4-0 out of 5 stars INCANTATION
The burning of Jewish books in the town square is the first portent that life for sixteen-year-old Estrella is going to change.Set in Spain during the Middle Ages, the story is about secrets and self-knowledge.Estrella's family are Conversos, who practice Judaism in secret at home and in a church where all of the congregation plus the priest are like themselves. As the persecution of Jews draws ever closer to Estrella's own family, she is told about their secret, given a ring to buy herself safe passage to Amsterdam if need be, and taught the rudiments of kabbalah by her learned grandfather. This unlikely act is undoubtedly a gesture toward the current popularity of kabbalah and it does little to mar the credibility of the plot, consisting only of a few "kabbalistic" customs like wearing a red thread and learning the names of the ten gates of Paradise.More central to the story is Estrella/Esther's development from a carefree girl to a young woman fated to pass on her family's heritage virtually alone. As in other of Hoffman's books, nature and magic are intertwined.Estrella's mother is a dyer and a healer; her grandfather is a surgeon and a scholar. The witchcraft of which they are accused is practical magic, the kind that works not through the supernatural but through knowledge heightened by insight.Throughout the book, Estrella's mother teaches her about the natural world and how humans use it for good or evil. At the conclusion, after some horrific scenes of torture and burnings, she flees, having learned that "a Jew can never be attached to a place...We cannot have roots in the earth of any country, only in the garden that we carry inside us."This is a somber message for the teens of today and it is offset by other conflicts that they may find more appealing: the true nature of a false friend, and rivalry over a boy friend.Admirers of Alice Hoffman will enjoy her evocative writing style but Incantation is one of her lesser works. For teens and adults.Reviewed by Linda R. 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Entertaining and a great value
I love this set.The performers are superb, and are clearly having fun with the reading, the text is unabridged, and there is a complete lack of chessy effects or background sound track, with the exception of segway music at the beginning and end of each CD, which I personally find very a very nice prompt to switch CDs. Even the questionable nod to femminism by including Lynn Redgrave as a reader for "Prince Caspian" does not diminish the production or entertainment value one iota. They presented in a different order from the original book series publication, but that was no matter to me: I simply listen to them in the coreect sequence.I am perfectly content to hear how it all began later rather than sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars What A Wonderful World It Is
The Chronicles of Narnia - the audios were really quite good. They are each done by different actors.Kenneth Branagh, who I know from Harry Potter's Chamber of Secrets, did well with the story telling of the first book "The Magician's Nephew".All the other actors were wonderful as well. But the best, to me, was Patrick Stewart, in "The Last Battle". What a performance. He caught my attention. So very dramatic, very passionate and funny!Overall, I enjoyed it.And to me, it's almost up there with Harry Potter's audio, and Lord of the Rings audio with Ian Holmes, playing the role of Frodo. If you want to buy it go for it!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Expeditious and Clear Case made for Christ!
Lee Strobel, an award-winning journalist for the "Chicago Tribune," was plugging away and climbing higher up the ladder of journalism when he became confronted with his spiritual beliefs, or lack of, as Strobel was an atheist and his wife converted to Christianity. Strobel was forced to answer the question, "Who was Jesus?" Strobel's journey of skepticism to faith is as old as Christianity. One of the most famous journeys recorded is also a part of early Christian history. Saul, once a persecutor of Christians, becomes Paul and its most ardent purveyor of Christianity after being confronted by God on the road to Damascus. Strobel, in order to reclaim his wife, decides to use his Yale Law School education and years of refined reporting skills to discredit the Christian religion. But on the contrary, Strobel's plan backfires, and like the doubting apostle Thomas, he becomes a believer in Jesus due to the overwhelming amount of evidence.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Gives Christians more back-up(if needed) and Unbelievers the Truth about Christ!
This book was absolutely amazing. This book is not only for Unbelievers(especially), but Christians as well. This book breaks down the hard questions and facts concerning Jesus Christ. It's kind of like trial, where evidence is brought forth in the defense of Jesus, hence the name, "The 'Case' for Christ".
5-0 out of 5 stars The Case For Christ is Enlightening for Christians and Skeptics
Like many American Christians, I was brought to church most Sundays and endured countless sermons and lessons. Despite this seemingly rich education on Christian principles, I never was exposed to a lesson or class on the existence of God; God's existence was assumed as fact. As I matured into my twenties and went to college, the existance of God was no longer taken for granted. I encountered many agnostics and atheists among my many college professors. The net result of their influence was to question my faith in the existance of God. I never lost my faith, but I found it was a faith that could not withstand scrutiny.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Cool Mom's" review
I am reading through Woman After God's Own Heart, which I so wanted to share with my son's girlfriend, very new and unsure of her faith, with absolutely no spiritual support from her parents. But "Woman" is very mature and deals with women more my age. I saw "Young Woman" here when I ordered another copy of "Woman" for a close friend. I'm excited about the book... I know some of these teens reviews are mixed, and one actually very harsh. I will say this to the young ladies out there... it IS possible to live purely and holy before God as a teen. I did it with peer pressure and all... I saved myself for marriage and have had a wonderful life. It was not and still is not always easy - even adults have peer pressure. My husband and I talk to our kids about EVERYTHING and don't "flowerize" anything. It is hard out there - but God requires integrity from us. Remember, Elizabeth George was a teen at one time and she raised teen daughters... the way she speaks is out of a heart of love for you and for the Kingdom of God. Philippians 4:8 says Whatever things are pure, true, just, lovely and of good report with VIRTUE and PRAISE - think on THOSE things. When I read the book with my daughter I'll come back to give my final opinion. Blessings! ... Read more

