook and provides all of the phonetics to assist you and your child.The lessons in the beginning took longer than the book describes but once my son got the hang of it the lessons went quicker.The flash cards with helper words are a fun game to interact with your child. The short stories and books were enjoyable for my son and helped him feel a sense of accomplishment when he earned a sticker on the progress chart.My son used the computer game on his own and it reinforced the concepts we worked on together during the lessons. This program helped introduce him to reading, sounds, comprehending the story, and he was more confident when reading and when sight words were introduced in his Kindergarten class. We both are looking forward to the 1st grade level product.

Excellent program and a great value
We got this program after trying Teach Your Child To Read in 100 EZ Lessons and found that Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten was a much better program for our daughter.Hooked on Phonics K comes with a workbook, several audio CD's, MANY easy reader books, flashcards, and a computer CD.It also comes with a sticker chart where the child can track each new book that they read.

practical qnd classroom friendly
This book is a wonderful resource book for any Language Arts teacher.The key to successfully using it is to find out what the child needs to learn to do to become a better reader.Then Mrs. Beers has listed what to do, and even shows how it has worked with real students.I know the activities could be used with first graders and on up.I taught Reading Recovery for ten years and have studied struggling readers for forty years, and I know these resources will work.I also like the authors she used to gather her research.She didn't just research through books, but also practiced these herself.Mrs. Beers has included places for busy teachers to go easily to find the materials to use.All Language Arts teachers shoud use this book.

When Kids Can't Read What TEachers Can Do
This is a great book for ESL teachers, new teachers and even seasoned teachers that need to help their kids think higher level and need help with comprehension.I have enjoyed everything in it!!!I am not finished but I am already implementing many of the ideas for comprehension.This purchase has been the best money I have spent in a long time!

Excellent book for new arrivals
I purchased this book for a new Mexican friend, who recently moved to the U.S. for two years and speaks practically no English, while I know a smattering of Spanish. We've found it to be invaluable in helping us communicate. When it's obvious that she isn't understanding me, I can turn to the appropriate page--the kitchen, for example--and point to the picture, and she can do the same. Then we work on her pronunciation of the English word. I will probably purchase another one for myself to help me strengthen my Spanish skills. I would also consider the other language titles to correspond with those my sons are studying in school. The format is user-friendly, the color illustrations are happy, and the categories of words are vast and extremely practical--especially helpful to someone struggling to get by in a new country. My friend showed the book to her ESL teacher and was very proud when the instructor recommended the book to the rest of the class!

Great picture dictionary
What makes this dictionary so great is that it is not in alphabetical order and it is based on themes.For example, there is a classroom theme on a page and all of the words that have to do with what is in a classroom.Also, I like the fact that their are numbers next to the object and then all of the words in Spanish and English are at the bottom half of the page.This allows you to cover up all of the words and quiz yourself.

A wealth of information
Finally, I was required to a buy a book that I will actually use again.Both pre-student and veteren teachers will enjoy this book.It contains a wealth of strategies for teaching kids how to write. Hooray for correct punctuation!
As a teacher and mother of 7-year-old twins, I found this book right on target!I have a daily calendar of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" quips, and the girls are happy to be able to get an age-specific taste of why Mommy is a punctuation stickler.They have read through the book several times, and they have each taken time to show me their favorite pages, explaining to me why the comma made such a difference.
Parents/grammar lovers should expect more
I had fun reading this book with my kids. Many of the examples were well chosen, and the pictures were always fun, and sometimes pretty clever. (Can you guess how they illustrated I've finally decided to cheer up, everybody!? I couldn't have.) But as an educational experience, the book ranges from unhelpful to misleading or false. The grammar lovers/parents that it targets should expect more.

This is a very helpful book for ESL Kindergarteners!I have all the Words Their Way books and have used them at every grade level in my elementary school.

A MUST for K-2 teachers.
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with theblack line masters so you can use the strategies immediately.This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships.It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them.There are old faithfuls such as "It's raining, it's pouring" to new poems that teach phonemic awareness, rhyming, visual discrimination and sight words. Best in the market
Along with other aids, this book helped me get a five on the AP exam.
this book is awsome
I got a B in my first semester APUSH class because I actually read through my pompous textbook and forgot everything right before the test. This semester I got this book and I always got easy As on my tests. This book summarizes the main ideas of each chapters without eliminating anything important ideas so you will always be very prepared if you read through this book. The only thing I don't like about this book is that I still can't find the answer key. I contacted the publisher but they wanted me to contact a local retailer for the answer key which was sort of like I needed to buy it.

Understanding and Using English Grammar (Third Edition)
I have used this outstanding book with international students for several years, but it would be helpful if the Answer Key were available from Amazon.

Grammar is difficult
With this book is it possible to learn the english grammar.
Clear and easily understandable
The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F.Read more

AMAZING. The bible of literacy.
This is the book you need for creating and maintaining a solid and authentic classroom literacy program. "The First Twenty Days" alone is extreemely helpful. You can start small and grow as you feel comfortable. A little overwhelming at times but worth it!

Neat Dictionary!
I am in high school and was in serious need of a decent dictionary.I didn't want to spend a fortune either.I saw this dictionary and gave it a try... I LOVE IT!Great pictures and nice quality.Very helpful! My friend ended up buying one also and enjoys it as much as I have. I highly recommend!

A must for any student library
My son is 10 and in fourth grade.We use this dictionary just about everyday for studying poetry.So far, every word we've looked up has been there and with enough explanation to really make sense.We looked up the word "tread" - there were several definitions (about 4 inches worth), but each gave a sentence for context, which helped him pick out the right definition to apply.We also looked up "limerick" - the definition given was complete in that it actually included the rhyming scheme used, which was not included in two other dictionaries we have.There are color pictures and the the writing is large enough for him to read.It was also very reasonably priced.We are very happy with this Dictionary; we liked it so much we bought the American Heritage Thesaurus to go with it!

I stayed up late last night reading my daughter's dictionary!
My six year old needed a dictionary to look up words for her Junior Great Books homework.At first, I was drawn to dictionaries written for 8-10 year olds.They had larger print and flashier, more colorful pictures.Unfortunately, they didn't do the job of providing definitions for the unfamiliar words we needed to define (this week we needed to find tun, puncheon, bewail, and beadle.)I was forced to look at dictionaries aimed at an older audience and found that many were just not visually appealing.I didn't want a bland reference book that would be opened as little as necessary.I wanted something worth flipping through on a rainy day.
