5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand
I found this book to be written in a way that is very easy to comprehend, and expresses the ideas clearly. The chapters are short and concise. This book is a great tool to use not only for classes, but to refer to in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong...
I have a son with autism, a wife who is a psychologist and I run a home ABA program as well as helping in my son's pre-school that is instituting an ABA progam. You cannot go wrong with this book. The fact that this book is in it's 8th edition and is used by many college programs speaks to it's strengths.I did read the one dissenting review where it lowered someone's GPA because they did not understand or test well on the material.ABA is deceptive. While it is the just the science of good learning there is a lot of skill and aptitude needed.Being a member of T.O.P.S., Intertel, Mensa, the International High IQ society to name a few I can see that this is not for everyone. Some people are good at being students, some people are good at understanding and implementing good science; with ABA you need to be in the latter group. If you want a good starting/comprehensive book with a lot of meat on the bone this is the one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, but terribly REDUNDANT!
As a psychology student, I encounted this book in a behavioral modification course.I was not overly impressed by it, but it does have it's usefulness.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Read for All High School Teachers
I read this book as a part of a Graduate level course in education I am taking at Rutgers University; the very University its author Michael Smith (who co-wrote with Jeffrey Wilhelm) once taught at. I found this book indispensible in its informative snapshots of high school boys from different backgrounds. It is clear that the language arts do not suffer from irrelevance for boys but perhaps from being taught in such a way that does not connect the texts with the boys' existing literary knowledge. After reading this book, you will learn that there are many ways to engage boys in the teaching of the language arts. I highly recommend this book. It is one of the top five best educational books I have read so far. Exceptional!

5-0 out of 5 stars We'refailing our boys by ignoring their interests
I heard about this book on Amazon, and quickly picked it up. As a teacher of middle school English learners who will soon be transitioning to mainstream classes, I have had many battles with students, especially boys, who hate to read. At the beginning of the year, I have my students complete this statement on a piece of paper: "When I read, I feel....".From the boys, I've gotten such responses as "bored", "tired", "sleepy", and, strangely enough, "hungry".The reality is, our male students are falling through the cracks because they are not engaged with the texts. If students aren't engaged by "Death of a Salesman" or "The Scarlet Letter", then why do we still force them to read these books? One solution to solving the problem of low literacy skills among boys would be to allow more book choices.Literature circles are great, because they give students a choice. If one circle is reading "Lord of the Flies" and doesn't want to read it, then he could get in the group that's reading the book he wants to read."Reading Don't Fix No Chevys" is an insightful, well-researched book that I have been recommending to all my fellow Language Arts and ESL/ELD teachers. Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Inspiring for Any Teacher of Language Arts
This book significantly changed the way I, as a teacher of Language Arts, think about what we do in secondary classrooms every day. Without ever being strident or laying blame, the authors methodically, movingly demonstrate that in so many ways, most middle schools and high schools are still far off the mark in how they teach English. And yet, the answer is right there--all we have to do is listen to the kids.Read more

I purcjased this dictionary for my daughter last year when she was in first grade. It does not have basic words such as "Christmas", "decorate", "build".We are ordering a different children's dictionary tonight, and hope to have better luck! The photos are nice, but there are too few words and watered down definitions...

