Editorial Review

Benny adores helping out his Grandpa at the bagel bakery, the best in town. The young Jewish boy loves his grandfather's bagels so much, he wants to thank God for them. But how? One morning, he asks his Grandpa if he could pay him for his work with a big bag of bagels. So equipped, he heads for the synagogue, takes a deep breath, opens the big wooden cupboard that is the Holy Ark, and places the steaming bag inside: "King of the Universe," he whispered. "I brought You some bagels. I know You make them. But You never taste them, because Grandpa sells every last one." Benny keeps this up week after week until he discovers, to his dismay, that a poor man in a tattered coat has been eating his bagels, and not God. How will God know he is thanking Him if someone else is eating the bagels? Grandpa reassures him that by making the world better, he is indeed thanking God. Dusan Petricic's expressive, cross-hatched illustrations, each one as round and warm and brown as a freshly baked bagel, illuminate all of the story's best moments with humor and emotion. This simple, touching Jewish folktale from Spaintranscends Judaism as a story of human kindness and generosity of spirit that will resonate with all children. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Christians as well
I am not Jewish but feel this book is wonderful for all children who are trying to grasp the concept of God and for parents who want to impart this important lesson - God wants us to help others. My 7 year old checked this book out from the public library and had me read it to him over and over again. He related to Benny and especially loves the part when the Grandfather is initially horrified with what Benny is doing with the Bagels. This book is a true classic and I am disappointed that I don't find it available in my local bookstores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful New Twist on an Old Story
_Bagels from Benny_ is a retelling of an old Hasidic Jewish tale (Hasidism is the mystical branch of Judaism). The tale is retold through the eyes of a young child, Benny.Benny helps his Grandfather in his bakery everyday. One day a customer thanks the Grandfather for putting such "love" in his bagels.Benny's Grandfather brushes off the thanks and says that the thanks really belong to God.Benny like most children is earnest in his desire to get the his thanks to God.Benny's dilemma is how to be sure that God "received" the thanks.Benny decides to share some of the bagels with God and places a bag full of bagels in the Holy Ark (a closet in the synagogue that holds the Torahs [5 Books of Moses]).When Benny next goes to synagogue with his family on Saturday (the Jewish Sabbath),Benny is delighted to see that the bagels are gone. He, of course, decides that God ate the bagels and decides to bring some every week for God.After a few weeks Grandpa gets suspicious, what is a little boy doing with all of those bagels?Grandpa follows Benny and like most adults is appalled to find out what Benny is doing and why.But what is happening to the bagels?Where are they going? That is the delightful end to the story and it shows how Benny is thanking God by making the world a better place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful tool for youth workers
In his book, Wired: For a Life of Worship, dynamic author and speaker Louie Giglio offers teens a fresh look at a lifestyle of worship. Today's youth are searching for meaning, and they want to grow spiritually beyond the packaged church experience. Giglio believes God wants us to know Him intimately and to "live a life that's fully active, awakened to His great love."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Daughter loves it
My daughter loves this book and wants us to read it to her all the time before bed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to read the ending....
My 4-year-old daughter received this book - it was her gift she opened on Christmas eve. We sat by the lighted Christmas tree and fire and she settled into my lap for a goodread. The illustrations ARE precious, as other reviewers have said. The story started off beautifully - very believable for a little girl. We got to the part about "the King" and I got intrigued as to how the writer would explain this - then the book ended. It just ENDED. No further explanation, no further story. Just a few more pages would have turned this almost good book into possibly a great book. I am sad that it didn't make it - I had high hopes. Perhaps you might want to check it out from the library first to see what I mean. :((I did give it 2 stars because of the sweet illustration and the beginnings of a good book.) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids... and their parents!
My son enjoys us reading this version of the Bible to him and also him reading it to us. He really wants to read it so thats a huge plus and its easy to understand but will be appropriate for him for a long time, I think.

3-0 out of 5 stars Full-Color Illustrations?Where?
One of the main reasons we bought this Bible for our son, besides the fact that he needed a version he could read on his own, was because the jacket advertized "full-color illustrations".But this is not true. The illustrations are two-color ink, and the text is typed in a mint green---not easy on the eyes!We ended up returning this Bible to the store for a more kid-friendly Bible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed with the Adventure Bible for Young Readers. I purchased them for use in Sunday school, and I had to return them. Although the translation is acceptable, the "helps," "blurbs," and editorial comments were filled with misinformation and theological interpretations inconsistent with our church's theology. This Bible could probably be used in a church that is extremely conservative, but in my opinion mainstream churches will not find it palatable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids and Adults too!
I purchased 2 copies of the KJV Kids' Study Bible. One for my daughter on her 8th birthday, and one for my son who was 10 at the time. Now, 4 years later, I am so pleased with the study design that I am purchasing a leather-bound copy for myself! (Mind you, I have other Bibles: purse size, chronological, red-letter, you name it.)But at this time in my life, I find the Kids' Study Bible to be the ideal companion in my morning exercise/devotion schedule.Thank you for designing such a wonderful Bible product.