Great Book! Really summarizes the lessons of Conversations with God. I'm a little embarrassed to say that it was so simple and profound that I actually found it more powerful and "teaching" than the actual CWG. Hey, if you can't explain it to a five year old child, something's probably not quite right!!

I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

Ruby Lee is a precious story that includes enchanting illustrations. A simple and powerful story, Ruby Lee will fill the fertile mind of any little girl with hope, confidence and faith. As a family counselor I know how essential it is to give our children a steady diet of encouragement--this book provides a healthy dose of encouragement and more!
5-0 out of 5 stars RUBY LEE THE BUMBLEBEE
is a book of discovery. For a child, it holds the delights of an afternoon in Mrs. Wagner's garden of flowers and the small creatures that dwell in a place of nature. A young girl Ashley shares her pleasure with her friend and a wise bumblebee named Ruby Lee who, much to Ashley's surprise, talks to her. Mrs. Wagner asks Ashley to help her by potting some flowers for her patio, but Ashley is afraid she will do it wrong. Left with her uncertainties, Ruby Lee enters her world and convinces her "Ofcourse you can pot those flowers for Mrs. Wagner. You are a talented and bright young lady." Taking Ruby Lee's advice, Ashley finishes the job and realizes how good it feels to know "She had done it!". When Mrs. Wagner returns to the patio, she is very pleased with Ashley's efforts and tells her that by believing in herself, she can do anything

I thought this book was great - it had adventure. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Story of Samson". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Holy Land Adventure
This is a wonderful portrayal of the Holy Land at the time of Jesus's ministrations. Ms. Speare is a master at plot and characterization. The Bronze Bow is both exciting and inspirational. It stands on a par with The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I will continue to read this story from time to time for the rest of my life and will pass it on to my grandchildren