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Bio. About the Creator of American Sign Language
Born in 1787, young Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was unlike other children his age, for he possessed a condition that made it hard for him to have fun and play with the other kids. His eyes were always watering, and his chest was always aching when he overexerted himself, so he was used to being left behind. However, this, in turn, helped Thomas with his studies, and got him accepted into Yale College at the age of fourteen. Thomas loved learning, and made a pact with himself that he would change the world in some way, he just didn't know how. That is, until he met Alice Cogswell, a deaf girl who couldn't communicate with the other children her age. Thomas soon headed to Europe to learn all about sign language, and brought it back to America, where he developed American Sign Language, and taught many children how to communicate with the outside world, and leave their isolation behind. This is his story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really nice book!
This is a really nice book.Lots of glossy color photos of star designers add to the enjoyment of reading this book. It's great for little or big girls interested in fashion.I especially liked the story of the little girl who made up a new kind of mitten. She's been very successful with her efforts. It shows that not everyone has to go to design school to be a success in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars wish i had this when I was young
Clear, concise explanation of our financial systems. Great tool to introduce kids to having control over their resoures.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is helpful and useful
Let me explain to everyone who says otherwise, the point of this book was NOT to make children think that stock marketing was the only way to get money. No, the book was just trying to teach children about stock marketing so they could understand it and could possibly use it no or when they get older. I think the book had great details and explained the stock market very accurately.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superior and highly recommended introductory guide
Gail Karlitz's Growing Money: A Complete Investing Guide For Kids is an exceptional investing guide in that it is written specifically to teach children (and adults!) how to make their money work for them. Covering savings in a bank, bods, stocks, and how to read the financial pages, Growing Money is a superb guide - and since it's written simply enough for a young person to learn from, it also makes excellent starter reading for adults who have never dabbled in investing before. The prose text is in large type and very straightforward, but does not talk down to the reader. Growing Money is a superior and highly recommended introductory guide, especially for the young people growing up in this brand new era of electronically transmitted investment capital. ... This thesaurus is:5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Teacher Prizes This Book!
_The_Clear_and_Simple_Thesaurus_Dictionary is the most practical thesaurus I have found for use with my fourth- and fifth-grade students. Unlike many thesauruses, it is formatted in a style that students (and adults!) willfind familiar and easy to use. While not as comprehensive in scope as thosedesigned for college use, this thesaurus allows students the satisfactionof finding synonyms or associated words for almost any word they mightneed. I had not found this to be true of other "beginning"thesauruses, which was a frustration to both my students and to me. Thisgem was a major find, and is now in regular use in my classroom. I highlyrecommend it to any teacher of intermediate or junior high age students, aswell as to parents who want a truly helpful resource for their school-agechildren. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is an excellent book for girls who don't have an older sibling that could tell them about their experience through puberty. It is also great for teens entering middle school. During elementary school, there arent many cliques around but in middle school, you'll see cliques EVERYWHERE,and I mean everywhere. this book will teache the child how to deal with the attitudes of the people in the clique, and not to be ashamed of who they are.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute for those under 15
This book is extremely cute-for those under the age of 15. I bought this book when I was 12 and I'm 17 now. Some of the things have stuck with me. Like how to find your power stance and how to plunge a toliet (don't ask). But as I look through it now there's alot of things that seem like they will be good advice but are just obvious. Almost ever section and topic is very blunt and striaght forward. Like the "Be in Charge of Your Financial Life" is quite obvious with the five steps as 1. Earn More 2. Spend Less 3. Save Sufficiently 4. Invest Wisely and 5. Give Generously. And that was as about as indebth as you get. So overall it really didn't grab my attention and bored me.

1-0 out of 5 stars My Mistake
I was hoping, without going to a bookstore and completely looking through it, that this would be a benficial book for my 13 year old.Instead it put her in tears.Instead of accepting themselves as who they are and how they look, they bring kids to the conclusion that they cannot be OK if they break out.My daughter was very upset and all I could do was apologize. If you are looking for a book that wants to compress your daughter into the current fashions and mainstream, maybe this is for you, then again, I strongly believe that my daughter is special and that this has not helped her self-confidence or her understanding of all the changes happening.Personally, I do not want my daughter caught up in all of the latest makeup and dress, I want her to be able to wear what she is comfortable in and feel comfortable in her own skin.Next time I will review any books I get for her much closer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More emphasis need on education, being formal or financial
The author, while he does suggest education is important, does not stress it - he suggests advanced education is important only if you are entering into a professional career.(Read the introduction to see what I mean) - You may want to speak to the your children on that, I felt a bit uncomfortable knowing that's what my chilren would be reading.