4-0 out of 5 stars king james kid study bible
Very nice Bible for any Child or "NEW" Christian learning the word of God. My only complaint is the words of Christ are not in RED or highlighted.

5-0 out of 5 stars The KJV Kids' Study Bible by Lawrence O. Richards
I work with Kids ages 6 - 11 on Sunday Mornings (called Jr. Church) while the main Service is going on.I've been Looking for a Bible that is written in the King James Version, which is the same version that is used by the whole church, but able to teach the Kids on their level. This Bible does both. The Bible has introductions to each book, a summary of what the book is about and thought questions to have the Child look into God's word with and understanding at their Level. If you work with Kids, use King James, and want to make the transition to the Adult church easy, the, in my opinion, this is the Bible.Read more

Editorial Review

With its remarkable illustrations and its affectionate portrait of a migrant family, Eve Bunting's latest book is a jewel. Carlos, his parents, and his sisters visit the family village in Mexico. Mama and Papa are very excited, but the kids don't know what all the fuss is about. If they really love Mexico, what could be the point of leaving for America just for "opportunities"? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eve Bunting and David Diaz do it again!
Eve Bunting takes her readers on journey with a Mexican family going home for Christmas. The text she uses is elegantly written.Through the feelings expressed by Carlos and his family you get a real sense of the Mexican culture and the importance of family.David Diaz's illustrations lead you into the journey with Carlos and his family. With the use of collaged background and inset illustrations the pages come alive. The text of Bunting and the illustrations of Diaz give you the sense of being there. This is a book that a child of any age would enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is very touching...it sensitively portrays the sacrafices Mexican immigrants have to make to move to America for their children to have a better life. Very well done themes of parental love, long car trips, the sadness of leaving one's home country, sibling realtionships, husbandand wife being romantic (tasteful and age-appropriate), and a child'sgrowing understanding of the complexities of life. Buy and read it to everychild (and adult) you know.

I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
I got this for my very curious 6.5yo and I agree it is very well done and very tasteful. I do think you will have to be dealing with a mature child if they are 5 & 6 and reading this book. I agree with the others, that this is geared more towards 7 and up. No matter the age, I think it is best that my children learn about sex early and what is about from me. She has already asked a ton of questions and I am glad she trusts me enough to ask.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book, in the "God's Design for Sex" series is a good book to read with your child. The only complaint I have with the series is that I think the information given is too explicit for the ages recommended.I would wait until my child is at least 8 to read this book with him.The same with the others in the series, I will be waiting until the last age recommended (or beyond). The series did do a good job showing Sex and our bodies as God designed them to be - important to teach, especially if they will be having "sex/puberty education" from the public school system. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book of Comfort & Hope
This is a wonderful book that reminds us all that Heaven is an amazing place filled with love, laughter, and dancing. This book was given to me after my daughter, Madeline Renae, was born still at 37 weeks on May 31, 2006.The illustrations are so beautiful and it brings comfort and joy to my heart when I read the book and think of my daughter in Heaven dancing, playing, sitting in Jesus' lap, and reminding me how wonderful it is there.I recommend this book to anyone who knows someone who has lost a child as a way to reach out.I am purchasing additional copies to give away to others who have experienced loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars comforting and reassuring for the Christian believer
This is a wonderful, comforting book for Christian believers. My husband and I read with tears but were reassured at the same time. The illustrations are beautiful and there is room at the end for your written thoughts and memories.I have made the book a journal and special memory in honor of the daughter I lost. It does have some Christian and biblical references throughout that some may not be comfortable with if of other religions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too overtly Christian for our school, and most schools
I ordered this book for our school community, when one of our members lost her baby at 2 weeks, due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.I probably should have re-read all of the reviews, and should have noticed that the author is a minister's wife. When the book came, while I found the illustrations sweet, and some of the content soothing, the tone was too overtly Christian to suit our school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for teenage girls
Point of Grace is a popular Christian singing group with a particular attraction to teenage girls. As part of their ministry they regularly have conferences for teenage girls called Girls of Grace. This book is basically a devotional and Bible study workbook for teenage girls. In it the members of Point of Grace discuss many of the most common problems of teenage girls. These include gossip, being true to yourself, dealing with the games they play, and self-esteem issues.Make It Real delivers Christian based answers and guidance for those dealing with these most common of teenage issues. Each section ends with discussion topic questions that make the book a good guide to get young girls thinking about how to apply the information in their everyday life. Make It Real is a highly recommended book both for any teenage girl and for parents seeking to understand, or remember, the problems of being a teenager and how that has changed today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for teenage girls
I got this book in order to mentor one of the students at my church. The book was so good that I am now doing a group study with 12 girls in our youth group. The book meets teenage girls where they are, and helps them to develop a Godly character in themselves. It teaches them about things that they deal with on a daily basis, like gossip, relationships and who they are in Christ.Point of Grace did a terrific job at writing this book and I recommend it to anyone with teenage girls.I also recommend it to parents to help them understand what their teenager is or will be dealing with at school and in their social circle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars heartwarming traditional Christian
I stumbled on this book @ the bookstore fall 2005, & came home & ordered several copies for us & as gifts for others. The illustrations are precious & very colorful. The angle of the story being told, & some illustrations being from the point of view of a mouse is clever & engaging. For Christians, it is especially poignant when the mouse discovers that the figures he has been hauling out of what looked to him like a great new house (nativity stable), actually represent those present @ the birth of Jesus Christ, Savior of the world. It is an excellent short & appealing story for children, w/ a focus on the real reason for Christmas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Godparents, take note
This is a great book for Godparents to give Godchildren. It is always a challenge to find something meaningful to remind the Godchild of the special event in which they participated. I'm giving this book to my Godchild years later to reinforce her connection with God.