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most excellent books I have ever read!
This book is great. My class read it this year as one of our sixth grade novels. The Bronze Bow is about a boy named Dainel. Dainel's parents died when he was very young. His father was crucified, and his mother, who sat weeping at his father's crucifixtion, died a few weeks later. Daniel then had to live with his grandmother and his younger sister, Leah. Daniel leaves his home when he is thirteen years old. One day, five years later, Daniel saw two kids about his age. One of which he recognized. For moment, he was bewildered with who the boy really was until he remembered-he had gone to school with him. When Daniel goes up to Joel, he finds out the other person was his twin sister, Malthace. He asked how his grandmother and sister were doing. Joel and Malthace informed him that his grandmother and Leah were fine, and that his grandmother was sometimes seen out of the house. But Leah never came out. When Daniel goes back to the village, he remembers that Leah had been possessed by demons. They had a large variety of doctors see her, but no one could cure it. Daniel goes back to the village, and shortly after he recieved a message saying that his grandmother was dying. He went home to find his grandmother on her bed. Leah had nailed all of the doors shut and had never been out for about a week. Daniel visited his grandmother, when her last words spoken to him were, "Dainel, you came." Leah would rarely come out of her corner where she was balled up to see anything. Once Daniel and Leah's grandmother died, they moved into one of Daniels' friends houses where Daniel worked. Leah got to meet Malthace and became good friends with her. Daniel realized that whenever Leah would see Malthace, her attitude and personality would change-to be more like hers. That lasted until one very day. Daniel had gotten mad at her for being friends with a Roman, Marcus, and she became angry. Leah became very sick and close to dying.Daniel didn't know who could help her until he thought of one person-Jesus, who cured the demons from her forever. This book is extraordinary. I could read it again and again. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book About Christmas
This is a beautiful, while entertaining, story about a family of six unruly children, who are all starring in the church Christmas Pageant.
5-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have to Be a Child to Love It
"The Herdmans were absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world..." So begins one of the funniest...and ultimately the most touching...books ever written about the Christmas season. The story about the five scruffy children from the "wrong side of the tracks" is narrated with humor and finally dawning perception about the true meaning of the Christmas story. Buy yourself a copy and settle down with some cookies and cocoa and prepare to be entertained, whatever your age.

5-0 out of 5 stars my comments
I enjoyed the books very much. They are a little different form my usual reading, R.A.Salvadore and Micheal Jordan. The books gave me a needed break. When I finished them I was happy to turn them over to my granddaughtter.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great series of books!!!!!! I love the story!!!!!
It certainly has become one of my favorites series of books, if notthe most. It really kept me entertained. I spent most of my work hours reading the books, and sometimes I hated been working because of the interrumptions. I read almost 10 chapters while working and kept me focused imagining everything that C.S. Lewis described as if I were watching a movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars good read
only disappointed with the books being numbered chronologically instead of by publish date.they are great books for adults and children the like.easy to read and follow - creative, imaginative and humorous.maybe too short a novel and too simple for adults but who isn't a child at heart?the rough pictures in the books are very descriptive and makes the books more interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paper qualtiy poor
The box set is great reading...but for the price...especially the list price of $70.00, I would have expected higher quality paper. The set is printed on pulp paper and will not last worth beans and the covers are thin and not robust. You may as well buy the cheapest set you can find, because the quality of the cheaper books is not any lower, the books are just a little smaller and the "bonus content is just the first chapter of the next book and some other tidbits of marginal interest

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Excellent! Superb! (if you like fairy-tales then you may read this review, if not, don't go any further)
The Chronicles of Narnia are beautifully written books. They are some of my favorite books I've ever read. I would strongly reccomend them to everyone. I have read them all seven times, and I still can't decide which is my favorite! People who don't like them surprise me. Not only are they wonderful fairy-tales, they also have a lot of underlying Christian themes.

Editorial Review

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book...and I think you will too!
This book is about a little boy who finds a train in front of his house. He has a chance to go on a great journey...does he get on the train? I think you will like this book. This book makes me feel happy. Your kids might like it too!

