4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and practical
I use this as the text for a university level ESL Methods course.I've especially liked the authors use of specific classroom examples, as well as suggestions for learning activities that students can utilize. It is also full of suggestions for effective teaching strategies to use with ELLs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful with strategies for teaching ELLs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give your child a secret weapon for reading
I used this program with my child who was having trouble keeping up with reading in his class at school so I purchased this program.I worked with him 15 minutes before school each morning and within 2 weeks there was a noticeable improvement in his reading abilities. The progress charts gave him a visual goal for him to see that he was learning and succeeding! It was a huge ego boost for him to put a sticker on the chart to show that he'd passed a section.I can't say enough good about this program.Even if your child is having trouble reading, or is a good reader but could use some work in efficiency, this is the program for you.We completed this program in 2 months, it's up to the user to determine how motivated they are to push through the levels. The easy color coded levels guide you step by step through workbooks and tapes, defining and mastering sounds and rhythems of reading.Being able to work at home and find what his problems areas were took the fear of embarrassment infront of kids in the class out of the picture. The books for reading were interesting and had very cute animals and modern pictures that kids this age would relate to.I'm so happy with this program, I'm moving on with Hooked On Phonics Master Reader.I only wish I'd done this program with all my children.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I ordered the newly revised Deluxe version of HOP so that I could help my kindergartener learn to read. I'm so disappointed that it doesn't use creative teaching methods. Frankly, it's very, very dry and boring.I expected songs, no songs. I expected interactive CDs, there is one in the entire k-2nd grade kit! Provides nice "learn to read" books,a workbook, and a couple of very boring audio CDs.Unfortunately, to access the instructions for each workbook session, one must turn on the audio CD, find the place you last stopped, then listen to the monotone lesson. They are so dull, my daughter tunes right out but there's no other way to get the lesson instructions. The positive side, at least it gives ME a frame of referenceto teach my daughter - but such a wasted opportunity for HOPs to teach! There are many inexpensive CD-ROMs on the market that are more effective. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best review book for AP US History
This is with no doubt the best review guide that you can buy for AP US History, if you use it to its full potential, no questions asked.
3-0 out of 5 stars Review section was okay, practice tests were lacking
I really didn't go through this book as much as other prep books. The review section, while lengthy, lacked information on specific historical figures and left out many of the unifying themes that are indispensable when writing essays for the exam. At best, I skimmed some of the sections, but I found some irrelevant information. This book is great if you have lots of time on your hands to read all of the review section carefully. As for me, I found the information presented in a less than stimulating manner and I ended up relying on course-notes outlines, rereading my American Pageant, the Princeton Review book and my teacher's afterschool review sessions.

Editorial Review

It's meant for high schoolers, but adults who haven't inhaled chalk dust for years might appreciate it even more. The process of organizing, researching and writing a paper is laid is out in easy-to-understand normal-speak. The chapters on grammar and usage are very user-friendly, and lots of extras (suffixes, parliamentary procedure, periodic table, metric system, the U.S. Constitution, world maps, etc.) make this an extraordinarily popular and useful household item. If you're feeling generous, you might even let the kid take it to school on occasion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book for All Students
When my daughter entered high school, her English teacher recommended this book and informed the parents that it would become the "bible" for writing papers. How correct she was!!! This book was used extensively by my daughter in high school. Now that she is away at college and took it with her, I purchased another one for my son.I believe it is the most used book in our house, besides the dictionary. No one can write a paper correctly without owning this resource.

2-0 out of 5 stars No where near as good as the Dictionary!
Our family has greatly enjoyed the Scholastic Children's Dictionary, so it made sense to also get the Scholastic Children's Thesaurus. What a disappointment!Nearly every word my fourth grader looks up (for school work) is not in this book. It is pretty much useless for her school work.Don't bother with it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Bought this based on a 5-star review? WHY??
My child is in 3rd grade and must look up synonyms.Very few of the words on her lists are in this book. This is not a helpful book at all.I guess I should buy an adult thesaurus for 3rd grade!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mosaic of Thought : Teaching Comprehension in a Reader's Workshop
This is an excellent reference for teaching comprehension strategies in the elementary classroom. As a teacher, I refer to this book often. The authors have presented a straight forward guide explanining the importance and logic of their teaching methods. I have used these techniques in my own classroom. I have seen definite improvement in my sudents' comprehension. These improvements have been apparent in boh informal assessments as well as formal evaluations. I would definitely recommend this book to other teachers and homeschooling parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the progressive teacher
As an educator, I try to look for teacher's literature that goes beyond the worksheets and attempts to get at the belief system and structure of what is considered "best practices" in education. This book challenges teachers to delve/question their belief systems, practices and own schema to help better understand how our students think and eventually teaching them a new and deeper way of looking at literature.
2-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?
I read this during my master's program. It is alot of wasted text. I wish it had listed the strategies, attached appendices and not had so much additional mumbo jumbo. This is awesome for discussions on comprehension, but useless as a day to day guide. I will keep my Atwell and Fountas books on hand instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Introductory Research Book
Having previously purchased a required research textbook that was written in a truly "mind-numbing" fashion, I went online to find a supplemental text.I was looking for something to help me develop some background knowledge in order to better understand my assigned readings.I consider myself very lucky for having found "Exploring Research".The writing style is very straightforward.I was easily able to read the textbook within a few days, and this made understanding the assigned readings in my course textbook much easier to do.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
Regardless of what your research needs are, this books could be called "research for dummies" in its excellent and easy-to-follow explanations. Buy this book, even if your required text is something else - It's filled with examples and can be read like an adventure novel in bed WHILE being truly comprehended! I've taken statistics, research classes, etc. - I wished I had read this book along with my first class! There's nothing dry about this and 1000 words are too few to praise it adequately!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for getting kids to read
I bought this for my nephew for his 10th birthday. When he opened it he said "now I can take my name off the list at the library cause I OWN it" For the rest of the party he regaled us all reading from the book. In the hour he owned the book he learned several new words. What a great way to get kids to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift book forlittle boys!
My nephew LOVED it. I expected more pictures and less text but it didn't bother the 8 year old. He got tons of thrills just from the kid picking his nose on the cover. Perfect gift for a wild little boy along with a container of that oozing slime you get at Walmart. (the fits of giggles from the booger jokes are worth everything)