4-0 out of 5 stars Water Come Down
As a Sunday School director, I ordered this book as a suppliment to our curriculum. It is a book that is simple and elegant at the same time. The illustrations are beautiful. It is a lovely book.

What fabulous book. This is the best and one of the only books I have seen on infant baptism! The illustrations are lovely and colorful and is a wonderful book to start reading to your child at any age.It is easily adaptable to an infant/toddler and as your child gets older, they will have fun reading it and remembering the book when they see other children beingbaptized.Wonderful book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Biblical theology for KIDS
I've used a number of children's Bibles over the years, some better than others. Many of them tell the familiar Bible stories well, but without necessarily connecting them, or pointing to their ultimate fulfillment in Christ. This Story Bible, however, is a welcome exception to that rule. It truly is a Biblical Theology Primer, and an enjoyable one at that!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gospel for Children (a.k.a Biblical Theology light)
How does one start a review of a book like the Bible? How does one review a book written by one's pastor and friend?Well, I can tell you that I am unashamedly proud of this book and wholeheartedly recommend it to ALL.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY MOVING CHRISTMAS STORY
The women at work called this book to my attention: a tale of a poor woman who suffers injustice, rights wrongs, and is rewarded in an extraordinary way.My co-workers had all gotten copies, loved the story which moved them to tears, and planned giving them as holiday gifts to the people they knew.I confess tearing up a bit myself. As Christmas approaches my thoughts turn back to this story which I would like to recommend to you all.It is the first book I've seen consisting of pictures without words. And that opens up the delightful possibility of sitting with your child and telling the story in your own words, or even better letting the child tell you the story.Children seem to be more observant of the details in the pictures than adults. The book is obviously useful for all sighted people regardless of their language or literacy level.A great "read" and a great gift to give at the holidays.

I am delighted to see that this book is back in print. When I first discovered it, I wanted to buy a copy for everyone I knew. Unfortunately for me at that time, it was no longer available!

2-0 out of 5 stars Original format, but hellfire tone in the add-ons
As intriguing and as eye-candy fetching as the format is, I can't recommend this edition of the New Testament, nor could I drive myself to buy it for my kid.The tone of the commentary and side-bars is so blatantly evangelical that a child is likely to think that most of his classmates (kids aged 7-11!) are on the path to hell, plus we all need to get out there and convert the whole wide world, without any respect whatsoever for the complex cultures and belief systems found on this wonderful planet. My kid MIGHT be inclined to tune into this edition, once he gets old enough --but I'm not ready to abandon him to Pat Robertson's interpretation of Christianity quite yet.(No, as far as I know, Robertson is not involved with this publication. But you get the idea.)

5-0 out of 5 stars For the kid who doesn't like books without pictures!
I got this bible for my 8 year old son.He is not much of a reader, but was truly wanting to get into God's word. What happened was that he began losing interest because it became somewhat boring for him. This bible has helped to spark the desire for His word and also gives interesting facts and tid-bits that cater to his curious, but not always attentive, mind.Highly recommended for the younger child that doesn't have the natural desire for reading much of anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnify - the new testament biblezine
As a children's pastor, I highly recommend the Magnify - New Testament. It's interactive layout is perfect for this next generation. Before we can expect a child to hold the truths found in the scriptures, they first must understand and interact with the scriptures in a way that creates ownership.Magnify is a great tool to accomplish this. ...