4-0 out of 5 stars S, Bartkus Review
This beautifully written 1986 Caldecott Award winning book captivates readers young and old to love this Christmas classic. The story is told from a young boy's point of view of waiting for Santa to arrive on Christmas Eve, only to find a train waiting outside his bedroom window ready to go to the North Pole.Van Allsburg immediately draws the reader into the story by capturing the young boy leaning outside his window leading the reader to turn the page and see what the boy sees. The storyline follows the journey of a boy on the Polar Express train to see Santa in the North Pole and receive the first gift of Christmas. It teaches a strong lesson for those who believe and is appropriate for children while bringing back the warm eager memories of waiting for Santa.Van Allsburg's award winning illustrations are so realistic and fill the pages to capture the emotions and spirit of the children. His use of shading to create shadows on each page capture the essence of the Christmas Eve night. The lights in the background seem to pop out in the background as if one turned on a light switch. The detailed realistic drawings capture the emotion of the young boy especially when he lost the bell that Santa had given him.We see him on the train and empathize with him along with the other children as if we were riding right there in the train with him.Although the illustrations gained the main recognition of the story, his use of rich descriptive language also strengthen the story.Van Allsburg's use of similes to compare, give vivid details and appeal to the senses of the reader. For example, one line describes the chocolate cocoa as " melted chocolate bars."The popularity of this book was made into a blockbuster movie and Van Allsburg's talent of lasting artisitic impression and rich language was not lost. This book will continue to touch readers of all ages and capture the warm spirit of Christmas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Mother from Sun Prairie
Brilliant! The little princess who did not want to clean her room ran off to join the rumpled street kids. Her experience which at first was liberating and fun became ugly and shameful to her.Her father the king quietly witnessed her disobedience and patiently waited for her to return home on her own.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped my daughter's class
This past week my daughter's 3rd grade classroom lost a classmate to a tragic accident that happened in their cafeteria at lunchtime.Their teacher read them this book as a part of helping them grieve the loss of their friend. With the restrictions that goverment has placed upon our schools related to what you can talk about regarding beliefs and religion, I was grateful for this book's approach. It allowed them to hear about the "next place" without offending any of the different beliefs and crossing that line. There have been millions of tears shed this week and there will be millions more before the grieving process is over. This book helped their class in a way that the teacher probably could not have done by herself. And since some of the kids talked one on one to the counselors that have been available, but not all of them have, it was comforting from my viewpoint to hear that the class as a whole could hear this story and continue to work through it together. It made enough of an impression on my 8 YO that she shared the experience with me and I then looked up the book myself. It reached so many kids on so many different levels that I would recommend every school to have it in their library "just in case" it would ever be needed (and hopefully it won't).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Place
This is the MOST inspirational and comforting message both in words and pictures I have seen regarding the hereafter. I have given copies to friends and relatives of those who have recently passed on. A friend of mine who is a hospice volunteer has also given this book as a gift. I will definitely be ordering more copies in the future and want to thank the author and illustrator for a job more than well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for terminally ill
I read this book with interest.I liked it but a well person would realize that NOBODY knows what the hereafter is.However, for someone looking at death in the face, it might be of some comfort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting Story of Diversity
This is a companion book to the documentary about the Paper Clip project started at Whitwell Middle School outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the late 1990s.What began as a class to teach diversity to a mostly white southern group of schoolchildren evolved into a project of collecting 6 million paper clips (the clips are historically tied to the Holocaust) to represent the Jews who perished during that dark period. This book is a wonderful story that shows what can be accomplished when children are determined and how a relatively small idea can grow into something significant that can affect millions of people. This one is highly recommended for children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves 10 stars
I happened upon a review and ordered the book. When it arrived, I read it with a lump in my throat and my eyes tearing up.My 72 year old mother and I were driving to another town when I started telling her about it.I couldn't get that damn lump out of my throat and pretty soon my voice started quivering and I started crying. She just reached over and held my hand as I got my composure back.I was done, though, I told her she had to read it.She did. Afterward, she took it to one of her clubs and shared it.It's just a 10 minute read, but it sure provides plenty of emotion. I am so glad I happened upon it. A glorious story. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars The power of a symbol.
Those of us who are horrified by the murderous actions of the Nazis during the Holocaust pray that such a terrible event will never happen again. It is heartening to know that there are a number of middle school children in Whitwell, Tennessee who did their share to raise the consciousness of people from all over the world.Whitwell, a small town of white Anglo-Saxon Protestants with a population of only 1,600, is now internationally famous for its "Paper Clip Project."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great First Communion present
We have given this as a First Communion gift for two of our children now and both have enjoyed it enough to want to read it.There are interesting call-out sections that especially appeal to kids. We've looked for youth Bibles for some time and haven't found anything as nice as this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Bible for Episcopalians/Anglicans, too.
My confirmation class which includes youth and adults went wild over this Bible - lots of good questions and reflections in an engaging format... suggestions on how to "pray it" and "live it."When it comes to the "Catholic Connections", our class talks about ways in which our denomination views things similarly or differently - all leading to good discussion.
