good for english class
this is a pretty good book to study/learn vocabulary at a high schoollevel

Vocabulary for Achievement 4th Course
This Vocab book is usefull and some of its exercises do help the studentto memmorize the information. But, some of the examples and ReadingComprehension articles are out dated, seeing as the book hasn't beenupdated in 13 years. Also, the grouping of asignments to make them betterfit do make it more difficult to take tests as the words highly similar.But overall its not really that bad. I've found myself using and readingalot of the words I've learned from this Vocabulary book.

Not worth the money!!!!!!Won't hold the money!!!!
The size of this quarter album is nice, but it doesn't hold the quarters.I am very disappointed in this purchase and even more so in Scholastic who usually provides quality products.What a waste of money for my money!

Great choice

Great for Brand New English Teachers
I had imagined that there would be more reproducibles in this book. That was my only disappointment. It's more of a how-to guide to the many aspects of teaching English.

Truly Ready-to-Use!

Simply Must Have

extremely useful!
extremely useful for those who have Chinese as their mother language and have instrests in learning English, espcially for those Chinese who just arrive Ameria. you can find almost all the nouns in English you may meet during daily life. this book will expediate your English learning process.

Good but limited
This is an easy to use picture dictionary organized around themes, such as homes, food, feelings, etc. The illustrations are clear and colorful. There are two big drawbacks, however, the first and biggest being that there is no pinyin used, so a Westerner has no idea whatsoever about how to pronounce the Chinese word, although phonetic spellings for the English words are listed in the index. The second is that the "old style" characters are used, not the simplified versions. This book is definitely for Chinese students learning English but of very limited use for English speakers wanting to learn Chinese. As an ESL teacher in China recently, I found I only used this book as a last resort, when explanations of various words proved impossible, and once when I was teaching a lesson on homes. This book is a useful supplement, but I'm going to try to find something with pinyin when I return to China to teach again.

NOT for people trying to learn Chinese
I am trying to learn Chinese, and in seeing my toddler learn English by repeatedly looking at picturebooks, I thought a picture dictionary in Chinese would be a good way to learn every day objects in Chinese.Unfortunately, this book has the English word and the Chinese IN CHINESE CHARACTERS.NO pinyin, no bopomofo pronounciation.For the non-Chinese reader, you'll have to look up every single word.So, though this book may be good for Chinese students learning English, it is of limited usefulness to students learning Chinese.Frankly, I think this is an extremely stupid mistake by the publishers of this book.The editors should be flogged! ... I bought this for my 6 year old.She loves to read and really loves to write stories.She can use this book, but it will also grow with her.She should benefit from this one for several years.In the meantime, we have a lot of fun as she's learning "what another word for___?"

How to Speak Politely and Why
An important book for kids as they are learning language.I got it for my four year old niece and she now makes it a habit of saying "yes" instead of "yeah."It seems insignificant, but is really charming and nice to hear.

Every girl should have this book!

The Best Way to Enjoy Finance & Economics
This books gives the true value of savings: a life worth dreamings about and investments we make for it to see it happen. This is a sweet and funny little book that makes money look exciting as a tool and token. I see this book as the clues to playing a cool video game. (More, like the hint book.) It's so casual that you think your reading Reader's Digest. You never feel confused! Math teacher's, parents, middle schoolers, high school students, college students, retirees: you'll love this book.

Yes, a good money book for teens, but the voice is annoying.
This book will basically focus on the way the stock market works and how to invest in it. It also tells you how much you can save in the future. It is the meat of the book when it comes to the stock market, but the book will also teach you the cost of bad habits such as smoking and the upsides of credit cards if used right. The book teaches you how to get your money's worth in the bank, teaching you everything from how they make money to what a cd is. The worst thing about this book that annoyed me so much, I took off a point, was that they try to write the book in a type of slang format. Going from saying the word dawg and writing rock lyrics about the book. This is very annoying, but the tips this book gives are just too valuble to detour you alway.
Great intro financial / investing book for **everyone**
I only skimmed this book (after all, I own almost all the other TMF books!), but I think this book is by far one of the best financial books for **any** new investor, regardless of age. While other books may have more content, this is one of the most approachable financial and investing books I've read. (Plus, its worksheets **force** you practice what you read!) Crazy and Wild
This book's not your average Joe. It contains so many idioms it will make your head spin. That's a plus and a minus. It doesn't go into a ton of detail. But it fills the bill if you are teaching a class with it.