Written in a direct, non-condescending style, writer-to-writer, it offers realistic, experienced advice on how to keep notes and use them to create stories and poems. 5-0 out of 5 stars I Teach My Creative Writing Students with this Book
I was introduced to Ralph Fletcher's A Writer's Notebook this during the Coastal Area Writing Project, Coastal Carolina University, Janet Files. This "project" is an intensive, 4 week writing "submersion" for teachers. We learn how to teach our students how to write. Really write. Not how to write an essay for test, but to write descriptively and passionately.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughts and exercises for Writers' Notebooks
This is a small 133 page paperback book that is loaded with ideas for using notebooks to improve your or your student's writing. There are interesting comments from other writers as well as from the author, Ralph Fletcher, noted author of writing books.
5-0 out of 5 stars our "other writing teacher"
I teach second and third grade, and I use this and Ralph Fletcher's other books in this series, regularly in my classroom.I read parts of them out loud to my students, then we discuss how we can use Fletcher's ideas in our own writing. Fletcher writes to his young audience with a great deal of respect. He addresses them as authors in a way that both makes them believe that they really ARE authors, and also gives them the tools to really BE authors.Read more

I bought this one for helping my fiance to learn my language (I live in Santiago, Chile) expecting to get a very good grammar book.I was very dissapointed when I flipped through the pages, although they cover mostly all the notions of spanish grammar I found that the explanations weren't deep enough on some complicated parts of grammar, specially some verbs and usage of personal pronouns like "lo, le, les". I know how to speak my language of course, but if you ask me "why is this like this way and not like this?" I would have some trouble explaining some things and was the reson why I bought this. I guess it's ok for someone just beggining with the study of Spanish but I believe it leaves too many things unclear making necessary to buy a better researched book if you want too deepen your understanding of Spanih grammar.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Spanish resource
This is a really great Spanish book for students of beginning, intermediate, and early advanced Spanish. For advanced students in Spanish 4, AP Spanish, and beyond, this book will serve as a very valuable review book. This book, though, may not be for everyone and is definitely not all-purpose.
2-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you're looking for
To be fair, I was looking for a book to help me with conversational Spanish. This book seems geared more for passing a school course than for learning some quick and useful conversational Spanish.I was looking for a fun way to learn. This is not it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, But Possibly Overwhelming for the Beginner
This set is an excellent place for a child who has already been exposed to the French language to begin. However, if your child has never been exposed to French (and you do not speak it yourself), the pace of instruction might be a bit overwhelming because some pretty difficult vocabulary is introduced very early in the program.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best foreign language program for YOUNG children I've seen.
I teach preschool children French in my home and have not seen an easier method for children who do not yet read.Though designed for beginning readers it is easily adapted to non-readers. Parents who do not speak thelanguage can learn along with their child. The program comes with anactivity book children can draw, color and cut in, along with 3 cassettes. Two cassettes are the lesson plans (1-10), and the third is aninstructional guide for parents.3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing
I was surprised to find out that this book doesn't really come with a cassette for the kids to listen to.I talked with some customer service people and found that there may be quite a few different versions of thisbook, and unfortunatly not all of these versions are currently available. But other than that this book is still a pretty good french instructor foryoung children. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars She needs to practice what she preaches
Spandel has done her homework and has used the trait system extensively in her classroom, which gives her much credibility. However, a well-organized reference book puts all the information about one topic in one place. Unfortunately, information about each of the traits is scattered around the book, making it extremely annoying. I'm sure she could have done better, and we all hope a new edition will prove she can even use the trait of organization herself. Let's practice what we preach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Writing Resource Out There!
While I've been teaching for many years, there is rarely a source I can use without reinventing it almost completely to meet my needs. This is not the case with Teaching Qualities of Writing. It is fantastic!!!I purchased the book and the CD with lessons. It is fantastic! The various writing lessons are taught in a spiral fashion building on the other qualities. They all fit in perfectly with the six trait writing my district is focused on this year. Many of the ideas I have used for years but Portalupi and Fletcher have added a new level, a new resource and books sources for many of my lessons.