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Companion to Dragonology
I originally bought this for my nephews, who have a fascination with dragons and such at the moment. It's definitely a result of the Harry Potter phenomenon, but the similarity ends at its "magical" quality. Its intent is the opening of minds to the hidden worlds of the imagination, and a rekindling of young peoples' interests in areas of mythology and classic literature. Supposedly the work of the last dragonmaster, the book aims to dispel the myths on dragons, recalling Hagrid's comments that they are "very misunderstood creatures". While Dragonology has lots of bells and whistles and moving parts, this is, as it says, more a handbook, and not as fun as its predecessor. It is great for stimulating the imagination of children (of all ages, apparently), but it's a slightly more involved text than Dragonology, and therefore likely to appeal to children 10+. It's artwork and some of its content appears based on The Flight of Dragons, by Peter Dickinson, upon which Discovery's Dragon's World DVD was also based. Both of these are great additions to this book, if you can get them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Companion to "Dragonology"
I love this book! I think it might even be more fun than "Dragonology"! The illustrations are still excellent and all the dragon lore is there, but this time, you get to apply your knowledge! The Dragonology Handbook teaches you how to be a Dragonologist through puzzles, dragon riddles, and learning how to write in Dragon runes. The book also has more information on the different dragon species and some other species that weren't described in "Dragonology". It also says where these dragons can be found and what they prey on.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good companion to Dragonology
This book is very clever. It expands on the topics covered in "Dragonology". There are items to pull out and there is another section on dragon writing to translate. ... Read more

This book gives language teachers a great wealth of information regarding dyslexia and reading problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars A parent's point of view
...this is a great book that I'vesearched for.It pulls tons of useful information about dyslexia into one spot.Only one warning I would send out to parents - this is a textbook not a "pop culture" book.I've found the reading slow going as I'm unfamiliar with many of terms and concepts as I'm not a linguist or teacher.Having said that, I belive I now understand how to help my daughter learn easier which will open many previously closed doors to her.The textbook is worth the effort!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
Okay, so most of us girls have seen "Ask Fill-in-the-Blank" and "Advice Column".Andmost of us have heard "Fill-in-Name-of-Celebrity is going to be on Fill-in-Name-of-TV-Show tonight to give friendship advice".But most of it, though not all of it, isn't helpful.I found this book interesting and fun to read, while also very helpful. There were a lot of feelings and troubles that I could relate to, and a lot of good advice and stories that girls, having friendship troubles or not, need to read. The quizzes were fun to take, but I wouldn't take the results TOO, TOO seriously. They are about the most accurate quizzes there are friendship-wise, but if you listen too carefully to the ranking, rating, etc. you come out as, you could end up breaking off a friendship that could've been rescued.Overall, I think this book is both entertaining and useful at the same time.Though I don't agree with some of the things that they say, I think most of the advice was really good.I would recommend this book to all girls. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fun for kids and great for a keepsake!
My husband had this book as a child in the late 70's, and my sister found the same book in the store and bought it for my oldest son about 5 years ago.It has been so fun for my son to fill out the book.We still have Daddy's book to look at from when he was little, so that is fun!I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting their child to have an enjoyable and interactive activity. It also serves as a wonderful keepsake for later on.They have fun things in it, such as "How many steps is it to the mailbox?" and "How many windows are in your house", as well as questions about what you want to do when you grow up and your interests.Love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun packed into a happy yellow book!
I had wonderful memories of this book as a child and wanted to bestow the same on my three year old. We've have great fun counting spoons, talking about our favorite animals, and getting quirky autographs (i.e., a man over 6'3"). A classic. Great family time too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for small children
I wish I had had this book when my son was little. It is a great book for small children to learn from and to tell about themselves at the same time.I plan to use portions of it to base a scrapbook on to give to the small children in my family so they can create their very own memory book about themselves. ...