Great for teaching idioms!
Not only does this book give a definition of the idiom, it tells of the origin!With that information you can answer all the why questions you get from students.This will be a valuable resource in any intermediate classroom.

Great for English Language Learners
I've used Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms for two years. I introduce it as part of bell work activity. It's a time saver so I can occupy learners while I check admit slips and complete attendance. Students copy the sample sentence. If the sentence doesn't give a clear meaning-usage, I modify it, but the text still remains enormously useful because I give the students the meaning(s)and origin(s) Terban's research provides. I work with English Language Learners. Ironically students sometimes remember the meaning(s) and origins better than the content of the rest of the period when I quiz them. At least that's what my research reveals. I highly recommend this text for any teachers who work with elementary, middle school, and high school. Hooked on Phonics works for our son!!!
I've been looking for reading activities to do with my son, Drake, so his reading skills won't get "rusty" over the summer. I recently purchased the Hooked on Phonics kit for second graders and Drake loves it! He actually asks me to get it out and do the activities with him. I think the little successes he experiences every night make him want to continue with the program. Hooked on Phonics makes it so easy for the child to gain mastery of various concepts because the lessons are short and sweet and only focus on one skill at a time. Drawing helps writing practice more fun
These books are great.They have many thematic ties to our curriculum.I made them into centers by copying the book and gluing them to a colorful folder and laminating it.I put those in the writing center whenever we were focusing on a certain theme.A great resource for 1-3.

Improves handwriting and basic drawing skills!A++++
This is a wonderful set of books.We are using it as a handwriting practice program (for 1st & 2nd grade) rather than a drawing program, but I'm sure it has applications both ways.
Can't Keep Them On the Shelves!
I am a teacher-librarian and I can't keep these drawing books on the shelves! I am always looking for drawing books and these are perfect for the primary and early elementary age group. The simple instructions and diagrams help the children to produce realistic drawings which are the starting point for a host of creative projects! Life-Changing Youth Parable
I read this in high-school English, and it will forever change the way you understand the progression of life.This short, simple book is basically a clone of the best-selling adult counterpart, except the prologue and epilogue have been put into a high school context rather than the adult work world.The core message of the book is that life doesn't always work the way you plan it, and you should just move on to a new idea, plan, etc.This is not to say the book rejects perseverence; it utterly supports it, since trying a new method, in a way, can be just as much "moving on" as giving up and starting a whole new objective is.This has turned me from a occasional worrywart to a person who can cope with life as it comes.The ideal time to read this is January, when people make New Year's Resolutions.This, moreover, is another form of progression, as you move on to better plans for this year and not worry so much about the one that has just ended, because, of course, it's in the past.They say it's high-school level, but it seemed quite easy.Don't ever think that it's childish though, because although it has a mice/"littleperson" style, it can be viewed as a "mature Aesop's fable," because, again, it is the same in the adult edition.Go get it.You'll think twice about "going with the flow."

Great book, understandable and applicable
As an English teacher, I was looking for a good nonfiction book to assign to my 10th grade students.I'm very happy I found this book!The allegory used and the lessons taught are fantastic for high school students.I would recommend this for students of all backgrounds in all situations.There is always something to be learned.

A good, pratical book for teens.
This was a good, pratical book for teens. It deals with the subject of change and how to adapt to it. This book has helped both adults with marrige problems and teenagers with breakups. It has been called "simple" or "pointless" when really it is not. Just because the advice is not spelled-out does not make it useless. In fact, thats what makes it so great-anyone can apply the exelent advice to their current problem or situation. No teen wants to sit down with a heavy book aboout "goal-banks" "paradigms" such as THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS. Having been forced to read the thing myself when I was a teen, I must say I found the whole thing rather unenjoyable and tedious.
